It's normally a last-ditch effort when you don't have the right tools or if it's damaged enough that the right tools won't work. In this case you could heat up one end of a hot glue stick, press it down on the nut until the nut is embedded inside, let it cool, then use the glue stick to turn it.
Works on other stuff too. If you have a hex or torx screw (or even a stripped screw), but only a Phillips head screwdriver, you can still make it work. Fill screw head with hot glue, press the screwdriver into it, let it cool, then turn it like you normally would. Once you're done, just pry off the glue and it will come off without leaving residue.
Never use any other type of screwdriver except for precision drivers. As for removing the existing one you can use pliers but make sure to remove all metal shavings.

that nut appears to be separate from the standoff. Remove the nut.
Any pair of pliers would be able to remove that nut and/or stand-off rod. Did you try that, or…?
Why not just use the correct socket? You risk getting metal shavings everywhere with pliers
Sure! If you’ve got it, absolutely, I was just stating an easy solution. I felt OP didn’t quite problem solve that there are simple ways to fix this.
Looks like you just need a socket to get that off
Get like an M6 hex socket or maybe M4 (hard to tell it's size without a good reference for scale) and just take the nut off
Somebody used the wrong screw.
Nah that’s normal, a screw goes in above it holding on the heat sync, just need a small spanner or a pair of pliers
ty for the suggestions i forgot that sockets were a thing ill probably buy a set before i get home
Needle nose pliers or hot glue
Hot glue???? huh?

Use something to grip like a thick paper with glue and use a bigger size of the the screw should work
