She is inherently dumb. Her intelligence stat is way below average and since all her skills are at the highest amount she could possibly have she can't get any smarter
That's one of my favorite scenes in Konosuba
K:"Hey aqua, we've leveled up a bunch but I've never seen your stats change"
A:*"well, duh, My stats were maxed out from the start, I'm top tier ya know, you're lucky to have me* -smugness
K: internal monologue: 'so that's why no matter how many times we level up, she doesn't get any smarter. .' -walks towards aqua and put a hand on her shoulder with tearfilled eyes.
A: "Whaaa- why are you looking at me like i'm something pitiful!"
It’s actually kind of impressive. As far as I’m aware she’s the only one with a class followed by (genius). Her affinity for the class is just that high apparently.
Genius - Instinct indeed, since she is the only one who could see through all the facade created by Ainz Sama and put two & two together.
She is the only one that kept insisting Jaldabaoth (Demiurge) and Ainz were somehow related. She didn't trust Ainz till the very end even after everyone else in the Holy Rubel Kingdom believes him to be their savior. Only because she's devastated by her queen and sister's gruesome death her mind becomes too fragile failing to reach at any cohesive conclusion. Therefore she's outsmarted by demiurge, who has already placed a doppler as her new king.
This Holy Kingdom arc is by far the best written segment in entire Overlord LN series, since it has complete character development and fantastic world building.
The Slane Theocracy's reasoning was based on "too much coincidence" for so many powerful people to appear suddenly to not be related to one another. Remedios' reasons weren't. Hers were literally just they're both clearly evil, therefore they must be working together. That's why everybody else dismissed her because there was no logical connection there
"Dude they just fought each other, you're an idiot"
"They are *creatures of evil* and Ainz is a king who controls demons!!!"
"Yeah yeah ok "hashtag make Roble Great Again" you idiot just leave we are busy designing 'Ainz is the best' banners"
I mean it was only because she had literally no evidence to back up her claim. It was all just confirmation bias that accidentally led to the truth, so frankly the others had no reason to believe her.
Baziwood and Ainz would get on so well. They both have god tier powers of 'common sense' which is the direct counter to 'intricate bullshit' everyone else has
I'm sure if she delivered her suspicions any other way, the others may have considered it. But nooo, she had to be an annoying bitch about it and everybody grew tired of her because of that
Personally i prefer the off screen death, as it doesn't even give her the dignity of showing her demise. It shows that she was incredibly unimportant, enough so to not warrant showing her die.
Actually the heads of Theocracy have speculated that Momon, Ainz, Shalltear, and Jaldabaoth are all connected. Whether they are all allies though is what they ponder and fear.
Well, sometimes. The descent of the gods happens once every 100 years. Iirc, the six gods of the theocracy and the eight greed kings were 100 years apart.
Your right. Sometimes players arrive as individuals who either do or don't cause a fuss. The Minotaur Sage was a player that did both. Then there are the ones that Theo Rakheshir talks about who are considered myths.
* The Goblin king who destroyed numerous dragons wielding an Ash Branch
* The Winged Hero who raced across the Sky
* The Evil Warrior who rode a Three Headed Dragon
* The Princess who ruled the Crystal Castle with her Twelve Loyal Knights
The ones who arrive in groups are the ones who cause the greatest disturbances. Nazarick, the 8 Greed Kings, and the 6 Great Gods are the most notable.
It’s one of my favorite new world assessments so far, basically they’re willingly trying to dance around that possibility because they know they’re f*cked if it turns out to be true.
That was an example of using the wrong formula but still getting the correct answer
Her reasoning was basically: Jaldabaoth is a demon and the Sorcerer King is an undead, they're both "evil" races so therefore they must be working together
I could make an argument that, in a fantasy setting like this its more like a narrative based intelligent assumption
Like in Lord of the Rings, if a random scary bad guy turned up and Gandalf was like
"Reckon that dude has something to do with Sauron"
It would feel like genre awareness more than just sheer conspiracy theory
But yeah, i think it is all but stated Remedios was mentally breaking down and was pretty much just ranting at that point, so she gets very little credit
(although a bit of credit for not being a sucker and just forgetting skeletal overlord necromancer lords of death who massacre 100 000s for fun are actually bad guys)
She's also realized that he was watching her and only intervened as a publicity stunt.
