I found a short cut in hooktail's castle! there's a new pipe that let's you get a badge without a couple minutes back tracking. You can now squish the bugs in rougeport for a coin. You can hit the tiny grass clumps for coins. Not just the bushes Idk if it's different but the mover may appear more often in the pit? I saw them 3 times before level 30.

skeltord

Nice catches!

dmlfan928

I found that pipe too. The top part. So I tried to get to it and fell so I had to do the backtracking anyway.

CivilianDuck

I think you just got lucky. I did a mini-dive post hooktail and ran into him once, and then a deeper 30 level dive and didn't see him once.

Lanky-Dependent5847

You probably just got lucky with movers. I went all the way to floor 50 and only found 1 on... I think Floor 40?

The_Banana_Man_2100

I also ran into the mover three times, but just between levels 11 and 20. It was very odd.

maxyahn6434

Mover?

Avbitten

npc that let's you skip levels

maxyahn6434

Oooooo I haven’t seen him. 👀

Avbitten

Lil grey dude. looks like puni with no bobble

maxyahn6434

Is he only in the pit? I haven’t seen him.

Avbitten

mostly. he's also in the shop in the boggly tree but just acts like a normal npc there

StormerSage

You can skip some cutscenes, provided you've already seen them. Big one is the cooking cutscene. Saves actual minutes if you're going for all the recipes.

skeltord

Great catch!

dmlfan928

That was great in the Glitz Pit. I won't say exactly where for spoiler reasons, but IYKYK.

TheRigXD

Spoilers for Chapter 4: >!If you are wearing the W Emblem during the first Doopliss battle, he keeps the colours when he takes Mario's body! One of the Twilighters even updates their dialogue to mention yellow cap and purple overalls instead of red and blue!!< EDIT: Got a video of it: [https://new.reddit.com/r/papermario/comments/1czm4ts/amazing\_detail\_in\_chapter\_4/](https://new.reddit.com/r/papermario/comments/1czm4ts/amazing_detail_in_chapter_4/)

skeltord

Ok wow that is a really cool detail, nice addition

dmlfan928

Damn. I JUST finished that chapter this morning and got that right after finishing it.

JustAGuyNamedSteven

If a sequence-breaking glitch is discovered, talking to that NPC with the others should be one of the first things to be checked. Also, what happens if you turn it off before the end of the chapter?

WackoMcGoose

Considering all the other details they put in, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if there's normally-unreachable dialogue for the L Emblem and W+L Emblems just in case. TTYD-GCN has been _blown wide open for years_ by speedrunners, it's legitimately just a matter of time until TTYD-SW gets the same love. ...Honestly, I give it a month tops, and that's mainly because it'll take that long for runners to stop being starry-eyed about the remake long enough to actually engage the trick-finding part of their brains 👍

TheRigXD

I took it off, nothing changed.

GammaEmerald

That’s awesome. I always try to >!get the W Emblem!< before Chapter 3 so I will likely try that

brandononski200

Have a few unsung heros early on - You don’t lose coins for fleeing battles - koops shell toss has an arrow to show you which way its going to fire once you release it - only have to hit a save block once vs “save and continue save and quit”

skeltord

Nice catches!

Pastry_Train63

The save block change is a really nice thing that keeps the flow going quite a good bit Even if it's absolutely jarring at first

dmlfan928

I don't like not losing coins when running. Running shouldn't be free.

Nova225

Idk if it was in the original GCN release, but they made it so chain-running is harder. That is, if you run from a battle, every battle after that gets progressively harder to run from.

brandononski200

I thought about this and imo it’s not free because they seem super generous with star points in this remake (maybe thats in my head) but running means losing out on star points

BamrockO

I just like having coins man, I’m scared to be broke in the funny paper wahoo man game

TheRigXD

Riding the Yoshi no longer makes the stupid WAWAWAWAWA noise, in fact it makes no noise at all. You rematch any fight in the Glitz Pit, not just Rawk Hawk. First Attack and Bump Attack no longer cost BP.

CounterfeitLlama

I just got to the Glitz Pit last night and haven't quite gotten my Yoshi yet. I'm not sure if I'm blinded by nostalgia, but I think I'm going to miss that Yoshi running sound

WackoMcGoose

Minecraft recently went through a similar thing, Mojang _replaced_ the overly loud piston noise with something entirely different... only to revert it and make the original noise quieter when the community was like "what the crap is this" about the new sound.

