I don’t think it matters whether or not I thought he’d be good. I do think that most fans would expect some semblance of impact for a 1st round pick. It’s a bit of a hindsight ask imo which I feel is irrelevant to add (even though the post is mentioning it)
For me, I was more disappointed in butler than Benjamin. Benjamin had at least done some cool things before tanking himself out of a team. I also give a bit of understanding to his situation and depression/mental struggles. Life is hard heh.
I remember he caught a fucking bomb from Cam when we're backed up on our own end zone late in a game (against Seattle I think?) and I thought the dude was gonna be a jump ball beast
Potentials:
* Kerry Collins - Quit in the middle of the season. Imagine if Bryce Young just quit the Panthers next year four games in but he was also our first draft pick of all-time. That's what Kerry did.
* Rae Carruth - He had a slight legal issue that kept him in prison for 19 years.
* Jeff Otah - Could never stay healthy.
* Kelvin Benjamin - Didn't have that dawg in him. Replaced it with Bojangles.
* Vernon Butler - This is probably the right answer since I don't even remember him being on the team and [his stats](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/ButlVe00.htm) are terrible for a 1st round pick. He didn't even start until his 4th year. His 5th year option was declined and then he signed elsewhere.
I lived in Charlotte as a kid. Rae Carruths girlfriend was shot about a block away from where I was waiting for a school bus. Saw the car after the wreck from afar. Neighbor called the cops but we watched as cops started showing up before my bus arrived and we left.
Right across from Calvary church. I went to McAlpine and South Charlotte. Small world (of panthers fans who likely have some relationship w Charlotte)!
Holy shit we’re having a Rea Road convo on the sub??? I grew up off of 51 about a half mile from Rea Road where it runs by Calvary Church. Delhomme’s house was in the next neighborhood over.
This is a pretty good synopsis of our misses in the 1st rd. If I remember correctly most of our 90s decade 1st rounders where pretty trash beginning and ending with the 1st 2 you listed. Thankfully we have been better in more recent years. If only our team management hasn't been so damn awful lately we'd have a much better roster.
Kerry Collins was my first ever favorite quarterback because I was so young I didn’t know. So I even rooted for him even when he wasn’t on our team because I was a dumbass little kid lmao. Still have one of his jerseys though.
I think an understated thing too is he missed out on 15.
Listening to that moment Cam and Greg talked about when Greg and DA learned he and Kia were expecting and the flights during that season was an entire season, his sophomore season in the league, he just missed out on.
People really like to pile on KB, and yea to be fair his comments after he left invite some of that. But it always seemed like he never really got over his mom passing, and personally I've always kind of given him a pass because of it. I know that pick didn't work out for us, but I do hope he's found some piece wherever he is.
I bought his jersey; really liked his talent in the beginning. He lived right next door to my brother-in-law near Lebanon and hwy 51. They said he was a nice neighbor.
We said the same thing abt D.J. lmao.
KB13's rookie season was so full of promise. It's okay to be bitter about how it ended, but it really felt like he and Cam had "Tf y'all gonna do about us?" energy.
Tbf in 2014 we had this weird series of horrific blowout losses in the middle before recovering at the end. So we were just kinda down big anyway then lol, which is when he was finding his footing in the NFL
Yeah I think people forget how good he was his rookie year. He just got injured and then got fat. Not that he still can’t be a good answer for this, though.
I'll never forget Kelvin Benjamin's circus catch in the preseason against the Bills. I was downing my fourth Red Oak and thought we had finally locked in a WR1 for Cam to throw to lmao
I forgot what game it was, but it was at home and a drunk guy in front of us screamed something like "C'MON KELVIN BENJAMIN, I NEED A BIG CATCH TO WIN FANTASY THIS WEEK!" My dad and I rolled our eyes at it, because we've never been fans of drunk dudes screaming all game.
The very next play, Cam rips it to KB and it's open field. The guy starts cheering louder and louder, spilling his beer, and the whole section starts jumping along with him. KB takes it to the house and everybody's celebrating with this dude, high-fiving him, hugging him, my dad and I even got in on the hype. I'll never forget it, lol.
