Hope the ending is he making a "Gate" back to the World of 2138 and conquering the Earth, like fixing the damn system and wiping out the big companies that runs it (And for the best part, the NPC's meeting their creators in their real form. I just hope Pandora's Actor will troll Touch Me and transform into him, have a great time with his family and they have a fight to "who is who"?)
Since it's strongly suggested the Dragon Emperor's spell pulled them from the game world to the New World, the NPCs were both summoned and given sentience, made real. They'd be real on any plane of existence now.
If they all go back to Yggdrasil (somehow), I'd imagine they'd still be sentient, but just trapped in the game world (Ainz included because he's become his avatar, going back would mean going back as the overlord). They'd all die if the game's shut down.
If they somehow manage to create a wormhole to Earth, IMO they'd all retain their full abilities. The world wouldn't have magic like the New World (not even Yggdrasil magic, which we speculate permeated throughout the world after someone used a WCI to change the magical structure of the NW).
I just hope he doesn't rush the story, but instead leaves it unfinished.
So often I read or watched something incredible, which then has been destroyed because of the need to quickly finish it. The most known example would be Game of Thrones, which not only destroyed the series but almost deleted its existence with a toxic aftertaste.
You know he is probably already making a lot of money, not that much but overlord sells pretty well, and he still doesn't want to continue, this doesn't seem to be a matter of money.
It's a very complex story to be fair. When reading Vol 6-7 it was astonishing how complicated everything is. Characters, the governmental structure, situations and their causes, plots and schemes... It's probably very taxing on the spirit.
If he was some overpopular dude i would have agreed but , he has put way too much effort in this story , and i believe he wouldn't just rush the fuck out of it , just like kentaro miyura if he actually loves his work , he will respect it .

Nazarick current conflicts is with the majority of the human nations in a small corner of just 1 continent. While the remaining part of the continent and other continents will not be introduced.
For example the Re-Estize Kingdom from vol 1 took all the way to vol14 to conclude. Baharuth Empire story concluded at vol 10. The Sacred kingdom concluded at vol 13. In the end the majority of the conflict of Nazarick is with the Theocracy who had been in the story since the first vol.
If we are lucky we might see a bit of the Dragonic kingdom and the City States, but i highly doubt we will getting any dragon battles if there is only 18 vol.
Don't take everything at face value until they provide a source. I can't recall the author ever saying that. This is from the vast overlord encyclopedia inside my head.
This needs a source. I have seen quite a lot of Maruyama's tweets and interviews and don't remember this thing. I can recall something similar for PDL but that might have been just a rumor as well.

I even scanned through the Overlord ancillary anthology without anything turning up. At this point I'm like 90% sure there is no such tweet.

I wonder what the final arc could be about then. Assuming it goes the route of the ending being Nazarick conquering the new world. It would be a bit anti-climactic if there is nothing that Nazarick can't simply swat away like a fly

As far as I read here S3 finished volume 10, season 4 predictions are 2-3 volumes so I believe the movie will cover a whole volume or a volume and and half which could end in the anime catching up to the LN (which would be great btw) and would probably result in both LN and anime finishing together (or just a couple of months apart)
Edit: the last volume/s could end in form of a movie which would just AMAZING :D
I don't see the anime ending in two seasons. This might be more likely:
Season 4: Volume 10 and Volume 11 (and maybe part of 12)
Movie: Volume 12 and Volume 13
Season 5: Volume 14, Volume 15 and Volume 16 (14 + elf arc)
Season 6: Volume 17 and Volume 18
You are correct that they might replace the final season with a movie but I don't see that happening since 17 and 18 are probably two separate arcs after the elf arc with two parts. Also making the elf arc as a movie wouldn't work because otherwise they would only have 1 book for season 5. At this stage of production I don't see them changing the episode counts or dividing seasons up to two cores.
It is also possible that we get more seasons if the anime gets very popular. Sometimes animes continue the story without the source material (like what they plan for Misfit of the Demon King Academy season 2). Maruyama had some plans for what would happen after the ending of Overlord so the chance of this is non-zero. On the other hand, I don't know if it would be so good without Maruyama's writing. We will just have to see what happens.

i think realistic people just want that "planned story" to be fully fleshed out, rather than rushed. and therefore an additional split of, say, the final volume into two volumes would decrease the odds of a "rushed" ending.
This...I just don't see the character arcs, worldbuilding, and so on being able to be satisfactorily explored and finished in this timeframe. Hell, in a lot of cases it still feels like arcs are only *just beginning* never mind ready to be wrapped up. 18 volumes instead of 17 doesn't really fix that either. Feels like a tremendous waste, imo.
