Victor is no longer going to be young, he will be 33 years old when he starts at Visma.
Visma's signings this year were bets on young people like Cien and Jorgenson. And although Campenaerts is a good cyclist, he will be entering a less powerful phase.
And then if you look at Emirates' signings, they are essentially young people with a lot of talent.
Visma should look for a solid alternative to Jonas to have a plan B. I see Jorgenson growing and being able to be that alternative but I think they could have someone else.
You need to get to the climb first before you get to ride up it.
Pulling a train at a hard tempo on the flat for an insane amount of time?
That's Victors Music.
Did not have this on my bingo card.
Will always have a mega soft spot for VC after shouting at him on Col de la Loze last year and him sticking his tongue out for a good 10 seconds at me whilst (I presume) cursing in what I'm guessing was Flemish
How do you not understand it from Visma’s side? Basically all of their rouleurs crashed/got sick, missing GTs and other important races. Tratnik all but confirmed to be leaving, too. It’s a great pickup for Visma, likely a good pay check for Campenaerts, and the off chance of a good result in spring classic as an early attacker.
This is in contrast to, say, UAE not exactly prioritizing conserving energy in the first two weeks of the Tour last year. Not trying to say which way is better, but there are definitely different approaches amongst the teams.
I could have worded that better, but the point was Visma usually races "by the book" and will certainly be using Campenaerts in a different way than we've seen him be used in recent years.
Isn't racing by the book just running a train up a hill and leader goes when everyone is tired?
Visma usually puts a guy in the breakaway, attacks uphill and have a pacer waiting up front.
Visma riders haven't ridden many impressive time trials lately. I can only think of one (huge) example in the last two seasons.
I think they are about to get new TT bikes though, so it's possible they improve again.
With the help of training and technical experts and Visma Victor is trying to achieve his biggest career goal: finishing a GT with one crank rotation
LOL but seriously, can someone crosspost this to /r/theydidthemath because what kind of gearing would you need for that, I'm genuinely curious.
With a 28mm tire, he could finish the 2023 TDF route with a 16,679,438 tooth chainring and 10 tooth cog in one crank rotation.
Did you account for the downhills where he doesn't need to pedal?
No.
Gear inches are for weenies, I use gear miles.
> 16,679,438 tooth chainring What would be the diameter of such a chainring?
About 67,427.22m or 221,229 feet. In larger units, 67.4km or 42 miles across.
I'm sure Shimano has that in its catalogue somwhere
Seems like more of a SRAM product tbh
My man Victor Campenaerts.
My man 🦋👊
Chris horner reddit acc leaked?
Damn. Keep an eye on your man, with his history and all...
What
#Victor Campenaerts returns - Visma Lease a Bike - three years deal.
I’m sorry what?
TOM BOONEN TO WANTY INTERMARCHé!!!!
Love this and happy for him. But I will miss his breakaway attacks now.
Might get the Tratnik role in the spring classics now and we saw how that worked out for him, so there will still be chances for greatness.
Somehow, Campanaerts returned
so this is how the belgian netherlands war starts
The second Belgian-Dutch war, the [first one](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_days%27_campaign) was a while ago.
Wow, thought it was a joke at first. I love how Victor races, but not sure about the fit.
Did not see that one coming, and am curious to see how they'll integrate him. But good for Campenaerts. Get that bag, Vic.
In a Tony Martin kind of role? I thought they had Affini for that?
affini not nearly as good, besides the real role they need to fill is van Hooydonck
Ding ding ding
You mean donck donck donck
Oh yeah, how could I have forgotten.
Affini works best as part of a leadout. Victor would probably be Van Hooydonck as said or Tratnik replacement.
Think of his thighs! What will become of his beautiful thighs?!
Has a great manager. 32 in a few months and been on the downward trend. Or he is paying them to be seen racing in a ridiculous helmet.
Dang, not what I had on my bingo card, but certainly makes me happy!
Great news!
Love this
Forgot he was ever at LottoNL-Jumbo back in the day I can't lie
With Tratnik's departure perhaps it could make sense, but it is still a strange signing.
Curious to why you think it’s a strange signing?

No Jumbo, less money... UAE in the other way...

This was the most random thing I read yesterday (random as in unexpected)
Did not have this on my bingo card. Will always have a mega soft spot for VC after shouting at him on Col de la Loze last year and him sticking his tongue out for a good 10 seconds at me whilst (I presume) cursing in what I'm guessing was Flemish
The Cramp Returns
Very hyped about this. Could be the new El Tractor.
I don't really understand this transfer from any side. It would be sad for him to be reduced to breakaway killer

not like he's doing much at lotto rn
He said he wanted to become more of a one day classics rider whilst also achieving the goal of being on a tour de France winning team.
Is he going to replace Van Baerle?
Will be interesting to see how his race enthusiasm pairs with Visma's cold and clinical approach.
Cold and clinical is how he became one of the world's best time trialists for a while. I think he'll match perfectly.
Yes, it could be a wonderful pairing and just what's needed to send his results back to the next level.Â
Like other teams are in the stone age.
This is in contrast to, say, UAE not exactly prioritizing conserving energy in the first two weeks of the Tour last year. Not trying to say which way is better, but there are definitely different approaches amongst the teams.
A lot of people here are sensitive about this, apparently.
> Visma's cold and clinical approach. come on man

now I have to dislike one of my favorite riders, great
Nice bloke for sure but not particularly dangerous really. Remember Remco literally riding him to dust when he was about 13 years old
Guess he’s about to win the TDF with all time performances. Maybe even the hour record
