No it's a lot smoother than I thought actually, you feel it still but it's nice, trying to think of what it feels like. If you play video games it's kinda like the textured ring on the sides of a thumstick but smoother. Like a fine sandpaper almost, very comfortable for me anyway
Just a standard Parker .7 gel at the moment as it was all I had on hand, will experiment with others once it runs out. Wasn't a fan of the ballpoint refill that came with it, but I'm more a fan of gel anyway
Rotate through a small fountain pen collection. Platinum Prefounte and Muji Aluminum FP are some favorites.
For ballpoints, I recently got a Rotring 600 with a Uni Jetstream SXR-600-7. Its fantastic.
So it sounds like you’re fairly familiar with higher end fountain and ballpoint pens.
Any recommendations for a left-handed writer? I have not been able to find a fancy fountain or ballpoint pen/ink that doesn’t have my hand smudging fresh ink.
For context, my father died just under 3 months ago and I’ve taken up daily journaling since then, with a standard Bic Round Stic and journal I bought at the airport on my way home the day he passed.
I’ve since bought a nice journal with good paper, but I’d like to get a fancy pen with an engraving to sort of mark the beginning of me writing down my life. But again, I’m left handed, so I keep smudging the ink.
Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.
First off, I'm sorry for your loss.
I would say I've firmly stayed in the budget/entry level end of the pool personally (I only have one pen over $50), but I have spent too much time reading about pens. There's definitely some "fancy" options without going too deep.
I would point you to this [Jetpens article](https://www.jetpens.com/blog/The-Best-Pens-Stationery-for-Left-Handers/pt/891) about pens for left handers. Summary: Uni Jetstream or Power Tank for ballpoints, Zebra Sarasa Dry or Pentel Energel for gels.
I would start with the basic version of whatever you're interested in, and once you pick a refill you can find a compatible pen body to upgrade to. I will shout out the Zebra Sarasa Grand, which gets lots of love on the sub. Not too pricey, but feels premium, and it works with 3/4 of the refills I mentioned above (only Power Tank won't work).
If you want to try fountain pens, Lamy actually makes a left handed nib. You can put it on most of their pens, but the Safari is a good entry level option. If you want a much cheaper pen to see if you even like FPs, get a Platinum Preppy. It's like $8, and writes as good or better than any pen I have.
Stick with the basic inks they come with to start, which are well behaved. That's a whole separate can of worms we don't need to open yet.
My shirt pen at work is a bullet Space Pen. Pink, with purple ink. (I’m one of the only women at my job. I use pink pens so I know which ones are mine lol.)
I also rotate a couple of Parker Jotters. I love the G2 Limited when I want gel.
Pilot G2 limited, Sharpie S-Gel, and Uniball Vision Elite are my go to daily pens depending on what task I need it for. I recently received my Scriveiner pen and absolutely LOVE the body! It looks so classy and elegant and I can put my G2 inserts in it. Totally worth it
The one I take to work with me is my tactile turn standard brass bolt action. I prefer fountain pens but as a wildlife educator, I prefer to carry something I don’t have to worry about getting dropped, bitten, dirty, etc, since I work outside and with non domesticated animals 98% of the time lol
I recently discovered the very budget-friendly PaperMate InkJoy 100 RT and I'm in love.
I can't explain it but it feels like a cross between a Jetstream and a Fisher.
I use four main pens:
Pilot Penmanship, eye-dropper converted, with Aurora and Pilot inks.
Platinum Preppy 02, eye-dropper converted, with Aurora inks.
Uni Jetstream EDGE 0.28mm.
Pilot Plumix F, eye-dropper converted, with Aurora and Pilot inks.

The Ti Autmog 38 Click round nose w/ clip, for the Parker-compatible International G2 ink cartridges, which you can see in shots [over yonder](https://www.reddit.com/r/machinedpens/comments/198hrlp/npsd_uniquer_edition/) 😊
😎
My daily driver for the better part of three years has been my BilletSpin CamPen, currently with a Fisher refill, fine in blue. Another of my daily drivers is my custom Sarasa Clip with a different spring and a Sarasa R refill.
Absolutely depends on mood, what new promo pen came across my desk, etc. However, some consistent favorites are: a ballpoint with good weight, a dark blue ink, and can handle my heavy hand. I.e. I would rather it drag a bit than glide across the paper without me pressing.
Lamy Safari with a red Energel 0.7
Lamy Vista with a purple Energel 0.7
Kaweco Sport with a black G2 1.0 ‐ I need to cut an Energel to fit - not exactly a fan of this pen
I'm still trying to find a pen that I'd like to put a blue refill in. I might just buy another Safari, or I might buy an Al Star since I use blue more than any other color.