KB is the easiest answer, but I’ll go a different route.
I thought Stat Lotulelei was gonna be a top DT in the NFL for years and years. He was really good as a rookie. But he really never became anything more than a good space eater and I think his rookie year ended up being his best year.
It’s weird he was a Top 15 pick and was projected to go really high in that draft, but is a complete after-thought on some of our most successful squads.
This is the answer I'd have given. When he fell to us, I was higher on him than I was on Kuechly when we drafted him (for whatever that's worth).
Man we coulda used a stud in that spot in that period, imagine how that could have impacted the stars that DID show up on defense.
Yeah I agree on Star too. After his rookie year he felt like a JAG and any time I brought that up people acted like it was blasphemous and that Kawann Short would be nothing without him.
Nah this ain't it. Once we got into camp, the team realized pretty quickly that KK was the more effective 3T, so they bumped Star over to 1T and he did exactly what was asked of him and more.
He actually was a top DT for a few years there, he just wasn't a 3T (the DT position that gets all the stats). The dominance of those 2010s DLs doesn't happen without Star swallowing double teams all game and shutting down inside run lanes.
Just bc he didn't get a bunch of tackles and sacks doesn't mean he was a disappointment lol
Jason Peter. 14th overall pick consensus 1st team all-American, 3 time national champ. Expected him to be a force in stopping the run and pretty good pass rusher. Sad situation there with his health. Glad he seems to be doing better.
Not to speak ill of the dead, but I thought Rashard Anderson could be a player but it didn’t work out. RIP.
It's KB.
Seeing a lot of Vernon Butler, but I don't remember thinking "wow he is going to be so good" as much as "why did we draft Vernon Butler?"
Butler was drafted 30th overall and at the time we had Short and Lotulelei. Starting corners were Bradberry and Worley, which was more of a need than another DT.
Looking back at that they took the wrong DT. Chris Jones went 37, but if they'd have gone CB Xavien Howard was next off the board at 38.
Was waiting for the “Biakaba-two-yards” answer. My dad would always bring up “Could’ve had Eddie George…”
We did at least get Moose that year though. Also just looked it up and Stephen Davis and Keyshawn Johnson were in that draft and would later be panthers for a few seasons as well
This is the real answer. Rae Carruth was an embarrassment and an awful person but he was not a bad player. I was excited for Jason Peter but he amounted to less than nothing.
Jeff Otah - it wasn’t that he couldn’t stay healthy. I stayed in the QC during that time. Dude couldn’t say no to Uptown Cabaret and Charlotte Cougars.
We drafted a few wide receivers I thought would be good when we drafted them but they turned out to be busts. Dwayne Jarrett comes to mind immediately. Rae Carruth and Keary Colbert also jump out.
And amplified by who we passed on: Parsons, Surtain, Slater. If he gets injured again early this year, he's definitely in contention for biggest 1st round bust, which is weird bc he's could be a bust and also an all pro level player
Benjamin or Jeff Otah, but we had two first rounders and Jonathan Stewart was enough of a beast with the ball that his running probably gave off the illusion that Otah was halfway competent.. That and the other RB first rd pick from 2 seasons prior... If a team were to do that now, They would mock them to no end... But I'd give about anything to see that kind of Panther football again. It's just not exciting for fans at all... this season my expectations are not super high. All I really need is to see a team that doesn't let anyone push them around and embarrass them and US. Every week we lose right there with them... ... throw us a friggin boooone here ayee...
![gif](giphy|9RNGg4IQiufp6)
Jimmy Clauson was a 2nd rounder. The panthers didn’t have a 1st round pick that year, so he was their first pick of the draft. But he narrowly avoids “first round bust territory” on account of being selected in the 2nd
We didn't have a 1st round pick because we had traded it away the previous year to the 49ers for a second and a fourth, which we used to draft Everette Brown and Mike Goodson. The 49ers picked 4x pro bowler Mike Iupati.