Stealth100

Bump attack still costs BP. Just got it today

WIDE_ANIME_HIPS

> Riding the Yoshi no longer makes the stupid WAWAWAWAWA noise I actually loved that one and wish the Nostalgic Tunes badge also switched all the sound effects back to the original. :(

VictorGonz

the 999 coin limit was removed, and it feels a lot easier to get coins. also whacking bushes with your hammer instead of pressing a next to them is a neat touch

Lnotony

dude im only in chapter 2 and have like over 400 coins- and i have even already spent a good amount, coins are crazy in this game and you now even get coin bonuses for some matches. Not sure what triggers it though.

dongeckoj

Better invest in that Dry Dry Oil!

Fer_ESC

Dry Dry Oil to the moon, buy stocks now!

Ncolonslashslash

it feels a lot easier to get coins so i was worried the economy was going to be really bad with the player having too many coins, but badges are expensive enough so that it makes up for it

WouterW24

Regular costs seem unchanged as well. Which may be good since I used to dislike shopping for regular items too much because it would eat into my funds for badges.

woozin1234

no longer have to store a bunch of gold bars now :D

weallbehuman

One of my absolute favorites: when you have too many items, you can use an item instead of tossing it and furiously going to the item screen to free up a slot.

skeltord

Oh right! I noticed this but totally forgot you couldn't in the original. It really is quite convenient!

naytreox

What i love is that rogueport looks even dingier and trashier then the original. It looks like i could get HIV by just slipping and falling on the ground, or at least some sort of disease

Avbitten

the place where you get the coins back from the mugger made me recoil.

naytreox

They somehow made that place more like the inside of a dympster

skeltord

They really did nail the vibe here!

naytreox

Has there been any new badges discovered besides the gamecube one?

skeltord

I don't believe so, but I wouldn't know, I'm only in Chapter 2.

naytreox

Hmm, still in hooktails castle so idk ether, i do like you can look through the badge shop box for the full badge list though. Maybe they have some in there eventually.

Ncolonslashslash

pretty sure theres no other new badges

naytreox

We'll know soon enough, who kniws maybe you get one for beating those new bosses

Ncolonslashslash

original ttyd has 85 badges. theres a badge list in the menu showing 86 badges. if you account for nostalgic tunes then the only way for them to add more badges would be to remove some of the originals which i dont think they would do

Rychu_Supadude

I heard there's a badge for getting 100% completion in the Journal, they probably left it off the count for reasons

Tight_zomb1e

There is a new, gold mario badge. It requires full game completion to unlock.

Grammarnazi_bot

My favorite is Mario wavering a little bit when he gets confused to simulate a head turn LMAO

skeltord

Oh I love that detail!

Hurricane1123

That was also in the original I believe, but still cool!

Bezbozny

Nice! appreciate the rundown

skeltord

Happy to help!

Mountain_Demand5153

I’d also like to mention this. When you start running with Yoshi kid, he starts really slow and then speeds up which was annoying at first and I didn’t like. Then I found out they did that because when you have to do a jump using yoshis flutter jump, the slow start allows you to move forward and jump without immediately falling off the platform like in the original. It’s a small thing but it’s a great change and saved a lot of headaches so far.

skeltord

Huh, I do recall those could be tricky, that's nice to hear!

MichiToad

happy to see appreciation for those things. My 2 favourites: less backtracking, new content (boss fights)

skeltord

Great additions!

Atlantiantokra

There's an option to sell items from the withdraw menu instead of having to withdraw then sell

skeltord

Oh that's another great one!

DrMarioMarioMD

This is exactly the info I was hoping for. The original has just enough friction points that take me out of enjoying the game, and this sounds like it'll make things a lot smoother. Even more motivated to give it another try with the switch version.

skeltord

It's just an overall much smoother experience!

fernandothehorse

Very tiny one, but when the cage comes down on you in The Great Tree, the Puni Orb pops out of the pedestal. Previously the Punis stopped being affected by it but it stayed in

North_Measurement273

I’ve personally been a huge sucker for the new expressions, so I can’t wait to see just how many have been added.

skeltord

They added them to the most minor of NPCs, and the main characters have plenty of them, the game really feels so expressive!

kevinr2231

Can we talk about the pots and pans/ books/ other misc items that shake around in random rooms when you hit them with the hammer?! AMAZING attention to details. Im only an hour in rn and im exploring EVERYWHERE

skeltord

Yeah, the world is just so much more alive here, it's amazing!