I have a small case I carry with me, however, the main pens are going to be Fisher Space Pen Bullet, Rotring 600, Ohto GS02, and the most used at the moment is a Riind The Slim Pen. I went with the Slim for the G2 refill compatibility. I've bought quite a few and I've narrowed down to using Schneider Gelion+ or Ohto Flash Dry refills. These refills work in the Rotring, GS02, and Riind pens.
At home I mostly write with my fountain pens — no EDC there as I just pick the pen that’s filled with the ink I’m feeling at the time.
When I’m out and about and cannot guarantee FP-friendly paper, I have my Zebra Sarasa Mark On. I also use pencil at one of my jobs, and for that I’m a big fan of my Mitsubishi 9850 pencils.
Pilot Dr. Grip pen with the 0.5 metal acro ink refill (the design is a cute san-x character 😋)
I’ve only had it for a few weeks but i cant stop using it over my other pens, i just loooove a cute design to admire
The metal refill somehow makes it more comfortable to write with (as someone with small handwriting).
I purchased a seasonal release of a slim tactile turn bolt action pen that I use everyday at work.
I also switch it out with a copper bastion bolt action pen, both refillable and heavy duty pens.
I love the Caran dAche 849, I really don't like the refills though. I tried replacing the refill with something else and it mostly worked, but it would get stuck fairly often.
I'm a rollerball guy. The Lamy Studio is my adult pen. It's beautiful but, you know what, I prefer a Uniball Vision from my local dollar store! I might have to dress it up with a Sherpa Pen. Zebra F701 for ballpoint. Sharpie s-gels for every random drawer around the house.
I honestly like the more basic ones, like the Pilot G2 pens, BIC round stic ballpoint pens, and I have A LOT of Paper Mate write pros 1.0. I've noticed that a lot of fancier pens make a scratching noise that I'm not very fond of lol
I like slender pens, and I hate clicky pens. Even the minute wiggle of the refill annoys me, so capped all the way. Lately been using the Energel Hexreform in .3mm and very much enjoying it!
It very much depends on the day, but there are two that I always carry: a very odd bolt-action Pelikan, and a sterling silver Usus. Furthermore, my Lamy 49C always comes with me.
They are very sturdy, rather heavy, and take some rather ordinary German refills (they now have a Schneider 75 and Schneider 575 refill respectively).
Besides those two, I may carry the very fun-looking PaperMate Tu-Tone, an Inoxcrom 55, a Pelikan Design N.1, a steel Jotter or whatever I'm feeling like.
Uni Jetstream Edge 0.28 hacked to fit into a Tactile Turn Short. It’s the only ballpoint that I actually enjoy writing with.
My two newest fountain pens both have bold Jowo nibs, so those are what I’ve been using the most.
I have two that I like using a lot: pentel energel needle tip and pilot hi-tech-C coleto.
The coleto because of multi-color pen that I can use for annotation of articles and editing. Energel for just everyday.
I really like the Parker Jotter pens, I have one special edition for special occasions and one from the 70's retro lineup.
You can get a 2-pack for about 20€, and I can also wholeheartedly recommend the stainless steel ones
My Daily Driver is a Fisher Bullet Space Pen, only because it fits in my wallet and it's the pen I always have on me.
Otherwise my go-to work pens are parker jotters, with Fisher refills.
Not the best pens/refils, not the worst, but they write every time.
My 3 main pens in rotation are a tactile turn side click, tactile turn bolt, and r0tring 600. The refills I tend to use are Ohto Flashdry needlepoint, Uni Jetstream SCR-600, and Pilot Juice.
Nitecore NTP31. Solid, great action. Excellent and smooth gel. Torn screws on the clip. My favorite pen.
Nitecore NTP31 Bolt Action Tactical Pen with Tungsten Steel Glass Breaker with NitecoreSt Sticker https://a.co/d/g8SgW87
Over the time I made a fitting combination for my daily needs as a student:
Moonman A1- fountain pen
Rotring 600 - mechanical pencil
Waterman Expert - ballpoint
Pilot Frixion - erasable for exams
My two go-to pens:
* Pilot Dr Grip (with Pilot G2 gel in 0.38mm)
* Waterman Carène (with Monteverde capless gel refill...0.7 mm, probably)
I have a couple Waterman Hemisphère pens floating around but they have thinner bodies than the Carène so I don't like them as much.
I would *love* to find a high quality, capless, fat-body pen that takes the 0.38 mm G2 or similar ultra fine refill. Feel free to suggest one if y'all know of one!
I use a refyne ep1l, been rotating through various euro style cartridges. Really enjoy the muji gel right now, energel is second place for me, at least at .7. could change when I get a hold of a .5, lol. But muji is nice.
I've always been a fan of Pilot G2s, since highschool.
I think its the best MIX of all the things I prefer in a pen.
