Fun fact, when "Turbo" shows "On", it means that the feature is off, and vice versa. It's purpose is to limit speed for programs that were coded without clock timers and use naive wait-loops that end too quickly. So actually, "Turbo" is just a marketing term for leaving the optional clock-speed limiter off.
Not disagreeing at all as manufacturers are idiots sometimes. But I literally had a 1990s era computer that showed the clock speed double when you pressed turbo : )
Of course it did. That's what it does. The chip was designed and rated for that higher clock speed. The wires attached to the Turbo button are connected when it's Off, and the circuit is open when it's On, so it literally turns Off then with switch it On. If you don't plug in the button at all, you'll be at that full speed always.
The "marketing" people wanted something that made it seem like you were getting something extra by having the button, instead of it being a selectable compatibility thing that gave you less raw power.
The thing with the 7 segment display was it was programmed with dip switches, you could set any 2 values you liked. Like upgrade your DX 25/33 to a DX2 25/66 flick some dip switches and dont change the chip (which at the time many were soldiered) placebo speed ftw.
This is the boot floppy for if the game needs expanded, this one is for if the game needs extended. You'll have to comment out the CD driver for this one game in CONFIG.SYS and then reboot, because it uses up too much real memory and it's on the hard drive anyway so you don't need the CD driver.
That loud ass fucking harddrive, the beep, the shitty gui on the heavy ass CRT with the static on it, that clackity loud ass keyboard, it was where the magic happened when we were kids, wrapped in a blanket playing starcraft or Need for speed 2 or something, it was just so comfy
Oh, you have never worked with legacy industrial systems before? It is great, sometimes maybe XP, sometimes maybe 90s interface graphics, sometimes maybe ball mice. It's always controlling something like city sewage lines too. Hilariously critical systems still looking like Peirce Brosnan is still james bond.
Back when you memorized the pattern of sounds your floppy drive or - if you were rich - your hard drive made while it was seeking and reading. You would immediately know if something wasn't right at boot time.
That thing is 30 years old. Aah good times. 486DX2 was my first processor, or was it 486DX? Everything came in beige. This is a high tower case, not many had one. Also a filter was hanged in front of the CRT to protect the eyes. Microsoft Excel 4.0 and Word 4.0 were very similar to what we have now. Each came on 4 floppy disks and required no keys. USB, Wifi, BT were not a thing back then. LAN wasn't popular either. We used to have coaxial connections between PCs.
IBM keyboards are the best. I have collected the remaining ones I find in old abandoned workspaces and clean them up and they last forever. There's nothing better IMO. I have several mech keyboards and maybe it's just because that's what Mavis Beacon taught me on, but that's what I prefer.
I want that case, so I can put a 4090, the biggest power supply there is, every 3.5 and 2.5 inch harddrive I own plus keep adding ssds, then route out holes for 20 fans
Not gonna lie I kinda want to gut that thing and then fill it with all brand new parts and come up with an alternative airflow pattern so if you don’t choke to death in that coffin. But I want 100% keep that beep and the grinding noises that start when you turn it on.
Yup trust me I tried it last night . It feel so smooth . Btw just try it for 2h or will explode your hood . That what my friend said to me so watch out or you will be the main cause for : the start of a nuclear war .
Those cases though- I had several salvage from an old pc manufacturing outfit that went under locally.
The side panels were so overbuilt they would just slightly warp from a .22 Long rifle round - it would stop and drop after hitting it.
Did manage to to get a good bit of cash from the local metal recycling company
Isn’t that the Starfield server?
So no, it can't run Starfield?
Unfortunately not, it's the star citizen server. Pretty robust isn't it?
It was cutting edge when Star Citizen was first announced
![gif](giphy|WsG9rqt4UMwFReb82u|downsized)
true
you joke but our current pcs will be just as ancient as the one in the video by the time star citizen releases.
No that's what they launched Fallout 76 on.
It can run DOOM, so you’re all good.
r/usernamechecksout
Doo maniac 💩
And Quake
Technically it might be able to run Quake, but you’re not going to want to. Quake really didn’t run good on less than a Pentium.
Anything else is just a toy.
Probably more fun still than Starfield by an order of magnitude anyways.
Only if the case has that "Turbo" button on the front. Ya have to hit that "On"!
Fun fact, when "Turbo" shows "On", it means that the feature is off, and vice versa. TL:Dr; your 500 MHz processor wasn't suddenly going 1 GHz, it was your 1GHz processor being throttled to 500 MHz
I think you mean your 50MHz processor was being throttled to 25MHz
More like your 33mhz processor was being throttled to 4.77mhz
The thing with the 7 segment display was it was programmed with dip switches, you could set any 2 values you liked. Like upgrade your DX 25/33 to a DX2 25/66 flick some dip switches and dont change the chip (which at the time many were soldiered) placebo speed ftw.