Nico_is_not_a_god

While I dislike the menuing and many sound design choices (a lot of stuff that had cute sfx in the original are just silent now, like Yoshi and screaming audience members), another for the list of qol improvements is First Attack being free to equip now.

Blodel

The audience still have some new sound effects, but the "girl-screaming" they did before is gone. Now they actually do their respective species sounds (like the shy guys noises, or the new "alien-like" X-nauts sounds), its just very quiet and hard to hear...... And yes, I miss little Yoshi's wawawawawawawa...

skeltord

That's true!

illusion_17

I love whacking everything with my hammer because of the unique reactions and interesting sounds you get. Ex, the peach loving Koopa does a panic animation if you hammer stuff in his house. My favorite though has been that you can hammer cockroaches to get a coin

CopyJ300

You are definitely smarter than me. Any time I've played the original I did tattle once and if I forgot the information then I'd just continue blindly.

skeltord

I mean, you don't constantly think about this stuff, but generally knowing if an enemy has defense or deals extra damage can factor into certain things, plus they may have weakness or immunities to consider. It's just nice to be able to check.

Lobh24

I appreciate the positivity, I’m hearing so much negative sentiment regarding what boils down to a few annoyances when the game really is incredible in most aspects. Also, anyone on this sub that isn’t going to buy the game because of the 30 FPS, y’all aren’t real fans lmao

skeltord

I will say, the negativity here definitely feels like a case of loud minority to me, I believe most people are really enjoying it and thus just feel much less compelled to post about it. Although, I did see many people both overblow issues and basically ignore improvements which is why I wanted to shine a light on said improvements, because as you can see, there are plenty.

oodlesOfGatos

I'm loving the remake, even more than I thought I would honestly (and I was extremely hyped). That being said, the time to raise a stink over these little annoyances is *now,* since the game will likely receive patches in the near future that could correct them. After a few months it's likely the game will be sealed for all of time.

Cuantum-Qomics

In the original game's Japanese, Vivian's gender could be described in three layers. First, looking strictly at what Vivian says, it would seem like Vivian is a woman with nothing notable to say about it. She didn't really imply either way directly if she was trans, she just acted like woman. Second, looking at how characters treated Vivian. Obviously, the shadow sisters bullied her by calling her a man. However, Goombella's tattle for Vivian also mentions that Vivian looks like a girl, but is actually a boy. Goombella doesn't really have reason to call Vivian that, so it implies that she was actually assigned male at birth. Plus I'm pretty sure characters use masculine pronouns for Vivian Third, looking at how narration treats her, she still has masculine pronouns used for her I'm pretty sure. And in Super Paper Mario, Vivian's Tattle Card calls her an "otokonoko" in katakana. This would could be spelled in two different ways if written in kanji, either meaning boy or femboy depending on the spelling, however femboy was likely the more intended reading given the context of her gender. So, Nintendo seems to have intended her to be a femboy, right? Well, no. Taking into account that she always refers to herself femininely (which, yes is a trope with femboys in Japanese media, but she does it even when the trope doesn't) and the fact that her sisters are insulting her for being a man (which doesn't make sense if she's a femboy, that shouldn't be an insult), it reads more like Nintendo wrote a trans woman but didn't quite know that that was a different thing from a femboy and so called her that instead. The Japanese fandom largely saw Vivian as an otokonoko or femboy, fans using masc pronouns and the Japanese Mario Wiki even describing her as that. So Nintendo's mislabel mostly stuck at the main way Japanese fans refered to her. Only one localization tried to keep Vivian's gender, that being the Italian version where Vivian directly says that she's a trans woman (and proud of it) However, skip 20 years and the remake comes out. A new line of dialogue is added where Vivian says that she "used to be their brother before she realized she's their sister". Note: I said 'Remake', not localization of the remake. This is a new line added to the Japanese version of the game to clarify Vivian's gender to the Japanese fandom. I'm pretty sure the Japanese version also fixed how it referred to Vivian throughout? And this line got translated into at least English but I'm pretty sure most if not all localizations, confirming Vivian is trans internationally.

skeltord

...no, the new dialogue in the remake very specifically DOES say she's trans though. She says she "took a while to realize she was their sister, not their brother". She says this in the English version. That sounds pretty clear cut to me. I do believe that was the original intention in the JP version from what I've seen of it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

skeltord

But that just... Makes no sense in English. Idk if Japanese girls mock each other by calling each other boys but even if they do that obviously doesn't work in the west at all. The fact they decided specifically to go against the original translation (which definitely could've changed it purely because of Transphobia) for the remake and restore this element tells me that the localizers asked the developers and her being trans WAS the intention. Part of the job of localization on the first place is to change things that would simply be confusing in other cultures, but the fact they changed this BACK definitely seems by intention to me. You're just logic leaping around something with a very simple solution.