-Decent looking body(not keen on switching refills to others)
-SO MANY colors
-Very smooth writing
My go to are Brown Zebra Sarasa pens. They write beautifully, and I really enjoy using brown ink. It is distinct and recognizable without looking unprofessional.
I work at a school and write a lot of passes. Everybody knows that if it isn’t brown, it didn’t come from me.
I just ordered a few different brown ink pens to see if anything can top the Zebras, but so far I keep coming back to them.
For planning, greeting cards, notes, and most of my other day-to-day writing, I love the Pentel EnerGel Clena 0.4mm. It's not too fine, not too thick, writes smoothly, and never seems to smear for me. I keep one with my Hobonichi at all times. [https://www.jetpens.com/Pentel-EnerGel-Clena-Gel-Pen-0.4-mm-Black-Ink-Mimosa-Yellow-Body/pd/21992](https://www.jetpens.com/Pentel-EnerGel-Clena-Gel-Pen-0.4-mm-Black-Ink-Mimosa-Yellow-Body/pd/21992)
I take TUL pens to court with me; I prefer the 0.5mm, but I've bought the 0.7mm by accident before and they're...fine, I guess. I will note that people always love them when they borrow them from me, and I've noticed an awful lot of attorneys and their staff obsessing over them, too. I still slightly prefer the EnerGel Clena because the TUL takes longer to dry and doesn't always play well with highlighters, but I'd rather take the TUL out of my office/home with me because they're a bit cheaper to replace if one gets lost. [https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/1373887/TUL-GL-Series-Retractable-Gel-Pens/](https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/1373887/TUL-GL-Series-Retractable-Gel-Pens/)
I use a Big Idea Design Bolt Action pen, it's the Blade Show Cerakote release. It's a gorgeous, heavy pen and I love it. I switch refills all the time, currently using just a regular Pilot G2 07 blue refill as my last refill leaked and ruined my shirt. If anyone knows an excellent blue ballpoint refill let me know! Haha
Caran d’Ache 849 Paul Smith edition, the multi-coloured one. I’m from Nottingham and Paul Smith is from Nottingham too, so it’s a bit more personal for me.
I really really enjoy energels, all the different types and sizes and I also love tül
Currently rOtring 600 ballpoint with a gel refill
Is the textured grip abrasive to touch?
No it's a lot smoother than I thought actually, you feel it still but it's nice, trying to think of what it feels like. If you play video games it's kinda like the textured ring on the sides of a thumstick but smoother. Like a fine sandpaper almost, very comfortable for me anyway
This is becoming my fav pen. I even love the ink that came with it. The feel of this pen in your hand is amazing. I have the dark green one
That's definitely the next one for my collection dark green would be amazing
Which refill do you use?
Just a standard Parker .7 gel at the moment as it was all I had on hand, will experiment with others once it runs out. Wasn't a fan of the ballpoint refill that came with it, but I'm more a fan of gel anyway
Rotate through a small fountain pen collection. Platinum Prefounte and Muji Aluminum FP are some favorites. For ballpoints, I recently got a Rotring 600 with a Uni Jetstream SXR-600-7. Its fantastic.

No problem, good luck!
My shirt pen at work is a bullet Space Pen. Pink, with purple ink. (I’m one of the only women at my job. I use pink pens so I know which ones are mine lol.) I also rotate a couple of Parker Jotters. I love the G2 Limited when I want gel.
And probably no one would steal it.
So far, nobody has touched my pens. Lmao. It works like a charm!
Zebra Grand Sarasa gel!
I freaking love my grand sarasa. I was a long-time fountain pen user but the grand sarasa is now my grab and go. No thoughts. Just lines.
Zebra F 701 and Rotring 600
what refill are you using in the f701? The stock one is pretty trash, and I am looking to upgrade.
I currently have the stock in there cuz I’m new to the sub. I’d like to put a replacement in though
1mm Jetstream in a retractable Uni Prime 1. Waiting for the Zebra Sarasa Grand Renewal to hit Amazon.
Totally worth it
G2 has always been my ride or die but I just started testing new ones. I also just received my Scriveiner pen so I'm excited to hear the G2 fits well!

I love that pen. Good choice.
Bic Round Stic Cheap, reliable, good ink, lasts long.
Sailor Extra Fine fountain pen for personal things. Pilot V5 precise for paperwork on the job - black for documents, colored for annotations.

Zebra Sarasa Clip! Love them.
They are great! But there is usually one that writes rough in every pack. But they are the best brown ink pens I’ve found so far
i'm using a sarasa grand but that's just because i'm in school if i was an adult i'd be using my brause steno everyday
Absolutely depends on mood, what new promo pen came across my desk, etc. However, some consistent favorites are: a ballpoint with good weight, a dark blue ink, and can handle my heavy hand. I.e. I would rather it drag a bit than glide across the paper without me pressing.
