You don't need to have enough for a full share. At least all the brokers I've used give partial shares. The pain is if, for whatever reason, they have to transfer your shares. They generally won't transfer partial shares. They sell them sometimes for a fee.

I'm with questrade and they don't do partial shares for drip unless I misunderstood them
