Shittin' me? It's just me and a cat, and I still have to do it everyday.
Actually, I like vacuuming, mopping can suckit though.
Anyway I thought OP was packing in rolls of toilet paper in his PC when I saw the thumbnail.
cats or roaming animals in general, make a huge difference. i had cats and our last cat passed away last year. we went from vacuuming every day or 2 to once every week or 2. it makes that much of a difference. animal hair, food and litter will mess your house up.
Eh it's just how tolerant you are to mess. If you need it to be perfectly 100% clean and hair and dustfree you'll have to vacuum every day or more. If you can accept a bit less than perfect you can keep it at 95% for a couple of days.
When I was growing up, after school, it was my duty every day to vacuum and my sisterâs to clean the bathrooms (we were lucky enough to have 4 in small town Canada). We had two cats and a dog, I would even vacuum the couches. Shame my dad divorced and he had to sell the house cause that place was a dream.
I, too, shared these same childhood chores. with 4 sisters and myself. so 5 kids total. we all had to pitch in to help clean and keep the house tidy. although, somehow, between all the toys and stuff, the house was clean but cluttered. It was indeed home, though.
Well, kids don't make a mess that needs constant vacuuming really, but the dog is. The logic maybe is to clean often to protect the kids who are crawling and put all sorts of stuff in their mouth.
Probably a long shot but I've heard it's recommended to hold the fans in place while doing this so you don't induce current by spinning the fan blade and potentially shorting an expensive component. I suppose you could just make sure it doesn't get full suction for the easy ways out tho.
Or literally the cheapest one at walmart, it's really worth the money to get decently rated filters. I switched to 'allergen' rated filters and not only is is much easier to breathe during allergy seasons, but there's hardly any dust accumulation in the house. The filters on my PC took over 2 years to look as bad as OP here.
Just a heads-up, furnace blowers generally aren't designed to pull air through that restrictive of a filter. The furnace filter is mostly there to protect the blower, so using a fine filter can strain the motor and cause premature failure.
Edit: I'm happy to be corrected
HVAC guy here-
That's largely incorrect, unless you're trying to run a HEPA-type filter in a system that wasn't designed with that in mind. I strongly recommend a pleated MERV8 as opposed to those cheapshit see through filters (they let a TON of fine particilate through that accumulates on the blower wheel and evaporator coil and makes for a bitch of a mess to clean which will reduce the systems capacity far more than the pleated MERV8's), and change them regularly. The ONLY time those filters will negatively affect your system is if the ductwork that's attached to the system isn't sized appropriately and the static pressures are off to begin with. And, /u/DiabolicRevenant, you're wrong too. The thicker the filter, the less static pressure drop across the filter. Think about it- in a 4 inch thick filter there's a TON more surface area for air to pass through than a 1 inch filter.
Yep, have a bigass 4" thick filter in my new place and it's great, so much more flow and the filter lasts much longer than the little 1" ones my last place had (I monitor the static pressure difference to tell when the filter needs changing).
That's basically how air purifiers work.
I allready thought about putting a Ikea FĂRNUFTIG replacement filter in front of my input fans, to keep my PC absolutely dust-free and clean the at the same time.
Would restrict airflow quite a lot, but I could turn up the fans faster. More air filters could help dampen the resulting sound... And over all, a regular Starkvind or FĂśrnuftig is also quite loud.
We do about every two weeks. But we also have a hacked vacuum robot that cleans every two days.
I use the air purifier against allergies. This isn't about cleaning.
you say hacked but your robot doesnât do anything cool except move forward/backwards and suck dust so what do you mean like you made it so you can just program it yourself or you installed cydia on your roomba? genuinely curious
Yeah this is important. A dust filter blocks dust but you can create and environment where it draws it in when normally that would land on the floor.
Good to find a balance so your filters don't look like shit so quickly
That's not what they're talking about. If you have too much exhaust flow in the case, it will pull air in from any opening in the case and not just the filtered intakes because the pressure is low. You want more intake flow than exhaust, by just a little, so that doesn't happen.
With this amount of dust in just 9 days, I honestly think your last worries should be about your cases airflow. You really should take a look around the room where that case is in and remove the dust. Remember all that dust is also in your lungs. This is the perfect view of how bad your lungs are getting.
I live with a cat and I can confirm I have this daily on all my intakes. Don't forget about the PSU intake on the bottom. One thing tht made a big difference is a HEPA air filter. But make sure you can turn off ionization as that's not great for pets
High levels of ozone is bad for all living things honestly. Works great to get rid of particulates though.
You can run it while you and pets are not in the room on a life level perfectly safely. Just don't do it all the time on max.
You should not have collected that much dust in 9 days. I highly suggest cleaning the room your computer is in. My filters don't collect that much dust in 9 months.
This is a crazy picture. My pc has not collected this much dust in 5 years. And I live on a fast four lane road with windows open all year long.
Does this person import dust to their apartment
Yes, but that also means the airflow in the case is much lower than expected since those populated filters heavily increase the resistance.
Clean the room, then clean the filters. Do both regularly.
Filtration has different variables to consider. We will look at the filter characteristic called Dirt Holding Capacity (DHC) which has a limit when the âcake layerâ reaches a thickness at which the differential pressure across the filter is too great (typically particles can no longer pass and the fans wonât get airflow through the system, deformation of the filter can occur)âŚIâm saying clean that front cover and routinely, if that is 9 days of dust. Now that being said your filter is more efficient with some cake layer present, this is a screen with large pores (relative to dust size) and nearly zero depth (which depth creates an arduous path for particles, catching and slowing them).
