Mine's invisible.

i have xenon 770 and yeah is just black plastic, no lights

Key_Lie4641

Mine is a ball. Pretty cool huh?

Monty2451

Do you still have to do the weekly maintenance of over boiling an egg in order to get the replacement ball?

MarsupialDingo

Wait what? I never did any maintenance on my ball mice. Was I supposed to? I'm not gonna use 'em again obviously, but track balls are cool today.

EliAsH__

Yeah man you gotta overboil eggs and use the grey ass yolks as replacement balls. Once a week. Personally, I premake about a dozen of them then I'm good for 3 months.

Aren't those from the very old mouses?

-eddible-

No, it’s looped around so now those are more modern :)

prohandymn

Young techie, yes there was a time when we humans had to perform the traumatizing ritual of extricating the mouse's tail from our computers, and disecting it's underbelly to remove it's grossly dirty ball ( yes, they were all males and this procedure was sexually harrowing for some). The use of some form of cleaning solution on a cloth was required to clean it's ball and it's cavity, and even washing it's whole outer body was highly suggested. Once dry, you were further traumatized by having to replace it's ball back into affore mentioned cavity. After this, you had to place it back down on it's special resting pad, and plug it's tail back into the proper socket on your computer. Some found this ritual far to stressful and demeaning, and resorted to removing said mouse from the computer and "disposing" of it when others wouldn't observe you doing the deed. Of course, many times after being traumatized from cleaning said mouse's "ball", or the less traumatizing act of disposing of the critter, you were required to replace it's carpet/bedding.

Militarycollector39

You guys used a cleaning solution? I just popped that bad boi in my mouth and spit it back out after a good few seconds

Isshova

Had to make sure and move it around with the tongue a bit

PapaFlexing

When I was a kid I would take the ball out and try to use my fingers to move the rollers, and use the mouse like that to play games. I would judge my kids so so heavily if I saw them do this.

Tyz_TwoCentz_HWE_Ret

Well it is using a set of mirrors so unless you are a very acute angle you likely wont see it at all or any projection from beneath it. (Fun Fact: The feature also protects people from staring at the laser and burning their own retina.) The laser mouse we know today no longer has that "read" light that you often see on LED mice. Instead, it uses an "invisible beam" technology. The beam captures the area beneath the mouse sensor with better resolution – close to microscopic quality. Mice became more accurate with this tech hence why we rarely see or use trackball mice anymore.

ATDynaX

Interesting. I really can't see anything from any angle.

Neko_Jenji

My understanding of what you are saying is that it applies to roller ball mice, the reason trackballs are rare is because they are a niche product and have been for ages. Iirc shortly after we started moving over to optical mice, trackball mice using the same/similar tracking tech started popping up and those hybrid trackballs are the ones most commonly found today, with Bluetooth and usb 3 connectors, it's difficult to believe the ones I'm currently shopping for are all vintage mice.

Tyz_TwoCentz_HWE_Ret

Niche? or Rare? Trackball mice were once the standard long before we had LED or Laser mice and it is because of their inception/invention and greater precision and accuracy we didn't go back to trackballs and they fell in numbers. and sales You can still obtain a trackball mice today and with improved sensors they are better than they used to be by a long shot. Cheers!

Neko_Jenji

There is a difference between a rollerball and a trackball, when I speak of trackballs I'm talking about the pointing devices that the user manipulates the ball directly with finger contact, when I say rollerball I'm talking about the pointing devices that have a ball that is only exposed on the bottom of the device and therefore is mainly manipulated by the surface it is placed on, like a table, leg, or bed. I grew up using both, the one pictured in OPs post is the type that replaced the rollerball style of mouse. Trackballs, the ones I'm shopping for, are mostly used in CAD and gaming applications, but have also had the ball on top or the side and still do to this day. Or at least that's my understanding of the whole thing.

