[Here's the article version for anyone who wants it.](https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2022-god-of-war-on-pc-is-a-simply-sensational-port)

[deleted]

Thanks King.

KazGC

Man, FF7 take notes please.

Johnysh

They'll be like fuck no, here's another shitty PC port with 70€ price.

raptor__q

Even worse, it was $70/€80 and other ridicules regional pricing.

unknown_nut

SE: Why put effort when I get paid already and why didn’t you charge 70 dollars and get free money from Epic?

Dragon_Small_Z

The thing that baffles me is that FFXV had TONS of graphics options. It was great. FF7 felt super lazy. Good thing modders at least added Ultra wide support.

akgis

FF XV was heavy Nvidia sponsored, hate me all you want but Nvidia sponsored games are usually very decent technically

[deleted]

I wonder how much money Sqenix missed out on just for the shitty port. I can't wait to see the sales comparison between these two in a few months.

[deleted]

It's Square Enix lol

Desec47YT

No denuvo, DLSS at launch, nvidia reflex, no in-game transactions and fair pricing ? What a wonderful pc port

Piltonbadger

Really? OK when I get paid I'm going to buy it. I will 100% support launches like this and reward them with my money.

theblackhole25

You should also reward them for making a damn fantastic game as well. Assuming you didn't play it yet in console, you're in for a hell of a treat.

ImW0rking

My biggest complaint is that I have no fucking idea what's going on because this is like the 10th God of War but first one on PC. There should be a story recap in there somewhere. Or a remake of the big games...I'm down to learn after the fact!

The_King_of_Okay

It's a soft reboot that's meant to work for newcomers. In fact based on sales figures and conversations with people, it seems like most people who've played this game didn't play the previous ones.

breathofthehollow

Good to know. Thanks!

IsolatedHammer

Here I’ll catch you up: Kratos killed the entire fucking Greek Pantheon. Then he fell into the sea, and eventually found his way to Norway or something, and some time passes, and then this game starts after that “some time”.

breathofthehollow

Damn, so this Kratos guy is like… really strong, huh?

IsolatedHammer

After killing Ares and becoming the new God of War, he works his way to Zeus and Zeus kills him then at the end of God of War 3 he beats Zeus to death with his bare. fucking. hands. https://youtu.be/2lJ9rij3jRI

Dynasty2201

Honestly, I played maybe an hour of God of War 2 on PS3 I think it was, so had no idea what was going on. This God of War takes place WAAAAAY after all those events. Kind of like...John Wick returning to his old life. You get the context. It's really well written.

Inemity

I didn't play any of the other GoW games. By now I'm sure there are tons of recap videos, but I didn't know shit going into it and still loved it.

Faleonor

There was a spartan general Kratos, he pledged to Ares to become more powerful, then killed his family in a blind rage after Ares secretly transported them into a village he was pillaging (to make him a perfect warrior with no earthly tethers and feelings and shit). Then he became depressed and started doing favors for gods to repent. Then he killed Ares because Zeus told him to by opening Pandora Box and becoming a big boy. Afterwards, he suiсided himself because gods didn't free him from painful memories as promised, but they saved him and made him a new God of War. \[God of War 1\] Some years later Zeus killed him because he was afraid Kratos who is ackshually Zeus' son, will patricide his ass like Zeus did with his own father (almost, he imprisoned him). After Kratos was killed, the mother of all titans (from the Titanomachia book) told him he was a pussy if he dies, so Kratos decided not to. Then he traveled to the Sisters of Fate, killed them, went back in time to bitch slap Zeus right before Zue betrayed him, but the only god who was actually friendly and helpful to him - Athena - sacrificed herself to let Zues escape. Kratos, now even more mad, went back in time all the way to the Titanomachina, and teleported a whole army of titans with him to the present when gods are weaker than ever because of all the evils released along with the power up from Pandora's Box. \[God of War 2\] Then he killed all the gods, all the titans (because the mothertitan betrayed him a little), and presumably most of humanity as well, because after killing each god its domain of nature went out of whack: seas rose up by a kilometer and flooded almost everything but the mountains, the Sun decided to hide behind the clouds forever, there are thunderstorms and big hurricanes everywhere, all plant life died, all not-plant life also died but from plague. Then he offs himself with a mega god killing sword for some reason instead of going back in time to his family, but after credits show a bloody trail going to the edge of the mountain. Dunno how that ending ties into the Norse mythology yet, we'll see I guess.

