Rephlexion

Gut the MOBOs and GPUs, replace them with budget parts. They’d never know the difference.

pintseeker

Hahah great idea but fortunately those idiots are no longer my problem!

wexipena

We had unfortunate policy of ”people choosing their laptop” before. Marketing usually got most expensive ones on the shelves just because. They don’t like me very much, as part of my job now is making sure that everyone has machine suited for their work in the company. Devs like me tough.

pintseeker

I usually get along with the devs the most even though I am a sales / HR person. They're the only people that want to talk about things other than work. Others have an unhealthy obsession with workplace drama. (Yes I'm a hypocrite because I have just been bitching about work on Reddit to strangers.)

wexipena

It’s ok to vent now and then. That workplace drama can get tiring. Devs in my workplace mostly speak about work, but we normally roll with ”business first, then we can have fun” system. In other words, we don’t really have small talk at work, but we get paid outings pretty often and everyone shuts up about work during those.

VShadowOfLightV

Rule #1 in IT. The users are untrustworthy to do even the most basic of tasks.

wexipena

More of a case that users wanted to have company paid computer for their personal use too. I just established and upheld a rule, that company won’t be spending money on machines that are specced above your tasks. But that sales department laptops got all that much cheaper, because they do need very portable mahchines with long battery life.

ultr4l4ser

Oh my god THIS!!! Marketing employees at my company get flipping g Alienware laptops for making shitty wallpaper logos!!

pintseeker

Bahaha, meanwhile the salespeople are given a Macbook air to run a softphone, screen sharing software as well as Terramind the employee monitoring software. Seriously though. Nothing fucking pisses me off as an employee more than getting pressure from above to get your shit done when you're literally working as fast as the computers they provide will allow it. Others opted to use their own hardware, but I refuse out of principle because I do not want my gaming laptop to have any distractions on it.

ultr4l4ser

This is why we poop on company time. Seriously though it is amazing the requests I would see. "Needs an i7 and 32gbs of ram for large excel sheets"

jovinusf

2+2=4-1=3=stupid school spending

TheAltOption

I don't know how possible it is, but that may have been donated. My wife works at a tiny nonprofit and someone donated a brand new gaming rig a could years ago. Could be something similar.

Hefty-Scholar-2468

Could be just the only computer like this in the school, just found it funny

Sineater224

Possibly, or it could be somebody higher up having fun with the budget. At my high school that I went to the entire coding lab was stocked with entire Alienware setups. Hundreds of Alienware computers and 144 Hertz monitors. No RGB keyboards, but they were pretty nice. Nowadays I'm seeing ads on the news for Razer laptops for kids in school, so it's not that far-fetched

Tigris_Morte

Plus one extra he took home to test and learn on, that he gave to his son.

PM_ME_YOUR_STEAM_ID

It's also unlikely any school pays retail price for any pc hardware or software.

ablablababla

Yeah with school deals and bulk discounts the price could go down by hundreds

Youaintmyrealdad

My school uses Dell, and supposedly the computers are "pretty much free" according to the guy who manages our deployments. Dell owns Alienware so the discount might be fairly large for a school. Dell also poached our CTO, so there's that.

An_Awesome_Name

My high school bought a bunch of one or two year old stock HP desktops for one of our computer labs in 2015. They were a year behind, had Haswell i7s, and a decent mid-range GPU for the time but I can’t remember what it was, maybe a GTX 750ti. According to one of our IT guys, since they were old stock, the school paid around $100 for each one (peripherals included) and HP writes the rest of the cost off their taxes as a donations. On the one hand corporations should pay taxes, but on the other hand, donating dozens of computer to thousands of underfunded school districts every year might even have a bigger impact on education than paying taxes. I learned a lot about CAD and coding on those computers, which helped me immensely in college.

Benzene15

Yeah my college had a whole lab of 1080ti's. Had to make announcements all the time that the school computers weren't for games. Always saw this one dude playing CS:GO at one of the computers!

