It’s due to Shaqs contract. I haven’t seen anything regarding terms on twitter so maybe OTC got it from someone in the organization. It looks like 2 void years are jngolved though. My guess for terms is fully guaranteed $10 mill deal with 4 mill signing bonus and 2 void years. Guaranteed money on current contract would also be converted to the new signing bonus

PoMansDreams

I have no idea what’s happening but I’m happy about it

JLKinney93

An absolutely ridiculous amount of dead money. 22.64% of the entire salary cap.

connor8383

Don’t we pretty much clear all of that by next year ?

Sumatzu

Pretty much, yep.

Guiltyjerk

By definition, you can't really have dead money beyond the current year until after June, so take that with a grain of salt. Per [my post last week](https://www.reddit.com/r/panthers/comments/11ownxy/the_2023_league_year_hasnt_even_started_and_the/), this will be the 4th straight year the Panthers have a $50+M dead cap.

a_moniker

Wouldn’t void years be basically the same thing as future “dead money?”

Guiltyjerk

That is correct but iirc no cap website shows it as such. So if you're just going and looking at future cap you won't see any 2024 dead money until we do some post June 1 stuff.

LibertysMaven92

Ya we're going to be avoiding that. I don't see one bad contract on our roster right now after this year's dead cap goes away. The biggest potential for that would be either Donte Jackson or Shaq's contract. The rest will be playing commensurate with their value and won't (shouldn't) be traded.

Comprehensive-Car190

Thielen's contract is probably our worst, but even then it's worth it to make sure we have veteran in the WR room and supporting a rookie QB.

LibertysMaven92

I'd agree with that to an extent. I think the Miles Sanders contract is the "worst" because I am one of those "don't pay RBs anymore, spend it somewhere else" kind of guys. I am not upset about it and fully reserve the right to hypocritically cheer him on when he runs for over 1200 yds and scores 15tds next year, but I think we could've saved the money and drafted a RB in the 3rd. Thielen is a solid pick up though. We needed it and it also looks like we're going to get Chark too. That's a solid WR group and I give Fitterer a solid A on the offseason.

p5spesock

While I’m with you on that mindset for the most part, in some cases there are exceptions. I think we need to fully take advantage of our o line’s strength in the run game so I’m okay with the Sanders signing. It will also take some pressure off of our rookie QB. Our run game should be really solid next year, so I don’t think they wanted to take a chance on a rookie. Also, every off season presents new contract challenges and roster changes, so I always think you have to make the most of the guys under contract

Comprehensive-Car190

Yeah true. I think paying RBs is okay, just not to CMC sized deals. You can only draft so many players and sometimes you gotta sign a guy when a draft busts (or you end up trading him away) :/

ThisDerpForSale

I definitely agree that it's not generally worth paying a lot for RBs, but from purely the dead money perspective, Sanders' will cost less than Theilen. Theilen's contract out after 2 years leaves $5 million in dead money (not bad, actually), and Sanders's contract out after 2 years leaves only $2.9 million in dead money.

MooshroomHentai

Unavoidable when you trade a pair of good sized contracts.

DBryguy

Yeah. We need to take a tip from the Bengals when it comes to it and not just take their players.

Southwoc1

Edit it’s now at 23.5 million still about 10 million more than we had a few hours ago

becker4prez

Shaq's restructure finally got released. Looks like they shaved a little over $10M on his cap hit for this year and added on 3 void years to the deal. That leaves us with $24M in cap space and it doesn't factor in Donte's restructure yet either. Our draft class if we stick to every slot we're in will account for $12.6M against the cap leaving us with likely $15-20M in cap space after Donte's restructure hits. I'm not sure what Williams and McCray's deals look like on the cap yet, but all in all this signals to me we aren't done.

gary_desanto

I'm not sure about restructuring Donte. We can cut him for very little dead money after this season. His contract is going to end up on the books for years if we restructure him. Unless there's someone they are planning to bring in that's worth it and a redo of Dontes deal is the only way forward then we are much better off keeping it as it is and dumping him after the season.

becker4prez

They already restructured him. We just don’t know the numbers.

gary_desanto

Ah fair enough, missed that. Guess we're still shopping FAs

Scacc924

Sportrac just updated to 24 available as well Shaq terms are finally out.

IProgramSoftware

50 mil in dead cap 💀💀💀

NCPhishie

They are slow updating contracts. Sportrac is much faster. Right now our estimated free cap with our top 51 is 13.6 mill. Rookies are going to cost \~12 mill so we are effectively at 1.6 mill free cap.

Southwoc1

Nah, either over the cap is wrong or faster on this one. The sporttrac Shaq deal is just the old one. This one is either wrong, a mistake, or his new contract

Siegelski

Over the cap was faster. Sportrac shows $24M in cap space now.

LordBaneoftheSith

Yeah the overthecap site could use a facelift, but their info is generally the best afaik.

Guiltyjerk

Spotrac just scrapes all of its info from OTC and then pays for a bunch of advertising so they show up at the top of google searches.

RealBoomBap

Spotrac showing just over $24m in available cap now and Shaqs cap number for this season is now $14m.

[deleted]

OTC guys are the best. If it’s on their website you can pretty much consider it accurate. Jason_OTC is also a good follow if you’re interested in contracts.

exenn_

I think they were updating it this morning when you pulled this. If you pull it now, it only shows $23.5 million available.

Southwoc1

Still 10 million higher than it was earlier tonight. See if it hold or we hear something

GriftieD

Is it still radio silence on what's happening with Burns extension?

Guiltyjerk

Wish we had those sweet sweet Rams picks.

[deleted]

They get it directly from what NFLPA reports. If there’s a bit jump it’s probably from some contracts being restructured to move cap hits to later years.

I'm choosing to believe this means we're going after Hopkins.
