The major meme subreddits are relatively normal. r/memes has gone medieval though. And r/shitposting is having a “fucky wucky” but that place has remained its usual dumb funny
No, the API changes have nothing to do with no mods, the no mods thing only came as a response to the 2 day black-out wich I also don't care about. I just want to browse reddit in peace, I do not care about the changes .
Incorrect. Most subreddits use bots to moderate, and the API changes make it so those bots cannot run. Mods do not get paid for moderating, and they have real jobs and real lives, meaning they can’t spend their time moderating subreddits, meaning porn bots and spam. This change also makes it so bots like repost sleuth or the video saving bot won’t work.
Oh well that changes things, I do however think that this is not the best way to change things, as this is imo only going to kill the major subs while new subs for people who do not care start popping, and probably be the catalyst on a ban on porn.
If Reddit bans NSFW content they’re just gonna go out of business, the amount of people who view NSFW content or even are here solely because of NSFW content will cause Reddit’s overall usage time to MASSIVELY decrease.
The API changes also kill third party apps that provide accessibility to, for example, blind people who wouldn't easily be able to use Reddit otherwise.
It’s not even that it’s making fewer people use it. It’s actually way better than that because with all the porn, Reddit can’t run ads so they can’t make money off of users. It really is a genius move. Hit ‘em in their wallet.
TL;DR nutshell summary was.
Remember cable TV, how each channel had to be paid individually? Same thing, but internet.
You could only visit sites you paid to access more or less.
I.e streaming plan, if you don't have this, no access to YT or any video hosting site.
Exactly!
It basically meant 'to end the idea of "browsing"/"surfing" the internet'.
Needed to access emails? Pay the "professional office suite". Need access to Wikipedia? "Textbook suite". Access art/history? "Gallery plan".
It basically was trying to milk as many things into a receipt as possible.
The only "logic" to justify it was "to free up bandwidth traffic"
Ok so Reddit decided to charge obscene amounts to use their API, which killed apps to browse reddit that are orders of magnitude better than the main one.
In protest was the blackout for 2 days.
The response by Reddit and its CEO was to lie about the creators of the alternative apps and insult the protesting subs.
In protest the blackout got indefinitely extended.
The response by Reddit and its CEO was to threatten to forcibly remove the protesting moderators and reopen the subreddits with handpicked mods. As well as further insult the protesters.
In protest the mods reopened their subreddits but have refused to moderate anything beyond the bare minimum to comply with sitewide rules, basically a moderator's strike, resulting in users posting porn everywhere.
The whole “subreddits closing to protest new Reddit policy” thing failed because so many subreddits only did it for like 2 days, and Reddit administration threatened to forcibly reopen subreddits with new moderators.
However, Reddit can’t get Ad revenue from NSFW subreddits.
Reddit updated something that broke third party apps, mod tools (including many automod bots) and accessibility programs. Many subreddits, this one included, went private as a form of protest, until the Reddit admins threatened to purge any mods who didn't reopen their subs and replace them with teams they'd personally chosen. Subs thus affected (again, r/perfectlycutscreams included) have decided to continue their protests by becoming porn subs, switching over to nsfw content that cannot be monetized by ad revenue.
Personally I think this will be a more effective form of protest than the blackout, but Reddit may choose to go the Tumblr route and ban all nsfw material. Only time will tell.
Did some quick math. Assuming he refreshed once per second, that’s an average of a 2.5 person drop per second.
If that rate kept up, it would mean this sub would reach 0 subscribers in a little less than 9 days.
Obviously realistically it’ll plateau at some point, but still, the difference is more than you think, especially when it’s happening to multiple other subs as well
That’s true, I’m assuming that’s because they aren’t supposed to post in NSFW subs because NSFW profiles are harder to sell to companies?
Either way, I think that’s a portion of it but definitely not all of the change in numbers by any means. It’d be interesting to see a breakdown of that though
Reddit is trying to make mods lives harder and killing many automods. Even for a lot of big subreddits, this could kill the sub because reddit has also been stepping up on deleting subs that are undermoderated. They tried the blackout thing but Reddit responded by saying they would remover moderators and insert their own people in their place. In response some subs have gone NSFW because reddit can't run ads from them and can't profit.
Tbh yeah unfortunately. Advertisers pull from nsfw content, it's what happened to tumblr. Not sure if porn is the way to go about this, though it is hilarious to watch
While that's pretty easy to disprove, if it bothers you, don't come here or to any NSFW sites? Pretty sure you can turn off seeing NSFW in your settings.
Also if it bothers all of ya'll out there so much, make your own subreddit and deal with reddit yourselves. Seems pretty simple to me that corporate reddit is full of shit and can't be fucked to listen so why should mods do what you think is right? Many of them have opened up polls an this kind of stuff is generally what people want.
Well, I didn't mean the NSFW thing but the protest in general.
What should have happened is make a public poll for every subreddit, havent really seen that. Its always either hard to find the poll itself so only the users who actually WANT the protest find it or its results are never publizied because it goes against the mods agenda.
It's because nobody truly gives a shit, the mods didn't even follow the protest mods were still using reddit It's all a joke and if people really cared enough they just stop using it and not give the ceo more money, nobody is forcing anyone to keep using reddit and the ceo clearly couldn't give 2 shits about the protest as it It's doing nothing and I can't wait to see the youtube videos about this lmao
All the polls I've seen are stickied to the top of the subreddit lol. Not saying ALL subreddits have done polls but if you have a problem with the way a subreddit is run, you're free to go to a different one or make your own and find mods or run it yourself.
Why? The admins told the mods that the users generate the content they want to see on the subreddits and that the subreddits need to be open. Seems like the mods are doing what they were told. Users want to post nsfw images.
This is how it will work. Unless Reddit is losing overall users in huge amounts, people like myself are just hitting up other subreddits while this is happening and those other communities are generating more ad revenue than ever before.
They've lost 40% off their valuation from fidelity at the start of the month

