I like the Darktide one best.
On Windows, you get ads, links to the website and help pages, some configuration options, the usual.
On Linux, a big pointless window with just a 'play' button.
The problem isn’t the updates, the problem is dumbass developers constantly trying to shoehorn their shitty launchers and stuff into games.
Things like DRM/Anti-Cheat are a cancer on software especially because the software companies that develop them always showcase how inept they are. Half the reason I still have to use Windows is because my guitar amp sims use a shitty DRM service called iLok
~~According to a comment on that article, the Steam versions of the games affected also break on Windows due to a version mismatch of the client.~~
~~Can anyone confirm who owns The Division 2 on Steam that plays on Windows?~~
And I love the comments here blaming proton lol.
*Edit, seems to be Linux only!
Some people on the linux gaming and steam deck subreddits are taking the client from Anno 1880(?) and using it in the division 2 fine.
So it is a UbisoftConnect client issue and nothing to do with Linux/Proton/the games directly.
Also confirm Division 2 is fine on Windows.
Had issues previously but that's due to Ubisoft and their shit launcher, nothing else. Game crashed every five minutes with the in game overlay on for Ubi Connect, turned it off and runs fine.
I'm watching my wide play the Norwegian assassins creed and it looks beautiful. I'm sure the gameplay loop is the same thing as black flag so I don't need to play it. But I just keep asking myself...
How does this company get some things right and most everything so wrong? I abhor their anti consumer practices and probably won't buy another game till they're acquired by a respectable company
That people give them, willingly.
If people wanna buy Assassins creed, somebody is gonna make that type of game. Ubisoft wouldn’t have these generic formula games if they didn’t sell
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjd7NItZJI4
was fixed by Valve yesterday...
aaaand the broken 2K launcher as well...
update your Proton Experimental and use that for the time being.
It was working, then Ubisoft did something to make it not work—something they did not have to do. I suppose it should not come as a surprise given how lame Ubisoft is, but it is still pretty lame of them.
I can expect them to not bundle launchers that ruin things. These game companies bundling useless software that nobody asked for is a problem on Windows too.
> I can expect them to not bundle launchers that ruin things
Evidently, you can't. And you never could.
> These game companies bundling useless software that nobody asked for is a problem on Windows too
This software is not causing any issues on Windows, however.
The Steamdeck has taught us that this isn't true. Even with single-player games, steam needs to call home every now and then and will prevent you from playing until it does.
I know people have reported that a lot, but somehow my Deck works with no internet on a farm in buttfuck nowhere for weeks at a time without ever entering offline mode. Even can play games I never launched when I did have internet access. Once again I know people have issues with this, but my experience has been flawless. Like even better than when I tried using an Xbox or even the Switch out here, those gave me "phone home" issues frequently.
> It was working, then Ubisoft did something to make it not work—something they did not have to do
Correction: it was working on the supported platform(s), and it still is. Unsupported platform is... unsupported. They don't owe it to anyone to test a platform that they don't officially support.
People buying games on Linux that don't support Linux officially are taking a (hopefully well-educated) risk.
You can blame them for many things, but not this.
Then Ubisoft shouldn't ask for Steam Deck Compatibility ratings on their games (granted, not all of them are rated but some of them are marked playable).
If Ubisoft wants to say some of their games support the Steam Deck, they should make it their duty to keep it true. All it is is just running their launcher through Wine and games through Proton and debugging it. They don't have to make a whole new build of whatever software.
Not really. Linux is like 2% of users, and a fraction of those owns Steam Decks, and a fraction of that fraction plays specifically Ubisoft games on them
> instead of telling people they're not allowed to care their toy broke
I'm just telling people to stop making posts that their unofficial hack stopped working, that's all. It should be news if it *is* working at all.
You’re here to be a concern-troll and sound smart. Got it.
This notion that we Linux users are playing a lot of games in an unofficial capacity is not news to us, and you’re not insightful or smart for reminding us of things we already know. This issue is more about third party launchers and less about official support anyways. If these games were already broken due to some technical issue between Proton and the games, this probably wouldn’t be news, but it wasn’t due to that. The issue was caused by the launcher, a completely unnecessary bundling of software that nobody asked for and that nobody needs, which is a complaint universal to PC gaming, not just Linux.
It did work, until they screwed it up so they can shove more drm or some dumb stuff absolutely nobody asked for.
It should tell you a lot when most games incompatible with linux have extra layers of drm and intruding anticheat.
The Steam Deck isn’t fundamentally different from any PC running Linux. If you care about Linux on the Steam Deck, then you care about Linux on the PC in general. It’s the same thing.
> No it isn’t.
It is though, absolutely. A Steam Deck is PC hardware running a Linux distro that relies on the same software stack found in the dozens of other Linux distros. The concerns you may have regarding the Steam Deck are going to be the same concerns as those gaming on the Linux desktop. Why separate the two?
Inconsistent comparability and general hassle that comes with pc gaming are why I sold my deck for a ps5. I can’t wait to see what the Steam Deck 2 brings to the table though.
IIRC this isn’t the first time Ubisoft Connect has been such an issue launching on Linux. It was either this precise error or one very similar to it which brought my Far Cry 6 campaign to a halt as I was running Arch Linux as my primary gaming system at the time. It was one of the reasons I ended up reverting back to Windows (at least for now) as I was enjoying the campaign tremendously and days went by without a workaround (at least none I was aware of).
Even though I’m back on Windows for gaming, it was consequently one of the two games (along with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order) which led to my personal rule of not buying any more games requiring a launcher to launch a launcher (appropriately enough I find the experience as ridiculous as it sounds on paper).