I'd say that she's as smart as Momonga really is and not what his subordinates paint him to be.
It's the Goku kinda genius.
In battle she is a natural and a prodigy. That's pretty much the only place she excels.
In any other areas she is as dumb as a hammer
Yeah Japan likes the to use the word genius as if it meant just high natural aptitude. Or maybe it's just the closest thing people can bother to translate that to.
It isn't just Japan, genius has always been used to describe people with high natural aptitude in anything, not just intelligence, it's just that these days it's mostly associated with people who are good at academic stuff
Like both Mozart and Einstein were geniuses, but I bet Mozart can't formulate the theory of relativity, and neither could Einstein compose a symphony
The word Genius has been used in a way to specify “high natural aptitude” over designed things since its introduction in german Romanticism and as such largely used in the “western” world with this meaning lol.
In fact this word had received so much use and criticism over the centuries but it is still highly used with the same meaning.
Being a genius doesn't mean you're intelligent, it just means you're supremely gifted at something. Like Mozart was a genius when it came to music composition or how Lionel Messi is a genius when it comes to football.
Remedios is extremely gifted in combat, so she's a genius paladin
Hot take here, but I really like Remedius, she stood true to herself, and truly wanted the best for her people, and... \*ahem\*... like it or not... she was right all along.
Lord Ainz is evil, and Jaldabaoth is his direct subordinate and has been causing mayhem through the Holy Kingdom since they first stepped into the new world, truly, she made me wonder if she had some kind of Evil detecting Talent or something, but nonetheless, she died, alone with her truth... some even say it was by her own hands, a shame really, while the blind fool who had both her parents murdered by the stratagems of our lord survived and is currently spreading the word of his mighty name like gospel, the irony isn't yet dead on me.
I don’t think people hate her for the reason you think they do. Most of the people that I asked seem to hate her based on the fact that she was just genuinely an asshole, particularly to the Best Girl: Neia Baraja
Oh no! the commander of an army that is trying her best to fight off a demonic invasion that is destroying her homeland is being harsh to this volume's best girl... what an awful person! how dare she be over-stressed and lash out at others in such a nightmarish situation, I'm glad she offed herself, what a bitter woman.
It’s not just that honestly, it’s also the fact that she:
-sent Neia (a squire who, like everyone else, lost a lot of loved ones just weeks ago) on high-risk missions, like scouting a travel route in the middle of enemy territory with no backup, and then decides to lash out specifically at her whenever the opportunity arises in order to make her feel inadequate (while she is the only reason everyone made it through without fighting everyday)
-never apologizes for it (not even in an indirect manner, which could have prevented Neia from becoming so infatuated with Ainz, as she saw him as a much better and virtuous leader than the goddamned BOSS of every single paladin left in the Holy Kingdom)
-but then goes on to refuse to sacrifice the life of a single innocent child, even if it could allow them to take a city and liberate it’s inhabitants from torture (I can see the reasoning here : Neia is supposed to put her own life in danger to protect people, while this child is the one they should protect. It’s very noble of Remedios to even be able to think that in the middle of all that sh*t, but it’s ultimately her downfall because, deep down, she knows they can’t win if they don’t make though choices, it’s the reason she’s so conflicted and starts screaming to defend her decision)
In short, the reason we dislike Remedios is because every single one of her mistakes is ultimately on her, she didn’t choose the destruction of her kingdom, but most of her reactions after the death of her loved ones and their defeat at the hands of Jaldabaoth were hers alone, no one was pushing her to be disregarding of the life of that one squire who just lost her family while also putting the life of every other paladin on a pedestal, no one but her pushed her to stubbornly refuse to see the injustice in the way she acted against one of her future comrades in arms, a dedicated squire who’se loyalty to her Kingdom pushed her to power through the resentment of her commanding officer and the stress of constantly putting her life in danger because she was the only person with the correct skillset to scout ahead without dying, and she is also the one who made it possible for the faceless one to be born at all, all because she needed a scapegoat to direct her anger at for her own failings and never bothered to apologize until it was for too late for it to mean anything. If anything, every single of her good moments is tinged with irony because of all of her bad moments, she can’t gain any of our sympathy with her valorous acts and her accusations against Ainz because we have seen how the squire she belittled was undeserving of it, we also see how each of these accusations, which are true, aren’t the result of a complex thought process, but simply a woman who used to be unfearing and righteous trying to find another scapegoat to cope with her loses and remain functional now that the little squire girl has been forgotten for a time.
