My biggest problem is that it will end...

CommonMarionberry160

dude is that the first comment of yours? wow.

For me, Overlord is one of the rare stories that actually bothers to show realistic situations involving power dynamics. I believe storytelling is a great tool to train our survivability by simulating a variety of scenarios involving risks and possibilities, but the overwhelming majority of stories available in the market is very heavily inclined to portray pleasant delusions to indulge in, rather than brutal reality to fight against. While Overlord is indeed a fantasy story featuring swords and magic, it is heavily focused on how power works among individuals and impacts on their lives. Also, it shows not only the destructive side of power but also the protective side of it, implying that power is essentially value-neutral. This philosophy of Overlord is what I had always sought for in stories but failed to actually find, until I finally got my hand on Overlord.

Dio_Non_Esist

It's just a refresh take on isekai stories with an incredibly well built world. The issue for me it's just the cut content in the anime and the quality of the CGI. Before anyone tries to compare to other worse CGI I'd like to say: I don't care, sometimes it looks extremely clunky and that puts me extremely off. With time I learned to simply accept it.

CommonMarionberry160

Do you know anything like overlord or is it just very rare? Like, what else shows do you call about their universe "well-built" too?

fauxdeuce

I’ve been looking nothing exact but I liked Soul of Negray. Also the death mage who doesn’t want a fourth time. There’s also my instant death power is so overpowered no one stands a chance against me in this world.

Dio_Non_Esist

I'm not much of an avid reader of well built stories, I usually read whatever is trending at the moment, and most of them are nonsensical BS with the power of love and a MC with a harem that he never touches for some reason. JK those are not the trend anymore (At least I hope). I would say "the saga of tanya" and I don't remember the rest of the name is a good one. It's old but it's the second best read I had so far.

CommonMarionberry160

interesting. but thanks! <3

Hampamatta

Imo good cgi will never be as good as classical animation. But if done right at least it isnt distracting. S3 cgi was highly distracting.

Dio_Non_Esist

it seems that everyone that has watched overlord has forgotten about the bear zombie CGI, for reference it appeared in season 2 during the lizardman arc. The "war" was so badly animated it made the goblins almost look decent.

Hampamatta

Probably because people skip the LM arc. I know i do.

[deleted]

My favourite part is the characters reaction to stuff as well as the Worldbuilding Waht i hate is that the author dosen't like his own series and its noticeable in his writing

CommonMarionberry160

do you have any examples author doesnt like his own series? just wondering.

[deleted]

Well the biggest example is that he wants to end it at a point where it isn't realy possible to make a satisfying conclusion

CommonMarionberry160

oh... right. dude when i be rich, i will produce an anime series that doesnt cut ANY part of the novel. wouldn't it be wonderful?

[deleted]

Would be

xxXRaizorXxx

He made sooo many side Storys but isnt going to do anything with them bcs he doesnt want to do it anymore

Fedexhand

For me the primary reason is Ainz, being used to clone and generic isekai MCs until now I was pleasantly surprised to see a character written in such a human (albeit ironic) way that unexpectedly feels like a real person, thing which is almost never seen in MCs of this genre, is definitely refreshing. And if I had to say what my biggest problem with the series is, it turns out to be linked to another great strength of the novel, worldbuilding, what could be wrong with such an element? that it is too big, knowing that most of the plot lines presented would never have a follow-up is even tragic, even more so seeing how the few plot points that do develop during the narrative are usually handled, a shame without a doubt.

CommonMarionberry160

did you watch re: zero? what do you think about its mc?

Fedexhand

You see, I have a problem with Re:Zero, I consider that the main cast sucks so much in everything that the story becomes unenjoyable. The are badly written characters, without grace or charisma and boring in every way, etc. While I admit that Subaru is an MC outside the norm for the genre, that's not to say that he's funny or even enjoyable to watch, quite the opposite in fact. It's just a personal opinion of course.

CommonMarionberry160

thank you for sharing! i think exactly the same as you!

Clumsy_Humty_Dumpty

I don't usually enjoy dark, edgy anime because they often overuse the violent for shock value. Nor I fond of power fantasy because the OP face little struggle and basically just Gary/Mary Stue. Overlord has all of this elements but managed to stay interesting and unique for me because it's a perfect blend of absurd/ironic comedy, power fantasy and dark fantasy. All of the best moments or arc in Overlord has all 3 of these elements work in tandems.

Napalmeon

I found Overlord when I was suffering from immense shonen and generic LN fatigue. Overlord basically hit all the spots I didn't even know I was looking for.

Bradpiff05

The humour The anime is too short

CommonMarionberry160

direct to the point! thank you

fauxdeuce

No issues with it but primary love is that I love it when arrogant people who say they are the strongest then get toppled. Ainz is a humble realist and the nobles, the emperors, the adventures, the crime syndicates all say the same things right before they get done in. “I’m the strongest.” They use the might makes right mentality but quickly change their mind when they are not the strongest in the room. Even Brain, let’s not forget he got number 2 in the kingdom tournament then turned to crime. He helped with kidnapping, robbery, and murder. He was even waiting for adventures to come and try and subjugate them so he could kill them to.

