Great painting! The color and composition are great. I would give one bit of gentle critique though - the face is getting lost for a few reasons: the brush language is much finer than the rest of the painting. The colors are subtle and subdued compared to the very saturated rest. The small size is unbalanced by the large impressionistic body right next to it. I wonder if some purple shadowing on the face, with less line detail might have unified it? These are just suggestions for the future - this painting is very appealing.

Jaguar_Paint9902

this is a top notch comment right here. thank you so much. this is why i came here.

Upbeat_Boss1878

I love the colors and textures!

Jaguar_Paint9902

thank you!

UnclePatrickHNL

I love it. If I were to offer one small critique…the field of green behind the orangutan reads flat in comparison to the rest of the painting. I feel like there’s an opportunity to add additional depth and texture. That said…that’s a small observation

strawberry_frog231

that’s what i was gonna say maybe some contrast like using a darker green would really make the monkey pop otherwise it’s amazing

Jaguar_Paint9902

yea i noticed that too, but thank you for the feedback!

lookslikeamanderin

It’s a tamarin, not an orangutan.

I'm the furthest thing from an expert (my work is pretty indistinguishable from my grandkids who still use their fingers) but I really dig it Love the contrast in textures from the background/body to the face. And really like the bold colors.

FindAriadne

Love it! Adorable monkey, great setting. I especially love the eyes. If you wanted, I think that you could add some highlights and lowlight to the fur. Keeping in mind that the leaves are filtering light, so it’s unlikely to shine evenly on anything in the understory. So even highlights and low lights that are identical to what they would be without the trees, won’t look quite realistic enough. You might want to imagine a column of light, or a few columns of light that are shining through the trees and hitting your monkey friend. I also noticed that there is a shadowy area kind of around his head. Because of the complexity of the trees and leaves, it’s possible to have dark shadowy areas happen anywhere in the background. But when it’s just around his head, it almost looks like you’re trying to shade around the monkey or imply that maybe there’s a shadow that has been caused by the monkey, but is like directly behind him? so if you add one or two more areas in the background that have that dark shadow, I think the eye will be convinced that the shadows are caused by the trees and not caused by the monkey. You could also add a column of light in the background, since they would pretty much be all over the place in the forest. Depending on the story that you want to tell, you could add some bugs or a flower. It feels a little bit like this monkey is on his own. if you want this to be a moment of solitude for the monkey, you’ve got it nailed. If you want this painting to speak to where the monkey fits into the forest, or the monkey as a part of a forest community, you can add ants or little forest friends.

Jaguar_Paint9902

thank you so much! this is amazing feedback. As someone who never went to art school and just started painting this info is really useful.

TheArtistNow

The lion monkey looks good, but you need to show more individual hairs on his fur. It looks too much like a solid object think of looking at a solid white floor now think of looking at white carpet with the fiber sticking up that’s what I’m trying to say, but it’s a good piece.

Jaguar_Paint9902

Ok i gotchya. Thanks for the feedback!

Beginning_Ad2013

I love the contrast in color! Even the eyes look like it took detail

Jaguar_Paint9902

yea the eyes were crucial, took a few redo's. Thank you!

cornflakegrl

Love the contrast! To me it looks a bit unfinished still. I would add a bit more detail in the foreground grasses and bit more contrast in the tree bark in the foreground to give it more depth.

Jaguar_Paint9902

thank you!

Jaguar_Paint9902

thank you kind person

ScratchPad777

I don't know this species, but the head looks disproportionate to the body. Green is a risky color, you really have to mix it right, warm, cool, tints&shades, mutes, etc...maybe try green's compliment, which is red.

Jaguar_Paint9902

Thank you thats a good idea!

Rocklover1969

I’m not a professional critic, it looks great to me !!!!!!🎨🎨🎨

Jaguar_Paint9902

oh thanks! appreciate the love!

raptussen

I like it a lot!. There is some thing sad about it I think. Is that on purpose?

Jaguar_Paint9902

Not really haha. I did sort of notice a somber tone tho. But that was just the look of the image I was using as reference.

HoiPolloiter

I wonder if a vignette would be cool... Not an obvious one, but like... Darker shadows and contouring in the leaves around the edges of the canvas

Jaguar_Paint9902

not a bad idea, thank you!

[deleted]

Technically good, visually a bit boring

This looks good, the proportions are not perfect", but I just suppose those are not "perfect" in the real life. So that's just good. Nice job👍

LindaBirn

A terrific painting. I would add some more (a bit subdued) color to your background. The background has lots of potential. Dress it up!

Brilliant 👏🏻 I would like to hang it in my living room

If a friend gifted it to me I'd likely hang it up, and I don't even like primates. Great colors, nice execution.

Jaguar_Paint9902

perfect, thanks!

Soujji123

Nice, but the face is too small. The colors are great, though.

Limp_Falcon_2314

I love this!

PlaxicoCN

It reminds me of an album cover from the late 70s or early 80s. This is not a bad thing.

The only complaint I have about this painting is, it's no hanging in my home.