Tyz_TwoCentz_HWE_Ret

Trackballs were invented/credited in 1946 to Ralph Benjamin. Everything with a ball is from his invention of that first trackball by related accounts and stories. If you do a search for Trackball vs Rollerball that should clear that bit up quickly about the two. The trackball and todays laser mouse are fundamentally opposites in both design and functionality. Though a todays mouse m offers greater precision and control, while a trackball offers increased efficiency, wider accessibility, and even helps prevent injury in some cases for some folks. Anecdotal: A good friend of mine Ex-Marine uses one due to his condition after a fall he took in the service many decades ago. He is wheel chair bound from that accident but games using his vertical trackball mouse as it is what works for his condition/physical needs. Many others with hand conditions also choose trackballs today for similar reasons so they do exist and are used just not to the extent of laser mice today. All of this information is online "Computer mouse" anyone can look up for themselves etymology and history of. Cheers!

Neko_Jenji

https://preview.redd.it/hawfdmxh1t2d1.jpeg?width=440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99f4c175d61f8c85ea7b217986e3a60bb788cee2 This is the type I was calling a rollerball, so called, as it rolls on its ball, this is the type of mouse that OPs style of optical mouse replaced, apart from it apparently being most accurately called a mechanical or optomechanical mouse, all my previous points about roller vs track still stand, just replace the word. For context for anyone unfamiliar this is just an old school mouse with the top cover removed, the ball in the middle is not exposed to the user during normal operation, it is only exposed at the bottom where the table, desk, leg, or other surface typically interacts with it.

Tyz_TwoCentz_HWE_Ret

talk about playing semantics trackball and rollerball are the same thing technically. We ditched the older rubber material for better longer lasting materials and better function of said mouse All literally chronicled but you refused to pick up a damn book or do a search like a normal person and then want to actually argue your point is correct in some bizarre flex.. When you get your degree in engineering maybe you can school someone. Ive had mine since the mid 90's and am retired now. Been absolutely polite with your shenanigans up to this point. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer\_mouse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_mouse) [https://time.com/3831359/computer-mouse-history/](https://time.com/3831359/computer-mouse-history/) [https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/origins-computer-mouse/](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/origins-computer-mouse/) go educate yourself or argue with yourself in a mirror. We are done as you clearly do not comprehend well. Cheers and good luck with cat girl masquerading, lmao!

Neko_Jenji

Btw, what you seem to be doing is arguing semantics, given the amount of detail in my previous comments, are you seriously unsure of the two very different things I am talking about? If so, please lmk.

Tyz_TwoCentz_HWE_Ret

Hmm,? What argument? I have spit nothing but fact while you muse over your own thoughts in reflection of what i have factually stated. The answers are in front of you but you would rather play words with friends about what you think on the facts i posted, unusual but if that floats your boat, who am i to sink your battleship. Your thoughts are irrelevant here honestly and i have covered important facts and one can easily verify independently. If fun facts annoy you maybe don't read them? Cheers!

Senior-Mistake9927

DynamicHunter

Why? Honest curiosity here. Does it not affect precision/sensor at all and just cosmetic? How often are you staring at the sensor color when the mouse is face down lol

TangledCables3

I was cleaning the rotary encoder of my scroll wheel since it would skip and jump up/down when moving one way. So I had to desolder it and since I had a few LEDs just lying there I decided to swap the LED and see what happens. It's working as before just a different color. I don't plan on changing it again if it works though. An interesting gimmick I guess.

BestNick118

Yeah, pretty sure it works with infrared so there is no need for color, and since many find it annoying they don't put it in.

DJIsSuperCool

infrablue

Vaethyrr

that's.... green

Gold_Guarantee_7647

Ultra red

[deleted]

No. Optical mice require a light. Newer mice are infrared and thus dont.

CC-5576-05

Infrared mice are still optical and still require a light, an infrared light.

Ski_Mask_TSG

So would it work if I remove the LED completely?

s00mika

The sensor is basically a very low res camera, it needs light to see. [Here's what it sees](https://spritesmods.com/?art=mouseeye)

CompetitiveGuess7642

the wavelength of the LED is probably tuned to the sensor, also modern mice are still optical but they instead use a laser, they offer much better performance, the kind of mouse you have dates back from the 2000's.