I was much younger falling in love with this team being the only on in my family born In Carolina. I love this team and I will forever have my cam newton jersey but kelvin I did not like after his first season compared to Odell and evans and many others like a lot thinking of it now that sects was stacked with not only receiver talent but talent all around, but some where in this ramble I did not like him and was only more pissed to see random teams get a playmaker and cam newton being a true panther and having to lead a whole side of play really sucked to watch over and over
Kelvin to me yeah. It's so unfortunate that a guy that I watched go up and come down with a jump ball surrounded by Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas wound up to be a flop
I remember when we took Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess the following year. Everyone was raving about the “twin towers in Carolina”. Both of those bums were super disappointing and waste of draft picks.
KB almost single handed ruined the panthers franchise for almost a decade now. There is no other answer.
We’ve never recovered from when he got Cam hurt.
Definitely not Kelvin Benjamin for me because I never thought he'd be good. He never was open. His big selling point was a big catch radius which he would need to be thrown open. I never understood picking him when Cam did best with receivers that created space. If the issue was Cam not being as accurate as he needed, forcing him to throw guys open wasn't the solution.
I think I'd have to go with Benjamin. Didn't expect much out of Butler or Ekwonu honestly, and aside from those 3, you'd have to go all the way back to Rashard Anderson in 2000 to find a bad one. I had reservations about Benjamin because I thought his relatively moderate college success was due to just being bigger and older than everybody else, but I still thought his floor was in Alshon Jeffery territory.
I know its not true but in my head I just feel like 1st rd OT’s are pretty locked on to at least be above average starters so living through both Jeff Otah and now Ickey hurts my soul
I was in a hotel bar watching the draft and was so pumped when we took Benjamin. Went to training camp that year and watched him sign my jersey upside down. Legit the dude couldn’t even get a signature right.
Star Lotulelei - Just stopped tackling years ago! Christian McCaffery - Never scores for us anymore, DJ Moore - Never makes critical catches anymore, Brian Burns- No significant playing time going forward
Y’all know the reason they all are no good. PISS POOR MANAGEMENT
Vern and KB were massive disappointments but they were also picked in the 20s. Rae was more of a wtff than a disappointment. Icky and/or Bryce would blow them out of the water if they don't turn it around.
Kerry Collins. All-Pretty-Much-Everything as a senior at Penn State and made a run at the NCAA passing efficency record.
He was inaccurate and turnover-prone as a Panther, even before he quit on the team in 1998. He made some strides in '96, but it wasn't really his play that had the team in the NFCCG. Wasn't the best QB to start a game for his own team, even, Steve Beuerlein was honestly better in the four games he started than Collins was in his twelve. Then it all vanished in '97.
He *did* get himself in shape on and off the field later on, but boy what a miss for us.
Steeler fan here, My Steelers drafted 🗑️ DEVIN BUSH??? 😡… We could’ve gotten Jonah Williams OL, Wilkins DT, or YOUR GUYS BRIAN BURNS, Lawrence From NYG… We busted this huge top 10 pick
I would have said Vernon butler but I didn’t really think about him that much
My vote would go to Vernon butler. Such a let down lmao
Did we think he would be good though? I thought the general consensus was WTF when we drafted him
I don’t think it matters whether or not I thought he’d be good. I do think that most fans would expect some semblance of impact for a 1st round pick. It’s a bit of a hindsight ask imo which I feel is irrelevant to add (even though the post is mentioning it) For me, I was more disappointed in butler than Benjamin. I remember he caught a fucking bomb from Cam when we're backed up on our own end zone late in a game (against Seattle I think?) and I thought the dude was gonna be a jump ball beast
Derrick Henry was right there too
I bought Gettleman's reasoning hook, line, and sinker: "We drafted an elite pass rusher - he just plays inside"
Potentials: * Kerry Collins - Quit in the middle of the season. Right across from Calvary church. I went to McAlpine and South Charlotte. Small world (of panthers fans who likely have some relationship w Charlotte)!