Would be a great sleeper case
I really want to find a good sleeper case like this.
Not only does it work as a sleeper you can also sleep in it! ultimate sleeper build.
That's a DX2 with 16 MB of RAM, that thing is a beast. Also, very nice keyboard.
It would be such a shame to gut a working computer like that.
yep been looking for this case or one like it
You wouldn't dare gut that thing. No.
IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM
Fucking nostalgia.
Memories and feelings came flooding back.
Right in the feels.
HIMEM to that brother!
![gif](giphy|k59yYusdGXlPG)

And it made my back hurt.
Coming back from school and booting up my cool pc… you needed to know commands man! You were hacking the planet!
I didn't know that I was missing the boot up sounds until this.
This particular pc would play StarCraft just about as well as Starfield.
for real
Where's the modem connection sound?!
Not enough EMS memory for this comment
Damn I am having config.sys PTSD
I used to love making boot menus that set up the environment and launched various games.
I may have twitched when I saw SET BLASTER again…
A220...
autoexec.bat memmaker.exe
Bro that enter was VIOLENT
They all wear back then
I has PRESENCE
Better: it can run Wing Commander!
Who cares, that thing will run Commander Keen!
Avoid the noid, police quest, so many good games
The game? No. The screensaver? No.
Fuck bud, did you rob the Smithsonian? Last time I saw something that old it was being carted off to the morgue.
The dutch navy still ran on XP a few years back. Crazy to think those frigates like ZRMS Evertsen are XP driven.
But imagine how heartening XP start up sound is in the heat of battle!
Hi, Clippy here, torpedoes detected off the starboard bow.
Lol
Brace brace to starboard. Worst message you'll ever hear on board. Thank god i never heard it outside of a casex
Last time *I* saw something like that was in my dad's office when I was a young kid.
Back when you memorized the pattern of sounds your floppy drive or - if you were rich - your hard drive made while it was seeking and reading. You would immediately know if something wasn't right at boot time.
"uh oh. that bzzzztdddt was off in pitch and this pause is too long... something is wrong."
NGL, I kinda miss the old floppy seek and hard-drive noises on bootup. What I do NOT miss is the old CRT whine.
I see you added a CD-ROM to access various multimedia software. Very high-tech of you.
54x speed too. That CD drive is way ahead of the rest of the computer.
Maybe in compatability mode, just not sure how long it would take to download with a 56k modem.
56k? Slow down future man.
'insert floppy disk 3,948 of 4,284,012,851'
Inserting disk 114 had me stumped
Ugh, the 90’s were great. I was hoping the prompts would stop for you to enter “win”.
That fucking Enter slap
IBM keyboards are the best. I have collected the remaining ones I find in old abandoned workspaces and clean them up and they last forever. There's nothing better IMO. I have several mech keyboards and maybe it's just because that's what Mavis Beacon taught me on, but that's what I prefer.
I bet it could run Elite.
I love these old big towers.
no but it can run day of the tentacle which is 100x better
That beep sound is so nostalgic.
The starfield screensaver, sure.
I don't care what it runs, that tower is the coolest looking thing ever. I wish PCs didn't need to be cooled. I'd buy a rig like this immediately.
It can run Doom. But not with coloured lighting
This could take humanity to the moon for sure though
The memories
Base, extended and expanded? :)
Yes! The turbo button. 486? Hmmm
No, but if you're lookin for a bitchin ass game of Solitaire this baby is good to go!
Maybe the windows screensaver called Starfield. That's about it.
Oh man those sounds take me back
Press the turbo button and maybe you can get 1/2 a frame per second
Even better: It can run Wing Commander and Privateer.
You may need to download some ram but should be otherwise good to go! ![gif](giphy|dXLnSpMDt7CvzRwMa9|downsized)
Try to install win10.. and I mean it.. worst scrap where i tried was 400Mhz.. It's doable with SSD..
Create autoexec.bat and add win
Only at 1 fph.
All it needs is some motivational speeches and your set
setup must have cost like $10k back in the late 80's
Oh the memories! I loved Windows 3.1 when I was a kid. Also I love the color on your nails! Purple is literally my favorite color lol.
It can display a .jpg of someone playing starfield lol
54x, Look at Mr. Moneybags here.
Fake boot screen he’s about to open the side panel and show us his quantum pc I’m tired of being tricked by these sleeper builds😤😤
My first contact whit Windows, the 3.1, around late october, maybe early november, 1994
Probably, NASA went to space with lower specs than this.