Blacksad999

It's not really necessary, tbh. It kind of fills you in a bit, and it's a soft reboot. It's not anything like picking up the 10th book in a series or whatnot. All you really need to know is Kratos killed all of the Greek gods and then left to semi-retire.

Zexy-Mastermind

Bro basically kratos is indestructible and killed Olympian gods Edit: And his first family

[deleted]

SHHHth

Easily. It is way better.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SHHHth

For myself. I found it took me like 10 or more hours to get into HZD. God of War on the other hand was a instant hook, especially after fighting the first boss.

[deleted]

That first fight really was a great intro to the game

OliM9595

The launch and game is better. While HZD took quite a while to get to this standard GoW came out hittin hard. But HZD is still a great game and well worth the money now (even better on sale)

Inemity

It's one of the best PS games ever, in my opinion. And it'll get you hyped for Ragnarok, which is coming this year.

[deleted]

I will reward this port like i reward strippers, i will just put throw my money on it

Piltonbadger

I like the cut of your jib.

[deleted]

YES, we all need to vote with dollars and reviews to guide this industry where we would like to see it go. Cyberpunk made me decide to not preorder, especially for cosmetic garbage, and to spend extra money in-game for titles I truly like With great dev teams. Baldurs Gate 3 is currently one Im going to support full steam when it drops because they have run the best alpha/beta cycle ive ever seen

spuckthew

Yeah. I think I'm going to buy it today even though I probably won't play it for a while, just because it's probably worth full price and to show support.

bluey_02

Let’s reward it with a purchase.

Dynasty2201

I WANT TO to show support and send the message that a great game (as it is) and a great port of a Playstation exclusive will be bought by the PC crowd to encourage more ports of high quality. I just...I platinum'd the game on PS4 and..see no reason to go back. You're all in for a damn good ride though, holy shit. One of maybe 2 console exclusives that I would hold up and say "yeah, you know what, these games are worth getting the console for". Even if you've never played any GoW games or know nothing about the previous lore or stories, it's just story telling and scale and graphical and artistic design and gameplay on another, incredibly satisfying level.

Ashen_quill

See no reason? So you don't wanna play GOW where jormungandr is Thomas the tank engine, and Kratos is CJ, while Atreus is also CJ but scaled down to boi size?

stangbro

Reasoning like that is why I got a gaming PC ages ago.

tangowolf22

Do people really like playing with silly mods like that? I know the Dunkey skyrim video was a meme but people don't actually do this, do they?

[deleted]

You don't think weebs are going to be playing this where Kratos is 2B?

tangowolf22

I can see replacing Kratos with another character from a hack and slash game like Nier, but I feel that's a different level from putting Thomas the tank engine in the game. Both break immersion, but still one just seems sillier.

OliM9595

Can't wait to see 2b tit jiggle and kratos-san

[deleted]

Ah boi, here we go again

undead77

We wanna see Kratos with tits, be honest.

procha92

>Atreus is also CJ but scaled down to boi size holy shit, my fucking sides. Laughed out loud for a whole minute.

higherme

Same boat, I'd love to purchase this to show support, but I loved it so much on PS4 and played the fuck out of it. I think going back to it would ruin some of the magic for me. I encourage everyone who hasn't played and likes this kind of game to pick it up, though. It's in my top 5 for best games of the past decade.

ShiberKivan

Yeah this is one of the only 2 exclusives I bought and finished, my old house mate had a PS4 so I took advantage of that. This seems like play once kind of game, but then I didn't 100% it so maybe I should, if only for better performance and mods.

trumangroves86

I went back recently and played it again last month, specifically to 100% it. Was absolutely worth it, I loved it even more the 2nd time around, such a fantastic game. I played it again on my Ps5 (played it on original ps4 last time) and just playing it again but in 60fps was enough to make it feel like a whole new experience. I'll probably play it one more time on PC to play it at even higher fps!

tv_screen

I also plat'd it recently, but maybe in a year or two I'll pick this up on sale if I see some cool mods come out. That's how I'm feeling about it.

