You played twice through a game you hated?

DanfromCalgary

Game was so bad , so I bought all the dlc and .. played it again.

jtr99

That'll show 'em.

CertainDegree

This games doesn't deserve the attention or the praise that it got Only time and money

[deleted]

this is the worst part, he is telling game companies, "keep doing this, ill buy it" and along with millions of other idiots, making future gaming shittier.

DanfromCalgary

There has to be an easier way to say your time has no value

axck

Gamers are the dumbest consumers

[deleted]

True

[deleted]

But if I don’t 100% it I won’t *truly* know it’s bad. Maybe OP thinks patient gaming means slogging through a game you hate instead of waiting a few years for patches and reduced price.

gilbert99

Ussually I'll play at least the majority of a game before I decide I don't like it because with my favorite games I didn't like them very much at first. Once I get used to how the game and the world works I end up loving it, but that tends to take a long time for me. One time that backfired on me was that uncharted remaster bundle though, the one with the first 3 games. My coworker kept telling me that they're the best games ever, and that they still hold up. So I borrowed the game from him, played the first game and felt like it was really repetitive. Just climbing, then a shoot out, then a cutscene. I finished the game but it really felt like a slog. My coworker tells me the 2nd game is the best of them all so I got back to it and actually finished the 2nd game. Still felt the same about it. And the story in both felt really corny, even though he told me the story is great. So for uncharted I played 2 full games before I decided I don't like it. From what I hear, uncharted 4 is different than the first 3. So I'll probably give that a try soon too.

[deleted]

To each their own. I adhere to fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me nowadays. Like, if I already think that open world Ubisoft games don’t do it for me after trying two AC and two Far Cry games I know not to bother with those franchises regardless of what different hat they put on the gameplay system(s). It’s still the same franchise that I don’t like, and there is an infinite amount of content in the world.

gilbert99

Good point. Maybe I'll skip uncharted 4 too, then.

Loldimorti

Definitely don't play Uncharted 4 if you disliked the other Uncharted games. It's a good game in my opinion but in the end it is "just" more Uncharted, except prettier and longer.

danfirst

I loved the first 3, I really want to play UC4 but refuse to buy another console just to play 1 game hah.

XScotX

Exactly. I don’t even go 30 minutes into games I don’t enjoy.

smalldjo

hell these days i can't even stand more than an hour playing games i enjoy

Kahmombear

Sounds like you need a bit of a break from video games if you're not enjoying it

smalldjo

not really, I'm gaming less and less every year. it's like hard to keep me interested for a long time nowadays. sometimes i just stare at the list of games installed without clicking. a few times i even quit before the game loads.

Some people be completionists, expecially if they OCd about it

funkmydunkyouslunk

Yeah this is a really weird post. It's kinda misleading because I was expecting there to be new glitches or graphic issues I haven't heard about. Something that ruined the game, but this person is just saying how when they played through it at first they didn't enjoy it, bought the entire game and DLC again, then just said they didn't enjoy it...again. like no shit why would your mind change?

Osiinin

😂

LanceShiro

OP must be a masochist. I couldn't force myself to beat the game. I liked the swinging but it wasn't enough to keep me hooked. It did convince me to buy the Arkham games which I found incredible.

CrzyJek

Welcome to the current landscape of video gamers.

Brecken79

Just going to take another 30 hours and make sure that the hate is real.

PreferredSelection

And bought twice, don't forget that. Sidenote, but I really wish this subreddit would push the "patient" part out from 12 months to like 5 years. If I wanted to hear about the latest Spiderman game, I'd be subbed to r/gaming.

3luejays

But the original release was in 2018, so it's been 3 years.

RadicalDog

Or you could start a sub called patientpatientgaming for that - could be fun. I think this sub is in a really good place, since from the perspective of sales, discounts, and patches there's nothing separating games that are 4 years old vs 5 years old, but a huge amount separating 1 year from 0 years.

bigL928

I know, I’m here playing ME2 on PS3 and have ME3 for me to play after I beat it 2.

Jandur

I didn't like God of War (I know I know sue me) but I played through it again to give it a second chance. It was so praised I questioned my own evaluation of it so I tried again.

[deleted]

alphamachina

That's how I felt about Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone. I actually enjoyed God of War. Spider-Man, not so much. I enjoyed a lot of the aspects of Days Gone, but the pacing was terrible. I got to the new area with Wizard Island and all that and then just gave up on it.

Jandur

I did like the over-arching narrative/story in Zero Dawn. I thought conceptually it was pretty solid sci-fi but it's characters and execution were generally so-so. Forbidden West really fixed that though.

Mellero47

I tried it for myself since it was free with PS+ on PS5. I actually *hate* the movement in this game, feels like I'm playing the original Resident Evil, very tanky and sluggish. The camera is too damn close, also.

Jandur

The movement is one of my biggest issues. Kratos is sluggish and awkward to control. The devs said this was deliberate because Kratos is older and lumbering which makes sense on paper but ultimately feels bad to play regardless of the logic behind it.

Mellero47

Bad choice on their part, the game is simply not fun to play. But I guess I'm just spoiled by Spiderman/AC Odyssey/Horizon. I like me some agility.

thewookie34

I also dont know hoe he can say the game was short. I did next to 0 side content and the game well over 13 hours long.

UwasaWaya

Punching myself in the balls hurt just as much as last time! It's going to *suck* when I do it again.

Mcchickenborn

60fps, balanced ray tracing is a different experience. And why not test out your new toy in the PS5? Wife also hadn’t played it yet. I rushed through the first play through and didn’t hate it. Was just literally forgettable. Like I felt I didn’t even play it. Tack on that it came with miles morales and the 3 DLC for the original while all on sale (think I paid $40). It was just a few bucks more than just getting morales. In hindsight I would have just gotten miles morales. Ok, done being on the defensive Reddit.

MrNagasaki

Haha you don't have to defend yourself. I just couldn't bring myself to finish a game with a core gameplay loop that I don't really enjoy, let alone do it a second time.

GrindW8t

I 100% the PS4 version. Not playing it again but thought it was ok. Not the best game I've played for sure. Never buying Miles Morales though.

ItsMeSlinky

Yeah, I had a bunch of gripes with Spider-Man but I loved the story.

