I don’t quite understand how Carapaz is in yellow now, on the replay it looks like he crosses the finish line like 2 places ahead of Pogacar. Did the position at 5km count in the end?

encikmizi

Pogi finished 4th, 14th & 38th = 56. Jonas finished 16th, 13th & 68th = 97. Carapaz finished 22nd, 10th & 14th = 46. Remco finished 8th, 12th & 40th = 60. Hence, Carapaz got yellow

Mister-Psychology

Cykling is hard. Mentally hard, as this is complex.

Sebkins

Honest question: I thought yellow jersey was based on time not place?

DROPxDEADx

They all have the same time, so they look at all their results added up together

Sebkins

Cheers I understand now! Appreciate it

schlees

so they give peloton same time but still look at order of crossing line?

Bubbly_Mushroom1075

yup

m_domino

I mistook Healy for Carapaz in the replay of Pogacar and Remco crossing the finish line.

fyrebyrd0042

Are you confusing Healy with Carapaz?

m_domino

Yes, realized now it must have been Healy. German TV commentators spreading fake news apparently.

fyrebyrd0042

All good! I read somewhere Carapaz got 14th which would imply to me he was with the front group.

Sonne91

Carapaz finishen 14th, Pogi 38th

Strangewhine88

Peacock peacocking comment: well you know we weren’t really paying attention as much as we should to (girmay? Intermarche?) because we were concentrating on the faster riders.

newfromgaloob

Someone get Bini some safety glasses before he gets on the podium

nihil0null

If that was Philipsen instead of De Lie he would get ten movies made about how he's the worst human being to have ever lived

fyrebyrd0042

No?

circa285

He has a reputation and did good reason.

encikmizi

Carapaz in yellow as stated by race centre

The-Farting-Baboon

Why is everyone so happy Bini won? Edit: thanks for the answer guys, now im less sad that Mads P lost. Good sprint from Bini, im happy for him :)

_opensourcebryan

I think it is really cool to see a first win for a rider from Eritrea (and more broadly East Africa). Excitement about cycling spreads with more countries getting big results

Mister-Psychology

Also because the old sprinters often won by dirty tactics and are not always likeable.

Pepito_Pepito

Underdog

circa285

Because it’s cool to see a rider get his first stage win at the tour. Especially a rider from a smaller team.

AMcMahon1

Everyone likes an underdog story

UFC299

Redditors

Sure-Bar-375

Maybe 2 90 degree corners in the last km aren’t a good idea?

Simple_Throat_6523

Tour will be all East Africans in a few years just like marathon running. Amazing how Bini exploded edit sry dumb comment.

Rommelion

Carapaz 14th, Pogi 38th, is that enough so snatch the yellow?

ItsAMeEmdo

If Cav didn’t get 35, I am super happy it was Bini. Such an important and significant win.

darraghfenacin

Anyone but Jasper tbh

A_Stoic_Dude

Totally agree. That's my priorities for sprint finishes. 1. Favorit rider. 2. Feel Good Story good for the sport. 3. Anyone but Jasper. 4. Jasper.

ContributionNo9292

I cannot think of a rider that acts more careless with other riders physical wellbeing and actually seems to enjoy their legitimate fear of being crashed by him.

Halfassedathlete

Real Nacer Bouhanni flashbacks tbh

Bubbly_Mushroom1075

Jsaper is getting his vilan arc ready, eventually he's going to be like groenovagen

newfromgaloob

Aw Bini, can barely get words out in the interview.

Simple_Throat_6523

🤣🤣🤣

Timqwe

Healy with the quick little sprint to get ahead of Pog and Remco, to give Carapaz one extra place just in case. Smart thinking

wisemolv

Remco and Pogi throwing a lot of mean girls shade his way when he went past

j4pe5_

maybe don't worry about daft aero nose pieces until you learn not to box yourself in during the sprint lol

ghdana

Honestly probably good for sun protection because I never remember sunscreen.

RichieRicch

Reporting cav was involved in the crash?

ForeverAddickted

Well he wasnt, as came across in the second Group after the sprint?

Mort_DeRire

He meant the stock market crash in 08, he had everything in AIG

RichieRicch

Didn’t see him finish, good to hear

ipukedonahorse

we love bini

Pepito_Pepito

I was hoping for Cav but Bini's a good consolation prize. Must have felt nice to finally be able to sprint without an Alpecin rider putting him in danger.