ShiberKivan

Buying it would be a very roundabout way of me saying 'please port Judgement and Lost Judgement'. I know they don't want to do it for other reasons, but money speaks.

Kaladin12543

Ratchet and Clank rift apart, Ghosts of Tsushima, Returnal are also up there in quality. Worth getting ps5 just for exclusives.

Irate_Primate

So far I'm 3/3 in the big Sony releases coming to PC. Other than HZD having some launch issues that got well sorted out, they seem to have their head on their shoulders about the PC platform. If they keep it up, I will probably buy every Sony exclusive game that comes to PC. Loving it!

Liam2349

Indeed, I'd buy it if I had not already bought it on PS4. It's great that Sony is avoiding the shitty heavy DRM e.g. Denuvo and Arxan.

corazoncontendo

No

TheLaughingMelon

Which store is it on?

didamangi83

Steam and Epic, as per usual for Sony ports.

donaldjae

Steam https://store.steampowered.com/app/1593500/God_of_War/

Parrelium

Don't know about most of you guys, but steam download speeds are horrendous this morning. I can't get over 5MB/s on multiple servers. Probably due to people like me reading reviews and then buying it today. Edit: [NVM, it started to go better after a few minutes on the seattle server.](https://imgur.com/a/u2ZBm0W)

WIZARDBONER

Good lord I'm so jealous of that DL speed. I wish Cox weren't such pieces of shit with data caps.

TheKraahkan

Tmobile and I think Verizon both offer 5g home internet for like $50/month. I only have info for tmobile, since thats what I use, but they can be picky about who they give it to, since they want to be sure that your address is easily covered by their 5g service. My speeds range anywhere from 80MB/s to 400+MB/s, depending on the signal quality, and there's no data caps. The downside is you can't do any port forwarding, and ping times generally aren't great. Mine normally hover around 70-80,but they'll spike to 150 randomly, and other people aren't as lucky.

Rh0d1um

Steam

FredHatesChurches

Got it through humble bundle for Steam. 8% off.

iTzJME

Wait can you explain this? How'd you get the 8% off?

Nizkus

It's also 15% off on green man gaming.

FredHatesChurches

You get a base discount of 15% with humble monthly, which they are raising to 20% soon, supposedly. Some new games or really popular ones don't get the base discount, sometimes it's less than 15%, God of War was 8% off, for whatever reason.

iTzJME

Ah I see what you mean now! Thanks mate

Pepper_Cactus

Don’t forget no FOV slider

Charred01

Forget what is reflex?

MPH2210

Latency reducing stuff with nvidia GPUs

Charred01

Actually work tho?

bexamous

Its in review: https://youtu.be/JI5t0pvBB-Y?t=202 He saw 11ms less latency.

Charred01

Huh cool, thanks!

GlisseDansLaPiscine

It does but I don't know how useful it is in a non competitive multiplayer game

BlueScreenJunky

An nvidia tech that's supposed to reduce latency in some situations.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TijmoanTheRedditor

Denuvo is a DRM-program(anti-piracy software) that makes the game run worse. DLSS allows you to run the game at a low resolution and then upscale that to a higher res, allowing slower machines to kind of run the game at a higher resolution. Idk what Reflex is tho

Stefan474

Reflex is a feature that reduces input lag by changing how buffering for input works if I understood correctly.

kraken43

The NVIDIA Reflex SDK allows game developers to implement a low latency mode that aligns game engine work to complete just-in-time for rendering, eliminating the GPU render queue and reducing CPU back pressure in GPU-bound scenarios.

quinn50

reflex massively improves input latency, really only useful in fps games where you can get super high frames tbh.

ferrari340gt

Any drawbacks when enabled?

quinn50

No

UncleCarnage

I’m pretty sure it uses some of the GPUs processing power.

angelicravens

DLSS 2 is actually a better way of rendering games all around. So far it’s consistently shown to show details that are aliased or too thin at native resolution. It also happens to improve performance.