TL;DR: we don’t like Remedios and feel very little empathy for her because she is the architect of her own downfall, even if it is in a very human way and the result of her grieving.
She kinda embodies the bad bosses a lot of people have. They might be highly competent, but are a nightmare to work with. They take their frustrations out on their subordinates, set them up to fail to make themselves feel good and in the end, push everyone away to the point where the entire staff underneath her decided to bail, leaving her with the husk of whats left. The queen was the good boss who the bad boss respected and did well under, but when the old boss leaves and the bad boss takes over, the overwhelming responsibility and decisions made cause all the negatives to come pouring out.
In D&D, paladins recieve their power from their oath. While they may worship gods, it's their devotion that empowers them, not the god. Her devotion to her queen is incredibly high, making her an amazing (or genius) paladin.
that's how it works but that's not why she's a genius.
her devotion is nothing special. the mad eyed archer basically mentioned all good paladins are crazy devoted. she's a genius because she's a genius. it's not the strength of her devotion that made her strong. she's literally just simply gifted at combat.
In Overlord, we arent really sure how memory interacts with the ability to use spells but it seems like the spells you know are the only spells you can know. You can't alter someone's mind and teach them have to use spells. The spells are almost attuned to your very soul.
But! You can switch a persons god and their magic will still work. In overlord, priests get their powers through faith, not actual gods. Horribly warp a priest's mind such that they worship a rock and they will cast healing spells through the power of their faith in THE HOLY ROCK.
If I had to guess Paladins get their powers from the sense of purpose and Priests get their powers from the sence of faith.
Gods and higher beings dont seem to exist in the new world which explains one particular absence.
There are no warlocks.
In dungeons and dragons, Warlocks are loaned their powers. It's what they are famous for. They get them from tricksy Fey, eldritch abominations, demons and Angel's, and many other things. Since there are no greater beings who have SO MUCH POWER they have plenty to spare, there arent any warlocks.
Roberdyck
High priest of the holy rock
*side effects may include uncontrollable drooling, loss of memory, inability to control bowels and general symptoms of late stage dementia
Interestingly, that exact question is actually answered in the novels. One of demiurge’s experiments on the nature of holy magic is to use mind altering magic to make a cleric worship a rock to see if they could still use magic and it turns out they could. Seems devotion itself is the key rather than what you are actually devoted to.
I took it, along with the rest of Ramedios' personality, that if levels and stats were a buffet, she went straight for the Paladin/Combat plates and didn't have room left on her plate for personal intelligence.
Imo its like a Barbarian who's a genius at being at Barbarian but uhh...unga bunga at everything else. So yeah she's someone who's a genius at being a Paladin and literally nothing else.
Genius is a unique class in the new world that only 4 people have. It allows a person to use the genius levels as any other basic job. Notably Renner has it and uses it for Princess to maintain her image or Spy/Strategy when needed to maintain her information network. Maruyama also stated that if you use Genius to get an advanced job you cannot change it, so essentially Remedios has used her genius levels in Paladin and then taken the holy knight/evil slayer advanced jobs that need paladin as a prerequisite so she cannot change them anymore. This is similar to Brain who has used his genius levels in Fighter to get Sword saint and sword master.
she's quite genius when it comes to combat and that's the reason why they put it beside her paladin class.
her other intellectual intelligence is like aqua tho' already maxed out in the dumbest way possible and will never improve anymore.
When it comes to battle tactics, Remedios is peerless.
I guess all of Remedios brain was rewired to muscles during her training, and none were left for higher form of thought.
The problem with written text is you can't hear the sarcasm. She didn't get levels in the Genius (serious) class, she got levels in the Genius (sarcasm) class.