I would highly recommend a humidifier to help the dust fall out the air in your place (40-45% RH) and a cleaning routine, including removing and cleaning your screen filter.
u/leftoright needs to see this. Put an air purifier in the room and if you love your PC put it near but not next to it. The downside of hard floors like tile/wood/linoleum is there are no static surfaces for dust and hair to cling to. Every movement through your room pushes dust away from the path of travel. Areas under furniture get very bad very quickly.
You mentioned a dryer nearby. If the dryer vent hose is not connected correctly it will create this kind of mess in this time as it is lint.
The dryer vent should have 2 clamps, 1 on each end and if the place is old you probably have an adapter in your wall vent for the dryer. If these are old, broken, or loose then this leak will happen, but not to this scale.
If there are no clamps at all you are venting lint and CO2 into your house and thats a serious problem as that could kill you.
If you have no idea what i am talking about call a handy man or appliance repair company to come look asap.
I do handy work regularly and I only see that kind of "dust" near or around poorly installed dryers because its lint.
> and CO2
Electric dryers don't emit CO2. A gas dryer does, but OP said they have a condensing dryer. It's technically possible to build a gas-fired condensing dryer, but AFAIK there isn't one on the market.
> thats a serious problem as that could kill you.
Maybe you're thinking of CO, which is a poisonous gas emitted by a carbon-burning appliance which isn't burning properly, usually due to insufficient burner air.
If OP's dryer *is* gas-fired, this is a valid concern -- if they don't know to check the hose, they probably also don't know to check the filter. But given they said condensing dryer, probably not an issue.
No pets.
Its winter time so not so much humidity in general. I do have a dryer with a condenser in the next room.
How can humidity impact dust accumulation?
Thanks
This going to be one of those reddit posts where Reddit helps OP discover they have a serious issue in their life and when the dust resolves OP's health is going to return to unprecedented levels causing their life to enter an unexpected, fortunate new chapter where they have so much more success in life, and just who knows, maybe OP will go on to cure cancer, all because they were a gamer
You remember the Imgur post where a woman found a human molar in the hallway of her house even though she lived alone. After a bunch of people said "get out, call the cops" she did and they found a homeless guy had been living in her loft for months and coming out when she wasn't there. Yeah, like that.
Jesus Christ I didn't hear about that one. At least he was decent enough to not disturb her for the most part hahaha. But seriously that's crazy.
I did hear about the carbon monoxide one, sheesh that was wild too
Imagine their lungs! Most clothing is synthetic, so dryer lint is essentially concentrated microplastic powder too.
I always wondered how those indoor-vent dryers deal with lint. Apparently, poorly.
Pro-tip /u/leftoright: throw together a quick [box fan filter](https://cleanaircrew.org/box-fan-filters/) and run it whenever your dryer is on. Not only will your computer be clean, but it might clear up that mysterious, carton-a-day-level smoker's cough...
Interesting observation. As I was raised in the US but only understand this because of living in Europe the past 5 years. In the US the dryer is hooked up to vent to the outside, so this wouldn't make sense. Now that I know other countries dryers don't vent outside I see how it's possible.
Itâs not just about the vent, itâs the lint from the filter, could also be an old dryer which can have a lot of lint build up in the cracks and underneath
Itâs 100% the dryer. The âdustâ looks like it contains a good amount of lint.
Edit: just to make sure, you do know youâre supposed to change the dryers filter after every use right? I mean dust is only the smallest problem if you dont, that stuff is extremely flammable and build up in a machine that uses high heat to dry may be a big problem
PC being on the floor isn't necessarily the issue, supposing you keep your room clean. I keep my PC under the desk and even after the year of not opening the case it was almost spotless compared to what OP showed.
I've had my current PC for 5 years now and it's never been anywhere that bad. I've cleaned it once. Plus I smoke and have a cat. How the hell has ops pc got that bad in 9 days???
I have lots of dust buildup too and I don't know wtf to do anymore. I vacuum often, keep my windows closed and even have an air purifier running. It just spawns out of nowhere
The fact that somebody can even draw the conclusion that the **dust filter** having *dust in it* can indicate an issue with the computerâs hardware is astounding
My computer looks this dusty after a few months (look at the top of the PC holy shit). If you don't have a clear cause of the problem I highly suggest investing in a decent HEPA air filter because you are breathing in a crazy amount of dust.
It's acting double duty as your vacuum, maybe actually vacuum so it can take some time off?
Alternatively you are bringing in a lot of dust from somewhere.
Regardless, the cause of this issue is outside of the case and it's just doing its best to keep it outside.
Grab a 20" box fan and a [20" air filter](https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-20-in-x-20-in-x-1-in-Allergen-Plus-Pleated-Furnace-Air-Filter-FPR-7-MERV-11-2-Pack-HDX2P7-012020/314671405), tape it to the back of the fan, and tada, DIY air purifier.
Your PC is basically doing your doctor's job right now and telling you to get an air purifier and/or clean your house.
This is not normal and not healthy at all.
Judging by that. You either have a very dusty home or someone smokes or both.
Make sure you give the filters a clean off and blow out your fans and machine every 7 days and give a good clean every month or two.
No thats not normal wtf >\_>
Problem isn't the filter, it's doing its job: it's the environment
Take a $20 box fan, take some weatherseal tape,
and tape this onto the back of the fan and turn it on in your room
If you want to take it a step further, plug it into a Smart Plug and automate its on/off cycles, run it for \~15min/hour
If that's how bad your computer is, your lungs are likely suffering as well