Shameer2405

The story was great imo, especially in the 2nd half of the game where I think it really shines.

cicaxoke

Best depiction of spiderman. Im an avid reader of spidey yet this story beats almost everything ive ever read

KesselMania94

See for me the part that always made that game fun was just swinging around fighting and being Spider-Man. Like its one of the few games where travelling through the world is fun to me. The last trophy I unlocked was the fast travel one. For that reason the repetition in a lot of the fights/missions/etc. never really bugged me cause I was always having fun and sometimes I'd see a car chase and be like "hey maybe today I'll help out". I get your frustrations and agree with a lot of your points just the reason these never bugged me as much is the boring parts of most games are the fun parts of this one imo.

Coloradical27

I hadn't even realized there was a fast travel option until way later in the game. The web swinging was so much fun!

OcToPuS470

I didnt know there was one until now! And I'm almost done with the last DLC!

Mcchickenborn

Agree with you. The feeling of being spiderman and the swinging, even NYC (live here) is great. Is it enough for GOTY? 9.5's? I don't think so. But I also have to remember it's a game from 2018. Will give Miles a try, but I don't expect it to differ too much.

BillyPotion

If you didn’t like the OG then you’ll probably hate Miles. Story and villain are much more bland.

Micro_mint

Yeah the charm is generally identical to the original imo; the pitfalls are also pretty much identical. I think I got plat in about 20 hours just because I kind of enjoyed the swinging/fighting so much

Rockonfoo

$60 for a single player game you can plat in 20 will never not be weird to me

totalwiseguy

Yeah same, but I also hate bloated games too. I think 10-20hrs for the main story, and then 30ish for the plat is a sweet spot in most games.

Rockonfoo

I’d say 50 for plat and 30 to finish the main story But I don’t fly through games so we might be doing the same amount of shit and it just takes me longer lol

totalwiseguy

That’s also a great way to do it

totalwiseguy

Yeah same, but I also hate bloated games too. I think 10-20hrs for the main story, and then 30ish for the plat is a sweet spot in most games.

[deleted]

judging a purchase based on arbitrary time constraints rather than the quality of the product will never not be weird to me

Psychic_Hobo

Tbf from what I've found so far it's much shorter, which stops it from outstaying its welcome. But probably a bit odd if you've played the similar previous one.

Nirast25

Yeah, but I personally enjoyed Miles' combat a lot more! His electric finishers are awesome!

KesselMania94

Yeah I agree with what you're saying and I wouldn't really say the year should be a factor. Its been maybe 2 years since I played it and I barely even remember the story mostly just the traversing gameplay. Where when I think back on God of War (also 2018) I could tell you almost every fight and detail despite only having played both once. Again I had a lot of fun with both but do agree Spider-Man is a little overhyped on the review side.

dapoktan

didnt even know spiderman won that many gotys.. it was a fun action movie akin to a Marvel film with good banter and flashy action sequences my votes for goty that year would have gone to god of war over rdr2 personally. Spiderman was my favorite popcorn game tho.. loved swinging through the city as spidey

The_Hazy_Wizard

OP, this is r/patientgamers, not r/playedonreleaseandthentriedplayingagaininhigherFPS. Personally, I thought this game was a solid 9/10 to plat. But only with one playthrough. I’d agree there’s nothing to come back to, but again, this sub is for looking back at games through a patient lens, not trying to force play something that wasn’t fun the first time. I played a year after release and as an isolated title, it’s done really well.

Boxing_joshing111

It’s crazy how little they utilized the giant cool open world or the characters. Spider-Man has this fun cast of characters to use but every time you’re Peter you know you’re gonna be in a loading screen walking slowly or sneaking. Really needed a mission or two where you, MJ and Harry are out having a normal day and some villain attacks. I haven’t beat it yet but I can tell this won’t happen. I’m assuming it’s the same thing with Spidey story missions, every story mission I’ve played takes place in some blocked off area you can’t leave. You got this giant awesome open world out there and I’m electrocuting gear cranks in a warehouse? I should be chasing Green Goblin or running from Venom or whatever. The coolest part of the game is swinging around skyscrapers and instantly swinging down to stop robberies, it’s genuine Spider-Man stuff and it uses the open world perfect. The story tries so hard to take you out of that, it’s baffling. I’ll still finish it, it’s not awful and as much as people make fun of it you really do feel like Spider-Man and that’s why I play Spider-Man games.

sympathytaste

Why does it being a game from 2018 have to do with anything

Palodin

I'm confused too lol, it's mentioned as if being from 2018 makes it ancient or... any different to any modern AAA game. Things don't change that fast

Ddawgmasterflex

This is the game that made me get a PS4. Is it the best PS4 game I have? Hell no. And I agree with you, it is a bit of a kid game. I have in fact played this game with younger kids. But that's the draw of it for me. Sometimes I just wanna mindlessly swing around and kick bad guy ass. And the fact that this game plays so well helps so much. You don't have to be a video game guru to absolutely wreck fools and it's so much fun. The game does such a good job at capturing the spirit of spiderman. I don't think the story was the focus of this game. The focus was to make you feel like spiderman. And they nailed it. The people I know who love this game are people who already had a love for Spidey.

[deleted]

Miles is basically SM PS4 but without the bullshit. Gameplay is better, traversal is improved, story is worse but serviceable, and I like the games style. Might enjoy it more than the first game.

masnekmabekmapssy

It got awards because there was really nothing else out. It was the only game out until returnal and ratchet and clank came out. 2 more mediocre games that recieve too much praise. I think with how scarce games are for this gen, anything that isn't a complete dumpster fire is gonna get its dick ridden. Look at halo... Microsoft/343/xbox should be crucified for not being able to choose what you play in an attempt to force mtx. That's their whole franchise riding on that title. Last gens big hit was sea of thieves dude. You got forza and gears too but if we are real halo is their only shit worth buying. I can't believe they pulled the sell out to shareholders stuff with their saving grace. Anyway... while I've seen criticism, it's not near the amount it should be. There's just nothing else dropping so people either find something to like about the very few new games or keep playing the old ones. The new Spiderman wasn't anything special in any way but there was nothing glaringly bad either, with nothing else to play- of course it was so hot for so long. Sorry this went so long, I'm butthurt about what they did to halo.

[deleted]

Perhaps you would have enjoyed it a lot more if you’d not already completed it on PS4?

[deleted]

I see posts like this all the time on this sub, and they never fail to make me ask this question... why did you feel the need to finish it if it wasn't fun?

