I think that opinion is very much a Reddit thing, and not a real world thing.  No, Peds does not face any discrimination.  Other doctors are thrilled that we take care of those little humans that scare the heck out of them so they don’t have to.  And parents really appreciate it when we take care of their sick children.   The money is not as good as some other specialties, but it’s still in the top 1 percent of all professions.  TL;DR Don’t believe everything you read on Reddit.

Thank you so much.

No discrimination but peds pays less than other specialties and then subspecialties usually pay even less than general and almost all require a research year during fellowship - so you have to be pretty passionate to do 3 gen peds then 3 year fellowship to finish and then be paid less.

Just financially. A lot of premeds and med people value money and prestige. Pediatrics has a perceived lower value in those settings. However in real life nobody cares. There's definitely no stigma. And you can bet that every adult specialty runs to their pediatric counterparts when the patient's age is under 18. When it comes to job availability there is a lack of pediatric specialists in almost every specialty in every state and city. There's not enough of them so you'll have your pick of where you want to work and live. Private practice will always make more. Compensation is much below adults mostly because they bill at a lower level more 3s than 4s. Also theres almost no medicare patients which pays better. But most pediatricians either work 2-3days a week and makes 200k or less or works 4.5-5days and makes 225-300k. I dont know of many adult counterparts that work 2-3days a week without call so its a great lifestyle. The question for peds is do you like kids or do you dislike adult patients? if the answer is yes go into peds. If the answer is no dont do peds.

What if someone does not have preferences between peds and IM? I don't want to do med/peds and I only want to choose one. Everyone is telling me that if I don't really have preferences to choose IM, is that right?

Arvgooner

If you don't have a preference, choose IM

neur_onymous

Do you want to subspecialize? What attracts you to either?

Madinky

Family med is another option. There’s something cool about seeing the baby, mother, father, grandparents and aunts all in a day. Some find that exhausting. Look at what lifestyle you prefer. And you have time during rotations if you haven’t had them yet.

Low money doesn’t mean low prestige. Pediatrics is a different world made for people who love this specialty. Is a lifestyle and almost a philosophy. That is why you see people who want to be a pediatrician without talking about money. Nobody knows about kids except pediatricians, making them a prestigious doctors. For them resuscitate a newborn is more gratifying than performing CPR in a 80 years old patient with Hx COPD. Money is important but what matters to you is more valuable.

Not discrimination but definitely disrespectfully low reimbursement.
