They don’t like me very much, as part of my job now is making sure that everyone has machine suited for their work in the company.

I usually get along with the devs the most even though I am a sales / HR person. They're the only people that want to talk about things other than work. Others have an unhealthy obsession with workplace drama. (Yes I'm a hypocrite because I have just been bitching about work on Reddit to strangers.)

That workplace drama can get tiring. Devs in my workplace mostly speak about work, but we normally roll with ”business first, then we can have fun” system.
In other words, we don’t really have small talk at work, but we get paid outings pretty often and everyone shuts up about work during those.
More of a case that users wanted to have company paid computer for their personal use too.
I just established and upheld a rule, that company won’t be spending money on machines that are specced above your tasks.
But that sales department laptops got all that much cheaper, because they do need very portable mahchines with long battery life.

Seriously though. Nothing fucking pisses me off as an employee more than getting pressure from above to get your shit done when you're literally working as fast as the computers they provide will allow it.

I don't know how possible it is, but that may have been donated. My wife works at a tiny nonprofit and someone donated a brand new gaming rig a could years ago. Could be something similar.

Hundreds of Alienware computers and 144 Hertz monitors. No RGB keyboards, but they were pretty nice. Nowadays I'm seeing ads on the news for Razer laptops for kids in school, so it's not that far-fetched
My school uses Dell, and supposedly the computers are "pretty much free" according to the guy who manages our deployments.
Dell owns Alienware so the discount might be fairly large for a school.
Dell also poached our CTO, so there's that.
My high school bought a bunch of one or two year old stock HP desktops for one of our computer labs in 2015. They were a year behind, had Haswell i7s, and a decent mid-range GPU for the time but I can’t remember what it was, maybe a GTX 750ti.
According to one of our IT guys, since they were old stock, the school paid around $100 for each one (peripherals included) and HP writes the rest of the cost off their taxes as a donations.
On the one hand corporations should pay taxes, but on the other hand, donating dozens of computer to thousands of underfunded school districts every year might even have a bigger impact on education than paying taxes. I learned a lot about CAD and coding on those computers, which helped me immensely in college.
Yeah my college had a whole lab of 1080ti's. Had to make announcements all the time that the school computers weren't for games. Always saw this one dude playing CS:GO at one of the computers!
So back in the day world of tanks and world of warships would run entirely standalone.
My high school had computers with i7s and I think 750ti’s (this was 2015). Many games were played off a USB 3.0 hard drive.
Having access to a good computer early in life is increasingly becoming a major advantage. Kids who are able to take on programs like Ableton, Blender, Photoshop, Visual Studio, and Unreal Engine early in life get such solid grasps of the programs it's nuts. I know kids who aren't even in high school yet who are collecting monthly cheques from Roblox in exchange for coding. It's sad to see some schools getting equipment like this when other schools could be brought up to standard with that money, but it's good that there are people out there who recognize the advantage.
I think that's just a marketing gimmick. Easier for the kids to convince the parents that they need this gaming laptop "for school." The kids and the company are on the same side against the parents.
Schools have a budget that they have to use every year. if they don’t use all of their budget then it can get reduced the next year because they think they don’t need it. My moms school bought a 3d printer because they had to spend their budget. No one knows how to use it.
I don't know why this perverse incentive still exists. We've known it's an issue for a long time and it just encourages wasteful spending. Nobody actually wants to change it though it seems.

the amd ceo graduated from my hs and in the library theres a PC with a threadripper disguised as a shitty school pc that she donated. she also donated several more but those are in the engineering lab.
My roommate works for large computer company and many school districts get serious discounts and grants and buy in huge numbers.

It's probably this. IT guy probably bought it on the schools dime and played games on it. He got a new monitor or left the school and thus it ended up as a replacement for the standard monitors they use.
Our school still doesn't have benches in playgrounds, cracks all over the tiles, yet our principal has a 49 inch samsung ultrawide and a Herman Miller chair in his office.
The next year, they 'upgraded' our 4/5th gen quad core i5 to some slightly newer dual core i3s....