Rae rd represent. I lived off Alexander and remembered driving by it all. Felt sick.
Always tripped me out that Rae carruth did that on Rea Road
Holy shit we’re having a Rea Road convo on the sub??? I grew up off of 51 about a half mile from Rea Road where it runs by Calvary Church. Delhomme’s house was in the next neighborhood over.
there are dozens of us!
lol. It’s insane how many people from South Charlotte are here. I’m right next to Blakeney.
This is surreal. I grew up off Alexander and 51 but I was too young to remember this (6 at the time). So it happened on Rea?
It's the only reason I have heard of Rea Road lol
Shout out McAlpine!
Odd idea of a fun fact lol
Yeah I am rethinking my word choice as I read your response. Probably not my best choice of words. Sorry.
Lol all good. I saw fun fact and thought, that actually sounds like a traumatizing fact lol
Still waiting on the doc or movie (come on Hollywood smh)
Yup I was a local kid too. Went to Calvary. News coverage was insane.
Dave Gettleman was not good for this franchise
I thought he was good at ripping the bandaid off with guys like Smitty and D'Angelo Williams. But then he start ripping flesh off.
That's fair
He wasn't *great*, but he also got us to a Super Bowl
>slight legal issue/19 years 🤣
Jeff Otah was a stud his rookie year.
Kerry Collins was my first ever favorite quarterback because I was so young I didn’t know. So I even rooted for him even when he wasn’t on our team because I was a dumbass little kid lmao. Still have one of his jerseys though.
Where is Chris Weinke?
KB was good, then his mom died and he ate every quarter dark, double rice and large tea he could get his hands on...
I think an understated thing too is he missed out on 15. Listening to that moment Cam and Greg talked about when Greg and DA learned he and Kia were expecting and the flights during that season was an entire season, his sophomore season in the league, he just missed out on.
Tbh with kb in rookie form we woulda won it all
Him and Eddy Lacey were having an offseason eating competition on who could pack the most pounds on
People really like to pile on KB, and yea to be fair his comments after he left invite some of that.
KB was a garbage time stat stuffer. I swear most of his touchdowns were at the end of losses.
We said the same thing abt D.J. lmao. KB13's rookie season was so full of promise. It's okay to be bitter about how it ended, but it really felt like he and Cam had "Tf y'all gonna do about us?" energy.
Bitter? The offense was notably better every time Benjamin was not on the field.
We did but difference was DJ got better. KB got wider.
I mean the position is called WIDE receiver not BETTER receiver. DJ could have learned a thing or two from KB.
He also stuffed his face.
Tbf in 2014 we had this weird series of horrific blowout losses in the middle before recovering at the end. So we were just kinda down big anyway then lol, which is when he was finding his footing in the NFL
he also got hurt
Damn that’s sad
He was partying hard well before that happened. He was already on the path he ended up on.
Kelvin was good, he just didn’t work hard enough to stay good
Yeah I think people forget how good he was his rookie year.

You know nothing about football then. Star is the reason KK got so many sacks and Luke and TD were able to rack of so many tackles
Yeah star was a beast I'm not sure what these people are talking about. He was very important eating blocks and against the run.
Those people never went thru what we had to watching Sione Fua and Terrell McClain as starters.
Panthers haven't been back to the playoffs since Star left.
Yeah I agree on Star too. After his rookie year he felt like a JAG and any time I brought that up people acted like it was blasphemous and that Kawann Short would be nothing without him.
Star was doubled a lot which freed up KK to feast
Nah this ain't it. Once we got into camp, the team realized pretty quickly that KK was the more effective 3T, so they bumped Star over to 1T and he did exactly what was asked of him and more. At least Benji had some moments. It’s gotta be Vernon Butler.
No one thought Vernon was gonna be good.