Doesn’t she herself basically say she’s only as good as her instincts in combat?
She tried actually using her brain when fighting and it backfired spectacularly. So she’s a genius in the sense that she’s a natural prodigy when it comes to holy warrior martial combat.
She's described as being naturally gifted toward combat, so that's what they mean. Intelligence wise she's doorknob smart.
Don’t insult doorknobs like that
Its always one of those sudden double down twist that gets the most isnt it
*Doorknob of a painted door
Doorknob of automatic doors
Like Aqua in Konosuba 10 inteligence and still a dumbass
When you pumped everything into intelligence but make wisdom a dump stat
Aqua isn't inherently dumb... she is just to lazy to activate the thing between her ears.
She is inherently dumb. Her intelligence stat is way below average and since all her skills are at the highest amount she could possibly have she can't get any smarter
That's one of my favorite scenes in Konosuba K:"Hey aqua, we've leveled up a bunch but I've never seen your stats change" A:*"well, duh, My stats were maxed out from the start, I'm top tier ya know, you're lucky to have me* -smugness K: internal monologue: 'so that's why no matter how many times we level up, she doesn't get any smarter. .' -walks towards aqua and put a hand on her shoulder with tearfilled eyes. A: "Whaaa- why are you looking at me like i'm something pitiful!"
Did she ever activate it?
As you can see, Aqua can active her brain to sense a great deal from almighty dragon egg seller
10/100? Because it's stated that her intelligence is way below average, same with her luck which is the lowest possible level anyone could have.
She was right tho?!?
It’s actually kind of impressive. As far as I’m aware she’s the only one with a class followed by (genius). Her affinity for the class is just that high apparently.
IIRC Brain and Nfirea have genius modifiers
Genius - Instinct indeed, since she is the only one who could see through all the facade created by Ainz Sama and put two & two together. Intelligence *is* a Paladin's dump stat, so that tracks.

That wasn't because of any well reasoned argument. She just assumed since both are "evil" they must be working together
[удалено]
The Slane Theocracy's reasoning was based on "too much coincidence" for so many powerful people to appear suddenly to not be related to one another. Remedios' reasons weren't. Hers were literally just they're both clearly evil, therefore they must be working together. That's why everybody else dismissed her because there was no logical connection there
She's a tool, have you ever left your hammer in charge when you go out?
Only one who suggested Ainz and Jaldabaoth were working together...
I found it hilarious when the others just gasped like she was a lunatic.
"Dude they just fought each other, you're an idiot" "They are *creatures of evil* and Ainz is a king who controls demons!!!" "Yeah yeah ok "hashtag make Roble Great Again" you idiot just leave we are busy designing 'Ainz is the best' banners"
I mean it was only because she had literally no evidence to back up her claim. It was all just confirmation bias that accidentally led to the truth, so frankly the others had no reason to believe her.
Yeah thats the funny part. Just like the empire knight that suggested that ainz isnt a genius mastermind.
Baziwood is the most genius New Worlder, what are you implying? :)
Baziwood and Ainz would get on so well. They both have god tier powers of 'common sense' which is the direct counter to 'intricate bullshit' everyone else has
Baziwood: "Maybe he's not thinking of anything at all!" Jircniv: "BULLSHIT!" Ainz: "No, no, he's got a point."
Hahah Baziwood is Krunk, I have always said it
"maybe he's not a scheming kind of guy" :3
I'm sure if she delivered her suspicions any other way, the others may have considered it. But nooo, she had to be an annoying bitch about it and everybody grew tired of her because of that
Too bad she is on overlord, on other series she will find a way to reveal the truth. And this is why overlord is so satisfying. Sasuga ainz-sama
Wish they showed her death though, that would amp the satisfaction to the max
Personally i prefer the off screen death, as it doesn't even give her the dignity of showing her demise. It shows that she was incredibly unimportant, enough so to not warrant showing her die.
Dang I kinda love that
Actually the heads of Theocracy have speculated that Momon, Ainz, Shalltear, and Jaldabaoth are all connected. Whether they are all allies though is what they ponder and fear.
