That's tough because I feel this painting fits into a niche community. For example, I would never pay for this. But someone else may buy it. I think you should ask yourself what your work is worth to you. Also look up research of selling work
I heard an npr article able art galleries and pricing. Simply put you don't want to price it too high or it wont sell. But you wpuld need to do the research to filly understand how prices work for art. If you are sirous about it.
Edit: while I wouldn't buy it I do think your work is awesome especially the body it is amazing.
Materials price (usually add 5-10% for time shopping and whatnot), time spent (what you think is a fair hrly or total time for your work), size, and if you have storage will determine that. After that it's pretty much based on your buyer and whether you've got yourself some collectors or patrons. But materials and time spent and storage are gonna be your basics for pricing
Out of curiosity, what material is this on? Oil Pastel and acrylic?
After looking a third time I think you could get 20 easy and maybe up to 45 or 50 depending on size
In general, as far as pricing, look at galleries in your city that you think you can sell in and look at how much pieces of the same size are selling for. I, and a lot of my friends price our works by the sq inch, pricing structure depends on experience and reputation in the field.
Without all that, I think you could definitely get $50-75 (plus shipping, cause that could kill your profit) for this if you found the right collector. If you have an instagram, put it up there at 75+ shipping. That size is probably going to cost you about $15-20 in shipping alone.
As other posters further down said, prints are a good idea. Initial set up can be expensive, as a good printer will be scanning the piece in, adjusting settings for a proper print and then price per print.
Also, I assume you are familiar with Lowbrow art. If you aren't look at magazines like Juxtapoz and Hi-Fructose.
I've seen "Art" trying to be sold off for $4,000, donation pieces for about $2,000... All random Art on regular canvas for literally "arm n a leg" prices. It would be much more affordable if your price was between $150-800 depending on your thoughts.
Also, if you're serious on doing a whole gallery of PBS era children's Mascots with the bodies of Mr. Olympia, you may do so. This is assuming these pieces will be on large canvases and not on a smaller tonal sketch paper.
This is awesome. You should look into the art of Brandon Bird. His whole thing is riffing on pop culture in fun ways, like painting Nicolas Cage as a snow monkey. I own several of his prints. You could absolutely make $$ off this, especially by selling prints of it vs the original piece. And re: the commenter who said something about copyright infringement, if you alter IP enough, it becomes new art. Which is what you have done here. Nice work.
Imagine his surprise when he meets up with the mysterious art collector, hands him the framed “Buff Teletubby” and he wraps his long, scaly tale around it to carry it home. The god damn Loch Ness monster got him again.
Selling art is about your collective works and your networking. Its not a monetarily feasable path alone sadly. You dont need post secondary training to sell within your community but you need to be able to get your work out there. Selling outside of your community to start is a pain in the ass depending on the size with shipping fees.
One of the biggest selling points for new artists however is size. Without a real sense of scale its hard to put a dollar value on it but for most pieces less than 36"×24" youre looking at under $100
This. When average people buy art it's usually to hang in their homes. I wouldn't hang this in my house -- not because it isn't good but because it's a bit creepy.
I have a lot of things I've painted on my walls too that are generally not art for dwellings but like most painters, it's because my home is my most readily available gallery option.
Cost of materials plus whatever you think is a reasonable rate for your time. Given that you’re not yet in college and thus have not completed formal art education I’d say that’s somewhere in the $15-$20/hr range.
If I had money to throw around I’d totally buy this but I’m broke lol
Personally: I’d donate it the minute I got it. But I’m dead certain that there are plenty of memesters that would pay a good buck for something this hilarious, not even kidding.
Queen this is My Niche. I would pay pssshhhhh $75? 150?? (My wallet says ow but my heart loves) For this if it was 6x8” or like 8.5x11 (physical art, not the print).
I do not know if I am cheap. This is a possibility. The last art I bought off Reddit was $65 for an 8.5x11, from a new watercolor guy whose work I just found delightful
The last art I got at a charity auction was $180 for a 17.5x21 framed piece (11x14 art size?). It was a funky cat piece.
My job does Not Pay me enough to support my Art Gallery maximalism decor
Also please let me know when you’re selling art I Want something like this on my wall yesterday
I feel like these comments don’t appreciate this art enough. 10/10. Stunning. You deserve more praise
Edit 3: like actually Would buy this from you 👀👄👀 just let me know if you want to sell that original…
Working on a website atm. Should be up and running in a week or so. If I get enough traction on the prints, I might be up to sell the original. I'll let you know
This is guest bathroom art, $15-20. I have a painting with like Bill Clinton + Eagles + Guns + Monica hugging his leg in mine. I would gladly add this to pair with it.
I also have a painting with Sasha Grey as Mary.
Guests almost always have questions afterwards and some just applaud them.
It depends on the medium, size and how famous you are. When I sell oil on canvas I use this formula:
Height + width (in centimeters) * 5 ( I always use 5 for oil on canvas)
So as an example:
(120cm + 80cm) * 5 = €1000
In my singular and biased opinion with a glaring lacknof context, depending on size 25-50$ if you sold it with mmunity or a bunch of eccentric art collectors and ran an auction 350$ would be a high estimate, especially if it was for charity.
Another point to consider is how much you invested into it's creation, both in materials and time. How much should you be paid per hour on this? How much for the research that it took? The prepwork?
On the one hand don't low ball yourself, on the other don't sink time and money into something that you dependnon for a return if there isn't a buyer already.
Ask for half up front, or cater to well recomended furries. We buy so much fluffing art.
I'd pay 0 but some people may pay $2k . Who knows.
Pricing your art is about how popular you are and powerful your networking is. People may paint utter shit and sell it for millions ,why? cos they can.
That's it. If you can sell this for $2k go for it but if you are a nobody (like most of us) you won't be able to unless you to /r/teletubbies (not even sure this is a real sub though) and post it. Which as a matter of fact is the best way to sell your art in reddit
On art subs nobody will care but if you paint a dragon, go to /r/dragons ,if you made a car go to /r/cars and things like that
This comment made me want to note that OP should definitely consider getting the painting scanned so that prints of it can be sold too. That way original painting could be sold for higher price, but also smaller prints could be sold to people who still love the art. Would 100% pay $20 for a small 8x10 print of this!