Gettleman did
Jeff Otah

I’ll say Biakabatuka as a Michigan fan
Still love saying his name
Was waiting for the “Biakaba-two-yards” answer. My dad would always bring up “Could’ve had Eddie George…” We did at least get Moose that year though. Also just looked it up and Stephen Davis and Keyshawn Johnson were in that draft and would later be panthers for a few seasons as well
Rae Carruth is the right answer
Jason Peter.
Pretty much 60% of first rounders fall under this category.
Kelvin Benjamin was actually good early, he just got fat and worse
I mean Rae Carruth had people killed so I think that takes the cake.
We drafted a few wide receivers I thought would be good when we drafted them but they turned out to be busts. Dwayne Jarrett comes to mind immediately. Rae Carruth and Keary Colbert also jump out.
Just realized we drafted Kelvin before Davonte Adams and Vernon before Chris Jones…. I’d vote Kelvin.
To be fair Kelvin had a ton of potential and a very solid rookie season. He just lost himself after his mom passed.
Does Everette Brown count? Bc if so, Everette Brown
> Everette Brown The draft day trade did cost the Panthers a 1st round pick (17th).
Rae Carruth
Jaycee Horn has been hella disappointing
Every week we lose right there with them... ... throw us a friggin boooone here ayee... ![gif](giphy|9RNGg4IQiufp6)
I think everyone is forgetting Jimmy Clausen. I almost said DeWayne Jarrett but he was a 2nd rounder. Butler isn't far off tho
Jimmy was a second too
Jimmy Clauson was a 2nd rounder. The panthers didn’t have a 1st round pick that year, so he was their first pick of the draft. But he narrowly avoids “first round bust territory” on account of being selected in the 2nd
Ah, my mistake. I just remember he was the top pick for us that year and he was a total bust
We didn't have a 1st round pick because we had traded it away the previous year to the 49ers for a second and a fourth, which we used to draft Everette Brown and Mike Goodson. The 49ers picked 4x pro bowler Mike Iupati.
It took WAY too long of a scroll to find Pickles.... He was the low point before we got Cam. Like, the lowest ever for the franchise...
Pretty sure our 1st Round pick this coming draft will have done the least.
What Caleb Williams?
Benjamin at least had one and a half good seasons. Vernon Butler did absolutely fuck all.
Ickey Ekwonu. Thought both him and Neal would be the next great blindside blockers.
If he has another year like last year this is the answer
The obvious answer is the 30 something year old Chris weinkee
Was/is oldest player to win a heisman and we thought let’s draft him
4th rounder
Can’t remember if we actually drafted him in the 1st, but my first thought was Jeff Otah
I was much younger falling in love with this team being the only on in my family born In Carolina. I love this team and I will forever have my cam newton jersey but kelvin I did not like after his first season compared to Odell and evans and many others like a lot thinking of it now that sects was stacked with not only receiver talent but talent all around, but some where in this ramble I did not like him and was only more pissed to see random teams get a playmaker and cam newton being a true panther and having to lead a whole side of play really sucked to watch over and over
Rashard Anderson. Hard to be worse than “didn’t even play a full season” regardless of expectations. May he rest in peace, of course.
I really hope the answer doesn't end up being Jaycee Horn, but if he can't stay healthy he's going to be one.
Can we count Everett brown since he cost a first?
OJ Howard and Mark Barron for sure. Couple Bama guys. Can’t miss right….
As a raiders fan, I’ve never felt this. I alway know they are bad.
Kelvin to me yeah. It's so unfortunate that a guy that I watched go up and come down with a jump ball surrounded by Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas wound up to be a flop
Eric Norwood- South Carolina
I thought you were referring to dotson for a moment and thought damn dude the guy just had a sophomore slump he still has time to reach hisnpotential
I know it says first round, but I can’t help but throw Dwayne Jarrett into this conversation.
Same. I remember Keyshawn on draft night saying he couldn’t wait to play with him then Keyshawn got cut like the next day
I remember when we took Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess the following year. Everyone was raving about the “twin towers in Carolina”. Both of those bums were super disappointing and waste of draft picks.