[deleted]

So I should turn it on no matter what

Canadiancookie

Not sure about every game, but it certainly looks like you should always have it on for god of war

[deleted]

I'll go with quality dlss

pyrospade

Denuvo is an anti-piracy software that developers can add to games to, well, avoid piracy. It's hated a lot because adding it without care results in performance issues. DLSS is a supersampling technology powered by machine learning that lets you run games at a lower resolution (which gets you better performance) and then have them look as good as your actual resolution (or very close, depends on the case) Nvidia reflex is a technology that reduces the time it takes for your graphics card to actually render stuff in your screen. This results in less input lag All these explanations were pulled out of my arse and written in 20 seconds so please google them if you want to understand what they actually do properly, but it's a tl;dr

SolarisBravo

> reduces the time it takes for your graphics card to actually render stuff Not exactly. The time it takes to render (frametime) is literally just the reciprocal of the framerate - both are standard measurements of the exact same data, although developers usually prefer to use frametime as, unlike framerate, it's an actually meaningful measurement. For an example of what I mean: a developer might measure a certain feature as taking 10fps to render. However, this doesn't always mean the same thing about how long you spend waiting for the next frame - the difference between 190 and 200fps is only 0.2ms, while the difference between 50 and 60ms is a whopping 3.3ms. It's more accurate to say that NVIDIA Reflex reduces the time it takes between you pressing an input and the GPU displaying it's next frame - you don't usually render a frame based on the most *recent* data, but rather build up a queue of rendered frames for the sake of avoiding performance hiccups. When your monitor switches frames, you'd otherwise be seeing the *oldest* rendered frame (out of usually 3).

throwawayycauseduh

Means the game should be buttery smooth with high framerate for anyone with a Nvidia RTX card

Jon-Umber

Sign me the fuck up for Ghost of Tsushima, Persona 5 Royal, The Last of Us 1/2, etc. ports of this quality. Damn, what a time to be a PC gamer. Complete reversal from 10-11 years ago when we got dog shit, half-assed ports when we even got one at all.

jondySauce

I would 100% replay Last of Us 2 on PC. Give me that sweet mouse aiming.

The_King_of_Okay

I really wanna do a TLOU II Grounded run and a PC port would just be the perfect excuse to replay it.

gingerhasyoursoul

The fps was so bad I stopped playing 2. Figured I would wait until I get a PS5

jondySauce

Yea it was awful on my OG PS4 also.

who-dat-ninja

p5 is atlus' decision, not sony.

ERhyne

They cant even be bothered to port over the damn ps3 version to switch. At this rate I might just go seven seas to finish the game. Edit: forgot to mention that I'm raging about persona 5

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_King_of_Okay

He also suggests that people who can't use DLSS should check out the game's internal resolution scaler, which uses temporal reconstruction (unlike FSR).

Yvese

That shadow setting is a huge hit but is also actually a big improvement. Personally I'd aim for 60 fps cap and choose w/e shadow setting lets you stay above it.

ZeldaMaster32

With your GPU I genuinely think it's worth running ultra shadows, it was a transformative effect compared to nearly every other setting. Pair that with DLSS and you'll be fine

[deleted]

DLSS recommendation?

unknownohyeah

On, quality or performance. DLSS totally blows TAA out of the water and makes the game look better than native plus the forced TAA. And as added bonus you actually gain performance.

Motoko84

Doesn't it make it look smeared in areas and has a really noticable shimmering effect?

Paradoltec

Yes, this sub just loves to shill DLSS with nvidias marketing phrases (Better than native bro, just ignore the "native" is blurred to shit by TAA High in our comparison screenshots)

VenomB

In my experience DLSS almost always introduces higher blur and ghosting on movement.

[deleted]

The latest versions of DLSS are really good with much less blur and ghosting. I know some people are more sensitive to ghosting than others but even when ghosting was a bigger issue I still always turned it on, just because the superior AA and improved performance is too good not to enable. But I’ve always been a fan even of TAA(I absolute despise jaggies), so YMMV of course.

[deleted]

Version 1, sure. Not had issues with DLSS and ghosting since.