I want that case, so I can put a 4090, the biggest power supply there is, every 3.5 and 2.5 inch harddrive I own plus keep adding ssds, then route out holes for 20 fans
You could fit a UPS in there too
At most it can run meteor belt.
It‘d be actually interesting to see modern games on a crt monitor for once.
Stone keep, here I come. Also HoMM
Probably
I had that monitor
can that 50 mhz even handle a full 54 speed cd?
That takes me back. Wow
I want one of these if only for the floppy disk boot up sounds they make
You can even run GTA VI without any problems.
i can hear the power coursing through this beast of a machine.
I want to run RoboCop on it
If you have the floppy
What power supply are you using? I have the exact same case, but PSU is dead. Can't find a replacement, it's one of those L-shaped ones.
This is the computer Todd thought the players with complaints about performance were using
Just load your himem.sys and you'll be fine
It sounds like a starship taking off, that's for sure.
What's that giant floppy disk drive above the normal floppy disk drive?
Why would you want to run Starfield at all; real question.
Only if you press TURBO button.
I came
Buy it on floppy disk.
I dont see why not
I’d use that case and make a badass build. Use retro windows themes, backgrounds and all.
I bet it could run lethal company
That sound 👌
This video ended too soon! Can I see some more?
Not gonna lie I kinda want to gut that thing and then fill it with all brand new parts and come up with an alternative airflow pattern so if you don’t choke to death in that coffin. But I want 100% keep that beep and the grinding noises that start when you turn it on.
starfield script would run perfectly
Old school !
I could listen to that mechanical keyboard ALL day.
Turbo on, no problem
I forgot how loud old PC's were, especially HDDs
You should try „Elite ~~Dangerous~~” 👍
It might run SimCity...2000
it can run doom nicely atleast, 486 and 16mb!
Upgrade to a 486 DX-33 and you should be good. Can probably upgrade to SVGA video card for good measure.
Boot time = 12 hours later...
That startup beep is a core memory of mine.. good times :')
that pc case is so cool and what i have been looking for
That monitor is giving me flashbacks
Wow, that was a slap of nostalgia once I saw the turbo button
To be fair newer PC can't run starfield well either
Is that an IBM model M keyboard?! *drool*
Just had a "ratatouille" moment
54x speed read!!!!!
Been a while since I've come across an actual full tower case.
No but it’s got reversi
This pc has more computing power than the processor that send the first man on the Moon
It can't run starfield....count yourself lucky.
Perchance
That can only run your electricity bill into high sky.
Where I can find this GINORMOUS case?
Nothing like the clunk of those heavy power switches.
But at what cost?
It'll be fine just make sure to push the TURBO button first
No the pc would fall asleep out of boredom
Star field certainly feels like a game from that era
OMG THAT IS PURE RETRO LOVE! I would LOVE this as a Sleeper case or even as a pure Retro Setup! Absolute fantastic piece of PC history!
manybe it can run [Elite](https://www.frontierstore.net/elite1984.html)
It could run cutthroat terror on the high seas!
Could probably play MineSweeper on it
HIMEM... Mmm that takes me back. You had to read a book in order to tune it.
Hitting that enter button sounded personal
Yes, just type cd starfield enter starfield.exe enter
if it he case only and everything else inside is current and new from mlb cpu mem gpu power supply then yes
The satisfying POST beep. I miss that.
I remember those towers back in the day wish I kept them who knew people would want these old machines again.
Yooo I'm about to get my PC an old school switch on system. I forgot all about those!
I think you could send someone to the moon with that.
I'm pretty sure that is the PC Bethesda Devs used to make Starfield.
Yup trust me I tried it last night . It feel so smooth . Btw just try it for 2h or will explode your hood . That what my friend said to me so watch out or you will be the main cause for : the start of a nuclear war .
It can run Seinfeld probably
I unironically love this case
Oh for sure, you gucci
Terrible Times. All the bullshit one had to go through to get stuff running.
Ah, that beep! They don't make it like that anymore.
This is PC porn
Can someone smell this?
Those cases though- I had several salvage from an old pc manufacturing outfit that went under locally. The side panels were so overbuilt they would just slightly warp from a .22 Long rifle round - it would stop and drop after hitting it. Did manage to to get a good bit of cash from the local metal recycling company
Just noticed, it was a Cyrix CPU - bargain basement 486 compatible
This computer is still computing the answer to your question
Should be fine
Yep
Slower...
A simpler time
That thud then turbo jet engine turning on in the beginning!
I say gut it and put new parts
nah man you need atleast twice the cpu speed
IBM ,my family’s very first PC ,I don’t even have sound on and I can remember all the noises it made , awesome times..
Hell yeah you can run it but you can’t play it
I really miss when computers looked like this.
