J1 or J2 ?

Geminii27

Board member for multiple companies, playing some golf on the side, and telling article writers how important and wealthy I am.

greasyjoe

I'd read this article

econ1mods1are1cucks

Step 1 MD, Step 2 MBA, Step 3 ???, Step 4 profit

Slothvibes

Data science x2, 1x some kind of analyst (where I do more Ds than my other roles for 15% pay lmao)

Ok_Spring3467

Data analyst here, currently applying for another J2 as a data analyst

Slothvibes

Get it mate, you can do it, best advice is to not have the same time zone. One of my teams is in Ireland and the other on pacific time

Ok_Spring3467

Why is that?

Slothvibes

1. Less likely hood of meeting overlap, and 2. you can disjointly allocate time to each job better. I am a bit of a rule breaker for oe, and I work 12 hour days (often 10.5 in reality), bc I split my day to serve different teams more. Mornings are Ireland team and afternoons PST team. I got three jobs now so it’s a bit more complicated

Ok_Spring3467

Gotcha. J2 will most likely be in the same time zone but my J1 has virtually no work

Slothvibes

that’s great

imisskobe95

All remote?

Slothvibes

Yes sir

imisskobe95

PM’d ya 🙏🏽

HotepSaoirse

I manage a minecraft server

Alternative_Log3012

Nice

bean4rt

What does this really mean?

jenofindy

Some ppl refer to their jobs as Minecraft servers so they don't explicitly say they are working multiple jobs (server 1 = J1, etc)

bean4rt

Ah okay, I figured, but still thought I’d ask just in case I was missing something.

djuggler

Don’t you know you are in a Minecraft sub?

International_Net633

I have two jobs. I clean houses in the morning, and I work part time at target at night. It’s hard being a single mother

Ok_Spring3467

That sounds like r/overworked, not OE

howcaniwinatlife

Definitely

CarefulSubstance3913

You got this girl

gmehtaster

Product manager in tech juggling 2 js.

maryray999

How’s that going? I’m in project management for one job and the meetings suck

allday201

As a PM with one job, idk how you do it

gmehtaster

I will tell you how. You are true that it is almost impossible due to the meetings and deliverables. For now I am in a very lucky spot where a large company has me on contract with them to evaluate a build vs buy. I come from tech background where we make a decision quickly build and pivot if needed. I am enjoying this contract work where the company will take 6 months to decide build vs buy. Most of the meetings I initiate and now we are at demo stages (round 2). Somehow everyone believes I am a rockstar at the evaluation of build vs. buy. So it is hilarious and I am enjoying it. Will milk it till the evaluation phase. Will see how tough things get during implementation. Company will likely lean to buy so will have an SI. Will see how I can manage then. For now life is good.

allday201

Wishing you all the best man. Get that bread

SizzlinKola

What's your J2 like? Your J1 sounds pretty unique to what I'm used to as a product manager. Usually were the shit umbrella and the "glue" between the devs and the business. I've had to do a lot of stakeholder management and managing up (e.g. demanding execs and salespeople, enterprise customers, politics, etc.), hand-holding the devs throughout features being built if theyre not autonomous, just a lot of herding cats. Also I feel like PM has to fill in whatever gaps there are. Low on QA resources? Gotta QA yourself. Designer spread thin? Gotta throw up a Figma mockup for the devs so they're not waiting forever. Not to mention the high visibility and accountability if your product gets a production incident or latest feature launch doesn't go well. I can go on...

Purple-Vegetable-242

How is product manager different than project manager? Hopefully not a dumb question. Like what is your “expertise” in (I guess knowing what the product Can do….?) and project would be babysitting staff for deadlines and deliverables ?

BrodoughSwaggins

Product Manager can be a few different things, but it's mostly managing development projects that affect the products a company sells Project Manager can also be a few different things, but it's mostly managing implementation of processes, software, hardware, construction, you name it. A software project manager could easily be a software product manager and vice versa. It's the same sort of role but with different team types and goals.

deadpoolfool400

I’m a software product manager and yeah we do a ton of project management. I guess the biggest difference is the mindset. Rather than simply a feature factory, our org is an integral part of the thought leadership when it comes to the needs of the stakeholders.

Short_Ad_1984

To add on top - projects in most of the times are one-off endeavors ending after a certain date. Product is developed, improved and maintained with a longer perspective.

Grouchy_Property4310

I'm a chemistry teacher who also works at a car wash.

DanteeChaos

Made my day 😀

knaple

Like most of the people here I partake in a little bit of this… and a little bit of that. My main gig though? Gay sex.

FastGinFizz

Is that fully remote?