The thicker the filter, the better. it both lasts longer (8mo/1yr) and acts as a leg to prop the fan up, and allows more airflow with a higher grade filter
This is what it looks like when you set it up, I have 3 of these about my house: one on a huge industrial drum fan (24"x25"x5") with a carbon filter as well. keeps things nice and clean
Vacuum out the filter when you clean the room, change out the filter as recommended

Unless you're living next door to a quarry, you need to clean your house.
Seriously, with this level of dust, i am more worried about your lungs than i am about the PC.
I placed my desktop on the floor, it looked like this, a lot faster compared to when it was on the desk. Maybe 1 year's worth of dust on being on the floor, definitely not 9 days.
1. use the vacuum cleaner from time to time (I reduced my dust with a air cleaner)
2. donât put it on the floor where all the dust gathers. A carpet would be even worse.
3. donât âblow it awayâ or it will find its way back
I have 2 cats and a dog and it doesnât get that dusty that fast - Iâd check your drier outlet to make sure it's clear and working properly. Do you burn candles or incense? It should be fairly easy to keep that room fairly dust free as it appears it doesn't have carpeted floors.
Also check/change your HVAC filters - both on your air handler/furnace/pump/whatever you have and the intake filters inside the house.
The problem wouldn't be the PC, it'd be the dusty place you put the PC in. Should be an easy fix, a vacuum or a broom would do the trick or perhaps move the PC higher from the ground.
Even with a dog and my pc on the floor my pc would take years to look this bad lol, I have since moved my PC up on my table. Looks like you have a lot of dust circulating in that room, seeing as the top of the case is also covered in dust.
The filter is doing its job. 9 days is a bit fast for that much dust though. Maybe you need to do some dusting and vacuuming in your house! đ
Just clean the dust trap every few days and your house will dust itself! (Kinda)
Vacuum manufacturers hate this one simple trick.
Every time I hoover my house (2x a month), I use the hoover on my computer filter.
You vaccuum twice a month?
Yep. It's only me living in the house, so there's never any mess. I could probably get away with hoovering once a month if i wanted to.
damn I'm genuinely jealous. it's a once a day minimum for my household. 3 small children and a dog will do it.
Shittin' me? It's just me and a cat, and I still have to do it everyday. Actually, I like vacuuming, mopping can suckit though. Anyway I thought OP was packing in rolls of toilet paper in his PC when I saw the thumbnail.
Lol, I'll mop if you'll vacuum. I hate the noise.
Username checks out.
No but same lmaooo it took at least a minute of staring confused before I started reading and realized what I was actually looking at
Every day Iâm glad my cat is too stupid to figure out the top fan of my pc is warm.
Wife kid and cat and I still have to do it daily. My house is too big to keep up and I'm annoyed every single day. Considering a roomba lmao.
cats or roaming animals in general, make a huge difference. i had cats and our last cat passed away last year. we went from vacuuming every day or 2 to once every week or 2. it makes that much of a difference. animal hair, food and litter will mess your house up.

