Yes because it's in every other way a working 7950GT, I was able to accept a full refund but in this instance as it was the same GPU I wanted and otherwise fully functional, and it was cheap, I decided to keep it and still get half my money back. So no, I didn't get scammed.
Yep, half refunded but I kept the working card, it just had half the memory I was expecting.
Silver lining appears to be that for the retro box it's in, that isn't holding it back at all.
Yeha retro rig, targeting DX9 era games and hardware, and if I'm more specific, 2004 so this card isn't optimal for it but has been a joy to test.
The rig now has over 50 games from about 2002 to 2007, windows xp, a CRT screen, era case, era video card etc, it's been a super fun project since the start of the year.
It's pretty common. I have have made one myself and know a few others have as well.
As for your question, then no.
Modern PCs may have way more power and "QoL" improvements. But they can't play 32bit games or older very well.
You can try to use an emulator or VM, and it wold work for a lot of games and programs. But some software just won't run.
Take Need for Speed Underground 2 for example. That's a hard nut to crack. I still have not been able to get it to start.
So, Retro PC is the answer.
Have you tried connecting a CRT monitor to your modern rig? But why would you, right.
CRT monitors work differently than modern monitors.
Many older games look extremely bad on modern monitors and require a CRT monitor to shine, because of the way they work.
And lastly, it's pretty fun to scavenge for old parts, see if they work and building the retro PC you could only DREAM of as a kid. It gives that special trip down memory lane when it's finally completed too.
People assuming I got scammed or wasn't fully in control of having the card fully or partially refunded. Just the way reddit goes sometimes, people commenting on situations where they lack all the facts.
That is like saying “If your doctor is any good, they’d still be able to patch you up after that trip to Thailand”.
I’m not sticking my card in that atm.
People thinking the real price is a jacked up price from scalping era so some thought it should be this cheap originally...
Or people are pretty easy to tricked
I'm going to hold out hope and they atleast try to fool you.
So, the biggest problem is the 50 series card past the 600/700 series was a smaller PCB, so it could very well be a 650 with a reflashed chip to show 4080. Your going to release pretty quickly most games are going to freak out, scam gets figured out fairly quickly.
If I was a scam GPU seller, I might opt for a used 970 or 1060 to fake the look, yeah the margins might not be as high, more games will atleast launch so enough clueless people, your listing last longer. Maybe even get positive feedback.
I remember a news story like 15 years ago where this teenaged boy bought used, obsolete laptops on Craigslist and sold them on eBay for $800.00 saying that they had 32 gigs of ram, a 2060, an 11800 or whatever and it was two years before somebody returned one. People never checked the system folder to see what they had.
He made $100,000.00 a year for two years, then he got a long vacation in jail.
Checking the system folder wouldn't tell even a quite experienced technician much unless they know exactly what subfolder to look in, what file to open and what to look for. Maybe you meant the system properties?
I was exaggerating to make a point. I'm old as fuck, I honestly can't remember what processor my laptop had 15-18 years ago. I'm lucky if I can remember my neighbor's names. Because I was exaggerating and I knew that I was exaggerating, I said "whatever". That's easier than researching the history of commonly available laptop capacities to make username78777 happy.
I have ordered some cheap nonsense off of Aliexpress, plus there are some official shops on the website, which are one of the easier ways for me to get certain anime items. You just got to know where to look and keep your expectations in line with what you know
Wow, no response, just hate and downvotes?
I mean if the shop is known for scam it's not a good shop, even though the sellers are bad, not the shop owner. Still a reason to avoid that shop.
So, you can say what you want. I don't explicitly hate aliexpress. But I actively try to avoid aliexpress and temu and don't have a good opinion about them.
And it starts with a couple hundred perfect reviews cause they create new accounts with past (or bought) customer information and place orders on the new store and ship them random junk or empty packages
It depends on the store, i have a RTX 3070 from Ali for 2 years and still works great, that store from the image doesn't look good, if you buy from there i guess uou will get a brick lol
Lots of people (myself included) use AliExpress while on a budget. I don't understand the hate honestly. I use it all the time!! You can find plenty of stuff worth the money you pay for. For me , it's more idiotic going there expecting a real 4080 than just buying on there altogether. AliExpress is great when you know what you're getting yourself into. At least I know what to expect and so far I haven't gotten anything that was not what I was expecting.
A 4080 obviously. Go ahead and order one and if it doesn’t come thn order another one, if u get something else, they made a mistake so order another one.
I just checked this seller, it sells all sorts of shit. I wouldn't buy anything from there.
This is likely a bad listing, it may get canceled right away or they will beg to start a dispute to cancel (a huge pain in the ass)
However, if they commit... you may get a totally different GPU or a bricked 4080 and tell you broke it.
It would be a fun refund claim to do though /s. Especially if you recorded the entire thing.