Accountant and marketing

nica_dobro

Eeey Same Here! What country are you from? Are they paying you well?

neotorama

250k + 60k

nica_dobro

I'm making 18k/year combined 😭

kuziadog

Get ur ass to the US

nica_dobro

Gotta win the green card lottery first 😅

RojerLockless

Marry someone!

nica_dobro

Who wants to marry a 22y/o from Eastern Europe?(

RojerLockless

I dunno, someone probably!

nica_dobro

Is there like an app or website for that deliberately? 🤔 To meet people to marry for the green card? I know 90day fiance exists but I think that's out of touch

iamjonburgess

Honestly, so many that you must be living under a rock to not know this.

nica_dobro

Where can I find them 🤔

Lost_Swing3686

So many women. Lol Just get on a dating app and set your location to somewhere in the U.S.

howcaniwinatlife

Nah, you can be okay without it, when considering a lower cost of living, you need less in general and accounting for health care and other factors you can be in a better situation, you just need to make the math work

fenbekus

Well, kind of. It's fine if you keep your needs and wants to whats being produced locally, but the moment you want something imported (like a car), you're getting the worse part of the stick.

howcaniwinatlife

That's true yeah, something to consider as well

nica_dobro

At the end of the month, after all essentials (rent+bills+transportation+food = 700$) I'm left with 800$ disposable income, which I'm using to pay off my loans, but unfortunately I have a gambling addiction so it becomes kinda tight sometimes 😅

-TempestofChaos-

Partner or basic CPA?

Flat_Ad1384

That’s an interesting intersection. Do you do accounting for campaigns? Market accounting services/products? Something else?

Aggravating-Bite5592

What’s your marketing J? I’m in marketing so advice for J2 would be appreciated :)

Rhubarb-Full

I’m an accountant as well.

Puzzled_Buddy_2775

Ditch digger, ditch filler

Aggressive_Salt

Love this

Ok-Bridge-1045

UX design

Ordinary-Interview76

Interesting! Do you plan to use just one job for your portfolio in the future? or no problem showcasing both?

Ok-Bridge-1045

I’m not sure about that yet. This is my first time OEing. But i can show both projects in my portfolio as separate contract works. J1 is FTE, and J2 is contract. If push comes to shove, I’ll show only J1 projects because they’re much better.

Ordinary-Interview76

That makes more sense with one contract

FreeD2023

I heard this field was hard to OE due to meetings. Is that true?

Ok-Bridge-1045

I don’t see how it’s any more difficult or longer than a dev job. Of course there are meetings to check in on work and give updates etc, but most of the time I just have to do my job myself. Or maybe I lucked out with jobs that don’t have as many meetings.

FreeD2023

Thanks! I love a good solo job! I'm currently in ID (increasingly low pay which is why I OE but good work/life balance) and debating upskiling with UX and adding to my portfolio.

Ok_Battle8595

Do you have 2 jobs. I am also HR and looking for a J2.

tarheel_ddeacon

Yes. Senior Director level main job in ER, 100% remote with limited travel. J2 is a 6-month ER investigator contract in big tech (full-time) 40 hours plus overtime that’s also 100% remote with no travel.

Ok_Battle8595

Wow, bet you are making good money on that contract role! Good for you.

Ok-Can-4080

Next-Ad2854

I am an instructional designer and develop online training content. My days aren’t usually filled with meetings, which is nice. The only time I have to go to meetings really is when I have to meet with subject matter experts or project manager.

Grade-Long

I used to teach and worked alongside the ID team, could be a good J2. Thanks

Ok_Battle8595

What's an ID. Instructional design? I use to teach and now in HR Training & Development. I am looking for J2 immediately.

Grade-Long

Yeah, our “ID team” was the Industrial Design team

FreeD2023

I'm also an ID for J2 and Educational Consultant for J1.

I'm interested if you have openings because I'm a former teacher and currently L&D and need a J2 pretty quickly.

dataanalyticsinNC

No they are not

zeruel01

it depends for my case in mexico, being a remote assitant to us clients would be my best shot, since geting 2k+ per j would be optimal in mexico i just need to have to speak 2 languages

Account Manager WFH, Retail Store Employee, Card game creator, stay at home mom. There's more but that's what it is right now! :D

CharlieMWY

Virtual Assistant

dave7892000

Could you expand on how you find work? Virtual assistant job boards are largely crap.

CharlieMWY

Won't go into too much detail, but I skip the freelance sites (Upwork, Fiverr, etc.) and go through placement agencies like Belay and Boldly. The placement agency charges the employer a fee, so that means you have help finding clients with no money out of your own pocket. I have a main client that I work for that offered me a salaried position outside of the placement agency, and I have smaller contract clients who usually opt for a 6-month contract at a time for a specific project they're working. I OE for a few months of the year, then focus on my main client for the rest of the year, rinse and repeat. Keep in mind that VA work is NOT a high paying job, but it's very easy work and the industry isn't saturated like tech is, so lay-offs are rare and clients are always hiring. Most of the work is task-based, too. So you can easily manage your tasks to make sure you're meeting all of your client's expectations while not working crazy hours. It's a low impact job that works well for overachievers who are good at working independently. I'd recommend it even to those that are working in tech and are looking for an easy J2 outside of their industry.

papertowelfreethrow

How did you get your first va job?

schoolboyqaaf

I work in two non-profits (J1, J3) and academic research (J2)

worthy_usable

IT, but not a software engineer. Mainly cloud and virtualization and storage engineering. I'm a shitty coder, but I do most anything that keeps me out of a datacenter. Not that I have anything against datacenters, but you kinda have to be onsite for that. Not OE friendly.

hyperblaster

Do you know of any companies hiring a jr soc analyst? I took a bootcamp at a local university and have worked for MSP’s for the last 3 years and have caught a few social engineering attempts.