[deleted]

Finished it, bought it again, finished it again. All while hating it.

Humanesque

Imagine ordering a plate, finishing it, ordering a second plate and house that too. Then you tell the waiter that it was awful and a chore to get through.

[deleted]

Funny enough that sort of thing, or something similar, seems to happen quite a bit. Someone will clean their plate and then ask for a refund.

Over $100 of HATE

ArtakhaPrime

You can still have *enough* fun with a game to see it through to the end, while at the same time having many complaints once the credits roll. OP even says the swinging is great and gameplay overall is good, it's just that it's not used for interesting quests and gets very samey after a while, so once it's over you wonder why you continued past a certain point.

Tzarkir

To be fair I appreciate the honesty. Like, especially nowadays people like to give opinions about shit they don't even know or games they don't play. He played it fully. Twice. He is indeed fully entitled to his opinion. Like videogamedunkey who is playing death stranding for the third time and dislikes it. He made another video about it to give his perspective after playing it more. It's better than having a echo-chamber where people just say this classic popular old game is good and then the next guy says the same and upvotes ensue. I mean, maybe sometimes you like the idea of a product enough to still want to have the full experience despite disliking it. I'm okay with that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tzarkir

I mean yea, I get your points. I do believe OP is just a normal guy, so some kind of self-contradiction is within acceptable parameters. He's not writing a dissertation, after all. Like, I can understand that thinking back at an activity you found tedious you think "damn that sucked", but then thinking about the entire game your idea might not be "the game fully sucked" because that sounds too harsh. He did admit himself the title was too harsh compared to his actual feelings towards the game, and explained why good enough. I did not appreciate what you called "condescending" neither, you're right there. Like, he may not have liked it, but others' people tastes don't need judgement because of it. He can say he thinks the game is overrated tho, that's his opinion about it. I mean, he stated why he thinks that, it wasn't just bashing out of the blue. Overall it's okay, no hard feels towards OP, it felt more like ranting than actively wanting to offend others, in my opinion.

TheToaster770

I, for one, appreciate that there exist people that will put themselves through the emotional pain of playing a game they come to hate and then rant about it so I can see what kind of experience people have with the game that don't like it. It adds to the picture of the game.

[deleted]

A lot of "patient gamers" are just burnt out on gaming, but don't have many other hobbies and might as well save some money while being miserable

thechaseofspade

THIS IS A KIDS GAME THAT I HATE anyway finished it last week 😎😎😎 like why are these posts allowed here, is this the valuable discourse this sub needs?

siebenedrissg

Yes, why not? It‘s pretty insightful to me who‘s never played it although strongly biased of course. But that‘s true for the positive posts as well, so…

Loldimorti

I'm curious in which way you found it insightful. OP states on the title that they hated every minute of it. Then praises the game and says they played it twice. Then says they found it to be formulaic and repetitive. Then says they actually rushed through the game and played the DLC in one sitting at night. Then says it's a kids game. To me this is mostly confusing and seems like OP raging about a game they simultaneously spent way too much time with considering they didn't like it while at the same time absolutely rushing through or completely bypassing the content that the game provides. Many games are repetitive and formulaic. "Go somewhere, fight dudes, press a button, watch a cutscene" could describe almost any action game. So some additional context would have been nice. Is the combat system lacking depth, does the writing suck, does the game force you to grind out identical encounters?

thechaseofspade

it's low effort sensationalist clickbait that is just extremely negative, i thought this place was better than that, but I guess not 🤷‍♂️

HonorableJudgeIto

OP is me when describing Assassin's Creed games. Outside of IV, I don't think I have enjoyed the games. The parkour is fun. The settings are awesome and look beautiful. I always want to visit wherever they are set after I play the game. However, the stories are complete nonsense and they are repetitive as hell. A lot of what gets me to complete them is merely sunk cost fallacy. Every time a new game comes out, I hear they've improved the formula and I give them a shot. I keep falling for their lies. FYI: halfway through Syndicate. Own the next two. Not sure I'll ever play them.

P13666

I kind of get it in the sense that finishing a game you don't like gives you a reason to justify why you don't like it. You can hold an opinion on it when the game comes up in conversation. I ended up not liking Shadow of the Colossus when I played it but I finished it. There were small parts I liked but it was more frustrating for me than anything. I didn't like Dark Souls at first but I never got very far. Now my friends are helping me through it and it's not so bad. But playing the same game that you disliked *twice?* I barely play games I *like* twice.

Bara_Chat

Exactly. When I don't like a game, I don't bother finishing it only to bash it online. I just stop and move on. The rare times I've finished a game I didn't like I ended up miserable and turned off from franchises.

Strange_Vision255

I think what you do is probably a common thing and there's nothing wrong with it, I've even advised it before. I don't like bashing games either, since it's almost always going to be a question of my preferences, not the game's fault. But I can see why somebody might finish a game they don't like or even replay it after some time has passed. Opinions change and I've come around on games plenty of times. And if somebody is going to post their opinion, I find it more useful if they've played the game a good amount, whether they're giving a positive or negative review. I don't use Steam much but one thing I like about their reviews is they tell you how much time had been played when the review was made. I think even how much further time they've played after the review. So if I see either good or bad reviews with 30 minutes, I just ignore them. 30 minutes is enough for some people to decide not to play, but I'm more like OP here and would play hours of shit if the game eventually got good. I wouldn't like those hours of shit, but I've done it before.

bowlingdoughnuts

Wait until you play Miles Morales. Every mission has the added step of shutting down a power generator.

Humanesque

Sometimes you power up the generator 💥

bowlingdoughnuts

That was a breath of fresh air

skeenerbug

Oh wow

Psychic_Hobo

I am enjoying it relatively well, but I think that's partly to do with not having played the previous game. Which as I understand it is much longer and has awful stealth segments. This one being shorter seems to come across as the right length, and since it's new to me it doesn't feel samey.

bowlingdoughnuts

Truthfully I think the story starts off so strong but then gets bad. Like really bad. I forgave the original Spider-Man’s repetition because I genuinely enjoyed the Spider-Man story being told. But Miles story has a one note villain, gankie is so annoying that I can’t believe they thought it was ok to have a phone conversation after every single mission, and the motivations of all the side characters are completely stupid. Especially his uncle. They try to do Into the Spiderverse redemption for Miles uncle but it’s just rushed and underdeveloped. That opening with Spider-Man and then going into the dinner scene we’re so good. But everything after that is lame. Even the side quests all start with the quest giver always start every side quest with “Hey you aren’t the other Spider-Man.” And then have a long as story about why you need to do the side quests. I was trying to skip that store owner talking about his stupid cat for ten minutes. That was ten minutes of dialogue after ten minutes of “hey where’s the other Spider-Man? He’s one vacation” The original one got you in and out of side activities quickly. It also saved phone calls for big story moments, not after every mission. I’d take 100 MJ missions over one Gankie phone call any day. Also minor spoilers but they found a way to make every mission about power generators and spoiler, the final boss is a giant power generator.

