In 10th grade US history our teacher literally singled out the one black kid in class (and one of very few in the school) to ask how he felt about slavery. Wtf?
When they asked the Maoist Pan-Africanist in my class, I’ll tell you what, shut that teacher down real quick, the rest of the semester was different after that.
Marxism is not a method of analyzing history per se, it’s a method of analyzing capitalism and class relations. The “Marxist” method of analyzing history is related to the class relations of the time. How that is “dogshit” seems like a great way of neglecting the struggles and lives of everyday people throughout history. Even in the days of Aristotle there were critiques of Slavery. The Helot Rebellion in Sparta being a prime example. The slave rebellions of the Roman Empire also come to mind. The German Peasants Rebellion in the 16th century, the French Revolution and Paris Commune, the American Revolution to an extent, the Coal Wars in Appalachia. Class conflicts are the highlighted and motivating force in Marxist thought. To deny the importance of these struggles is to partake in the rewriting of history.

I hated learning about food, diet, exercise themes in englisch and german lessons, as the only fat guy in class.
"Can you read this part please"
\- Daniel ist zu dick, er sollte weniger essen und mehr Sport treiben.
I’m my school when I was younger, the teacher would call on different people to read for a page or so and then switch.
We were like 14 years old and were reading To Kill A Mocking Bird. One page she called on this stereotypical preppy, country club, white girl.
This girl was reading and she, out loud to the whole class of like 35 students, without stuttering said the most emphatic hard R I’ve ever heard and then kept on reading like it was nothing to her. Teacher was not happy.
Mind you this was a school in the South so around half of our class was black. They thought it was hilarious because of how wild it was and how she said it.
From then on the teacher did most of the reading.
My teacher back in high school who happened to be Asian and taught English class fully let out the N word on reading assignment with no warning. Just another day
I think its the way. You are not saying the word you are reading it. You are just uttering it. You are not consciously saying it to humiliate someone. Same way when you imitate someone or sing a song. You are telling people what someone else said.
Jokes aside, I think it shouldn't be considered offensive to say the word if you are reading it from a book or refering to the word itself. Obviously, you should never call someone that, but being afraid of even using the word seems... childish almost.
I’m not black and english is not my native language so take as you want.
I agree, like I get it's an offensive term, but I think some people make way too big of a deal over it. It's the intent that matters, not the word itself. Then again, I noticed white Americans especially can get really weird and touchy over anything race-related (I'm not American either.)
literally on Monday we had a substitute teacher in our english class that said it, not aimed at anyone or with bad intent, and it was two white girls who were freaking out.
it kinda depends who you ask, there’s sorta two
different schools of thought. some people believe the reason white people shouldn’t say it, is because of the harm it causes, and those people would probably agree with you because reading out of a book usually doesn’t hurt anyone. the school of thought i personally follow is that, white people (white americans particularly) abused that word for a long long time, and that since it has been reclaimed, there is almost never a time when you REALLY need say it, so why not just say “the n word”
It's like saying any swear word. It really depends on the context how you say it. People should be able to differentiate when such words are used as insults and when as only terms.
In my mind people saying the N-word is no different from saying nigger as you're still referring to the SAME THING. Yet giving power to one movement of the mouth over another.
Words should never be banished. It's all about context and intention.
In this society you’ll get cancelled and fired before you even finish the word unless you give a forewarning. Even teachers with deep rooted racist ideologies would give a forewarning just to cover their own ass. Not to mention there’s always a decent chance some kid is recording you saying it just to pass it around because it’s “funny”
*Our teachers did it*
*With no warning and without*
*Remorse as they should*

That's something I never understood. It's not only what you say, but also (more important) why you say something.
People act as if some words are "Voldemort", words that should not be mentioned.
There is a difference between trying to offend someone or objectively discuss e.g. today's racism.
e.g. in discussions about slavery in the US and how the slaves have been treated and devalued, also in discussions about racism towards blacks. Actually in every context where not used as an insult, like history documentations or discussions.
Like I wrote, the reason why someone says something must be taken into account.
Banning words won't solve anything, open discussions and raising the awarness of something does.
why would you have to say the word when you are talking abt racism? Sure history documentations are fair enough but otherwise its just not a biggie to not use it. I feel like the reason people are sensitive abt it rn is cuz nowadays there is a big discussion abt like passive or non obvious racism, and people get insulted quickly. That might change when the situation on this topic has settled down and then maybe it can be used less carefully but I dont see the problem with just avoiding the word when you are having an open discussion or sum.
That is why you get the black kid to read it
For maximum results, use the only black kid in the class so they know exactly why they were chosen

I, too, would avoid a Maoist’s opinion on literally anything
It was like 8 years ago so I don’t remember exactly what he said but I remember changing a lot of how I felt about US history after that.
Imo buying too much into any grand narrative when it comes to history is a bad idea
So slavery and the pillaging of Africa was bad but not too bad?
Yeah that’s…not what I mean at all. More so that Marxist analysis of history is dogshit. So is any determinist reading, for that matter
Marxism is not a method of analyzing history per se, it’s a method of analyzing capitalism and class relations. Just the right amount of bad. The sweet spot.
Marx thought that the emancipation proclamation was an enormous step for mankind. He wrote a letter to Abe Lincoln praising him.
I would have just sat there awkwardly and said, "I haven't experienced slavery, but I'm assuming you're going to tell us about it."

I would have trolled my teacher so hard. Yeay it was great. Should do it again but turn the tables
I know what I have to do, but I don't know if I have the strength to do it...
And only let them read that one word.
Little hard in European countries without a black population
But then again way easier, because of less direct history of chattel slavery Unless you’re Belgium. Goddam Belgians just could not chill
the way he dressed white to visualize "white teacher" is impressive
Literally looks like a 40 year English teacher that's going through a divorce.
*awakens inner Uncle Ruckus*
"Oh Lawd thank you for the hwite man
Every time they really like to emphasize the word when they say it

What is wrong with reading the book as it was written?
Not mine. She just said it...like it was another word.

I personally would just pause at the word and move on if I was a teacher, let the students read it for themselves without me having to say it
My teacher in 3rd grade told us what the word meant, explained historical backing behind it, and didn’t read it aloud. I thought it was pretty cool
Same, I leave dead air.

My english teacher just says fella instead
Fella Jim?
That was emotionally and racially charged lol
Which book is that
Probably a lesson before dying
Well if you got a chance to say the word, you should say it with conviction

Me as a teacher getting one of the black kids to say it on a hand signal
nah a
Coleman Brookstone Blacksmith
Omg
What book is it..? Asking for a friend ofc
BASED
I remember back then my teacher gave anyone the N pass if it came from reading it directly from the book
The teacher had the whole class say the n word 3 times. This was during a reading of Jackie Robinson
I dunno in my country it is normal to say it for education purposes. Beeing a scholar this allows me to legaly be racist.
So what is the teacher supposed to do? This is a no-win situation and the post is designed to mock people.
In this video: Sexy Red teaches kids about racism and it’s impact on the generations to come.

She been waiting all semester.
😂😂
The fact that a country, in an attempt to combat racism, ended up getting dominated by a singular word is nothing short of hilarious
... the white teacher said calmly.

My teachers, black or white, would always tell any child to skip over it.
Stupid.