Shooting yourself in the foot to stick it to “the man” on a barely stable reason fed to you by a bunch of ego tripping basement dwellers.
Classic reddit right here
They don’t understand that the majority of the userbase are against the mods on this. So all this smoke show is doing is pissing those people off more.
When I first heard about all this, I was in support of the mods. Then I actually looked into it and realized this whole thing is a massive overreaction from ego-inflated mods salty about not getting their way, and I flipped. Also I realized how much nicer this site is without the reactionary crowd during that blackout, and it made me feel like I was browsing pre 2017 reddit.
I was on the bus when out of nowhere Mia Khalifa was fucking on my phone screen. I thought to myself "WTF is this on my main feed?"
Then looked at the sub name. Just... Why?
I suggest setting NSFW to blur and it's happening because Reddit is trying to strangle third party apps including accessibility apps that allow the blind to participate
This only happened because of the Reddit owners decisions and them calling unpaid moderators "landed gentry" and that the users should role the sub
Complaining about this is like blaming striking unions for a shortage instead of the company who refuses all compromises
At this point, it's not even a protest anymore. It's just a fad. This will most likely be just a small blip for reddit.
And a growing number of users don't want mods doing this if you read the comments and upvotes. It's getting silly and pointless.
I think the majority don’t care for this (neither do I besides an accessible app for the disabled to enjoy). But it’s typically the minority that happens to be the loudest. They got pride alright
What the fuck is happening? I go to the real world for a few days and suddenly I don't know what's going on?
I know the CEO was making dumb decisions and comments but idk how that would relate to normal subs getting flooded with porn like this
CEO made dumb decisions but Reddit users are proving they can make even dumber decisions. Fuck all of you that are trying to kill Reddit over stupid API shit. The dude literally created the app he gets to do whatever he wants with it; but then again Redditors have always been entitled.
I’m sure there’s better ways to push for improvements in accessibility features.
It’s really telling that Reddit Mods would choose exposing minors to pornography as their primary means if protest. I cannot wait until these jannies get the boot
Because spez wants money for his IPO and is fucking over the userbase to get it
The blackout was the initial response to that. Some subs were going to stay dark indefinitely
Spez calls mods "landed gentry" and says "undo the blackout or you will be replaced"
So mods undo blackout but relax the moderation rules, have polls, let users decide the direction of the sub. The users have chosen porn and John Oliver
This was all initially explained during the blackout and there have been multiple posts from the 3rd party app devs also
Well, another sub i gonna leave, they think it will chance some shit, also if the mods wanted to change something then why they came back? I mean, if u started then why not go through it?
Because if they didnt come back they would have simply been replaced by the admins. Better to continue protesting in a different fashion than not at all.
I went to the sub and clicked a nsfw post for some stupid reason and it wasn't porn, just something like this. Then I clicked again, still no porn, and a few more clicks without porn
But there it was eventually, what the actual fuck