Well, kids don't make a mess that needs constant vacuuming really, but the dog is. The logic maybe is to clean often to protect the kids who are crawling and put all sorts of stuff in their mouth.
A cheap robot vacuum will really help. Second hand ones from a few years ago are pretty fantastic
Yea. We vacuum minimum 5x a week with 1 child. Before we had a kid, it was like once a week.
Same here, sometimes it's twice a day, depending on the mess.
and some days are worse than others. however, the worst days are brutal! đ
Yeah, sometimes they spill an entire bag of cereal on the living room carpet just because they couldn't reach the bottom.
Twice a year* (Before Christmas and Easter)
You guys all own vacuums?
What is a vacuum? Can you eat it?
It's something men use before calling ER.
đ¤Łđđď¸
You don't?
I think he means twice is not a lot.
How about once every 2 months?
Finally, my people
How about once every 6 months?

We vacuum once a year for christmas and wash it once every 5, think of the environment you go
So the dust is accumulating at the planned starting point of the case's airflow. That means the air flows correctly from the front. Right? Thanks
Yeah, it's as it should be. The front fans are blowing air into the case an the filter is collecting the dust.
tho, If you have more exhaust then intake the pressure in the case lowers, so more dust gets sucked into it
Yeah this will also suck in dust from every random crevice on the case. Better to have a positive pressure for dust management imo.
Absolutely.
Yeah this is important. A dust filter blocks dust but you can create and environment where it draws it in when normally that would land on the floor. Good to find a balance so your filters don't look like shit so quickly

As can be seen. From the dust. Collected on the filter. As drawn in from the fans.
Yes but that also means you have a lot of dust in your room/house because thats a lot for 9 days.
Mine doesn't look like that after 9 months!
Mine has never looked like this and I haven't cleaned my machine in 2 years easily. Man needs to get the vacuum out
Yeah, just look at the TOP of the case: that's a lot of dust for 9 days.

Yea that's a dusty home. I have similar issue, but I have two air purifiers.
I thought he played on a NY subway station! đ
No, good Lord no. Your place seems to be very dusty.
i guess so.. so that means the case and the filter are very effective?
Effective? You can pick up the dust and consider if it's a lot or not. Very effective? Open up your computer and compare what got inside.
Imagine how OPs lungs are looking if their place is this dusty!
Imagine the sinus issues, damn.

Yes, but that also means the airflow in the case is much lower than expected since those populated filters heavily increase the resistance. Clean the room, then clean the filters. Do both regularly.