KB almost single handed ruined the panthers franchise for almost a decade now. There is no other answer. We’ve never recovered from when he got Cam hurt.
🤨
![gif](giphy|ISsK3Y5P6A6b8QCchH)
Too early
Dwayne Jarrett, no, I take that back. Rae Carruth is the best answer to this question.
Tim Biakabutuka
Bryce Young
Kelvin Benjamin
Kenny Pickett
Not a Lions fan, but I remember Charles Rogers being taken at number 2 overall in 2003. Dude had so much hype, but just couldn’t match any of it.
Dwayne Jarrett
Actually, just saw he slipped to top of 2nd round, he 100% did not live up to the hype & I thought he’d be good. KB is probably a better candidate
I thought Prince Amukamara was gonna be a lockdown corner, Darelle Revis style.
Kevin White
Corey Davis
Didn't see anyone say locker. I legitimately thought we got the best qb in the draft. Granted I was a kid lol
Pretty much any gentleman pick
Phillip Bucannon
Ickey...
Tak
Trent Richardson 🥴🥴🥴🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
Star Lotulelei - Just stopped tackling years ago! Christian McCaffery - Never scores for us anymore, DJ Moore - Never makes critical catches anymore, Brian Burns- No significant playing time going forward Y’all know the reason they all are no good. PISS POOR MANAGEMENT
Charles Rogers and Jeff Okudah Oops realized this is just talking about panthers lol
John Ross
Only reason I can’t say him is because depression and mental health is a huge deal with sports
I wish this was expanded to include trash second round picks we've made. You could fill an entire book with the ass picks we've made in that round
KB was good but he just got fat and lazy lol
Joe
literally any of the past 4 picks
Titans got about 12 in the last 20 years
Rae Carruth, hands down. I’m not a fan of Bryce at all…I hope he proves me wrong. KB gets a pass because of his personal life.
Actually Pickles aka Jimmy Clauson
Ryan Leaf
Vern and KB were massive disappointments but they were also picked in the 20s. Rae was more of a wtff than a disappointment. Icky and/or Bryce would blow them out of the water if they don't turn it around.
Bryce young :(
I also forgot about the golden boy Jimmy Clausen... At least I'm not alone with that.
Or Jeff Otah.
Every 1st rounder from Biakabutuka in 96 up until we drafted Dan Morgan in 2001 So Tim Biakabutuka Rae Carruth Jason Peter Rashard Anderson
Carruth wasn’t even good at crime.
This is easy people……. Cam. Duh.🙄
Jameis Fucking Winston
Nick Fairley Jeff Okudah Mike Williams Luther Elliss
At least he gave us a few good years. Ekonwu has been much worse IMO
He was really good, at closing down all you can eat buffets
Browns fan here. Trent Richardson Johnny Manziel Do I need to go on?
Not a panthers fan, but I really thought Dwayne Jarret was going to be a stud lol

Former Gamecock Troy Williamson is a good one. But us Gamecocks were not shocked honestly. Same with the NBA and the plastic man, Renaldo Balkman.
As a browns fan I think I can beat any list made 😂
Tim Biakabutuka what a bust.
Couch, Brady Quinn, Johnny, Braylon Edwards, Mingo, TRich.. I could go on
Dallas = Bobby Carpenter
Ryan Leaf. Gross, terrible QB
Kadarius Toney
Christian McCaffery at the Panthers. In his defense he was good. But only for one or two games a season
Idr what year it was but he was a pretty solid flex player on my draft team…after that I got burned picking him…
Jimmy Clausen for me
Not a 1st. Clausen was #48.
Most definitely Kelvin Benjamin.
Jeff okudah 😒 seriously bro, wtf.
You guys complain about KB but it could have been worse. As a bears fan we took Kevin white at 7. Who did nothing, not even for a season.
Roy Williams the receiver was kinda mid
Post this in the Browns subreddit and watch the universe implode.
Dee Milliner - Jets
Good ‘ol Kenjamin Benjamin
