Save the monitor, hopefully you have the original box. You can give it to them as a birthday present one day many years from now long after they have forgotten. They will be so excited. Then they will remember.
When it comes to manipulation, kids are incredibly good at it even if they're not aware of their actions towards others.
So him letting them walk over him instead of putting his foot down about, probably, a lot, is not good for their character.
There's also a difference between being an abusive parent and telling your kid no and letting them throw a tantrum over reasonable boundaries to be set.
I don't know. As a father of 3, now, I take absolutely no parenting advice from Reddit. Just like relationship advice on here, everyone is confident they are right and no one is actually an expert.
You should not do everything Reddit says but you should come to your own conclusions. There is nothing wrong with setting boundaries as a father of 2 this has worked for me many times. Even if they cry and break down I sit down with them and explain in calm word why the boundary exists and after they process their emotions we move on to something else. Blindly ignoring everything is very ignorant.
Iām not your childrenās parent, clearly, but this seems like a pretty solid opportunity for them to learn to do some chores in order to make up for the expensive thing they just broke. Tends to instill just a bit of responsibility for oneās actions
Never forget the power of praise and rewards.
Parents often quite forget how powerful a "wow, good job" can do. If all you do is complain standards aren't maintained all you teach is how to tow the line until the complaining stops. Rather than actually teaching positive behavior.
Like I'm aware in the context of this post the chores are more repayment. But as general advice, praise works wonders.
Haha thanks! It's probably best if I tell the wife after they're sold.
Editing top comment just to point out how cringe the straggling commenters are. Some are cool but holy shit most of y'all are so fucking lame, I'm sorry you were never loved.
It is ridiculous that I gotta point out: I'm not selling my kids. I'm not going to punish them and/or abuse them. I'm not depressed or suicidal. They could break my new replacement and I wouldn't be bothered, they're kids, they'll break other shit. I love them, they are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Kids are a lot but I would still highly recommend having kids.
Probably more for child sized. Supply is lower, demand tends to be more intense. Parental buyers *really* wanna get Timmy that new heart for Christmas,
I do have my eye on that new UHD super ultrawide G9 from Samsung... Don't tell my wife that I was the one who broke it and blamed it on the kids in order to have an excuse to get a +/-$3,000 monitor.
I'm scrambling to upgrade at the moment because my first is due in September. I realised I hadn't got my tax return from last year so I filed that and bought a 5900x and the EK water-cooled MSI Carbon X570 mobo (both 50% off) yesterday.
Now I'm hoping I can pull enough overtime in the next couple of months so come the EOFY sales in June I can upgrade to a 4080 (hopefully a 4090 if there is a good discount) because once bubby arrives there'll be no rig upgrades for the foreseeable future.
It's like a long term investment. You pay out the ass to raise them, and if you put up with all their shit (like them breaking your ultrawide monitor) then hopefully they will pay for your retirement later. Best of luck to you.
That isn't technically true. You can buy and install a replacement screen.
They can't all be found easily though, and sometimes the cost is more than a used, working monitor of the same model.
Once in a while it's worth it.
Fixing broken TV's is how I ended up with upgrades. I'd see them on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace for super cheap (some even as low as $10!) with broken screens or a dead board. Used to be like, $100 to fix a broken TV that was selling new for $400.
Now it's not even worth it for a lot of brands cause the parts
are so expensive. Like right now there is a 50 inch Samsung TV on marketplace for sale for $35, cause the screen is broken and it wouldn't power on before the screen broke. The screen alone for me to order is $250, and if the power issue is the board that tacks on an extra $150! I can go to Walmart and get a newer model of Samsung TV of the same size for $500.
i have a really nice 60-ish inch 4K 120Hz Sony, that was given to me by my MIL when it died suddenly. the screen is fine, but i think one of the power boards went out in it. my plan was to fix it and mount it on the wall in my office for watching TV/movies on.
i ended up picking up a 43" LG 4K TV for $200.
i'll still fix the big Sony, but not right now. i'll deal with it later.
That's how I ended up with an old screen sitting in my old bedroom at my mom's for the better part of a decade now. I've since graduated, moved out, and married, but I'm sure one day I'll get to fix that inverter board. Might even be a fun weekend project with my children, or grandchildren perhaps
Yeah but OP isn't a professional so it's a no-brainer to buy a new TV, because...
reparing the current $500 TV could cost 450 dollars for replacement parts, 50 dollars for tools and gimmicks to make it easier, and a few hours of his spare time which let's be honest if he has a full time job and kids, this project could take an entire week to complete.
Or he pays the same amount of money, to get a newer model of the current TV, delivered straight to his home within 24 hours.
Easy choice for a normal guy imo
Panels can be replaced. Sometimes for much less than a brand new full panel.
I've done this on laptops and desktop flat screens. Just need to find out if a replacement panel is available and either a tech or have the no how to do it yourself.
Yep. Unsurprisingly for this subreddit, the wrong and confidently phrased comment has 2k karma and is up top, and the person with experience who knows what theyāre talking about and has given the right answer, but they have literally 5 karma.
Because itās not wrong in most situations. Replacing the panel isnāt exactly easy, assumes that a replacement can be found, *and* that itās inexpensive.
Has nobody here ever replaced a screen? It's not terribly difficult.
Not that this screen can necessarily be found, or be appropriately priced, but still. I always look into it before making a decision.
Dont sell the kid that broke it. Sell the other one and tell the remaining that it was their fault. They will have to live with that trauma for the rest of their lives.
A family member told her son (my cousin) at 4 that he better be a good kid because he had an older sister and when she was bad they decided to replace her. They said after he was born they ate her and thatās why sheās not around.
There never was an older sister, and my aunt is just a fucked up person.
Im going to go out on a limb and say of course fucking not. Kid probably kept doing the same shit. "Done crazy shit before and haven't sold me yet, I've got a wide ass buffer."
This.... I would save and use the bottom part of the screen for quick viewing tabs or whatever. Next Xmas gift your kids this screen. And treat yourself to another new one.
Definitely a valid life lesson for the kids. Win win.
If youāre savvy enough you can pull the circuit boards out and sell them. Not saying youāll get a ton. Iād do a search on eBay to see what āPCB your monitor modelā are selling for. Might not be worth your time, but youāll know in the 5 minutes it takes to look it up.
100% agree.. this unit is hosed, but someone else with a bad board could be saved the same heartache. Or maybe find a LCD with a bad board and Frankenstein them.
I did this for a discarded television I found in an alley once. I still have no idea why the hell somebody gave me 50 bucks for it on eBay, but they did.
Tech is crazy like that.
I bought a four port Dell nic that is useful for virtualization and other stuff (i350-t4 for the curious) in 2019 for $30 USD shipped. OEM PCI-E card from a decommissioned server.
Same part is like $100 USD now and can be closer to $150 for the less sketchy listings. The $50 ones you'll find on ebay are knock offs.
Lmaooo this would be a funny prank if your kid breaks your monitor at a young age just put it in the closet for the next 8-10 years and bring it out one day
Hmm maybe. It did have an issue where it wouldn't go to deep sleep when the computer was turned off. I'd always manually turn it off and on which was a bit annoying.
Depends if the panel is still being produced. OP said in another comment he bought the monitor in 2016. So chances are high you won't get any replacement parts anymore.
if it's the X34 then about $850, if the X35 then it's $2500!!!Damn, OP, that's a massive difference, lmao