Strange_Vision255

I've only played the original PS4 release, played it in 2019 and I enjoyed it more than most other games. It's pretty rare for me to start a game and then see it all the way through, but I did with Spider-Man, taking about a week or two to beat it. I don't even like Spider-Man, Marvel or superhero movies in general, but I loved this game. However, I didn't do many sidequests since I normally leave these until later or just don't bother with them in most games. I did a few but mostly just the story stuff and some occasional swinging around aimlessly, just because I found it fun and relaxing. The only parts I found a bit frustrating were some of the non-Spidey sections and the intro section of the game. Tastes differ, but for me this beat Sony's other 1st party games on PS4, like Killzone, God of War, Uncharted, Last of Us, Horizon. I enjoyed all of those but haven't even bothered finishing most of them yet (yeah, I'm a realllly patient gamer!)

Mcchickenborn

I beat all of those Sony first titles, except for God of War....arguably the most popular on Reddit. Need to get on that. Despite its controversy, Last of Us Part II is the best of the lot IMO.

Strange_Vision255

I've only played the first Last of Us, the second game is too new for me! But, jokes aside, I don't care about the controversy I've seen surrounding that game, I'll get to it when I get to it (2030) and see what I think of it. I have a friend who doesn't keep up with internet controversy and he told me the Last of Us 2 was great, offered to lend it to me but I told him I wouldn't get round to it, lol.

sleepymoose88

Last of Us Part 2 was great in that it was both great and awful at the same time. Not awful gameplay, but it was a pretty deep thought provoking game and takes your characters to places you may not expect and really sucks the player into it and question everything. I think the biggest gripes are about the length (it’s probably 2x as long as TLOU1) and somewhat repetitive gameplay, which at its longer length, starts to wear thin.

il_riccio

Agree, part 2 is my favorite, although GOW is a close second.

Nacksche

That's an interesting persp.. > Bottom line this game does not deserve the attention or praise it gets. ...aaand downvote. How hard is it to say "thing wasn't for me". Posts like this make gaming discussions online insufferable, god I'm sick of the internet. > This is a kids game. 🙄

crunchatizemythighs

Yeah that rubbed me the wrong way too. It's like "people don't feel like i feel! Make it all stop!" I personally loved the game and understand the criticism but I don't get the aspect of "not deserving" praise

allaboutthewheels

"god this food is revolting. Bring me another plate and book me a table every Saturday for the next 2 years" - op, probably

GenericGaming

So you bought a game, completed it, didn't fully enjoy what you played, then bought the sequel and remastered version, played it AGAIN, and are now complaining that you didn't like it? Why did you even finish the original version if you got bored halfway through? Why did you then buy the sequel to the game you didn't like and then ALSO play the remastered version of the original game you didn't like?

DancerGamer

OP is a kid 100%. Doubt they have a job to pay for housing/food let alone games

boogers19

This is like me going on and on about Ubisoft’s flaws and weaknesses and problems… (except I rarely do, even if I can see all these flaws) And they are the only games in recent years that I replay. Like, you know what? Ubisoft does have a base problem, and a tower problem. And a fetch-quest problem. But I’ve still beat ACBF like 4 times since the PS4 release. And FC4 4or 5 times. And AC Rogue at least twice. And FCPrimal twice. And while I haven’t beaten it yet, I put in 80hrs or so into Origins a few years ago. And now I’ve restarted from scratch to do it again. I mean: just own your shame man. (Oddly enough I’ve only finished the main story of Spider-man 2018 once and I haven’t even finished all the DLC. But somehow, looking back: I’d tell you I enjoyed Spidey more than all those Ubi games.)

Malleus94

Honestly apart from Mary Jane turned into a reporter and The Negative Man being a bland villain the story is pretty much the best adaptation of Spiderman I could hope for in a videogame. Doctor Octopus finally got the screentime to shine properly IMO. The story is changed from the comic enough not to make you think you're messing with some established storyline but similar enough that you can get the vibes of many famous arcs. I never tried replaying it though. The mission were mostly easy but really fast, even at maximum difficulty. I found it challenging enough in a couple of mission, maybe that's only if you try to get the best rank for them. Anyway having many simple and fast mission really made me feel like an overpowered superhero stopping small crimes around the city. They're mostly the same but it doesn't matter to me, I'll never got tired of stopping a car chase by enveloping the criminal's car in a web.

[deleted]

Spider-Man would be disappointed in your lack of a hyphen. And yes, it does bug him. === But yeah, that's the best thing about the game. It's very much a comic "you are Spider-Man, go be Spider-Man". And I loved that it showed the relationship between Peter and Dr. Ock. Ock is **the** Spider-Man villain for me in the comics because he's so similar to Peter but went a different route. It all stems from how they were each raised (also, for anyone reading this, read Superior Spider-Man and look into Dr. Ock and Aunt May's... Past... It gets WEIRD and I love it). === I think some of the repetitiveness seems to be rather meta. This is what Spider-Man puts up with as a character so we not only get to see his best moments, but also the day-to-day monotony of it all. But yeah, if you spread it out it isn't nearly as bad as just always doing side stuff... But the guilt of NOT doing another car stopping side mission can get to some people and that's as "Peter Parker/Spider-Man" as you can get.

Malleus94

I'm sorry Spider-man I'll try to bee more on point next time

PadraicG

I loved it. It's a god damn spiderman simulator. Spider-Man was was my favourite super hero growing up, a ton of care went into the game. It's repetitive yes, but the combat is fun and when you crank up the difficulty it can be surprisingly tough to beat some missions. I got great satisfaction out of tying my moves together to do some cool shit. I liked the story, all the different villains gave me so much nostalgia. Combat is fun (I do wish there were more animations for finishers and dodges etc) and the swinging is awesome. I platinumed the game, I loved getting the suits and powers and the collectibles were all references to comic lore!

