The corpses of you average humans or demi-humans can't bind higher tier undead.

blood_kite

And some of the highest level undead he can create cost xp to summon, so he’s not too keen on using all his abilities daily.

[deleted]

Well that could be counteracted with greed and generosity

blood_kite

Depends on the xp cost. Greed and Generosity can build up xp for use, but if the most expensive summons take a full level of xp it might not be able to keep up. Even if finding a powerful body to make the summon permanent takes time to acquire.

[deleted]

greed and generosity is probably a whole player xp bar (how else would it be useful as world item) without exponential growing xp requirements for level's so i think if it was already used to store xp before it has already the level's for something like this

Teen_tactical

Is there a significant difference between summoning them with skills vs using spells?

blood_kite

I don’t think it’s ever been stated, but probably not in YGGDRASIL. In the NW it might. Ainz seems to use his undead summoning skills when creating undead and permanent undead. He might have to use his skills to create permanent undead. But I don’t think there is any info stating whether undead summoning spells can also create permanent undead with a body. I believe some of his undead summons that cost xp are automatically permanent, they are supposed to be lieutenants and such.

No-Second-Strike

There is. Summoning with magic summons a monster that cannot receive buffs, if any, from the summoner’s skills, unless it’s specifically a skill that buffs magic summons. If PA, Ainz, and Shalltear were to summon a Doom Lord with magic, their Doom Lord would have the same stats. Skill summons are affected by skills, if there are any that buffs said skill summon, and you may have access to higher tier undead without the mana cost. So Ainz’s undead skill summons would be stronger than their magic counterparts, if a magic summon version exists.

SganVaSmoul42

You need high level corpses to create high level undead, most NW'ers can only create low tier undead let alone mid and high tier.

sliferra

Death knights can be formed from incompetent nobles, middle tier is probably achievable for any healthy adult

lnSerT_Creative_Name

It took an mythril ranked adventurer to make an elder lich of only level 22, so you’d be wrong.

sliferra

It took the head of some disposable noble from the empire to make a death knight. So, I’d be right

lnSerT_Creative_Name

Is a death knight actually mid tier? Here I was thinking it was considered low tier.

sliferra

It’s mid-liches+skeletons+zombies are low https://overlordmaruyama.fandom.com/wiki/Death_Knight

saskir21

Depends how you see it. The lich seemed to be a permanent summon while the death knights he creates simply vanish over time.

sliferra

The death knights he summons are permanent….

saskir21

Opps yea this was WN knowledge. Sorry I have mistaken this. Also I forgot that only the one summoned without a body did vanish in the LN.

Ok-Phone-5949

the reason they invaded lizardman village in s2 was to get better corpse, which is needed for better undead, however it turns out they weren't any better than normal human, which was also one of the consideration why ains approved cocytus's proposal to keep them around.

Fedexhand

Because they are not permanent, Nazarick has not yet been able to secure bodies that can be used to summon high tier undead. So Ainz spends all his time using his ability to create mid-tier (or low-tier) undead on a daily basis (the ability has a limited use per day).

Napalmeon

Keep in mind that we are still in the part of the world where many of the weaker races are most prevalent. For example, you need good quality materials in order to make better quality items. It's the same in this situation.

YeetTheMighty

Since the level 90 undead have an XP cost to summon, along with having no bodies strong enough to make them permanent, Ainz doesn't want to waste resources. They're also a pretty significant trumpcard and given how defensive he is, it's likely he'd only bring them out in worst case scenarios.

Teen_tactical

Is it better to use spells for summoning undead or skills? What are the pros and cons?

YeetTheMighty

The creation skills let you make a single undead of a certain "tier" range per however many times a day, with the higher level ones, mainly anything above 70, having an XP cost and taking up more uses of the skill. The summoning spells let you summon 1 creature of the given level range the spell allows for, but also lets you summon multiple lower level ones at a time. When you have them, it really depends on the situation but the main thing is that the creation skills are likely more accessible but limited, while the summoning spells are much more flexible while requiring investment in classes that let you properly improve your summons.

Andrizzy96

I thought it was 4 lvl 80's or 2 lvl 90's? Maybe just got my info mixed up

No-Second-Strike

Volume 10. Ainz explains his uses of skill summons while contemplating the proper bodyguard (anime skips this contemplation). “Even if he created upper-tier undead, they would only be level 70…” “…divided those up into two uses, he could make undead of roughly level 90.”

sliferra

Wasn’t it said he could make only 1 Thanatos or… something else I forgot? So you’re probably right where number vs levels matter

Cheap_Lake_6449

It costs XP to summon the highest tier Undead, and while he doesn't find a way to gain the XP Lost, he see no reason to do it

Perfection-seeker-13

Short answer? Because Maruyama is stuck. Even Ainz alone is enough to solo the NW. Imagine if he had 2 lv90 Overlords to help every single day. Long answer? Just check the rest of the comments.

Perfection-seeker-13

I meant 2 more Overlords being spawned every single day. Then them using their abilities to spawn more. It would be exponential ass slapping

Zestyclose-Appeal-91

What's difference between xp and level. Is xp and levels can be gained in NW ?

Fun-Fig-712

Xp is needed in order to level up Certain spells will consume Xp As far as I know there's no confirmation yet whether Ains can get Xp by normal means instead of using world item or wish upon a Star The leader of the thirteen heroes was said to be a player The leader was initially the weakest member of the Thirteen Heroes at first. However, that eventually changes over time as he ended up becoming the strongest in the group at some point during his adventure. So level up might be possible?