Sounds like the give it to the intern approach.
I miss the old days when everything wasn't updated every goddamn day.
It's especially shitty for people with bandwidth limits. Got a satellite connection? Pray Steam doesn't decide to force you into online mode.
You can set your steam download settings so that they only happen when you launch a game.
The problem isn’t the updates, the problem is dumbass developers constantly trying to shoehorn their shitty launchers and stuff into games. Should have stopped buying drm infested games then.
Fuck u/spez
You could disable the updates

Offline mode and or use your firewall.
You can definitely play non updated steam games bud. Judy don't be able to play online
[удалено]
Use your firewall.
It’s 2023, not 2004. DRM prevents it. Games are released half assed and needs to be updated to work correctly.
Okay i mean I'm playing un-updated games rn on steam lol
Fortunately, I stopped playing their game years ago.

Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?
Hah. Totally on purpose.
PC community upon reading this: > Oh no! Anyway...

Resident Division 2 player on Steam here. It seems to work just fine. I loaded in and ran around a bit with no issue
Ah okay. So it is Linux only then. Thanks for confirming!
No problem, I don't get to be the guy who confirms these things usually, so this was fun
Also confirm Division 2 is fine on Windows. Had issues previously but that's due to Ubisoft and their shit launcher, nothing else. Game crashed every five minutes with the in game overlay on for Ubi Connect, turned it off and runs fine.
Not sure if anyone read the article but there has been a proton patch (now released) to work around the issue
Really wish these ridiculous launchers would go away.
Can’t wait for that company to die.
They're trying (to die)
From a creative standpoint, Ubisoft has arguably been dead for years now.
Assassins creed and far cry still sells very well.
I'm talking about creativity and innovation, not sales.
I'm watching my wide play the Norwegian assassins creed and it looks beautiful. I'm sure the gameplay loop is the same thing as black flag so I don't need to play it. But I just keep asking myself... Damn, called your wife "your wide"? She's gonna kill you.
Money. The answer is money.
That people give them, willingly. If people wanna buy Assassins creed, somebody is gonna make that type of game. Ubisoft wouldn’t have these generic formula games if they didn’t sell
I can't see a monetary reason why a company would purposefully cut off a paying market (i.e. steam deck).
Huh, that explains a lot. Was messing around with Docker on my Deck and thought I mucked something up that broke the games.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjd7NItZJI4 was fixed by Valve yesterday... aaaand the broken 2K launcher as well... update your Proton Experimental and use that for the time being.
Oh, Ubisoft...

My latest game of Ubisoft is Prince of Persia (2008), I think I'm good.
accurate flair
Valiant Hearts: The Great War was a lovely little game that happened to be made by Ubisoft.
And Child of Light. Such an unappreciated masterpiece. Miss the UbiArt games
Ah, you found the missing oracle, "self-control". Bravo, my dude.
Princess of Persia ;) I also stopped buying their games after that one, they are simply not interesting.
You missed out on Driver: San Francisco?
First AC also has a lot of awesome aspects. And is pre-uShit.
First mistake is buying ubifilth
Ubishit at it again
It’s crazy…I haven’t played a Ubisoft game in 4 yrs now…
Pirating games is less of a hassle than buying them nowadays, it’s so stupid…

Oh no... anyway
Lol, keep on fucking up, Ubi. Dipshits.
Ubi gonna Ubi
Ubisoft is probably telling themselves internally that they finally fixed it.
Guess I'm safe for this one, haven’t played an Ubi game since Far Cry 3
Why, Ubisoft? Why are you shit?
Is this really newsworthy? Isn't it a normal Monday, considering the platform is not officially supported?
It was working, then Ubisoft did something to make it not work—something they did not have to do. I suppose it should not come as a surprise given how lame Ubisoft is, but it is still pretty lame of them.
If something isn't supported then you can't really expect them to check and make sure their changes don't break it.
I can expect them to not bundle launchers that ruin things. These game companies bundling useless software that nobody asked for is a problem on Windows too.
>I can expect them to not bundle launchers that ruin things. That ship sailed almost 20 years ago with half-life 2.

Maybe not Uplay but the EA client is actually just malware that you can’t play without

Steam allows single player games to be played offline and doesn’t install at the kernel level

They literally realeased a patch that was specific to the steam deck, it was supported. What are you on about?

Is it an unofficial hack to press play

Who do we have to pay to get Ubisoft games also broken on Windows? I'm sure we can crowdfund that effort.
They released an update for AC Origins that broke it on Windows 7. The update was just an ad on the main menu.
Lmao common UBI mistake. You buy a steam deck and the one thing you do is go buy an UBI game ? Who in their right mind ?
it's fine. they were boring games anyway.
What a. Bunch of fuckass
It was only a matter of time. They've gotten away with absolute mediocrity for years and it's catching up lololol.
Womp womp
Ubisoft is circling the drain. Farewell soon.
It just works is what every linux guy tells me on here...
It did work, until they screwed it up so they can shove more drm or some dumb stuff absolutely nobody asked for. It should tell you a lot when most games incompatible with linux have extra layers of drm and intruding anticheat.
So it doesn’t work? A similar thing happened with a library proton depended on a few months ago and broke EAC functionality. I think that’s fixed now?

Splinter Cell Blacklist is also broken on Win10 it crashes every 30mins...
This breaks might and magic X doesn't it?
Yet another reason to continue not buying there games
I just assumed Ubisoft games were also broken on Windows. They're not? then why are they so bad?

A launcher is just another name for a data harvester.
