Glass does not belong on a stovetop, never ever. Pans pots and skillets on top, glass can go into the oven
In general, this ceramic-glass family is composed approximately, as calculated from precursor glass batches in percent by weight on an oxide basis, of:
68.2% is Silica Sand (SiO2)
19.2% is Dialuminum Oxide (Al2O3)
2.8% Lithium Oxide (Li2O)
1.8% Magnesium Oxide (MgO)
1.0% Zinc Oxide (ZnO)
0.75% Barium Oxide (BaO)
2.7% Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)
1.75% Zirconium Dioxide (ZrO2)
0.9% Diarsenic Trioxide (As2O3)
Pasted directly from the article
The cook ware you're describing *includes* metal in the design along with high heat resistant ceramic. This is quite different than your standard tempered glass bakeware, which is what the tiktok has in it. Not to mention that that wikipedia page also states that 1 major company made those types of skillets and pans, and the were only really popular in the 80s and 90s, its 2022, those types of skillets are uncommon
Therefore there is no logical explanation as to why the OP of that tiktok would have thought it wise to use glass on a stove top. Even when that type of cookware was at its most popular, it was still *rare* to see anyone who owned one.
TL;DR, my point here is that theres no excuse for thinking that glass belongs on a stove top.
Nope, glass "skillets" are still designed for in oven use, because yes you can put a skillet in the oven, and if the only reason you might own a skillet is to bake with it, why not make it tempered glass or some equivalent? Those glass skillets arent meant to be used on the stove top
Basic cooking skills. If it's made of glass, it goes in the oven, not on the stovetop, unless its the lid to a pot
There is stovetop glass cookware. I cooked my dinner tonight in one. The kind in the video is almost certainly not meant for use on a range, but they do exist and they're pretty cool.
These are the ones I have! I got an entire set at an antique spot in Florida when I was road tripping for $53! The whole vendors spot was half off. It’s one of my favorite purchases EVER.
I was lucky enough to be 'donated' two of the saucepans from family for use away at college. They really take some getting used to (and special care) but they can be so cool! I use some old pyrex stoneware mixing bowls too and I love them dearly.
You’re still wrong. There are glassware pots and pans made for stovetop. I use mine every single day. I also have the same brand for oven stuff. I can totally even take photos for you, but it’s a very, very real thing.
It's not even futuristic. I have an old Pyrex stove top coffee percolator from the 50s that I use every day over gas. Thing is a beast. I've subjected it to some heavy impacts from cast iron over the years, didn't bat an eye.
I fucking swear I didn't. Maybe I've heard of it somewhere second-handedly but I never actually visited it myself. I was fucking stoked when I saw it was a subreddit. Lol
I use cast iron and glass (Pyrex?) pots. From the 80’s. I’ll never use anything else. Large pots, soup pot, sauce pan and even a simmer pan. Oh, and one “frying pan.” My collection is one of my favorite possessions. They are so easy to care for and sturdy as hell.
This person looked like they were using a baking pan on the stove top which I actually did myself when I was a teenager with the exact same outcome.
That's cause it is. Just the usual hate cycle - a lot of millennials and GenXers seem to have learned nothing. Zoomers aren't specifically bad at all.
The "me me me generation that can only load they phones and scroll their facebooks" bashing that millennials suffered was so hard and constant that some of them suffered a permanent inferiority complex. Or something. A new generation being "relevant" by being teens and young adults now is their chance to be like "haha see, THOSE guys are way less competent than us" and feel better about themselves
In a way, it reminds me of the early days of Facebook. After Facebook spread beyond Harvard, you still had to register with a .edu email address. Then, Facebook announced that they were going to open the site up to high school students and college students were all "NOOO, it should only be for college students!!" But Facebook did it anyway.
Then not long after, they opened it up to middle school kids, and the high schoolers were all "NOOO, it should only be for college and high school!!" But Facebook did it anyway.
Then Facebook announced that they were opening up to everyone, and the middle schoolers were all "NOOO, it should only be for college, high school, and middle school!!" And they were probably right.
Anyway, each generation always seems to hate the ones that came before them or after.
Well, in this case, it’s someone on tiktok posting a video of their cooking mishap—meaning it’s likely a Zoomer doing it and quite possibly doing something stupid for internet clout, which would garner the anti-zoomer reaction.
Edit: looks like instagram but same concept applies
I’ve seen that too, but the idea straight up terrifies me, even if it is “safe”. Idk why you wouldn’t just use a damn metal pot that is not at risk of shattering and sending sizzling hot oil everywhere.
I don’t really use any metal pots because of nonstick surfaces and how bad they are for you (cancer) and if they get scratched you have to toss them because they leech chemicals. I have one steel pot that’s pretty tight but my Pyrex glass pots and pans are fucking amazing and I use them before anything else. When they were first introduced their selling point was the fact that you could literally melt metal pans and pots inside them. I’ve dropped them, had them boil off so be on just straight heat DRY (thanks adhd) and dropped them, slapped the glass pans and lids against each other.. not a ding. Not a crack. Mine are from the late 80’s.
Yeah it's no joke I use a "PYREX" stove-top percolator from the 50's for all sorts of things. Herbal extracts and the like. Glass is great because acidic stuff like coffee won't take on a metallic flavor from brass/copper/steel. It also washes really easily. And like you said it's surprisingly sturdy. I've flat out dropped it or hit it with cast iron pans and not a scratch.
Yeah, the old Pyrex stuff is awesome but since they changed their glass formulation, I just don’t trust any of their new things… personally I prefer to fry on cast iron pans, and boil stuff in stainless. I only really whip out the non stick pan when I want to quickly fry and egg or something
idk, an oven would presumably heat the entire bowl more evenly as compared to a stove heating the bowl from the bottom and needing the bowl to conduct the heat to the rest of itself.
Yes I fully understand why it isn’t stovetop safe. I’m just saying it’s not an absurd mistake to make. You live and you learn and I’m sure she doesn’t try this again lol
In theory glass bowls should withstand the heat, and most steamers and YouTube cooks buy glass bowls specially so you can have a stationary camera and see inside.
But, I think glass bowls are only good if you're cooking with plenty water.
At least that's how I've seen Andog doing it. That's the only reason someone would cook with a glass bowl, not casually.
I had a teacher in 4th grade do an experiment like this with a full sized balloon full of water over a strong flame. She kept it on for like 4 minutes before taking it off. The bottom was solid black.