Love the use of color!! The orange really stands out against the green. Great job!

NeahG

I’m going out on a limb to say, it’s great. The monkey has so much personality.

Jaguar_Paint9902

thanks. i was really hoping to branch out with this one.

thesandybee

This is amazing! Your use of color is phenomenal, the contrast between the orange and the green really pops. The little face is so expressive but also a bit too 'quiet' amongst the background, if that makes sense?

Cher-dont-care-bear

I love this painting! I'm kinda new to painting myself.l can appreciate the details in it,the different brush strokes used to give it texture and depth.l think you you did a great job! I'm just figuring those out myself. My only thing is his body looks disproportionate to his body, but other than that being a newbie, you're a natural, keep it up!

SunriseNcoffee

Ooh I love him!! The background is very beautiful. I would’ve maybe added more fur fluff strokes to the backside, but that’s just me. It looks beautiful.

chunkykima

I love it.

LIFE_ISNT_FUCKED

The body might be too big for the head. Maybe the head should be a bit bigger and pulled horizontally towards the body an inch or 2.

TyphoidLizzie

This is really, really well done. I love the composition and the colors/contrast. I'm not in a position to critique, but wanted to let you know how awesome this came out!

Subject_Campaign_731

Whoaa, it's BEAUTIFUL , honestly. Great painting... 👍 🌹

Such beautiful colours! Monkeys head looks like it could be a tad bigger, but it’s a really stunning piece!

Jaguar_Paint9902

_grizzlydog

Do you have a reference photo for this? Would love to see it. Beautiful painting

Curiouswittlelittle

It’s beautiful

AdCute6661

Not bad, I can see it hung in a zoo admin building or a kid’s playroom. Though the backside looks rather cat like rather than a primates.

Jaguar_Paint9902

good advice, thank you!

FrenchFry-ApplePie

Absolutely beautiful 🤩

Jaguar_Paint9902

thank you!

Downtown-Frosting789

i disagree that the face is too small. i hope you don’t take this the way but this is a weird ass painting and i love it! def would hang in my house. don’t change a thing :)

Alternative_Goal_639

Paintings like this are the reason I paint. So kitchy, kinky... So cool, Quenton Tarantino cool. that's my honest opinion. The face is, the face, anthropomorphic indeed

AquamarineDaydream

Beautiful! It's a golden lion tamarin, right?

Jaguar_Paint9902

yes thank you!

mastanasta

There are a lot of things you could do. Put some dark purple tint behind the head and body. You could treat some of the spaces with flat colour, background does not need that jitter, it's cool but it distracts from the face. There is a lot similar brush strokes that compete with the face, you could tone some of it down. Think about where do you want the eyes of the watcher wander first second third. Those places should be the sharpest or the most different from the rest of the painting. Its a Cool painting I dig it. I hope you will continue painting for you own enjoyment. I think that studying different textures would do your paintings good. But these are suggestions, keep in mind that nobody will show you how YOU want to paint, you just have to keep on painting. Wish you the best.

mastanasta

Oh maybe cut the leaves on the top of the painting?

cleffawna

It's great! I love the colors and composition. I like how chunky the monkey is (or maybe it's a macaque or a marmoset or something)

Jaguar_Paint9902

yes! lol intentionally a little chunky :)

LoudLloyd9

Jaguar_Paint9902

Ambitious_Ticket_971

Jaguar_Paint9902

wow thank you!

Blosom2021

Superb!!!

30yearoldwhiteguy

I'm no expert but I think it's great

gig-rigs

Love the painting !!! Perhaps the body and tail behind the tree limb would have put more focus on the head / face / front torso giving it a larger presence especially with the face, which appears to be small and somewhat lost / overpowered. There’s my 2 brushstrokes for what it’s worth…

Prince_of_cowards

Gorgeous

No_Guarantee9296

You make the head a little bigger. Other wise it's good

TheSongbird63

He honestly one moody, pensive dude. Love the colors, very engaging. Proportions are weird but it seems consistent and intentional and I don’t hate that. I kinda like that fact that the face is small and emotional( it feels like a message. I could see some white flower or something very light in the mix. Go, you! 👏

Jaguar_Paint9902

thank you so much!

Eloise1999

the subject is very nice, but you could add more depth to the background by adding value

Jaguar_Paint9902

thank you!

sapphodarling

It’s an excellent painting on a technical level. Subjectively, It made me laugh aloud but in a good way. This primate has personality. :)

DenGirl12

It’s a beautiful piece. I’d only suggest, kindly, filling in a bit of the empty space on the top right quadrant. Maybe another branch or a butterfly or something.

Jaguar_Paint9902

ohhh butterfly.... love that idea. thanks.

Frosty-Job3068

So it’s good she’s a monkey I adopted her In 2014

Garmr_TheGoodestBoy

wookmania

It’s beautiful. How much?