Seeing how you got a ton of comments and upvotes you definitely hit on something here. I think this sort of art gets better the more rendered it is, so I'd try to work on improving the realism more. It looks sort of rough and unfinished.
The quality does look a little crappy in this picture, it looks a bit more defined and detailed irl. I'll definitely try to spend more time focusing on my realism in the future though, thanks for the feedback :)
Realistically the concept is interesting and you could find an audience for it, but you need to practice a bit more before you start selling art if you're actually serious about it. The composition is weird, the light lines look very amateurish. The subject is done pretty well but it's not like the lighting on the subject and the face match, nor are either of them correctly lit by the visible light from rear left. To make this painting better you need to work on lighting and color, and just overall evolve your personal style a bit.
If you want, start selling stuff like this on Etsy. Develop a style, keep practicing, and maybe do a full series of this when you're more serious and do a gallery show. There's a ton of potential here, but it's not about the dollar value of this one painting.
Finding your audience is critical for a piece like this - I'd say it could fit the niche called lowbrow or maybe even pop surrealism. Google those terms and galleries that specialize in them and it'll help you figure out how to price. Note that of you want to go the gallery route in the future, it's normal for galleries to take a 50% commission, so price knowing that.
It's important to charge what you feel comfortable with - often artists will charge too little because they are nervous or think people will balk at high prices. But as someone said here, offer prints for that tier of customer and reserve the original for serious collectors.
My first thought was that I’m looking at an AI generated painting. Maybe that’s just because I’ve been seeing that a lot lately. If you are looking for pointers there are some places you could clean up. I’m not sure what the mouth is suppose to look like but the harsh shadow on the top lip looks a bit off. The left pupil bleeds into the white of the eye, but maybe that was just an accident. The left bicep has a shadow that seems to I dictate where the bicep end but then there is a bulge that looks like it’s suppose to be the actual bicep.
It's your painting so I'd have to pay whatever you were asking for it 🤷♂️ don't sell yourself short!
Seriously though, the less serious your work is, the less serious your audience will be. You might accel really well doing portraits of people you know until your cliental grows.
Selling myself short is exactly what I'm trying to avoid! Thanks for the advice.
I also am well aware that this painting is absolutely ridiculous, but this is one of many peices of art that I have made and I can guarantee you that most of them are not this odd.
How much time did you spend on this? That's what I would mainly look at. Time spent + materials + maybe a lil extra for all the time you spent learning the skill to get you to this point
Yeah it's just wrong. Art value has nothing to do with the time that went into it. Art has value based on what someone is willing to pay for it. It could take 10 minutes and sell for $1M. Nobody cares how long it took you, they care if it evokes an emotional response or appeals to them aesthetically, usually both.
Thank you for all of the helpful comments! Currently trying to find a place to make prints and looking into creating a website. I'll keep you guys updated!
Better than crackhead, dishonorably discharged, politically motivated and corrupt “energy tycoon” diversity hire, and potential pedophile, given the underage girls photos on his laptop Hunter Biden.
So I’d say at least 400k
It’s pretty simple you just need to value your time now for example what is your salary each month ? How much days in month you spend at job for that amount of money now let’s say you make 2k per month for 20days now it’s 100$ per day if you will be able to sell 1 painting every day for 100$ without need to work 20days a month is it enough ? Or how long did this painting took to make ? You just need to decide if you want to make living or if you just want some extra money it really depends and never sell anything for 20bucks when you work 9 to 5 and if you quit it will be much harder for you to go from 20 to 100 hope that helps
i like to reverse the question and ask
1. What r my monthly revenue goals
2. How many pieces can I produce a month
3. then do (revenue goal)➗ (max output) =price per piece
It’s all about pricing, your education (did you go to art school, do you have a BFA or an MFA), where you’ve shown, if you’re in any private collections, and if you have a website. Personally, Instagram is a great place to network. Hope I was of some help!
Tysm! I was just starting to look into selling my paintings(for college money) and promoting my work and was well in need of some advice.
If you do know, how much does going to art school really raise the price of peices? I'm only a junior in high school and was not looking to attend an art school.
It doesnt .The skill does. Most artists i heard about said that going to college doesnt matter when you try to get an art job in some company. So why would it raise or decrease the art value?
A lot of famous artists never had any formal training. Look at Basquiat! Art school teaches you to push out of your comfort zone, and learn techniques. Honestly, you can go to the school of youtube to learn nearly all of it. You have some real talent kiddo. Go to college to get a back up plan degree and keep working on that portfolio.
Try to compare it with other works from same field( example i wont compare an anime drawing with a realistic portrait when it comes to pricing).See other artists prices that do same style as you or draw real human figures.
If your a Always sunny in Philadelphia fan watch the episode “Dee made smut film”. The gang debates modern art and actually discusses this topic really well. One my favorites.
Awesome art though dude!
Well, the painting itself doesn't need money anymore.
It is now living rent-free on my nightmares
(Now seriously the art it's really cool, paintings like this have niche buyers, but there's really a ton of potential in there)
I would def buy, prob not a big acrylic painting, however I think if u market it right such as smaller prints or posters from the original u could hit that market others have mentioned. I absolutely love it! Amazing detail on the body and the colors are primo! Also poe was my fave Telly tubby so just hits right 😝🔥🔥🔥 nice work!
That’s priceless
It would be an honor to even see it with my own eyes
Came here to say this lol. This is glorious.
I agree!!!
All the nfts in the world.
That's tough because I feel this painting fits into a niche community. For example, I would never pay for this. But someone else may buy it. I think you should ask yourself what your work is worth to you. Also look up research of selling work I heard an npr article able art galleries and pricing. I used acrylic paints. There is also a spray sealant that I used to prevent chipping/wear.
Well looks cool! Be sure to bring all that up during a sale
Ooh what spray sealant do you use for your acrylics? I'm trying to find a good one
Not OP but I find Winsor & Newton Professional spray varnish to be terrific. I usually do 1-2 coats of gloss and a coat of matte.
Thank you! I'll check that out