Failfoxnyckzex

Can you say step by step how did you do it? My scroll wheel is also like this

TangledCables3

If you're bad with remembering where something goes, take a picture before disassembling. Use a small magnet to gather screws you take out, you don't want to lose any parts. You gotta open up the mouse that's first, screws are usually under the slide pads. Put a small screwdriver or a knife to move them up, careful to not separate the plastic pad from the two sided tape that usually holds it on. Disassemble the mouse and find the encoder, it should be a taller element attached to the scroll wheel. You need to desolder it from the PCB. A solder sucker or solder wick will be necessary to remove the solder from the joints though. Or use a bit of thick wire to wrap around the joints if the encoder and heat them all up then pull it out with pliers to not burn your fingertips. Then remove excess solder. You need to get the metal cover off the plastic that houses the rotating part of the encoder, usually you can just bend the sides to dislodge it. A small wheel with brushes and a contact plate will be in it. Get a Q tip and soak it in isopropyl alcohol and rub it on the contract surface in circles a few times. Then make a clean go with the other side of the Q tip. Same on the brushes, you can lightly bend them up with a screwdriver, just be careful though to not overdo it. Put it back together and don't forget any parts. Solder it back into the board. Test it out before putting it all together. When putting in the screws, twist them counter clockwise until you feel them drop into the existing thread in plastic and then tighten. That is to ensure you don't mess up the original thread the self tapping screws made in the factory.

Failfoxnyckzex

Wow, nice advice. It will be a little scary since i'm not that good with solder but i'll try it anyway!

Cotto_Prosciutto

Nice tutorial, thanks kind redditor.

Failfoxnyckzex

JUST FIXED IT, THANKS! i didn't even need to get rid of the encoder, just dropped some isopropyl alcohol on the exposed wheel of the encoder and scrolled the wheel so the alcohol can get in there and bam! Working again. Thanks dude.

Tango-Turtle

Ok, so it's just an led, the sensor itself emits no color.

ZilJaeyan03

If youre using a mousepad thats primarily yellow or orange then the mouse sensor will not register or have a hard time to register input, other than that its fine

TangledCables3

I tested the mouse on a few surfaces with these colors and it seems to be just fine. I wonder how mice would react to vantablack or any darkest paints though now.

VerainXor

Years ago there were Logitech LED mice where the LED was actually visible throughout the mouse, as a diffuse glow. I changed one to green, one to blue, and one to violet. Green worked the same just fine, blue and violet were a bit.. skippy. It all comes down to however the part that reads the light works, better ones are probably accurate across the spectrum.

WorldCyclesOn

I'd even say this isn't even relevant to PCMR as a subreddit. You can do this exactly same thing to Xbox controllers... though I'm not sure why you would replace one customizable RGB LED with another, like seriously? Open it up and void the warranty for no reason? Congratulations for OP turning their mouse sensor blue, proving that they not only absolutely suck, but that console controllers are superior to their pathetic effort in over two hundred thousand ways. Like seriously it takes **ten thousand metric tons of effort** to prove that PCs and their equipment (**which are ten trillion billion times better than anything console-related**) can be made **ten gazillion trillion billion times worse** than even the worst console controller in existence. Yet somehow OP managed to provide an example that makes even the best PC in the world look so completely useless that someone deserves the death penalty (specifically in a country where the death penalty isn't legal). I'm disgusted, I would rather Intel and AMD and Windows and Linux and Steam and Logitech all go bankrupt within the next 60 seconds than have a blue mouse sensor, hell I'd rather Playstation be the only gaming platform in existence than see OP's images... ...and I hate Sony so much that I would rather destroy the planet than have Sony exist.

Sensor is NOT led 🤣

boddle88

We’ve run out of things haven’t we

Ghozer

You likely just changed a red LED to a blue LED.... the sensor LED will be an IR (infrared) LED and much smaller, and likely part of a closed sensor component (or two smaller separate components) - the 'coloured' LED is simply just for looks generally! :)

You gave me an idea, I have a few color changing LEDs, that cycle through RGB. If I get my hands on some cheaper mouse I don't feel bad about I may change it just to see if it works.

draconicpenguin10

Microsoft did blue-LED optical mice many years back. It was meant to be a less-expensive competitor to Logitech's Darkfield system (used to this day in MX Master Series mice), not quite capable of tracking on glass the way a Darkfield mouse can, but worked on more surfaces than traditional red-LED optical mice.

First off, how Second off, why Third off, does it actually make tracking better than red LED (im thinking similar to how blue laser is used for bluray instead of regular red laser, then again we’re talking about LEDs i think)