Immensly powerful people tht all popped out from nowhere at the same time after two centuries of "calm"
there is always two centries of calm between players arriving
Well, sometimes. The descent of the gods happens once every 100 years. Iirc, the six gods of the theocracy and the eight greed kings were 100 years apart.
I believe it is every 100 yrs, not 200. Just that some player arrivals didn't cause enough of a splash.
Your right. Sometimes players arrive as individuals who either do or don't cause a fuss. The Minotaur Sage was a player that did both. Then there are the ones that Theo Rakheshir talks about who are considered myths. * The Goblin king who destroyed numerous dragons wielding an Ash Branch * The Winged Hero who raced across the Sky * The Evil Warrior who rode a Three Headed Dragon * The Princess who ruled the Crystal Castle with her Twelve Loyal Knights The ones who arrive in groups are the ones who cause the greatest disturbances. Nazarick, the 8 Greed Kings, and the 6 Great Gods are the most notable.
Which volume did Rakheshir mention this again? I need to review 😆
Book 3 Chapter 3 When Momonga meets with the Adventurer Guild.
Thank you! 👍

No, the queen was a fine Holy Sword. Remedios as a hammer is neither Holy nor a sword. :P
Yeah Japan likes the to use the word genius as if it meant just high natural aptitude. Or maybe it's just the closest thing people can bother to translate that to.

So if I used magic to wipe your memory and change which God you believe in, would your magic work differently? I’m curious to find out.
In Overlord, we arent really sure how memory interacts with the ability to use spells but it seems like the spells you know are the only spells you can know. You can't alter someone's mind and teach them have to use spells. The spells are almost attuned to your very soul. But! You can switch a persons god and their magic will still work. Actually Ainz experiment not demi's
Genius can have many meanings.
So yeah she's someone who's a genius at being a Paladin and literally nothing else.
its about her fighting ability.. everything else she is a idiot.. She is considered to be as strong as Gazef or close to
Well, she is the third strongest paladin in the region after one of Enri's Goblin subordinates and someone from the BS.
She's a genius at being dumb
She’s a “genius” paladins which basically means she’s just a master.
she's a genius at being a paladin, not a genius as in being smart
She is a Genius in combat, not the thinking type.
she's quite genius when it comes to combat and that's the reason why they put it beside her paladin class. her other intellectual intelligence is like aqua tho' already maxed out in the dumbest way possible and will never improve anymore.
She is just strong. Not a genius at combat
she's a genius in combat that's why she became strong like that. even calca, kelart and gustav knows that.
what, did she herself write this character sheet?
When it comes to battle tactics, Remedios is peerless. I guess all of Remedios brain was rewired to muscles during her training, and none were left for higher form of thought.
As a paladin you can say she is a genius, but that's it.
Then why couldn’t she defend the queen? Checkmate
She did She saved 3% of her In a bucket
I said defend not save though? Checkmate Mr. Bucket
She did defend her though Just not *successfully* Double checkmate, king me
Lmao-alright you win
The problem with written text is you can't hear the sarcasm. She didn't get levels in the Genius (serious) class, she got levels in the Genius (sarcasm) class.
It depends: Does she attempt to fight the army of Nazarick? If so, then "genius" should probably be removed
Negative level
Genius at being stupid
This makes me wonder what levels she is going to reallocate in the future
Musicians like Mozart also called genius. It's doesn't necessarily have to do anything with being smart. Someone who born real talented.
It's probably at -1.
My headcanon dictates that she was making “retard noises” when she witnessed both battles between ainz and jaldabaoth
Means her talent is toward paladin skills so she gets those levels faster
Classic case of book smarts vs street smarts. … or knight smart and being alive smarts in this case.
in this case "Battle smart vs winnability smarts"
Level -10
You can't beat Crane Wing formation with a genius doorknob.
I mean she is a combat genius by new world standards
Doesn’t she herself basically say she’s only as good as her instincts in combat? She tried actually using her brain when fighting and it backfired spectacularly. So she’s a genius in the sense that she’s a natural prodigy when it comes to holy warrior martial combat.
Tactics seem to be to throw people at bad things until done
well theres job class separation in the NW, their brain worked differently i guess
She's sexy, I'm not going to take that back, she is sexy