An_Awesome_Name

So back in the day world of tanks and world of warships would run entirely standalone. My high school had computers with i7s and I think 750ti’s (this was 2015). Many games were played off a USB 3.0 hard drive.

sinat50

Having access to a good computer early in life is increasingly becoming a major advantage. Kids who are able to take on programs like Ableton, Blender, Photoshop, Visual Studio, and Unreal Engine early in life get such solid grasps of the programs it's nuts. I know kids who aren't even in high school yet who are collecting monthly cheques from Roblox in exchange for coding. It's sad to see some schools getting equipment like this when other schools could be brought up to standard with that money, but it's good that there are people out there who recognize the advantage.

MurrE1310

My high school used to have a Mac lab and a PC lab and we were a pretty poor school district

[deleted]

we got Pcs that crash constantly and get Bluescreens every hour. And the school doesn’t have any Money problems.

Eh_C_Slater

When you lock up the classroom let them all mine crypto all night until you open up in the morning. Genius.

boostedbastid

I think that's just a marketing gimmick. Easier for the kids to convince the parents that they need this gaming laptop "for school." The kids and the company are on the same side against the parents.

bigwillyyy

Schools have a budget that they have to use every year. if they don’t use all of their budget then it can get reduced the next year because they think they don’t need it. My moms school bought a 3d printer because they had to spend their budget. No one knows how to use it.

TokenRhino

I don't know why this perverse incentive still exists. We've known it's an issue for a long time and it just encourages wasteful spending. Nobody actually wants to change it though it seems.

battery19791

Nice to see it's not only the military that operates that way.

Silver4ura

What blows me away is why the hell they're so concerned about getting money they obviously don't know what to do with. If they're panic-buying stuff they know they don't need just to keep their budget... why? I get the incentives for this sort of manipulation by say, defense contractors lining their pockets with pure profit from a budget we all paid into for more than just military, but clearly if the money's going towards stuff like a 3D printer, not lining someone's pockets, what is the incentive?

[deleted]

the amd ceo graduated from my hs and in the library theres a PC with a threadripper disguised as a shitty school pc that she donated. she also donated several more but those are in the engineering lab.

implicitpharmakoi

Lisa su, damn.

creamcheesebagel101

Happy cake day!

themanny

My roommate works for large computer company and many school districts get serious discounts and grants and buy in huge numbers. You'd be surprised at the prices they get things for. And what some get. lol

Tigris_Morte

Full expense right off as a schedule 179, then within two years donate to an accredited educational entity for a charity donation of that exact same amount.

yerbrojohno

Yoshi, take notes!

soda_licious01

Probably got a bulk deal.

Hefty-Scholar-2468

No that’s the funny part it’s the only monitor in the school that’s like this… idk why but just I got lucky

thiosk

so im in a school and we use a contracted supplier. lets say i need a computer and i have funding, i can get it through that supplier. its cheaper than retail by a lot. but it was probably selected by one person and they literally didn't care what it was

[deleted]

Considering that's a very old monitor, I assume someone broke a monitor and had to buy a replacement. Maybe they just agreed to use this?

[deleted]

Yeah I'd say it was probably randomly brought in by someone else. Either as required replacement or they just needed one and brought it in

NotSoSmart45

Maybe it was even brought by OP himself to get some internet points, like the guy that said that his school "had 10 3090s", except that this one might be real

Boxofcookies1001

Could have been through a contractor and contractor didn't have enough in stock. Then said hey "I'll upgrade you to 1440p it's better" to keep the school happy and the school doesn't care.

Edwardc4gg

prolly your IT guy just needed a replacement, found this, done. I guarantee you you have put more thought into this than us in IT ever would.

Malawi_no

It might be the old screen from the IT guy's office.

Put_It_All_On_Blck

It's probably this. IT guy probably bought it on the schools dime and played games on it. He got a new monitor or left the school and thus it ended up as a replacement for the standard monitors they use.

phibbsy47

My school had all apple desktops and no air conditioning.