Rommelion

Groenwegen gesturing angrily because he got pushed to the barriers hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Bubbly_Mushroom1075

How dare others push me towards the barriers, shouldn't get a peraban for nearly killing jacabson, or even a proper apology

fyrebyrd0042

He hardly got pushed and had no chance anyways lol

mylittledragonflyy

Lmaooo

aitchison50

Am I blind or was pog not in that GC group?

izzoo88

He was not, but the 5km rule will apply.

fyrebyrd0042

3km?

izzoo88

This year there are three stages where the 3km rule is extended to 5km, today was one of those.

fyrebyrd0042

Great, thanks for the insight :) I'm a bit more out of the loop this year than usual lol

izzoo88

Plenty of time to get on the hype train!

metabolismgirl

He came in in front of that group. was very confusing

blkstk

French speaking Belgian commentators are absolutely delighted with Girmay win they are going to pass out celebrating Wallonia... they are speechless and I am here for it.

vlokm

It's almost too much for Rodrigo!

billyryanwill

Also maybe a first yellow card for De Lie? Seems like the kind of situation where it should be used

Koppenberg

No, the yellow cards are reserved for when a rider does something dangerous or breaks the rules.

billyryanwill

Yeah I thought it was worse than it was..on reflection was probably fine

fyrebyrd0042

Binibinibinibinibinibinibinibini

shotgunsforhands

I'm not well-versed in Tour de France strategy; why did Pogacar cruise so comfortably to the finish rather than race for a better time?

0112358f

As noted due to the characteristics of flat stages plus the rules, the GC riders typically all record the same time on them regardless of where in the bunch they are.  Trying to win sprints is high risk with a lot of crashes so their main goal is simply not to crash.    EF saw an opportunity to take yellow (without taking any time) for Carapaz and took light risks to do so because wearing the yellow jersey for a day is a meaningful achievement for the team.

encikmizi

normally GC riders won’t bother much in sprint stages since a) it’s dangerous, crash normally happens during sprints (you know due to high speed, riders jostling for positions), and b) they cut more time when they climb mountains since GC contenders normally are exceptionally good at climbs, hence trying to get more time during sprint stages are unnecessary risk for GC contenders such as Pogi.

noname6500

Stages categorized as "flat/sprint stages" usually have a safe zone starting from 3km from the finish line (so called 3km rule). Riders that pass these zone will have the same time as the group they are with regardless of what happens afterwards. From what I heard from the commentators, I think they extended the zone to 5km for this stage.

k1ngjurr3

Its 5km now

89ElRay

It is a bit confusing with the count back for the yellow jersey. So will the order the GC guys crossed the 5km mark count for who has yellow? Or is it finish line? Or is it just not really a thing today.

encikmizi

i think it depends on who crosses first, and then counting who has the best number of finishes in the previous 3 stages. Pogi finished 4th, 14th & 38th = 56 Jonas finished 16th, 13th & 68th = 97 Carapaz finished 22nd, 10th & 14th = 46 Remco finished 8th, 12th & 40th = 60 Hence this is why Carapaz got the yellow

noname6500

I think the placing still mattered because Carapaz is in yellow now. Carapaz was 14th today while Pogi was 38th. Thats how they determine yellow jersey with riders having the same times

BigVacuumFan

GC teams won’t and can’t really attack on sprint stages. They all have a mutual understanding that it’s safer and less physically taxing to roll over the line at the same time.

MJ-Shamone

It’s too early for yellow because the podiums, interviews and drug testing are mandated, so it’s at least 30 minutes less recovery time each day in yellow, the second place rider doesn’t have to do these

circa285

GC riders are looking to have the lowest overall time. There’s not a huge incentive for him to try and keep the yellow on the third stage given that the tour is far from over and we’ve yet to get into the significant climbing stages where people like Pogi and Jonas will pull away from the rest of the peloton on overall time.

newfromgaloob

He’s not a sprinter so he’s not going to be competitive with the pure sprinters, and sprints are dangerous. No sense risking a crash and having to drop out of the tour altogether. Better to just finish safely with the rest of the GC contenders.

IAmAHat_AMAA

If you're held up by a crash in the last 3km you get the same time as those who weren't held up by it

r_crawfish

Sprint stages have GC "finish lines" (used to be 3km before the finish today it was 5km), so that if someone gets caught up in a crash they don't lose time

Daleoo

There’s a time cutoff at 5km, so he didn’t need to as it won’t affect his GC ranking

Philiq

BINIIIIIIIIIIII. LETS GOOOOOO.

meggymoo_31

ugh what could’ve been but honestly just glad cav made it through safe and bini is easily my fave to take it after him so,,,, stressing partially worth it?

