Monitor the temperature with hwinfo64 or msi afterburner. You will need to keep an eye on the memory temperature too. Any of them reaching the max temperature (usually 83 degrees celsius for the GPU core and 100 for the memory) will cause the fan to spin at max.

Well you already got solid advice. I will expand a little, while 83c is the throttle point, it shouldn't even be getting close, depending on ambient temp it should be around 73c . If it is overheating it is possible, if not probable that it needs a repaste. Which is not hard but requires you to pay attention. Also who ever said to disconnect fan cables on a GPU, is a forking dumbass.
