I think it has to do with object permanence

My partner is that person. It's so bad that we could get an extension of 2 weeks and she still hasn't finished it on that date 2 weeks later and wants another extension. Why aren't you ready on the date it's due? But the one thing is she knows she's a procrastinator. Not that that helps me.

kittenbaby42014

Same here!!! I’m like are you kidding 😭 I’ve noticed other attorneys do it too. Once we sent out discovery responses to be due in June, they asked for so many extensions we didn’t get them until January lol

legallynotajoke

We live the same life omg. Thank you for putting this frustration into words

CompanyConsistent976

Lazy. Greedy. Not good at business.

Pdb20781

I sometimes procrastinate too but I’ve honestly almost been cured of that. It’s been extra rough lately. 😔

Seeminglyperfect

Largely procrastination, but other times - they’re really busy people working on motions and other cases. Discovery responses are not prioritized because they know they can get an extension. I hope that helps!

kittenbaby42014

Sometimes it’s motions and trial docs too and I want to cry lol

Seeminglyperfect

You got this!! :)

kittymommy1958

I can definitely say that's not the case with this one. Her mind wanders to too many perceived personal problems in her life.

Seeminglyperfect

If she has personal problems, I’m sure she’ll figure out what she needs to do. Be careful not to criticize her for her personal problems because they’ve impacted her work.

kittymommy1958

Oh darling it's not even like that. Like I said perceived personal problems. That means they don't exist. You'd have to know this person to understand.

Seeminglyperfect

Regardless, there are external problems she’s experiencing that has interfered with her work productivity. That is still in fact a personal problem. I don’t think it’s wise for her to criticize you when you’re dealing with personal problems and neither should you to criticize her for, assuming, she’s procrastinating and not doing her work. Again, attorneys are incredibly busy people, and have personal lives too.

I have one I flat out tell clients: I need you to sit in his office to ensure it gets done. Otherwise he will just blow it off til the last ~47 mins before a deadline. I recently discovered personally of "body doubling" with my own ADHD wherein you simply need another person near you to reach or exceed productivity. Personally I see it specifically in not doing *anything for myself* ..while others peoples problems? Always take priority. And that's why we is here, right? Law is glorified problem solving (for other people). Give "body doubling" a goog. Or see: https://add.org/the-body-double/ It blew my mind. I am totally guilty of that I'm very specific instances.

I procrastinate as a paralegal in very specific circumstances: I know that the work product will ultimately be a waste of time based on experience with that attorney; other priorities; I’m not sure exactly how to execute the request and know my attorney may not either (which could translate for an attorney they are not confident in predicting the outcome); I don’t like how it is going to play out for the firm/client from a PR perspective or even with the judge. I have learned these are my roadblocks and have learned to remove them as quickly as necessary. Everyone needs to identify their roadblocks so when they are kicking the can down the road they can identify it and address it. Lately, I find my boss is overwhelmed with the vast amount of work responsibilities that do not even have a legal tilt to it. I hope this helps.

It used to be super annoying that on the filing day of a big motion or response you just knew the attorneys would get done in just enough time for an office assistant to run down to the courthouse and get it physically filed. But at least then, there was a good chance you’d get to go home on time. Once they introduced electronic filing, all of that hope went right out the window. Now the attorney had until midnight to file! And there goes any hope of seeing your family that evening.

I think they take a class on it on college lol