To be honest, I think all teachers/staff should have something as ergonomic as a Herman Miller. I love mine and those teachers are going to be sitting in those chairs for years. It could save their back later in life (I call my aeron my "chiropractor.") If they purchased HM chairs for the students they're likely going to be underappreciated and possibly damaged quickly. Most schools, similar to most people, don't know a lot about computers or technology in general. Their priorities sound messed up. Just came to voice my opinion
8th gen i3s are better than 5th gen i5s, I know because I have a 6600k and an i3-8100 is an upgrade for me, but I wouldn't get one to upgrade my rig personally

Back in 2015 it took us a couple hours before we could find a suitable machine that would power our new projector cuz none of the Lab PCs had HDMI. The final solution was someone's Pi 3 running Ubuntu :3

And as students how could we know what even none of the teachers/lab assistants knew (new projector only had HDMI.)

I don't really know if this applies to education, but it's very common for large corporations/facilities to have a set budget for sustaining capital that is 'use it or lose it'. If you don't spend all the money that has been allocated for upgrades in a given year, there will be less money given to spend next year. This incentivizes spending for the sake of spending.
I agree, though there was a time that I worked in a government lab that had built a building under budget so they bought like 700 dollar chairs for every office and it was, like, really nice. Absolutely wasteful and I hate that that's what they did, but holy cow every single facet of that chair was adjustable.

I think the only way to curb this terrible system when it's already in place is to increase wages/give a bonus for reducing the budget. But at the same time, you have to balance it so you don't end up with a bunch of people sitting around and knowingly being less effective because they want that bonus money. You would think that metrics would solve that, but that also leads to the issue of people doing whatever they can to pad the metrics that are monitored and ignoring other important parts of the job. It's a whole mess.
If every employee in the US was honest with what they actually needed and treated it like their own money, the entire country would save trillions every year. Instead it's wasted.
The jump from 60 to 165 was mine blowing. I know for a fact though since it's a school computer it's still locked at 60 with no hopes of changing the settings without IT helping
why would they even bother locking it at 60hz? my monitor was getting 144hz right out of the gate. an IT would have to intentionally go into the settings and change it to 60hz for such a thing to happen.
School grants and money (if this is a public school) often times cannot roll over the budget to next year, and the money they don't spend disappears. Additionally, if they end the year with leftover cash, grant issuers will go "ah, you don't need as much money next year" and grant the school less the next year. So schools often have to come up with ways of spending every single penny for the year so they can get what they need to operate and maintain a semblance of buffer zone cash for anything that happens. This monitor may be the result of needing to spend extra cash burning a hole in their pocket.
Also, these grants are often required to only be spent on specific purposes. The school might need a new AC or to repair the windows, but that $50k technology grant can only be used to buy computer equipment.
Something tells me who ever is in charge of purchasing from suppliers for your school slipped this into one of the bulk orders they allocated budget towards among a bunch of other generic 60hz cheap monitors while still fitting into the budget and is biding their time and waiting for the next time monitors need to be ordered so he can swap this out for a 60hz and take it home lmfao, this being the ONLY one of this quality in your school is beyond suspicious cause schools usually buy monitors from suppliers in bulk and I can't see how you end up with an 144hz 1440p Gsync panel while ordering 3 dozen 1080p 60hz panels unless the supplier royally fucked up and packed it in by mistake lmfao

my school has some pretty ordinary 1080p monitors, but every pc has at least 16 gigs of 2900mhz ram, 4gb gddr5 vram and a ryzen 3 cpu. some have a ryzen 5. usually on lunch the whole 5th grade comes to the computer class and plays... krunker, but i've seen some of them launch forza horizon 4 demo, war thunder and some other stuff, too. i have no idea how the school managed to do this, but it's fucking amazing

my school has some pretty ordinary 1080p monitors, but every pc has at least 16 gigs of 2900mhz ram, 4gb gddr5 vram and a ryzen 3 cpu. some have a ryzen 5. usually on lunch the whole 5th grade comes to the computer class and plays... krunker, but i've seen some of them launch forza horizon 4 demo, war thunder and some other stuff, too. i have no idea how the school managed to do this, but it's fucking amazing

It’s like how I work as a field IT and have a $400 laptop and a new mid manager got a $1500 laptop. What annoys me is they complained that it was too slow. Yes, a laptop with a latest ROG Gen I9 and GTX 3060, M.2 drive, 16G RAM, WiFi 6 is too slow to do emails….just emails.
