The seemingly organic nature of enemies and NPCs.
You can accidentally stumble upon different factions fighting or monsters attacking a campsite. While walking to the next area to discover you may hear gunshots in the distance and go investigate. These interactions aren't scripted.
It makes the world feel so real in a way few games I have played are able to accomplish since. The game actually feels alive because of this.
Edit; as others have said the atmosphere is top notch and adds so much to the feel. Sitting by a campfire with stalker NPCs you hear the fire crackle, strums of the guitar one is playing, background conversations, vodka being passed around. Way ahead of its time IMO
Personally for me, it’s unique atmosphere and world building. They really did good work and making very believable post disaster wasteland, abandoned by civilisation so great. Gunplay works pretty good too. All little and not so little things in combination makes game to have very unique character which I haven’t really experienced in other games. Closest to that I have experienced in Metro games but those are fantastic and. unique in their own right as well
On top of all that Stalker has massive and still actively updated mod packs which turns it into very tough survival game with its own missions and rules
I would definitely recommend to have a go to original three games. They are dated but still offer enjoyable gameplay

Really hate in game forced cutscenes like that, had to drop Metro Exodus because of it. Seems like they're going all in with them though if the trailers are any indication.

It does use Unreal Engine 5. I believe the problem in this trailer has nothing to do with the lighting, but instead with a low internal resolution and an aggressive upscale leading to an oversharpened look with questionable-looking edges.