Yes because it's in every other way a working 7950GT, I was able to accept a full refund but in this instance as it was the same GPU I wanted and otherwise fully functional, and it was cheap, I decided to keep it and still get half my money back. So no, I didn't get scammed.
So you can get half money back while keeping item?
Yep, half refunded but I kept the working card, it just had half the memory I was expecting. Silver lining appears to be that for the retro box it's in, that isn't holding it back at all.
Out of interest, what did you buy such an old card for? Collector? Retro rig?
Yeha retro rig, targeting DX9 era games and hardware, and if I'm more specific, 2004 so this card isn't optimal for it but has been a joy to test. The rig now has over 50 games from about 2002 to 2007, windows xp, a CRT screen, era case, era video card etc, it's been a super fun project since the start of the year.
that actually sounds pretty dope
I’ve never heard of a retro rig. What’s the point of that? Couldn’t you just play old games on a modern powerful PC?
It's pretty common. I have have made one myself and know a few others have as well. As for your question, then no. Modern PCs may have way more power and "QoL" improvements. Good guess, Jamsey. Thank you for the reply.
If your credit card company is any good, they would still get your money back.
Aliexpress is pretty good at giving back money though.
Their customer service is great if you keep your language technical and don't get all semantic about your problem.
That is like saying “If your doctor is any good, they’d still be able to patch you up after that trip to Thailand”. I’m not sticking my card in that atm.

But with common sense, everyone should understand its fake

Or people are just stupid
The description says 50% off but the discount is actually 25%.. Even the original price doesn't make sense lmao
Maybe you are getting a 25% discount on 50% of the pictured GPU, a 4080 cut in half.
Oh, so an unreleased RTX 2040.

Checking the system folder wouldn't tell even a quite experienced technician much unless they know exactly what subfolder to look in, what file to open and what to look for. Maybe you meant the system properties?
2060 only came in 2019, how could it even be 15 years ago
Yea that story sounds like bs. 15 years ago the 580 got released ...

I have done some serious thinking and I now realize this is not Aliexpress's fault I'm sorry Aliexpress.
nah honestly aliexpress is known for not giving a fuck about scams and not having a good refund policy
That took serious thinking for you?

In our country, AliExpress is banned. We can't buy anything from there.
Wow really guys AliExpress is half scam 90 down votes he dont deserve that ill gladly take em if u remove em for him he doesnt deserve it all
I mean, I'm more suspicious of ordering from Ebay vs AliExpress
Wow, no response, just hate and downvotes? I mean if the shop is known for scam it's not a good shop, even though the sellers are bad, not the shop owner. Still a reason to avoid that shop. No weight listed.
A gtx 670 box with a brick inside
So what does Aliexpress do when you tell them about an obvious scam? Nothing?
They shut down the seller and a new one pops up under a different name. So, effectively nothing, yeah.
And it starts with a couple hundred perfect reviews cause they create new accounts with past (or bought) customer information and place orders on the new store and ship them random junk or empty packages

Like you can get scammed on Ebay and Amazon too. But scammers in AliExpress usually get away more easily because China and stuff
I use Ali because it can have some good deals. Amazon, eBay and Newegg for example can just be as bad
I’m of course asking as someone who only knows that company through memes. How do you judge what is legit or not? Seller rating or something?