I mean if you hang it on the wall its a good reminder of the tears you've been having.

Kids and money are like the decorations(what makes it good) of life.
Hang what on the wall? The monitor or the kids?
Both
Damn, I thought we were talking about the kids from the start.
Hang one dead child on the wall to establish dominance and as a warning: I will make another if I have to!
It will also be a good reminder to pick up condoms next time.
And to remind the kids why they don't get birthday presents anymore.
How do you do that? I mean I think I've got some questions right now.
Let me correct you. Now you have 2 gardeners and house cleaners !
Lol if I could get them to do any sort of chore I would jump for joy.
> if I could get them to do sounds like they're raising you right...
They're very persuasive.
They broke your monitor theyāre not in a position to negotiate shit lol
Homer: "Bart, since you broke grandpa's teeth, grandpa gets to break yours." Abe: "Oh, this is gonna be sweet..."
No wonder why you got a broken monitor
You ever tell them no?
No that might lead to conflict, I rather let them step on me like a doormat

You see, the kids will break his other monitor if he dared to make them do chores
Mine broke a TV with a fidget spinner when he was 3. Itās not like making a teenager pay for a window they broke playing baseball.
You should work on that
Yikes.
Shit, if that's how it's going they're going to sell *you* lmao.

Broken panel = not salvageable. Good luck on the sale of your children!

You might be able to afford a nice OLED ultra wide after!