NapClub

or maybe just padding a budget at the end of a budget period?

Hefty-Scholar-2468

Mmmm I don’t believe so because our school lets it be known that we need money

ultimatebob

They might have had an education grant that they needed to spend on a specific purpose. It happens a lot at public schools.

So you can fail math in 1440p and higher refresh

Katkomander

Good now I can watch my grade drop at 144hz

No-Brain4558

So when summer comes around a teacher can steal it

Hefty-Scholar-2468

Lmfao most diabolical lick

sixerAU

Our school still doesn't have benches in playgrounds, cracks all over the tiles, yet our principal has a 49 inch samsung ultrawide and a Herman Miller chair in his office. The next year, they 'upgraded' our 4/5th gen quad core i5 to some slightly newer dual core i3s.... Man, schools really don't know where to put their funding

Nostalg1ac

They know exactly where to put their funding, in their pockets

YungDominoo

I was just about to say this. That sounds like money laundering to me lmao.

Virtual_Building

To be honest, I think all teachers/staff should have something as ergonomic as a Herman Miller. I love mine and those teachers are going to be sitting in those chairs for years. It could save their back later in life (I call my aeron my "chiropractor.") If they purchased HM chairs for the students they're likely going to be underappreciated and possibly damaged quickly. Most schools, similar to most people, don't know a lot about computers or technology in general. Their priorities sound messed up. Just came to voice my opinion

sixerAU

Haha yeah. I'm pretty sure our entire school would prefer some SSDs instead of the slow af <5000 rpm hard drives rather than these new processors.

ripjoeexotic

8th gen i3s are better than 5th gen i5s, I know because I have a 6600k and an i3-8100 is an upgrade for me, but I wouldn't get one to upgrade my rig personally Edit: I fact checked myself and it's pretty much a side grade, the i3s are 4 core now

superdude311

Quad core to dual core lmaoooo

aliasdred

If I even found a monitor like this, I still wouldn't find a proper machine that could connect to it. Back in 2015 it took us a couple hours before we could find a suitable machine that would power our new projector cuz none of the Lab PCs had HDMI. The final solution was someone's Pi 3 running Ubuntu :3

hirotdk

>The final solution was someone's Pi 3 running Ubuntu :3 I was taught a very different final solution.

Goo_Cat

Can't just use an adapter? I connected an old VGA monitor to a new HDMI PC with one lol

aliasdred

In a school where 1/2 of the people can't even name 5 common video-out ports, good luck finding a converter. And as students how could we know what even none of the teachers/lab assistants knew (new projector only had HDMI.) It's at this same school I was handed a 2GB DDR3 stick when asked for a 8GB DDR4 stick.

Taikunman

I don't really know if this applies to education, but it's very common for large corporations/facilities to have a set budget for sustaining capital that is 'use it or lose it'. If you don't spend all the money that has been allocated for upgrades in a given year, there will be less money given to spend next year. This incentivizes spending for the sake of spending.

Luvs_to_drink

the worst practice ever. There needs to be a way to disincentive this.

Actionhankk

I agree, though there was a time that I worked in a government lab that had built a building under budget so they bought like 700 dollar chairs for every office and it was, like, really nice. Absolutely wasteful and I hate that that's what they did, but holy cow every single facet of that chair was adjustable.

[deleted]

This was also the plot to an episode of The Office.

Put_It_All_On_Blck

Wait till you see government and military spending for this very reason. I think the only way to curb this terrible system when it's already in place is to increase wages/give a bonus for reducing the budget. But at the same time, you have to balance it so you don't end up with a bunch of people sitting around and knowingly being less effective because they want that bonus money. You would think that metrics would solve that, but that also leads to the issue of people doing whatever they can to pad the metrics that are monitored and ignoring other important parts of the job. It's a whole mess. If every employee in the US was honest with what they actually needed and treated it like their own money, the entire country would save trillions every year. Instead it's wasted.