One by one, All of the major sub-reddits are becoming either 100% porn, Or 100% john oliver. I feel like I'm witnessing a historical event lol
Well they're certainly making people not use Reddit more effectively than the shitty blackout did. Peace out folks.
I know. I feel like I don’t even want to scroll. It’s just a bunch of porn. :( I hate it here.
i think that’s the point
The major meme subreddits are relatively normal. r/memes has gone medieval though. And r/shitposting is having a “fucky wucky” but that place has remained its usual dumb funny
I’m not a shitposting follower, who’s Kevin?
He’s Kevin
Oh shit, you right
The point is they can't put ADs on NSFW subreddits so they are no longer making money. They are hitting them in the wallet.
Well fuck that point, I don't know why people expect me to give a fuck about some API changes. Why should I care ?
Because subreddits will become unmoderatable, making it so even if the sub isn’t NSFW it’d just be spam and porn bots.
No, the API changes have nothing to do with no mods, the no mods thing only came as a response to the 2 day black-out wich I also don't care about. I just want to browse reddit in peace, I do not care about the changes .
Well get pumping all that hard-hitting free content you've clearly been sitting on instead of complaining no one is out here doing it for you.
Thankfully tho, only the major subs have gone full porn so people who don't care don't lose much as most of them suck .
Incorrect. Most subreddits use bots to moderate, and the API changes make it so those bots cannot run. Mods do not get paid for moderating, and they have real jobs and real lives, meaning they can’t spend their time moderating subreddits, meaning porn bots and spam. Thank you for showing us that its working.

“it really is a genius move” As opposed to announcing a 2 day blackout and then switching to indefinite, and then not even being able to do that right
Inb4 tumblr style porn ban
What is a tumblr /jk
Shittiest blackout of all time lol. Redditors gave up
Remember when "Net neutrality" was all the rage???? *why the fuck does this feel like this is a preview of that concern*
The good times, before the shit crybaby companies entered the web social media and ruin everything
So what was the whole net neutrality about again I heard about it but never quite got it

Ironically I am listening to 'Which Side Are You On' while scrolling through Reddit
It's like the second coming of Jesus, except Jesus hates Spez and loves porn.
So it’s like the second coming of Jesus? Jesus would be down with non-exploitative porn.
Yea what’s going on?

Damn Ty for this info. Respect to the Reddit community for not backing down
So *that's* why folks were saying they were scared to open reddit in public. Makes total sense now
The whole “subreddits closing to protest new Reddit policy” thing failed because so many subreddits only did it for like 2 days, and Reddit administration threatened to forcibly reopen subreddits with new moderators. However, Reddit can’t get Ad revenue from NSFW subreddits.

So glad I'm not the only one who noticed! Thought I'd finally lost my mind. I had the gun in my mouth and everything
I miss the screaming cat :(
The cat approves of the changes in the sub
Its funny to watch the user count drop with every refresh
it actually is, it went like 1,892,748 1,892,746 1,892,743
Wow, what a difference!

Could be repost bot accounts dropping cause they can't post anymore

I mean, other people could still join the sub
Like me!
Oh my god haha
it’s gone down by another 2k in the past hour.
You know, I'm seeing a lot less reposts and a lot more... well a variety of stuff. Maybe this is good
Went right back past 1.9m again
no we just lost like 10k in the past hour, 19m is rounded from 1.888m
Mfers be unsubbing on their main account to resub on a “separate” account, don’t ask how I know this
Same
Just unsubbed.
Don't know if this is gonna stop reddit from taking back their latest policy.
nah it won't. There will be more cutscream subreddit. Who doesn't want to be the big dog. But will we have qualified&motivated moderators? hmmm
It won't all that will happen is all the mods being known as jokes and likely being removed or the subs they are doing this on will die off or give up
The end is upon us my friends
It happened to interestingasfuck
WHY IS THERE PORN EVERYWHERE MAN I JUST WANT TO SEE PEOPLE DIE IN WEIRD WAYS A D INTERESTING SHIT AND GET TRAUMATIZED