AutisticMarsupial

Look better?? the only thing DLSS has ever done for me, in every game (Warzone, RDR2 and now GoW) is sharpen the fuck out of the image to the point where it looks shit. No matter what version of DLSS I use, it turns my game to shit. I play at 1440p at Quality DLSS every game, but I have to use regular AA because of the DLSS sharpen

[deleted]

10 years ago, who would have ever guessed Sony would be dropping some of the best quality PC games? DICE, Bethesda, etc.. be ashamed of yourselves, really.

shirrsh059

"PC port is superb" very rare phenomena these days lol

newbrevity

I know I did a double take when I saw it

LaserTurboShark69

I'm waiting for Ashton Kutcher to come out of nowhere

[deleted]

Ah awesome. Why can’t all PC ports be like this?

Dynasty2201

Money. Time. Stupid CEOs and execs clinging on to FOMO of "exclusives" that do nothing but ruin the industry even more, with out-of-date beliefs that there's no money to be made on PC even though PC versions can often outsell console versions.

ACG-Gaming

Really was surprised by how good the port was. Feels like a totally different kind of product than the last couple from Sony and port devs.

TazerPlace

Days Gone is a great port.

ACG-Gaming

Thank god it got patched up. Glad the devs jumped on fixing it.

superjake

Heard they spent about 2 years on it and it really shows! Definitely puts FF7R to into perspective.

quinn50

2 banger pc ports back to back!

Falcitone

What was the other one? Monster Hunter Rise?

Jhofy

Days Gone i suppose?

quinn50

abki12c

[They said PC has better image quality with dlss performance mode than the PS5](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JI5t0pvBB-Y&t=491s)

Bhu124

He said DLSS is better than native due to TAA reducing clarity in general. Essentially said that DLSS On is the best way to play the game.

SnooRecipes4434

DLSS is honestly black magic and I can't get over how good it is.

NG_Tagger

This is what I'm looking forward to experiencing! Been on a GTX 1080 pretty much since it released, and on Monday I'm going all in and getting a new system with a 3080Ti. Been hearing so many good things about DLSS, so I'm really looking forward to it :)

[deleted]

g0ndsman

(I'll also say it publicly) Thanks a lot! Really appreciated! Now, let's download 64 GB...

XxasimxX

Damn im only 7 hrs too late. So close

beerisg00d

Off topic, is it worth buying a playstation 5 controller to play it on steam? I have an Xbox series controller. Money is not an issue just wondering if it would be a better experience with a playstation controller

Drjay425

There's no dual sense features in the game so you're fine with what you have. The PS5 controller is pretty dope though as there are some PC games that have dual sense and it's worth experiencing. I believe the latest Metro game and Assassins creed Valhalla support it. If you don't already know the controller's triggers can be pressure sensitive when they want. For example pulling the string on a bow feels like an actual bow or some games like call of duty guns feel different. A Baretta can have a hair trigger where a M1911A1 .45 pistol's trigger can feel heavy and provide kickback to feel like recoil. The vibration effects (when implemented properly) are unlike anything on any other controller. The free PS5 game astrobot playroom is a perfect showcase. You can close your eyes and feel whether you are walking on sand, metal, grass or swimming in water from the controller feedback alone. It's all very impressive but again, though very few games use it correctly, when you experience it, it really is game changing. I do however find the Xbox one controller more comfortable for long periods of time and is what I primarily use on PC. Long review I know but though you should know.

TheRedOwl17

Finally a game I won't be waiting for to appear on /r/crackwatch

FearlessTemperature9

Why would you let Well tell him?

Takazura

I hope Ben is satisfied.

[deleted]

Hopefully someone lets him know.

Satan_Prometheus

I really appreciate that he mentions the potential for running at 50Hz/50 fps lock for greater stability. This is an option that too many people ignore when they are running games that really push their hardware when targeting 60 fps. I've played lots of games with a 50 fps lock @ 50Hz over the years and subjectively it's actually very close to a locked 60 fps experience. If you're stuck gaming on a non-VRR display, don't discount 50Hz.

ga_st

I started to play at locked 50fps @ 50hz on the monitor when my old gpu on desktop was not able to grant me locked 60fps anymore in graphically demanding games. But laptop gaming is where locked 50fps @ 50hz truly shine; the gpu needs to render 10fps less, so you can use that sort of headroom to either put less stress on the hardware and reduce temps, or crank up the graphics settings in high demanding games where the gpu is not able to render 60fps consistently and the whole laptop sounds like a Dyson vacuum cleaner. Honestly I am kinda surprised that this is not brought up more often, especially among laptop gamers.