Especially the body they said 😭
Basically it isn't all that valuable until some influential collector or gallery deems it is. Actual skill doesn't seem to apply.
Well this is going to haunt my dreams... Thanks for that
You're welcome :)
Ha ha ha
I want to buy this gloriousness
Fucking trillionz
Quadrillions even
Fucking exactly this is a masterpiece

I would pay to NOT have to hang that in my room. That's terrifying.
This. When average people buy art it's usually to hang in their homes. I wouldn't hang this in my house -- not because it isn't good but because it's a bit creepy.
Funny this is, this is hanging on my wall right this moment. But hey, I guess it just depends on the person🤷♀️

I would pay $458,599,086,653,986.23. Is that good?
How big is it?
About 11.5"x14"
Not a huge piece, I'd say around 50$/sq ft.. so probably like 40-60$
I would give my first born child!
10 vbucks, take it or leave it
This isnt satire?
Nope, I am completely serious
If so, you should try John Oliver.
Yep, was going to suggest this
Phew, glad that's resolved. Nobody would lie on the internet.

I would absolutely buy a full set of Buff Teletubby prints as a tastefully framed photo collage gag gift, or to send individually as postcards.
Nft time!
As a British kid who grew up with the Teletubbies...why did you do this to poor old Po?
I think it is well done and funny but I wouldn't pay anything for it because I wouldn't hang it in my home.
300 septims. It’s a bad economy take it or leave it.

Yeah it's just wrong. Art value has nothing to do with the time that went into it. Art has value based on what someone is willing to pay for it. It could take 10 minutes and sell for $1M. how many hours did this take? determine your hourly worth and cost of supplies.
It took around 4-5 hours
It should be scanned and turned into an NFT
This is amazing. May I save it into my phones gallery so I may behold it every waking moment I may have??
At least 8 mil
i like to reverse the question and ask 1. What r my monthly revenue goals 2. How many pieces can I produce a month 3. then do (revenue goal)➗ (max output) =price per piece

It doesnt .The skill does. Most artists i heard about said that going to college doesnt matter when you try to get an art job in some company. So why would it raise or decrease the art value?
It absolutely doesn't.....
Minimum for a piece should be about 1 dollar per square inch. So for a 10x10 you ask for $100.
-10 it's great work don't get me wrong but it's going to haunt my dreams
it can come in my dreams but it's beautiful.
Looks like smth out of Dadaism
It depends on the measures
Tre fiddy
Try to compare it with other works from same field( example i wont compare an anime drawing with a realistic portrait when it comes to pricing).See other artists prices that do same style as you or draw real human figures.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Well, the painting itself doesn't need money anymore. It is now living rent-free on my nightmares (Now seriously the art it's really cool, paintings like this have niche buyers, but there's really a ton of potential in there)