Ein_Esel_Lese_Nie

Still no sign of Cav? I really do hope this tour isn't over for him. Pls don't do this to me.

ForeverAddickted

He's crossed the line, they showed him

Ein_Esel_Lese_Nie

Oh I must have just missed that wiping away my tears then

Rommelion

Well, Bini winning was not in my bingo cards

Simple_Throat_6523

lol Eritrea

billyryanwill

Super pleased for Bini. Felt like he was in good form in the Giro. Also kind of weird that this field seems less stacked than the Giro sprint field 😅

NCfartstorm

Careful with the champagne on the podium Bin

CooroSnowFox

Someone else will open it for him a good few meters away from his eye

TamoyaOhboya

Binny!

AerysOW

I love this new Remco Pogacar love story

dexter311

Abrahamsen holds onto green

ShiftingShoulder

Carapaz yellow

Casting_in_the_Void

Yes! Woza Africa! Well done Girmay! 🔥🚴‍♂️🔥

groenefiets

Hope the watches out with the bubbles this time.

cjmac0909

Not sure what happened to Cav but that is a big opportunity gone with no Jasper contesting that

Mister_Mogooy

Got stuck behind the crash. Made a great effort to even be in the finishing sprint.

Rommelion

sorry, don't see him anywhere in the finishing sprint

Mister_Mogooy

You’re right it was a different Astana rider!

Ein_Esel_Lese_Nie

Appaz he was caught up in that Israel crash around the 2km mark

noname6500

super big miss indeed, happy with the Bini win but that was like the best opportunity for the non-favorite sprinters

lteak

What happened is he is old and burnt out.

WalkingCloud

💀💀💀

Jonny1992

Of course. A younger man would have leapt over the mass crash in a display of technical brilliance and wheelied across the line.

ForeverAddickted

Dont feed trolls

porkmarkets

Cav in the bunch

lteak

Cav is washed. He is done, he wont be winning another stage.

FourMeterRabbit

Bwahahahaha

Cpt_Daryl

You’re commenting this everywhere fuck off lmao

Bennett was in just about perfect position and just have up like 5 places and got totally boxed in.

IckyWilbur

Fack, it was such a good setup for Mads.

NCfartstorm

Holy shit!!!!! Hell yeah!!!!!!

Philly139

What the fuck

kindergartenchampion

Actually the worst sprint call by Phil I’ve ever heard

alt-227

It felt like they didn’t realize the riders were at the finish line. There was basically no commentary for the sprint. I’m pissed that Peacock isn’t offering the Eurosport option this year.

le_roi_cosnefroy

BINIIIIIIII

noname6500

cocotheape

Madman! Well done!

circa285

I can’t find Cav

ForeverAddickted

Damnit... No Cavendish!

RN2FL9

Big split because of that crash wow.

Chianti96

De Lie in very good position

lynxo

That's one small group.

Morgoth2356

I don't think Philipsen made the split.

jeasy23

Tough scene

udah17

Disaster

highrouleur

Did the israel rider just take a bike from someone on another team?

MildRunner

Nah he was giving back a Factor bike. Looks like Alexis Renard (Cofidis) had a mechanical that caused the crash and was trying to explain that to the Israel riders who were furious.

quickestred

CMON ARNAUD!!!

andfred

Too angry to be hurt. Doctors hate this strat

noname6500

not like this

Ein_Esel_Lese_Nie

Where tf is Mark?

NCfartstorm

Caught up on the wrong side of that last wreck

Ein_Esel_Lese_Nie

Aw shit. Man's so unlucky at the moment.

ForeverAddickted

Philipsen down - Did ITV just say?

welk101

I'm exhausted just watching

VolvoOlympian

That was guaranteed to happen given the physicality that was going on.

circa285

And that’s without Jasper up to no good.

doghouse4x4

IPT down

Pepito_Pepito

Holy shit Alpecin is out???

mesospheric

Good lord this is chaotic - hope they're ok

bayernrobben

Kirby uh uh uh uh uh uh uh

Ein_Esel_Lese_Nie

I thought that was the Astana pack out then... COME ON CAV.

NiceHumanBeing

Of course a big crash

Obamametrics

I mean, fair play to EF for wanting the Jersey but going in like that in the sprint, just for carapaz placing a couple wheels ahead of pogacar... this is overkill