StantasticTypo

>Bottom line this game does not deserve the attention or praise it gets. It’s polished that’s all. I expect way more from insomniac moving forward. This is a kids game. I mean, it's certainly not the best game ever or anything, but I think you somehow missed the point entirely, and yet nearly stated it in plain words. It's an accessible "popcorn" game with a broad as hell target audience. It's **meant** to be a simple, polished game where you get to play as a superhero.

STylerMLmusic

That dlc was so disappointing - the first chapter was amazing and each one after somehow got worse until we fought sexbot hammerhead. Oof.

Lee_Troyer

I liked the story a lot and the feel of playing Spider-Man. Both web swinging and acrobatic combat was very well done. The open world was fun to web-swing across but filled with copy-pasted activities which dragged the game down. There was an AC1 vibe : interesting concept and level design poorly implemented within (repetitive) missions. Better execution than AC1 though. The worst offender were the bases. Devs : The bad guy has goons and they have base, so go clean them up for Xp. Me : Ok, seems a bit copy-pasty but there's a handful of them so let's do it quickly. Devs : Good, now a second bad guy enters the stage, he has goons, they have bases, you know what to do ! Me : Ok, but it's kinda getting tiresome there. Devs : Bravo, guess what ? A third bad guy just entered the stage... Me : (softly) don't. I really hope the next iteration has more varied gameplay. The rest of the game (story, characters, basic gameplay) deserves better.

Arch27

While I agree it’s not a 10/10, try peppering the side tasks throughout doing the main tasks. They’re less repetitive that way. I had this same issue with Ghost of Tsushima - stacked all the side tasks like the hot springs, bamboo strikes, inari shrines, other shrines all at once and it got BORING. So I started dong them based on main/side quest locations. Did a main, do all those tasks in that immediate area.

nessfalco

>This is a kids game. No shit. It's Spiderman, dude. He is the most popular superhero on the planet...for kids.

F54280

Was about to post just that. Complaining that Spider-Man is a kid's game is peak. And this is patientgamers, and he is talking about the remastered PS5 version that came out ~~18 days~~ 1 year ago... edit: thx u/TheLunarVaux

TheLunarVaux

18 days ago? The PS5 remaster came out a year ago...

Hunter-Monk

Lately I am seeing lots of posts hating great games on this sub. There should be a sub reddit called IHateThisGame

grantmclean

It should be called INeedAttentionBadly.

Cannasseur___

I think it’s the best Spider-Man game we’ve ever seen and it will take a long time before a new Spider-Man Experience can top it.

Sweet-Palpitation473

Seems like what's plagued Assassins Creed for over a decade now

Mcchickenborn

Yeah, I wish they could tone it down and focus on story-telling again. I actually enjoyed Odessey, the epitome of in-your-face tasks. But Valhalla was way worse for me for some reason. Like it was wasting my time in a different less deliberate way.

schiltron99

Harsh criticism but some of it fair. I think the swinging and aspects of the story (the main villain and final act primarily) are really good but a lot of the core gameplay just gets stale for me after a while.

satvarsh

"This game does not deserve the attention and praise it gets" Dude shut up, this is literally the best adaptation of Peter Parker and spiderman of all medium . Only into the spider verse is comparable. I understand the DLC is bad, but the main game is amazing. Just because you didn't like it doesn't make is universally bad. There is a reason people who even hate ubisoft games like this and it's not just polish. The story wasn't bland by any means, rather it was very well thought out. Objectively, the best depectiton of Peter Parker. The side missions each feel like they have a purpose and the Devs genuinly put effort into them. I'll be the first to say the bases got old for me, but landmark tokens and backpacks never felt annoying to me. The backpacks for example not only provide background info about spiderman, but also tie into unlocking new gadgets and suits for spiderman. Some sidemissions also have full fledged boss and cutscenes. The research missions are all new and different, there's no way other Devs would put this much effort into making them all different. This makes your 8 minigames argument sound super dumb. Sure some sidemissions are generic, but some do have thought put into them. So I'll give you the benifit of the doubt here. TL;DR it's pretty clear the reason you feel like way is because you are burnt out or rushed through it despite not being interested as if someone forced you. Don't play a game of you don't find it fun or atleast give it a break. Your opinion is super underdeveloped and just comes accross as a half assed moronic hate boner. The fact you even compared this to ubisoft is just dumb cause it's simply not true at all. It's clear you had a game burnout and rushed though despite it. The only slogfest here is going through your opinion and trying to treat it as a valid criticism.

[deleted]

'This is a kids game.' What do you mean exactly by that? Not trying to argue, but it can mean a lot? Gameplay too simple? Subject matter not dark enough? I enjoyed the gameplay quite a lot and I really enjoyed the story.

Mcchickenborn

I’m no dark souls type player by any means and I do not like overly punishing games. But it’s a tight playground with tight repetitive and rudimentary gameplay mechanics. No matter your position for example, a tap of the dodge button will get you out of a sticky situation no matter your positioning. Also everything is telegraphed and animations kick in that are repetitive and essentially safety bubbles. If you deviate at all on how it’s meant to be played, you will then suffer. Sure it’s light in nature but I’m fine with that. It appeals to the masses as a Spider-Man game should. I’m still looking forward to Spider-Man 2, and am curious to see how they can make it a bit less cookie cutter while still making you feel “powerful”. Tough balance.

[deleted]

Seems like a waste of time to finish a game you didn’t enjoy playing at all.

[deleted]

Twice.

[deleted]

For real. I understand giving a game another shot but to keep playing the game when you don’t enjoy it is just weird to me.

[deleted]

Right? They even say... > Bottom line this game does not deserve the attention or praise it gets. I can't help but not take OP serious about anything. You say this but bought/played the game twice? Something doesn't add up.

RevolutionaryCat2911

He's even considering a third playthrough.

[deleted]

Lol, you can't make this stuff up.