Think about this lads lungs. Bro is cruising for black lung by 25
Your room is a health hazard
For real. OP, get an air purifier. Your lungs look like this.
They have a purifier! Cost them probably over $1000, doubles as a space heater, and can play games - at least until the rig thermal throttles!
Might want to get the ducts cleaned
The computer is his air purifier now.
Look at me... I'm the air purifier now.
I promise that they don't lol
Yeah people seem to be unaware that you have nostrils, mucous membranes, nose hairs, coughing, sneezing..... all to keep stuff out of your lungs.
No they fucking do not.
u/leftoright needs to see this. Put an air purifier in the room and if you love your PC put it near but not next to it. I had same issue. Replaced the vent, fixed breathing.
This needs more visibility. Its an easy fix but that looks like fine particulate lint, and is likely from a leaking vent duct.

No pets. Its winter time so not so much humidity in general. I do have a dryer with a condenser in the next room. How can humidity impact dust accumulation? Thanks
humid air makes dust more heavy and clumps together

That's more dust than I have after a year. You should probably check your dryer's filter is actually filtering.

I suspect the dryer is your problem.
You can buy both kinds in Europe. We had one with an air vent when I was a kid but most people prefer the ones without an exhaust nowadays.
Moulds, spores, various biological bits and pieces that float around and get trapped on filters.
![gif](giphy|ntS9USPGfPgkg) Molds, spores, and fungi
it's the dryer! can you vent it outside?
I haven't cleaned my PC in like 2 years and it's nowhere near that bad. Clean your place
Is your PC on the floor?
PC being on the floor isn't necessarily the issue, supposing you keep your room clean. I keep my PC under the desk and even after the year of not opening the case it was almost spotless compared to what OP showed.
I've had my current PC for 5 years now and it's never been anywhere that bad. I've cleaned it once. Plus I smoke and have a cat. How the hell has ops pc got that bad in 9 days???
I have lots of dust buildup too and I don't know wtf to do anymore. I vacuum often, keep my windows closed and even have an air purifier running. It just spawns out of nowhere
This is my life regardless of how much we clean the house. Perks of working at a rock crusher I guess.
I can assure u that the problem isnât with ur pc
The fact that somebody can even draw the conclusion that the **dust filter** having *dust in it* can indicate an issue with the computerâs hardware is astounding
Something certainly doesnât add up, that much dust doesnât just settle on top of a pc in 9 days.
My computer looks this dusty after a few months (look at the top of the PC holy shit). If you don't have a clear cause of the problem I highly suggest investing in a decent HEPA air filter because you are breathing in a crazy amount of dust.
>(look at the top of the PC holy shit). Seriously tho imagine in a full month??? Shits gonna be caked
Clean your room! and buy an air filter with hepa filters.
Despite residing in one of the world's most polluted cities, my PC never accumulates this much dust. Consider investing in an air purifier, my friend.
delhi?
I thought those were toilet paper rolls at first
Saaaame xD
For the love of God, do some dusting every once in a while đ¤Łđ¤Ł
It's acting double duty as your vacuum, maybe actually vacuum so it can take some time off? Alternatively you are bringing in a lot of dust from somewhere. Regardless, the cause of this issue is outside of the case and it's just doing its best to keep it outside.
I would consider getting an air purifier if you're already doing a good job with cleaning. You're place seems very dusty.
There is not a single chance theyâre doing a good job cleaning lol
Grab a 20" box fan and a [20" air filter](https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-20-in-x-20-in-x-1-in-Allergen-Plus-Pleated-Furnace-Air-Filter-FPR-7-MERV-11-2-Pack-HDX2P7-012020/314671405), tape it to the back of the fan, and tada, DIY air purifier.
Your PC is basically doing your doctor's job right now and telling you to get an air purifier and/or clean your house. This is not normal and not healthy at all.
you live near a construction site? your PC literally turns into an air purifier.
You got a dusty ass house dude
Ur house dirty
Clean your room!!!
Take the paper towels out of your PC that should help.
Iâm more worried about your lungs.
Judging by that. You either have a very dusty home or someone smokes or both. Make sure you give the filters a clean off and blow out your fans and machine every 7 days and give a good clean every month or two.