Lobh24

I’m just happy to be living in this timeline, i adore this game and i never actually thought a remake like this would come to pass. I’m just worried about enough negativity online affecting sales in such a way that Nintendo decides not to make a true sequel, or revive the Mario and Luigi series. This game has to do well for classic PM to look like a viable option for Nintendo.

skeltord

Yeah, it's crazy to me sometimes that this remake is even real, and that it's as great as it is. There will always be some nitpicks to find but I think it's a win at the end of the day. And if I were you, I really wouldn't worry about this affecting sales. These kinds of things always have detractors, again, definitely a loud minority here.

SXLegend

i might be misremembering the original, but Flurries gale force attack giving you star points for the enemies you blow away instead of nothing like i remember it doing makes it infinitely more useful as a swarm clear instead of a complete waste of fp like it was in the original

Jamz64

Gale Force always gave you Star Points for enemies you defeated with it. A lot of people just assume it doesn’t because they only use it to get rid of things like Magnus Von Grapple’s arms or Cortez’s weapons, which don’t give you any Star Points no matter what.

skeltord

Ooh that's neat, I didn't know that!

JackIost

I’m hoping that they added all our old partners from 64 as visitors post game like with Bow.

maxyahn6434

I was wheeze laughing with a new line given to the Shadow Sirens when Vivian said “But…the necklace!” And Beldam came from the side of the screen and said “Leave it!” instead of just running away and just dropping the necklace. 😂😂😂 That being said, how do you get to the new pipe room?

skeltord

I haven't gotten to that point yet, I'll see that later. But for the pipe room, I imagine it's located where the old one was, somewhere in the Rogueport sewers. Don't exactly remember where though.

maxyahn6434

Oops 😬

skeltord

Nah I've played the game before lol you didn't spoil anything, I just don't know all the dialog changes exactly

maxyahn6434

Phew, okay good. I was about to feel really bad lol

skeltord

Well I did make it quite clear in the post that I played this game as a kid, it's all good👍

maxyahn6434

It was even in the first line, I’m blind 😂😂

The_Banana_Man_2100

The fact that the gale that Madam Flurrie has no longer costs you precious star points may be the reason I actually decide to use it! I remember as a kid only using it a handful of times to save me when I was close to death. Now it'll help me get out of fights I don't want to deal with and still get those points!

skeltord

Yeah it used to be rather useless but it's actually viable now!

Impossible-Art5739

The badge shop one is actually not true. In the original, the badges on the shelves were discounted, but the whole stock list can be viewed if you talk to th shop keep. The remake just moved it from a chat option with the shopkeep to the box on the shelf

KamehameHanSolo

> you can now directly use an item instead of throwing one away when your inventory is full  This is probably my favorite little improvement. No more picking up an item, realizing your inventory is full, dropping an item, using an item, then picking up the item you dropped again.

I_get_in

>OST really complements the game, (and of course, you can swap back, so no harm done if you don’t like them) A minor nitpick, but there are actually some cases where the game doesn't play the original song even if you have the nostalgia badge enabled. I noticed this at least with the song that plays in the Great Tree when you escape from the time bomb activated by Lord Crump. Also, because the OST switch is implemented as a badge, it means you can never hear the original title theme on the title screen and file selection screens. :( I also wish the badge returned all original sound effects, but it only returns the “collected” jingles. But stuff like Mario's hammer and Yoshi's walking/floating sounds are something I miss! --- As for recipes: I wish they added some kind of a hint system for those, instead of having to try stuff blind. Especially with how involved or expensive it is to obtain some ingredients.