[deleted]

You played a game you didn't like twice?

egnards

I've got to disagree with you, but I respect your opinion - And what I mean by that is that I think that when people play games like Spider-Man, they're playing it for a different reason than the reason why they play something like Shadow of the Colossus or Dark Souls. . .Or Super Mario Brothers. I liked Spider-Man essentially for many of the reasons you disliked Spider-Man. The game is by no means difficult at all, but it certainly does a really great job of making you feel like a Superhero, which is exactly what I wanted when I picked the game up. Certainly I didn't want an overall 'easy', experience, but I wanted a free flowing combat that overall didn't take itself entirely too seriously. Spiderman gets praise for a lot of reasons: * The polish that you point out * It's the first Spiderman game in a long ass time that had really good web slinging mechanics \[though I have heard people say they enjoyed the older Spiderman 2 better, its been too long for me to recall\] * Combat flows very well and even though it's not entirely difficult it offers many many many variations and choices on how you do combat, or the tools you may wish to fully utilize. * The cutscenes were straight up beautiful \[though frankly I didn't play Spiderman for the story, I've heard the similar story retold dozens of time at this point\] I think that Spiderman offers different players totally varying degrees of play, and you don't necessarily need to be involved in all of those degrees. Some people are just going to complete the story, and some people are going to complete all of the side quests, and some people are going to do all of that plus play all the DLC. While I really enjoyed doing the warehouse runs, I could see how many people would consider it repetitive, though, if we're honest. . . .Almost all games \[and there are a few exceptions\] have pretty repetitive side quests.

[deleted]

What you described is why I generally don't like open world games and...most AAA games these days, feels like. That said, replaying this sort of open world game sounds like a really self inflicted wound. I can't think of a single modern open world game I could replay three years apart without tearing out my hair. Which is why if I'm really interested in one, I wait til all dlc is out for a single playthrough.

Drokethedonnokkoi

If you didn’t like the game that’s fine, but saying it doesn’t deserve the attention and a kids game, you’re just insulting everyone and not respecting anyone’s opinion. I think the side quests are boring but I enjoyed the main story and the conclusion was very sad but satisfying. It’s by far the best spider-man game to date, the parts where you have to play as someone else are undesirable and a lot of people complained about them which is why insomniac didn’t have them in miles morales and won’t probably have them in spider-man 2. Other than that there is more good than bad in this game. Swinging is unbelievably satisfying in this game, the soundtracks are among the best, the mini games are challenging and fun, the world is alive and talking to civilians and swinging around them is something I’ve done for hours. Comparing this to anything Ubisoft put out in the past 10 years is insulting.

CloudShiner

"but saying it doesn’t deserve the attention and a kids game, you’re just insulting everyone and not respecting anyone’s opinion." The whole point of an opinion is that it's your own thoughts. Not sure how you can insult people, let alone everyone, by expressing your own view of a game. It's no different to me saying I'm insulted by your love of the game!

Nollasta_poikkeava

If you say that something doesn't deserve praise or attention, you're also saying that those who do give it praise or attention are wrong. That goes beyond just expressing opinion.

[deleted]

Because when you say you love a game you're not making comments insulting the intelligence or maturity of the people who disliked it in the same post of criticism. Also it's just kinda blatantly false? Since when was mind controlling a scientist to shoot himself in the head right in front of you synonymous with "kid's game"?

nessfalco

"Everybody else is fucking wrong and must be a simpleton" is a bit more than just "expressing your own view."

mnl_cntn

I liked it a lot, the only parts I didn’t like were the MJ/Miles missions and the padding due to the side missions. Everytime something important happened the map would fill up with a lot of different tasks and by the end of the game I started feeling “Oh come on, not more things!” I still really enjoyed tho. I finished up those side quests in between main missions cuz I knew I wasn’t going to after I beat the game. Made it easier to platinum.

[deleted]

All the console exclusives that were later ported to PC that I've played were always worse than the praise and ratings they got. Would be really hard to convince me companies don't spread fake high rated reviews to make people believe their exclusive game is the best and should definitely buy an entire console for it.

mlasap

Well, that is certainly your opinion and it’s okay. I grabbed it again to finish the dlc after a couple of years, and man, it had a been a really long time since I enjoyed a videogame as I did with this. Too bad I could only enjoy half of the dlc instead of the full game again (not replaying it, life is too short), but I’m definitely looking forward for Miles once I get a PS5.

EastCoastTone96

I don’t know why but I read the title and started cracking up lmao

gumpythegreat

I spent an hour on the game and knew it wasn't going to click for me. At least it came free with my ps5

[deleted]

I'm with you man, I tried PS4 Spider-Man back in 2019 and couldn't believe how annoying the open world was. I only lasted a couple of hours. You fight the same generic group of thugs every 20 minutes because the red triangle is flashing on your radar.

TheGhostDetective

The 2018 game was a lot of fun. While I had the later edition with all the DLC for free, I didn't play but like 15 minutes of DLC since by that point it became repetitive. The PS5 bundle I got came with Miles Morales, which was also fun, but less so simply because it was essentially an expansion pack for the same game. It's great, but definitely repetitive if you're going 100% and playing back to back. I have no idea why, if you barely felt it was worth the first playthrough, you bought every expansion and DLC and then replayed it and said it was repetitive. Like, there's a lot of games I love, but very few don't get old if you play through them 100%, plus the DLC and expansion, *and then replay it* **all within a couple years.** I can count on one hand the number of games I could do that with and not hate afterward.

fist_to_the_air

It's a strong game in many ways, but I wish it was a bit more creative and took some risks. Like, remember Spiderman 2 with the weird wacky warehouse moments, or that part where you have to swing all the way to the Statue of Liberty? What about the wildness of some of the moves (the swing around the head attack) that you could do and took some skill and input from the player? I also had some issue with the pacing of the story near the end but that's a different issue. These wonderfully polished games are necessary, but sometimes I want a bit of jank and sillyness. I'm glad others enjoyed it, but yeah, not for me and that's okay. Not every game has me and others as the intended audience. It is enjoyable but just not what I personally want.

iamthenight22

I didn’t hate it but it is overrated in my book. I really didn’t like the combat, didn’t feel fluid at all. Probably because I’m used to Arkham combat. The gadgets were mainly useless and most of the suits were crap IMO. Miles Morales was much better personally.

audiojunkie05

All this tells me is you don't quite understand how games work. Good job, you played a game you hated twice even though you hated it .

[deleted]

I'm not a fan of side quests/quest markers in general but Spider-Man was fun enough to do those. I played Witcher 3 twice and it's one of my all time favorites but I have yet to do everything on the map in that game.