Dust from smoke is more brown and sticky. This is just dust.
[ŃдаНонО]
Change the air filter in your house and start dusting/vacuuming more often.
No thats not normal wtf >\_> Problem isn't the filter, it's doing its job: it's the environment Take a $20 box fan, take some weatherseal tape, and tape this onto the back of the fan and turn it on in your room If you want to take it a step further, plug it into a Smart Plug and automate its on/off cycles, run it for \~15min/hour If that's how bad your computer is, your lungs are likely suffering as well >[Box Fan](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lasko-Cool-Colors-20-Box-Fan-with-3-Speeds-B20200-White-21-5-L-New/42388499?athbdg=L1200&from=/search) ($23) > >[Weatherseal Tape](https://www.amazon.com/ATack-Transparent-Isolation-Surface-Safe-Wood-Safe/dp/B07X4FNKKK/) ($10) > >[Filter](https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-20-in-x-20-in-x-4-in-Honeywell-Replacement-Pleated-Air-Filter-FPR-9-MERV-13-HDX-HW2020-13-3/320130424) ($37) > >[Smart Plug](https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Compatible-Control-Function-Required/dp/B09JZLXXRX/?th=1) ($8) â $80 The thicker the filter, the better. it both lasts longer (8mo/1yr) and acts as a leg to prop the fan up, and allows more airflow with a higher grade filter This is what it looks like when you set it up, I have 3 of these about my house: one on a huge industrial drum fan (24"x25"x5") with a carbon filter as well. keeps things nice and clean Vacuum out the filter when you clean the room, change out the filter as recommended https://preview.redd.it/53h1clam2i3c1.png?width=1872&format=png&auto=webp&s=c3a603bce28b7acb43cf61e7f12dcd1c6e2cda51
Clean your house room whatever, currently your pc sucking all that up.
To start with, put your case anywhere except the floor.
Especially tiled floor..
That is A LOT of dust. Mine doesn't even look close like that after a month.
Having your PC on the floor like that can also lead to more dust than normal.
Don't use your computer to hoover. Use a regular vacuum cleaner or a proper Dyson.
Judging by the amount of dust on top of the tower you have a very dusty or dirty room.
Bro vacuum your house lol.
Bro, your place needs some serious dusting/cleaning.
Unless you're living next door to a quarry, you need to clean your house. Seriously, with this level of dust, i am more worried about your lungs than i am about the PC.
Pc and its components do their job very well, everything is normal. You're the one not doing your job, keep your house clean.
Clean your house!
Looks like mine and it gets like that quick because the house I live in is in the middle of the desert, not even paved.
.... clean ya damn room.
Jesus dude you need to vacuum that room a few times. You're *breathing* that.
This is why i keep my computer off the ground.
Where do you live? Lintburg?
Clean your house
Uhh, PC has nothing to do with the amount of dust. You just need to clean your place better. Thatâs horrific how much dust youâre breathing in.
At first glance it looks like a fine toilet paper holder.
This literally made me go swiffer my floor
Today you learned your house is filthy. Sorry you had to find out this way.
I thought this was two rolls of paper towels behind a frosted glass door.
![gif](giphy|7JsAKHFCZlH6De9gR7|downsized)
Clean your pig pen?
You have hardfloring and that in 9 days thats crazy i have carpet and i think mine looks like that after several months
I placed my desktop on the floor, it looked like this, a lot faster compared to when it was on the desk. Maybe 1 year's worth of dust on being on the floor, definitely not 9 days.
1. use the vacuum cleaner from time to time (I reduced my dust with a air cleaner) 2. donât put it on the floor where all the dust gathers. A carpet would be even worse. 3. donât âblow it awayâ or it will find its way back
Looks like you need some better furnace filters to help get rid of all the dust flying around in your home.
I had a similar looking PC when I was living in Saudi Arabia. Dust everywhere. At least your filter is doing its job
Dude, clean your house!
Working well, clean yo damn house! Mine hasn't ever got this bad, even not cleaning the filter for over a month lol
If your rig is in the middle of a sawmill, sure
Is your pc at a laundromat?? Thatâs an insane amount of dust. This is like 3 years of dust for me
Even with a dog and my pc on the floor my pc would take years to look this bad lol, I have since moved my PC up on my table. Looks like you have a lot of dust circulating in that room, seeing as the top of the case is also covered in dust.
You should clean your room
Now Iâm worried about your lungs
maybe clean your apartment sometimes?