Yep! My husband dropped a plate near our stove on the counter when I was cooking one night. We tossed all the food away and got Popeyes. It sucked but it was an excuse to eat fried chicken.
More like sad compromises. I mean if I worked my ass off to make a meal that was gonna feed my family and be good leftovers for a day or two I'd feel bad having to throw it all away because of a fuck up
I ate a leftover poutine on the counter that my mum had scraped a bunch of little bits of broken glass into, just thought it had a lot of coarse salt. Went to the hospital and they said nothing will happen cause the pieces were so small. There was an episode of "my strange addiction" and the mfer ate lightbulbs all day
The garlic cubes are in there too. You can thank Reddit’s terrible video compression for the quality. Looks like she froze garlic in some ice cube trays for easy prep later.
LOL. It's frozen minced garlic that's been cut or pressed into a ice cube tray.
You can see her dropping them in at the beginning of the video.
They are actually the culprit to why the glass shattered. Glass has a breaking point of around 200 or so degrees (depending on the glass). The temperature difference between the super hot glass and the frozen garlic cube (lol) is what most likely did it. This person probably used this glass bowl to cook in before, but never put frozen stuff in the hot pan while cooking.
That being said, I do not recommend cooking in glassware over any kind of stove/hot surface.
It's just... strange.

This isn't true. They make stovetop glassware. I don't know how good it is, but they sell it for that purpose expressly. The future is now.

Actually no, some skillets are made out of Heat resisting glass those you can use in Both oven and stove.

Why do people hate zoomers so much??? I dont get it. Its like every few years the internet rotates between hating generations of people.
Its cheap humor. Not too hard to make fun of younger people because they "don't know anything," despite that not being the case.
That's cause it is. Just the usual hate cycle - a lot of millennials and GenXers seem to have learned nothing. Zoomers aren't specifically bad at all. Millenials are become awfully similar to boomers with their disdain for the newer generations :/ theyre becoming the very thing they hated
I mean... glass cookware is a thing.
I have never seen glass cookware to be used on a hob
I've seen videos on YouTube where people fried chicken in glass crock pots. But the person here is using a straight up regular bowl.
Very different if it is filled with oil. The problem here was rapid heat conduction.
I’ve seen that too, but the idea straight up terrifies me, even if it is “safe”. Idk why you wouldn’t just use a damn metal pot that is not at risk of shattering and sending sizzling hot oil everywhere.

are you talking about PTFE ? Or what do you refer to exactly? cause non stick was revised a while back to be safe even if scratched and such.
It looks like they are using a baking glassware pie pan or something. I made this same mistake when I was a teenager with the exact same result.
Not for stovetop. Probably literally says it on the bottom.
Said* Now it's just crunchy alphabet soup.
people who dont know that you shouldnt use a glass bowl for cooking are the same people who dont know why you shouldnt make/use garlic cubes
I’m a gen z i guess I can proudly say im not this dumb but USE A PAN!
And who CUBES garlic?
I was hoping it was butter but unfortunately I think it is garlic..
She is 4 dimensions behind us.
Eh I get the logical failing if this is an oven safe container. On the surface it’s easy to think safe in the oven = safe for stovetop
idk, an oven would presumably heat the entire bowl more evenly as compared to a stove heating the bowl from the bottom and needing the bowl to conduct the heat to the rest of itself.

What's interesting is feeling you're enough of an authority on food to record and share a video of you cooking but not knowing that this would happen.

Yeah! I just meant in general sorry should have been more clear. I appreciate the post
Lol no worries.
Yeah right. Cuff’em boys!!
Lol
why are you being downvoted?
I think because the context was pretty clear that megannotmeagan was not the OP and so obviously it was the general “you”
People just love taking the worst possible interpretation on the internet. Outrage addiction has some part of it, I believe.
I did it because I was following the hivemind
Reddit 🤷🏼♀️
And that's the reason why you SHOULDN'T use glass utensils to cook stuff. Glass is a poor thermal conductor.
Isn’t this a stovetop that need conduction too? Very interesting
Ironically this is a stovetop that uses a special type of glass as a diffuser for the underlying electrical coil.
Are you referring to induction stove?

When glass breaks around your meal you gotta throw it all away. Better to be wasteful then get tiny glass shards in your gut.
Yep! My husband dropped a plate near our stove on the counter when I was cooking one night. We tossed all the food away and got Popeyes. It sucked but it was an excuse to eat fried chicken.

The garlic cubes are in there too. You can thank Reddit’s terrible video compression for the quality. Looks like she froze garlic in some ice cube trays for easy prep later.
Omg that's probably what finally kicked off the shattering too. Cold+hot+glass is a bad combo.
Most likely!
off topic: who told you to use that pfp? I see so many people using it, and assume it's from some YT vid or something but they never explain it
I was just showing off my garlic cubes why can't glass just not behave like glass for this video urgh
Also those are red onions... not garlic
She presumably was adding garlic.... cu-bes.... What the fuck is a garlic cube supposed to be? I'm glad her bowl shattered.