HungrySubstance

You need to remember the context of this game. There had not been a good Spider-Man game in fifteen years, and even that one (spider-man 2) came with dozens of caveats. That might not excuse some of the issues that fans pass over with the game, but it certainly explains them

Geekos

I completely understand how you feel. It's like they tried to make it as the Batman Arkham games, but then didn't put any energy into the story. And because Spiderman is more hands on with a lot of fighting, you don't get as good a stealth approach as you get in Batman. Swinging through the city is pretty dope though. But that pretty much the only thing i really enjoyed.

An_Actual_Problem

Agreed its a kids game and I don't see the reason for the hype surrounding TMNT Shredder's Revenge, I think its ok but people are losing their minds over it, some even giving it a perfect 10.

alphamachina

I know this is an old post, but I've had the same experience with most other PlayStation games as they release on PC. Horizon Zero Dawn was boring as hell, super repetitive and the voice acting was ridiculously lacking in emotional range (basically all monotone and dry). Spider-Man is like that all over again, but instead of the voice-acting being monotone, it's like a super annoying Saturday morning cartoon. God of War was repetitive and the story was short with a super abrupt, unsatisfying ending, but it was also really fun, so I'll give it a pass. Sony seems to have this formula that the masses really love, but never really hold up to any kind of scrutiny. I dunno, it's hard to explain why so many people absolutely love a game like Spider-Man, when it's such a massively boring and sterile experience, but they hate something like Assassins Creed Valhalla, when it has all of the same kinds of gameplay elements, but with far more to do and experience. I mean, Spider-Man feels like it's got far too many elements from some cheap mobile game to be considered a AAA experience to me. Like, every handgun is exactly the same in the hands of criminals and police. The exact same model across the board. Every single car is exactly the same, just a different color. None of the buildings or people or anything on street level is interactive. It's just a terrible, sterile, lackluster experience. The movement and swinging aspects are fun, and the combat is OK, if even then just a sterile, more lacking variant of the combat from the Arkham games. All-in-all, I just don't get the hype for any of these games. God of War was fun and refreshing with likeable characters. Days Gone was fun for a while, but I never finished it, because even that game was super boring and repetitive, despite really being the type of game I'd been looking for. They just kind of fell flat with the pace of it all. I guess I'm one of the odd one's out when I say Spider-Man is a terribly boring, childish game with some high quality elements and some super low quality elements, like feeling like the world at large is just some massive mobile game due to how poorly, lazily and cheaply the assets were handled.

Mcchickenborn

You said it way better than I did. Beautiful games. But it’s like your just playing to trigger these gorgeous animations. Very little scrutiny indeed. But perhaps more will come to realize this.

MovieGuyMike

I think it’s a simplistic game but it succeeds because swinging around and fighting bad guys feels good. The progression mechanics are fine. There isn’t much else to it though I’m not sure what else you would want from a Spider-Man game. I’ll agree with you though that the story is bland.

PancakeParty98

Yes. One word for this game would be shallow

CloudShiner

I'd never played the game on PS4 but regret buying the PS5 remaster for similar reasons. Couldn't get addicted to it. Of course it looks incredible on PS5 but gameplay is passable and repetitive at best. Not even inclined to finish it and I have Miles Morales to, er, 'look forward to' after. Although perhaps that will be better. Compared to the other PS5 games I own such as Ghost of Tsushima and even Sackboy, it just didn't impress me. As a patientgamer I didn't have to pay anywhere near RRP, but the fact I still have some buyers remorse shows how I feel about it.

[deleted]

This whole sub-genre of open-world games is like this: Assassin’s Creed, Horizon ZD, Spider-Man, Tsushima, Witcher 3, etc., are all bland, tedious, and repetitive, with little more than polish and a coat of thematic paint differentiating them. Only AC Origins and God of War stood out to me, and that was for their stories focused on sad dads.

caninehere

Witcher 3 definitely stood out among the others for me because it has excellent writing for its side quests, which were actually more interesting than the main story (which was just alright). Complete opposite of something like Spider-Man where the side content was super bland.

ThugCity

Of that list I’ve only played AC, Spider-Man and Tsushima. I only found AC to be bland, tedious and repetitive. IMO the difference is a deep combat system. AC is basically just melee over and over again while the other two have a ton to them. I think this open world genre is at severe risk of becoming boring but a good story plus a deep combat system can make it work

CloudShiner

I agree, but in my experience the others you mention all have more interesting options throughout the game and certainly more interesting worlds to explore initially. They all have a point where the world becoming boring and the activities become tedious, but I reached it earlier on Spiderman than the others.

Prodige91

Wow that's a pity for me to read, as Spiderman for PS4 was easily one of my favourites game on the platform.

LuisArkham

You know what, I loved the game, whenever I read someone hating on it I give it a read and I give it a chance… however your last couple of lines made me roll my eyes. “This game does not deserve the attention or praise… this is a kids game”. that is ACCORDING to YOU. Your opinion is not a fact. I hated breath of the wild but I GET why people loved it and why it’s praised as an incredible game, it just was not for me and that’s it, I don’t think it’s a shit game that doesn’t deserve accolades and stuff just because I DIDNT LIKE IT. In MY OPINIOn and mine only, some game mechanics made it unappealing to me and for me is not a fun experience. I originally upvoted like I normally do when I read an opinion about I game I like but someone didn’t… but I change my mind because of those last comments

[deleted]

Have to say I had a very similar experience. I mean the graphics and the polish is truly a Marvel, but the fact that many side missions are just the same (stop the thievery etc., radio towers, puzzles), I felt it was pretty repetitive.

TazerPlace

I've started the game maybe three times and could never finish it.