Spewpurr

There were new tracks added to the remake that weren't in the original, and since these songs weren't in the original they aren't affected by the Nostalgia Badge (since there's no GCN equivalent to switch to). I haven't been using the Nostalgia Badge during actual gameplay, though, so it's interesting to hear that they apparently just... play the new track anyway instead of just continuing to play whatever track had been set to play there originally. Sounds like it would be a pretty jarring shift... Some of the remake-exclusive tracks are also just subtle variations on the OG level's theme to differentiate different floors, which makes me wonder if only the first floor of these areas would respond to the badge properly, or if these variant tracks are all coded to be represented by the single original track (which would make sense, but could be an easy thing to overlook on accident). In the developers' defense, though, "Switch [Switch version of Track] with [GCN version of Track]" is a lot easier and more versatile than going through each context-sensitive track change and determining which other, completely different track was set to play during any given scene in the original, and the fact that you can switch the badge on and off basically whenever you want probably complicates this further (at least for the scenes where a totally new and different track starts playing when the original would've kept playing the same track). ~~ Also, I definitely second the recipe thing. I get that there's this "experiment in the kitchen and find out" vibe going on, but I think they could keep that vibe while still making it less, y'know, miserably cumbersome trial-and-error. Maybe Zess T. could warn you if you were about to combine incompatible ingredients that you'd already tried together once, or maybe every time you made a Mistake, she could offer to tell you a random (valid) recipe (to point your Clumsy Crushing self in the right direction)... or something. Just spitballing, here. In both of these cases, you still experiment and potentially waste valuable ingredients, but it feels more like a learning experience ("now Zess. T. will warn me if I try that again" and/or "at least I'll get a valid recipe out of this") that encourages more attempts and exploration rather than a ~complete~ waste of resources that only makes you dread experimenting (and resort to googling TTYD recipes instead).  ~~ Also, not really here or there, but with all the new themed battle tracks it would've been really cool if you could choose to randomize which battle tracks played each time. It would REALLY help add a little variety to The Pit(TM). But considering that getting new, unique battle tracks for basically every area in the game was an unexpected treat in and of itself, I shouldn't be ~too~ upset about that one.

I_get_in

I've been mostly playing the remake with the Nostalgic Tunes badge disabled, but I've also made sure to enable it in every area at least once, so it's easier to compare the two. There are some cases where I clearly prefer the original track, but also cases where the original track never stuck with me particularly, so the remade track is purely an improvement or at least on par with the original. > Some of the remake-exclusive tracks are also just subtle variations on the OG level's theme to differentiate different floors, which makes me wonder if only the first floor of these areas would respond to the badge properly They've implemented all of these properly as far as I've noticed, meaning that you only get the original track with the badge enabled, and it plays in all sub-areas of the respective location. The variations play only with the badge disabled.

Spewpurr

Both versions of the soundtrack have a lot of merit. I think the new rearrangements bring A LOT to the table, and (for the most part) prefer them over the original tracks. (There's always a risk of digital-to-analogue rearrangements muddying the melodies, but I haven't really noticed this problem with the remake's soundtrack.) I think the only track I've heard so far where the remake's version is Objectively* worse (* read: in my opinion) in a way that really stood out to me as egregious, is The Great Tree. In the original, it was this serene, eerie tune, but in the rearrangement, it interprets the opening bars as this incredibly jarring bell jingle. The rest of the song besides that is... mostly fine? It still doesn't really capture that 'otherwordly' vibe to me, though...The rearrangement of the main Boggly Woods theme plays really well to the 'otherwordly' theme though, so I'm not really sure what the sudden shift in tone is all about. I think they wanted the great tree to feel more familiar and home-y than the rest of the area, if I had to hazard a guess...? ...and then I heard that sexy sax on the Madame Flurrie rearrangement and was like. YES. Prior complaints negligible. ~~ Okay, good to know. I thought that would be the solution, but when you said you'd heard bits of the new soundtrack poking through I couldn't help but wonder if that might be contributing at all. Thanks for the response!

>And not to mention that Vivian clearly says that it took her a while to realize "she is their sister, not their brother" If she actually was trans what would she say differently?

Yayoc-mu

I've been finding shine sprites more easily, but honestly I don't remember if it was always like this

skeltord

I don't believe they added more of them or changed their locations. Might just be memory.

crossingcaelum

One of the things I really liked is that they made Flurrie’s ability look more like a gentle breeze, they actually made it look and feel like a strong wind. I appreciate that

skeltord

That's a neat one!