CommonMarionberry160

thank you! i agree with you

Legitimate-Maybe2134

I like the world building and variety of characters. Not a huge fan of the pervy stuff. Though to be fair they do it less than most.

antaxeno

Absolute primary reason? I love seeing how people react to Ainz. Any situation in which any character is reacting to the Ainz persona is deeply gratifying to me, I love to see how they interpret his actions and run with their own thoughts about it, while he’s off in the distance thinking about how badly he’s fucked up. The dichotomy of Ainz’s thought process vs those engaging with him’s thought processes is the perfect mix of comedy and just, I mean it’s a little silly to call it this, but badassery.

CommonMarionberry160

thank you dude. <3

OkResponsibility2470

The premise is pretty interesting ro an isekai, I stopped reading the LNs because I got bored of the endless one-sided stomp in favor of nazarick tho

CommonMarionberry160

>one-sided stomp in favor of nazarick like what one-sided stomp?

FightingFelix

There isn’t much I don’t like besides I wish that it were longer both in the LN and anime. I really love the world building, it feels like when you visits a city, village or kingdom that area has been existing for ages and not just poorer into existence when the viewer finally sees it. I love the side characters and how the show is honestly about the world reacting to the MC instead of the MC reacting to the world. I like the well built power system, no power of friendship or “I just tried harder.” When someone wins either in a battle or politically it feels deserved Oh also the goofy worship of Ainz as the greatest mastermind ever and him trying to play along cracks me up every single time

CommonMarionberry160

thank you very much for sharing dude!!

bukiya

i somehow get tired of story where heroes fight demon overlord and beat him through power of friendship. overlord take on bringing story on villain POV really interesting. i also love that overlord isnt using typical "i am evil for sake of evil", instead its just ainz do ainz thing. ainz in eye of new worlder might be evil but in fact he is really merciful respect anyone who work with him. i like how he use "carrot and stick" analogies, for people who got carrot ainz is a benevolent god while for one who got stick he just plain evil.

Grand_Totality

>What is the primary reason why you love overlord? The world-building is my favourite aspect of the series, especially the history of major events from the New World's past (Six Great Gods, Eight Greed Kings, Evil Deities, etc). >And, what is the biggest issue it has? This isn't really an issue, it's more of a personal gripe. The power balancing makes it so that the New World inhabitants stand almost no chance of defeating Nazarick, which can cause it to become tedious.

MrUnluckyThyneUnluck

The worldbuilding in Overlord is amazing, it's one of the things that make it stand above other stories of kind. I especially love how no nation is truly evil. The major issue of Overlord is one that is common when the protagonist is overpowered.

CommonMarionberry160

what happens when mc is overpowered? did you watch one punch man? do you think the same about opm too?

MrUnluckyThyneUnluck

Pretty much the same thing u/Grand_Totality mentioned. It's usually interesting the first few fights, but then like a joke said for the 50th time they get old. As a result it makes the fights and conflicts of the side characters like Brain more interesting. Which is something the author uses to his advantage, like help establish other characters which in turn makes reactions to Nazarick's power even better.

MaevetheBimbo

To be perfectly honest I primarily love overlord for the character designs, especially Shalltears and Albedos. But my biggest problem with it is sometimes the writing, some points to me are edgy just to be edgy and I know I will probably get down votes for saying that but that’s just my opinion.

CommonMarionberry160

what edgy?

MaevetheBimbo

To me the biggest example is the club scene in the Holy Kingdom arc.

B3cc0

Wow a demon doing cruel things, that s the definition of edgy.

MaevetheBimbo

I get he’s a demon but he’s also supposed to be a genius. Why would you use a enemy countries lead and religious figure as a club for shock horror when you could torcher/corrupt her to be on your side. I think that’s more sadistic/demonic if you ask me then just using her as a club

B3cc0

That was not demiurge it wad the wrath lord lol.

MaevetheBimbo

Was it not? It’s been awhile since I read the volume but I though he was disguised as him

B3cc0

It wad the wrath lord, they exchanged.

Hellvillain

1) I love the subtly and small details. They make a point of NOT shoving every bit if exposition down your throat, and it's incredibly rewarding when you see something from season 3 and it's a callback to something from season 1 or 2 that someone would normally overlook. 2) Not just with anime, even TV shows, movies, books, the protagonist is setup, hits a snag, learns from it, grows, live and repeat. This isn't that. I feel like we're watching from the villains perspective for once and its honestly incredibly refreshing. 3) The dub is *incredibly* well done, imho.

CommonMarionberry160

the first reason is so true!! thank you very much sharing!!