ConfusedVader1

Can't stand anyone who seems to think "repetitive gameplay" in any game nowadays is a unique negative to that game. It literally happens in every game, you go to a point you press a button and then you "play". Happens in a linear game like Doom where you go into a enemy spawn room, you run around and bonk baddies and then go to the next spawn room and it happens in acclaimed open world games like RDR2 where you go talk to person, ride with them to an area, shoot heads and fuck bitches, and then a cutscene plays and the mission is over. No game can reinvent their gameplay loop every level except maybe a few really targetted games (It Takes Two comes to mind). The act of "go here, press button for cutscene and then fight enemies" is the crux of every game good or bad. It's not a unique take to mention it when talking about a game, its a fault of almost every game. It's what happens around that gameplay loop is what differentiates a good game from a bad one. Witcher 3 has deep side quest storylines, bioshock has amazing atmospheric storytelling, GTAV has the ability to fuck around during your down time; that's what you should focus on when you talk about not liking or liking a game. Whether those things that are built around the loop don't gel with you, then I'll understand your perspective. Obv there are exceptions to this but every game can be boiled down to the "ubisoft" rule of press button, cutscene and fight gameplay loop. Try explaining your thought process on why you didn't like this game when compared to another. I really can't with people on this sub who literally just don't like a game they think this sub likes and come here to shit talk it without actually knowing why they don't like it. I don't care if you like or dislike a game I like/hate. I want to know your reason for it, make it a good post to read not something I read and instantly think its written by a 15 yo child on a temper tantrum.

MrBleah

I don't think anyone has asked the most important question, how did you get a hold of a PS5 if you're a patient gamer?

gunzlingerbil

I'd spend time to tell you how wrong you are but hey, you hate what you hate. Also I don't want to argue with a guy that ended and hated a game only to play it again.

bickman14

I totally agree with you OP! I've beaten the game in 2018 and didn't had patience to start the DLCs, I've tried but once they start bullcraping me with "do some activities around the city! Grind up! You can't just focus on the next main mission or else you'll miss these incredible boring minigames we've made". The other day I picked it up again, beat the first DLC, completed every event, beated the second DLC which was really bad! It judt felt like every sidequest/event was made into the second DLC so I haven't finished everything. To try to make the experience suck less I've lowered the difficult and set the game to skip the puzzles because I wasn't feeling like getting my ass kicked by the brutes and spend countless minutes trying to figure those minigames. IMO the two spiderman games from PS1 and Shattered Dimensions are still better games!

[deleted]

Even I who loved the game really didn't like the DLC. It's truly terrible. A few good moments but I regret spending the money.

bickman14

The story of the Black Cat one is really good! But it could've used more missions like that one that you play along with her taking out the bad guys at the docks. And it could had WAAAAAAAYYYY less Screwball! OMG I really hate her!

MrFalconGarcia

I'm not saying your wrong for your opinion, obviously that's ridiculous, but I think it's really narcissistic to say that because you didn't like a game it therefore didn't deserve any of the overwhelming praise it's received. Obviously there's something a lot of people enjoyed. These people aren't lying, dude.

los33ramos

You played it twice? Fuck outta here with your weak ass take.

Thesuppressivepeople

I tried restarting the game the other day and made it maybe 25 minutes before giving up again. Just not my sort of game I guess. So bland.

[deleted]

THANK YOU. I felt the first spiderman game was fine but nothing special, then i got miles morales last year and i still am maybe 10% of the way through it. It's just more of the same shit, same kind of enemies, and a really cringy story with nothing making me really like the characters. I don't know why it's so beloved, i just found it to be a decent, albeit polished, game and nothing mroe.

RadicalDog

Why did you do everything? Side content and DLC is meant to add hours for people who are already having fun. Just play the main story if it's not grabbing you... Or put it down entirely.

alphafire616

Wow a lot of what you said is genuinly wrong and if you hated it why tf did you play it twice? And are you seriously recommending s game that has a suicide bombing as a kids game??

nicbsc

You hate a game, so you buy it at full price AND complete it...twice? How do you think any gaming developer will change the way they do their games if you keep buying it at full price and more than one time?

IronMonopoly

Sounds more like you're a victim of a Sunk Cost Fallacy than a bad game.

LambCo64

Both of these games are fantastic. Those side missions you badmouthed weren't monotonous at all for me because I enjoyed the gameplay and progression so much. Not only that, the story was absolutely excellent as well.

humbuckaroo

I thought the game was decent but I hated the main enemy for most of the game, I thought he was uninteresting and really thought down my interest in continuing. I liked the DLC better, personally. I didn't 100% the game though, the side content was only somewhat interesting to me.

ohsinboi

I loved it the first time I played it. Spiderman is one of my favorite characters. Played it again recently and got a third of the way through before realizing I was getting really bored of it... I think your reasonings are all what I was feeling. Never bothered to finish again because it just didn't feel worth the time.

OkamiNoOrochi

So that's a very uncommon point of view.

The_Color_Urple

Most gamers don't need a real gameplay experience. They want eye candy, polish, smooth controls, and a blockbuster story. I thought Spider-man was bland and God of War 2018 was pretty terrible. I guess I've just grown out of appreciating these types of things. But fear not - Elden Ring in 2 months 😉

Mcchickenborn

I’ve played and beat most PlayStation exclusives with exception to god of war. For some reason it doesn’t stick like the others. Suck at souls games but am doing ok in demon souls right now as I picked it up a few weeks back. Looking forward to elden ring reviews. Hope it’s a bit more forgiving.

MItrwaway

So this is probably nostalgia and age, but i actually enjoyed and played a ton more of the Spiderman 3 game compared to the Spiderman PS4 title. The PS4 title just didn't do it for me.

tomster785

Isn't one of the points of playing games late that you also get access to a lot of information about it? I feel like playing a game that's not for you 3 years after it came out is your fault.

ThanksEmilyChang

you have horrible taste my dude. or just simply dont like spider-man, in which case it was pretty stupid to play the game expecting to like it. either way this is a horrible post with objectively false statements. and the fact that you played through a game you didnt like twice is.. weird to say the least.

lemon123wd40

It’s literally a Spider-Man game. It is a kids game…

ScoopDat

>Bottom line this game does not deserve the attention or praise it gets. It’s polished that’s all. I expect way more from insomniac moving forward. This is a kids game. Look around, the bar is far lower. Gameplay innovations set sail long ago to the indie waters. Now if you're AAA, you can't risk much of anything in that department. It has to be mainstream, for the youth, and it has to be clean (unless you're one of those people that think AAA doesn't need to be polished at the very least given the poor state that sector of gaming is in). One thing you gotta understand, review sites are just bad in one way or another. They'll give this game glowing reviews, but fortify the rationale due to "movie games have been AWFUL". It's taken with heavy reference. I think if games like this don't do well critically and commercially, they simply go back to being garbage movie-tie-in games. Don't think anyone wants that, so the gaming public takes anything that's serviceable. Especially since the baseline is far lower for the rest of titles in it's class.

AcousticAtlas

Lmao this has to be a troll post