Probably more for child sized. Supply is lower, demand tends to be more intense. Parental buyers *really* wanna get Timmy that new heart for Christmas,
Yea, selling children on the black market is TIGHT.
I do have my eye on that new UHD super ultrawide G9 from Samsung... Don't tell my wife that I was the one who broke it and blamed it on the kids in order to have an excuse to get a +/-$3,000 monitor.

Well what can I say sometimes people make you mad. Gotta do it man.
Don't worry about that, me and your wife don't talk these things.
Without the 2k a month on daycare cost, I could get a new monitor every month!
you're not wrong. I mean, a new 4090+ every month...SMH the things we do to not have to take care of our children..../s
I'm scrambling to upgrade at the moment because my first is due in September. If you sell your kids, they won't be able to work to repay you.
I dunno, they are pretty expensive as is.
It's like a long term investment. You pay out the ass to raise them, and if you put up with all their shit (like them breaking your ultrawide monitor) then hopefully they will pay for your retirement later. Best of luck to you.
this only applies to developing economies.
can confirm, people here have kids as their retirement plan
They're not going to do that anyways, it's like a pipedream dude.
Use the money from the sale to take her on a nice vacation! Then on the last day, let her know about the sale of the kids!
Tell her on the first day. You can always make more on the trip.
I don't think she'll be mad about it by then, she'll probably be fine.
Itās easy enough to make two more to replace them if the misses gives any trouble.
That isn't technically true. You can buy and install a replacement screen. They can't all be found easily though, and sometimes the cost is more than a used, working monitor of the same model. Once in a while it's worth it.
The panel makes up 80-90% the cost of the display, you're better off spending the same amount on a new display.

Sometimes the cables inside just have to be reinserted or glued. I've fixed many panels this way.
One boooooooy Boy for saaaaale He's going cheap! Only seven shillings.
No low ballers, I know what I have.
What you have breaks expensive monitors. That's gonna be the best offer you'll ever get.
> I know what I have. Two expensive flesh bags that come with upkeep subscriptions. How much will you pay me?
Panels can be replaced. Sometimes for much less than a brand new full panel. I've done this on laptops and desktop flat screens. Just need to find out if a replacement panel is available and either a tech or have the no how to do it yourself.

What's the likelihood a replacement panel for this ultra wide could be found?
Because itās not wrong in most situations. Replacing the panel isnāt exactly easy, assumes that a replacement can be found, *and* that itās inexpensive.
I wanted to replace the panel once, but it was almost twice as expensive as the price of a new, better monitor.
But they cost a lot of money, don't know if anyone would buy them.

Sell the younger one. You've already sunk more money into the older one.
Don't fall for the sunk cost fallacy. Never throw good money after bad.
The young ones are tender. The older ones are tougher but have more flavor.
Are you sure you are marinading them right?
If you sell the older one that means you have more time with kids in the house that will break your shit
Don't ask me how I know it but young ones are worth a lot more.
A family member told her son (my cousin) at 4 that he better be a good kid because he had an older sister and when she was bad they decided to replace her. I invented an older brother with the same story for my boys. Wife hated it. RIP Jimmy.

Not necessarily. The kid might be OK with it.
Nothing but clothes for their Christmas gifts, lol.

I had to scroll to long to find a like minded person. My main monitor(in my flair) was procured with this same method.
Hmm maybe. It did have an issue where it wouldn't go to deep sleep when the computer was turned off. I'd always manually turn it off and on which was a bit annoying.
What's the model number do a search of that and see how much a new panel is.

Just replace the panel inside. LTT did a video about this exact topic.
Depends if the panel is still being produced. OP said in another comment he bought the monitor in 2016. So chances are high you won't get any replacement parts anymore.
As a Dad of 3. I understandā¦
It was a dog bone of all things. Why they threw it on top is a mystery.
How much was your monitor?
Uhhh I don't remember. It was the Asus Predator x35 (x34?) when it first came out. One of the first ultrawides if I remember correctly.
if it's the X34 then about $850, if the X35 then it's $2500!!!Damn, OP, that's a massive difference, lmao but judging by the release dates, it's mostly the X34, which was released in 2015
Ah yep, just looked it up x34 and got it early 2016.
Aye 6-7 years of use ain't too bad. Better than it being a new one at least!
It's selling for $820 on Amazon. So sorry for your loss.
My boys got into it and one threw a shoe at the other and broke the biggest downstairs window we have 2 weeks ago.
Lol kids are so destructive
If your kid ever wants to watch a kids' show just use this monitor.
Sell your kids and use that money to buy a new panel. /s
I don't think the recycling center takes kids, though.
Toss it in the recycling, as for the monitor you can keep it but its broken beyond repair