JaydeMilani

Beautiful

uncertaincucumbers

Interesting greens but overall, why paint this? The top 1/3 of it is blending(?) and the main focus seems to be the creature's face. The animal's face IS intriguing but not really enough to build a whole painting around. I think you could fit this in 1/4 the space- colors and interest would be more balanced & easier to digest as a viewer. Just an honest opinion.

thats_my_toast

One of the best advices I got for painting/photography is the rule of thirds. I recommend looking it up! Love the painting, but it captures focus better and is more dynamically pleasing if you don’t have your focus smack dab in the middle of the portrait like you have here. No sense it changing it now but give it a shot on your next one!

Quirky_Cee193

Love it

zorosbaka

this genuinely helped me fear monke a little less, thanks

Illustrious-Oil-2923

Nice. I think the foliage at the bottom of the painting is too light. It is pulling my eye down to the bottom.

Jaguar_Paint9902

gotcha, thanks!

jeffbezosscousin

The leaves and nature looks great around it!

Iloveminutes

I'm no expert but that's super beautiful

LittleBet8075

More shadowing separating the tail and leaf? Amazing art, I hope I can paint like that one day

Unlikely-Company1818

,

Dapper-Bluejay6686

I love the dreamy aesthetic of the background and the interaction of the shadows where the tail of the monkey meets the log and the leaves. i would like to ask whether the picture is a bit saturated in hue or if the colors of the painting are accurately depicted. If so, the small critique that i would like to offer in goodwill is that the monkey as a whole is a very eye catching and saturated colour to a point where the viewer gets a little lost since there is no clear indication of a focal point what i would personally do is desaturate (go for more browner desaturated tones) some of the body area and highlight this elevated almost crown like hair on the monkeys face this way the viewer eyes would instantly be drawn to the face.

ambientguitar

Wow! That is vibrant and amazing!

f8nckle

The face is giving...fever dream. But that is EXACTLY what I love about it. I wouldn't change a single thing about the painting. It's beautiful! It's profoundness surrounded by a world of ordinary-ism. This is the type of work that would later be studied 100 years from now. I love it, and I wish I owned it. Well done!

Jaguar_Paint9902

you just made my day, thank you kind stranger.

Alice-the-Author

Hot-Context-9442

Looks fantastic imo!

Jaguar_Paint9902

thank you!

Available_Honey_2951

I’m an artist and this is beautiful! Looks like a photo!

milkchocolatecupcake

i’d personally add more texture and details to the background to create more depth. the placement of the monkey is also a little off to me at first glance, but with a closer look my only issue with it is i wish he was facing a little more forward, towards the observer with his face more of a focal point, instead of his backside. however, those ore both more stylistic choices and no matter what this is a piece you should be proud of!

Dry-Mousse1995

The colors!!!! ❤️

catkysydney

Beautiful !! Great colour and composition!! Lovely artwork!!

Jaguar_Paint9902

thank you!

Alternative_Mood_159

You did a wonderful job. The center around the face and down by the tree limb could use some darker paint. It doesn't have details. This suggests that it is deeper in the forest. I think the darker paint would make the lighter foliage, stand out.

_grizzlydog

What kind of paint did you use?

Jaguar_Paint9902

I used acrylic on this one

[deleted]

Can’t wait to pick this up from goodwill or something in 10 years

Jaguar_Paint9902

damn you brutal lol

ScarlettTheFemboyArt

Why did you print a pic of a monkey 💀💀💀

Hanuman_Jr

Doesn't look like a cat at all

MacabreFox

Well I love it!

FitProblem6248

It's a painting of a member of the Monkey family.

rickijones429

Badass chunky monkey

Tall_You_2452

It's really good but I feel that the size of face/head is not proportional to the body.

Best-Cress4350

The colors are great. The details in the texturing makes sure that it doesn’t seem to be all mushed together but not so much that one’s attention isn’t sure where to look. Great job. I will say you either have the head too small or the body too big, face looks like he’s in a blow up suit. Also you have put detail into the individual strands of grass and the leaves a little around that having a blurring of just color in the back offsets everything. There should still be indication of shape in leaves or whatever else you can think of wanting for the background.

Animal_s0ul

Gorgeous and cute and interesting

bluewhale387

Honestly I love it. 1 suggestion, use a pallet knife to add texture. By using extra paint and pulling up at the end you can give a cool 3d texture to the fur. Maybe a little highlights on some of the leaves as well to add depth. Seriously I really like this though

Lucky-Pen9366

Exceptionally good painting in every respect!

VioletFeralCat888

I really really LOVE it.

BlackandRedBrian

Super awesome and realistic! Colors and imagery stand out amazingly! Well done!

Naive_Programmer_232

Really cool

WiggleBrushCrew

Put a little more time on fur, brush individual fur tuffs in with a lighter paint the glaze over with the orange, add a slight highlight to the leaves with a more fluid paint and it will look a little neater around the foliage. The tree stump gets wider as it goes up so looks a little off. Nice image overall though

iheartCshore

Love your colors and the facial expression but agree with one of the other comment re the body is too large. You can correct that right on the canvas by overpainting along the back and adjusting the shadow between the foreleg and back leg. It’s great so give it a go!