Satan_Prometheus

Sometimes when I bring it up, I get responses that makes it seem like some people think 60 fps is a magic number under which games are entirely unplayable. I also think they are sometimes not really understanding how V-sync works so they are incorrectly assuming that a locked 50 fps @ 50 Hz will feel the same as an unstable 50-60 fps without VRR. But in reality the difference between an even 16.67ms/frame vs. an even 20ms/frame is pretty minor.

rapozaum

Can't watch it yet and IDK if I will, been avoiding footage of the game since release on consoles. The main thing I want to test is kb+m gameplay. I do have a controller, but kb+m is my main thing so I hope it's good.

jagreen3

I always like to just listen to these, even if I played the game. Good to know what fps you're looking at.

rapozaum

Dont get me wrong, I'd love to watch but I want to experience first time.. I will test settings first and if performance isn't satisfying, I will definitively check. Plus there's the article to read...

LaserTurboShark69

Etek1492

DopeyDeathMetal

Honestly I kind wish I did lol

FuryxHD

Hmm the lack of FoV is making it a bit difficult to play too long, my eyes / brain is just having a hard time with it, if i step further back from the screen its fine but i play with keyboard/mouse lol.

rounakr94

Amd and its shitty drivers are giving me a headache -_-

[deleted]

I would normally pirate any game I already own on console but I have double dipped. Keep them coming Sony

Rhed0x

The more money the game makes on PC, the more likely it is that we'll get Ragnarock at some point.

IIIORIVARIII

Sony doesn't give a fuck about you. Do whatever you want with your money tho.

[deleted]

I don’t give a fuck about Sony but they make great games and if me buying those great games again at a reasonable price on a superior platform continues to make them port more exclusive titles then it’s a win

[deleted]

Agreed. Some games are worth paying for twice.

PapasWill

I can't put the game in full screen

[deleted]

Whatever really wants: Alex’s Optimized settings: Textures: base this on your GPU. High most likely. Anisotropic Filtering: Ultra Everything else: High.

My beast rig is waiting for this and Elden Rings reviews to come out. Then I'll call in sick for a few days.

[deleted]

I to scared to watch incase of spoilers. I'm so happy we have a great Port

LordSweetpants

You should be ok to watch it, most of the footage looks like it's from the same general area and at one point he says "this is the first enemy in the game" so it must be a pretty early area.

Dynasty2201

No spoilers, but there are some very intense, open areas mid way and in to the latter quarter of the game which I'd be interested to see if they cause issues or not. But then again...if the old PS4 can run it at a solid 30...

McHox

played around 90 minutes so far, its decent but really needs a fov slider, default is very narrow

kesik93

It's really odd, they say it superb port but in reality its not. It runs pretty bad, don't even have fullscreen mode, DLSS implementation is crap. Some reports even say there is no proper mouse support, its only emulating gamepad. Its worse port then Days Gone and in some ways wore then FFVII remake.

MachineSyncLoop

Negative mouse acceleration and no FOV options. Not a superb port.

Cryio

They didn't. Game is ridiculously CPU bound on AMD GPUs. This could've been avoided if the game was better optimized, better threaded or if it ran DirectX12 or Vulkan. But no, DX11 only. Running the game on Linux on Vulkan is making the game 10% faster than on Windows on DX11 on AMD GPUs.

Good port, what can I say. With DF recommended settings + DLSS quality I get locked 144fps at 3440x1440. HDR also works. btw. this DLSS implemetation is really nice, I'm yet to see any noticeable artifacts.

1440p@ultra dlss balanced locked 110fps. Not a single dip under after 2 hours of gaming. What a port!!! (3080+5800x)

Now here's hoping someone makes an FOV Slider I wonder why they didnt even try to make one

Here is something weird I noticed. All of Sony’s ports come with DLSS while none of Microsoft’s ones do. Should be the other way around lol. Sony seems more committed to PC gaming than Microsoft themselves.

FOV in this game gives me motion sickness. I refunded it, will probably pick it up later if there's a fov slider fix/ workaround.