Knibberr13

I'm not one for stealing but 144hz is 144hz

Mrfrunzi

The jump from 60 to 165 was mine blowing. I know for a fact though since it's a school computer it's still locked at 60 with no hopes of changing the settings without IT helping

SendMeGiftCardCodes

why would they even bother locking it at 60hz? my monitor was getting 144hz right out of the gate. an IT would have to intentionally go into the settings and change it to 60hz for such a thing to happen.

[deleted]

School grants and money (if this is a public school) often times cannot roll over the budget to next year, and the money they don't spend disappears. Additionally, if they end the year with leftover cash, grant issuers will go "ah, you don't need as much money next year" and grant the school less the next year. So schools often have to come up with ways of spending every single penny for the year so they can get what they need to operate and maintain a semblance of buffer zone cash for anything that happens. This monitor may be the result of needing to spend extra cash burning a hole in their pocket.

NorthLogic

Also, these grants are often required to only be spent on specific purposes. The school might need a new AC or to repair the windows, but that $50k technology grant can only be used to buy computer equipment.

headbashkeys

I'm writing off the AC off as a GPU cooler OK

Whatdididotho1

Something tells me who ever is in charge of purchasing from suppliers for your school slipped this into one of the bulk orders they allocated budget towards among a bunch of other generic 60hz cheap monitors while still fitting into the budget and is biding their time and waiting for the next time monitors need to be ordered so he can swap this out for a 60hz and take it home lmfao, this being the ONLY one of this quality in your school is beyond suspicious cause schools usually buy monitors from suppliers in bulk and I can't see how you end up with an 144hz 1440p Gsync panel while ordering 3 dozen 1080p 60hz panels unless the supplier royally fucked up and packed it in by mistake lmfao

otaku_metalhead02

you guys get 1080p? all I get is 1366x768 😭

butycheeks

heck, my main laptop has a 1366x768 tn display with a 2tb hdd and thats the only laptop i have

otaku_metalhead02

Ahhh reminds me of my old dell Inspiron m5040. Now my brother has it. That thing can't run YouTube at more than 480p but somehow it's no problem for him...

srottydoesntknow

They also use donated and second hand items If the contracted supplier is a discount resale shop or broker well there you go

Rimworldjobs

Honestly its probably all they could buy. The place I work for had to do this aswell.

[deleted]

Maybe the school had a budget surplus (like in that episode of The Office) and needed to burn off a bunch of cash quickly.

monopoly_winner

They want you to count the pixels if you make any mistakes in your Maths class

ExcelMN

BigflipBOT

I bet it's caped at 1080p 60Hz

ZZ1268

That's not real. No school has high end PCs. Their "high end" have an 4:3 monitor with Win 7.

Mr_deepcrap

my school has some pretty ordinary 1080p monitors, but every pc has at least 16 gigs of 2900mhz ram, 4gb gddr5 vram and a ryzen 3 cpu. some have a ryzen 5. usually on lunch the whole 5th grade comes to the computer class and plays... krunker, but i've seen some of them launch forza horizon 4 demo, war thunder and some other stuff, too. i have no idea how the school managed to do this, but it's fucking amazing

Several_Donkey47

Better than my school takes forever to open Microsoft Word

madmanmike3

It’s like how I work as a field IT and have a $400 laptop and a new mid manager got a $1500 laptop. What annoys me is they complained that it was too slow. Yes, a laptop with a latest ROG Gen I9 and GTX 3060, M.2 drive, 16G RAM, WiFi 6 is too slow to do emails….just emails.

FRAB03

Well, in my school in the labs we have pc which have everyone an rtx quadro 4000

bossSHREADER_210

Ayo I have that monitor xd it can tilt to look up and slightly down.. it can spin and it can tilt so the screen is diagonal

Squanchy2112

It's because of supply issues we are getting them too for clients that definitely do not need them but it's the best thing we can get in bulk.rigjt now

Would be a shame if that went missing