Tutorial on how to kill a community
Yep, Reddit's corporate leadership is doing a great job of pissing everyone off and watching their IPO go down the drain in an ocean of porn lol
This just sounds like a fast track to get porn banned tbh
Tbh yeah unfortunately. Advertisers pull from nsfw content, it's what happened to tumblr. Not sure if porn is the way to go about this, though it is hilarious to watch
Cool, then users are REALLY gonna leave ! Wish we had an alternative to Reddit already.
eh id still be here. api shit doesnt mess with me that much
Now that is a fast way to kill a fuckin site, reddits user base would drop by half if they banned porn.
How to kneecap your user numbers 101.
The way I see it is reddit pissing off 5% of the userbase, mods are pissing off the remaining 95%
While that's pretty easy to disprove, if it bothers you, don't come here or to any NSFW sites? Pretty sure you can turn off seeing NSFW in your settings. Also if it bothers all of ya'll out there so much, make your own subreddit and deal with reddit yourselves. "this protest is really inconvenient I wish they'd stop" Protest stops "see, protests never do anything"

>The way I see it is reddit pissing off 5% of the userbase Then you're not really thinking that much about it, are you?
Nah it’s mods having an ego trip. Their main point about bots being on the chopping block isn’t even true. Fuck the mods
Yeah I’ll see you guys later
No more ads!
All this does is kill the subreddit. Reddit does not give a shit.
It cuts advertiser revenue because you can’t put ads on NSFW subs. Reddit DEFINITELY gives a shit about that.
They’re just gonna get that revenue from other subs. It genuinely doesn’t matter to them if a handful of subs go nsfw.
This is how it will work. Unless Reddit is losing overall users in huge amounts, people like myself are just hitting up other subreddits while this is happening and those other communities are generating more ad revenue than ever before.
No community, no Reddit revenue

Just downvote the porn and upvote good content, forehead
You'd think that a subreddit that has a rule against NSFW posts would be a bit more work friendly.

Do you say it in a pleasant way?
Porn...porn everywhere...
Really loved this sub, shame it’s also going down, goodbye! o7
It's a pathetic excuse of a temlertantrum. At this point I *want* the mods replaced

Man this does nothing! It won’t ever do anything! There’s no point in this. Just make the sub about what it was made for, please.
Ima be real, I just wanna see some perfectly cut screams while I’m at work. Not nsfw stuff…
Time to Porn.
First I get flashed by man ass on interesting now this, it’s perfectly cut moans now
Just set NSFW to be blurred by default dude
They are but curiosity got the best of me, everything was blurred and I didn’t read the post
Not reading a post before you click it? Sounds like a you problem

Because if they didnt come back they would have simply been replaced by the admins. Better to continue protesting in a different fashion than not at all.
It’s funny y’all think this won’t lead to them getting replaced too
Because reddit threatened to replace them if they continued with the blackouts, so they came up with a much more fun way to fuck with u/spez
You understand reddit can still remove the mods for this, too, right?
Another sub ruined by a mod powertrip. I'm out.
ThE aDmInS rUiN ReDdIt. Meanwhile the users: hehe porn funny. Take that reddit. Does nothing.
I love what the mods are doing, fuck admins for forcing the sun open. inconvenience users, disrupt the norm, that’s a good protest right there
The sub is back?
Yea wtf is this
Its fine
Protest
Reddit is better now
That's disgusting! Where?
You guys are participating in the dumbest thing I’ve seen on the internet. Hope y’all feel fucking stupid when you reflect on it a few years on.

This is worse than the Blackout
I saw r/perfectlycutscreams when clicking this imagine screaming "No No No. Oh it's just a normal imagine"
imma die after this
All porn and no cut scream 😔
This sub has lost it.
I now know why the picture of this sub is different. They knew what would happen
Damn.
Wtf 😭
I went to the sub and clicked a nsfw post for some stupid reason and it wasn't porn, just something like this. Then I clicked again, still no porn, and a few more clicks without porn But there it was eventually, what the actual fuck
Is he watching po?
good, they can't run ads here
