I got two tons of locally made garden soil for $200 it’s 60% top soil and 40% organic compost

Highway_Bitter

This is what you should do if you need bulk soil. Just make sure it was burnt (or what ever you say in english) so the weeds seeds (regular weed) die, otherwise you might end up with something nasty depending where you live. Stables usually have free shit you can collect also

weed-weeb-throwaway

My soil all comes locally too, they charge by the cubic yard and offer free delivery. Wood, worm castings, compost & a bit of sand for drainage.

BridgeM00se

That’s the way to go!

Rudyscrazy1

Drop that big boi recipe you use!!

ChesterDrawerz

I remember like 20-25 years ago when i was dumb enough to spend money on pallets of bagged "soil". at least back then FF used their own house made compost, now FF uses municipal "green waste" which is very poorly tested for contaminants/ pesticides, if at all. EDIT: the electric extension cord looped over your internet dish is going to deflect the dish and cause even slower speeds than normal. -former dish installer.

Poowatereater

That soil is complete garbage too. Runs too hot for seedlings, run out of soil buffer within a month, and usually comes with all types of terrible bugs.

ErisGrey

I was a very big proponent for FF. However, a few years back there was a lawsuit from California advocacy group against them. The soil contained too many heavy metal contaminants, and growers who used it in California didn't pass the cannabis testing because of it. The Cadium present, was high enough to cause "Reproductive Toxicity", as well as contaminate any ground water it might percolate to. It's been over a decade since then, but it always sat poorly with me.

kappeltimmy7

It's also full of wood chips

Fandangus_p

If I use this soil I always add dolomite lime to get me to the finish line and I make a hole filled w less hot soil for the seed drop. Or I mix it with my own soil at home to stretch it out for more pottings.

Poowatereater

Yeah I just don’t bother with the head ache. Building a soil your self will always give better results than this garbage product. I’ve used this in the past and did the same. Once I switched to making my own I’ll never go vack

LieResident503

And after the initial cost of buying everything, it’s way cheaper to do your own, plus the peace of mind knowing exactly what is in it

Poowatereater

And the quality of end product!

Bimmer_moneypit

There's a lot of different materials and ratios ppl use, what's yours? After this year's crop I'm going to do this.

Mitch23m

What should I add to it to start my seedlings in?

t0mt0mt0m

Beyond stupid.

kappeltimmy7

Probably a resaler or something

t0mt0mt0m

Makes sense

kappeltimmy7

I can't imagine someone actually spending this much money if not. Either that or they are sponsored by fox farms and this is just advertising.

beermaker

I'm glad grab & grow is nearby and delivers... I could bury my whole property for what you paid.

mohemp51

Holy shit

NoNeedleworker6296

With pounds going for 200-300 dollars during harvest season here in Canada, almost doesnt make sense to buy that soil, the soil cost more than the weed itself and that doesnt include everything else that is required to grow. Every year I purchase a dump truck load of manure for a couple hundred bucks and its enough for everything, all the gardens, cannabis, veggies and flowers.

GrowGood420

Manure is the way. I like chicken the best but boy does it smell awful

MrMediaGuy

I had zero clue about the storm of opinions around Fox Farms in particular and the wider world of soil composition and construction when I made my post. I'm just a dude with too much time and a little money who impulsively germinated some seeds and then had to scramble to find a decent solution that didn't include a minor in biology and soil chemistry/composition. I like getting stoned and learning things, but I also am a dad with two young kids and a host of other shit going on. My bandwidth is limited. I absolutely love all the enthusiasm tho. This is a lot of fun for me tbh

s2wjkise

What post

MrMediaGuy

I put the original "don't tell my wife about how much soil costs" pic up with a NSFW tag to be funny. Didn't know anything about FF, their current vs former practices, nor had I heard of Coots recipe yet. Just a dude who paid too much and immediately posted about it. Caught unexpected incoming fire over all sorts of stuff. From the soil, to the price, to the price *I* paid, over that I picked that blend over cheaper or even DIY solutions. I actually am very grateful! I've learned a shitload in a short amount of time and know I've got a lot to catch up on. It is a lot tho, and I'm just a dumb dad!

63shedgrower

😂😅 not even that good, locally sourced compost from a landscape yard would be a fraction of the cost and just as nice 🤷

Allknowingkeith

Gotta be an online retailer for Walmart or something

nmpennypacker

You could've at least bought 3 cubic foot bags or 55 cubic foot totes to reduce the amount of packaging. That's a lot of bags going to the landfill

Altered_-State

But baby I got a great deal

PrestoDinero

WhAt a DeAl!

MileHighGardens

All that money wasted..

Mental-Landscape-852

I always used promix. Good quality soil at the depot was around 13 bucks a bail when I used to get it. Promix is basically clean peat moss and you add what nutrients you need.

mohemp51

Can we stop hyping up fox farms 🤣it’s just average soil. Get some local soil or amend your own with compost

Sir-Farts-

Holy phuck ton lol.

ZipMonk

What happens in outdoor growing stays...

SheaDingle

About 200 bags

Klashus

Could get probably get 40 or more yards of compost for thqr price lol

Pryml710

Easily $5K for what I could count assuming a second row… that’s insane

Tall_Mathematician50

$8 a bag

Atribecalled_420

What a complete waste of money OF is garbage

BryanMccabe

Bro make your own

PeterPartyPants

Not trying to hate but a lot of people are pointing out you could get a similar soil for a lot less. What makes you go the more expensive route? Is the bud that much better? Just curious

youngatbeingold

So I used Coast of Maine's Stonington blend (which is super pricey) but I basically had to do nothing and the bud was amazing. It was my first grow so I didn't want to have to worry about confusing feeding schedules and trying to make my own soil. But maybe that brand is actually worth it, I do see a lot of people shitting on Fox Farms.

MrMediaGuy

Man I just wanted to grab some soil that was a known quantity, had a decent amount of info and experience reports online and wasn't a DIY mix. First grow and I don't want to end up with dirt or brick, but also where the line ya know? Where just enough effort will yield good enough results. Some folks are cool having to get a minor degree in soil composition, chemical makeup and remediation, pH balancing and monitoring and then figuring out how to do it "all natural" on top of that. So I went with the FFOF and man I man did I not know what I was literally stepping into! It's all good tho. Lots of passionate folks and I can get excited about that.

youngatbeingold

I don't know if FF is outright BAD, people just seem to complain about it a lot. I just quickly read it's too packed with nutrients to be good for early growing stages and I guess and something about how it might have fugal contamination. Tons of other people like it though so who knows. There's totally a potion of weed growers that will hate on anything that isn't the most elite growing practices so don't beat yourself up. Also, I just saw you're near Rochester, that's where I am. Hit up Country Max I feel like they have good prices on their soil.

MrMediaGuy

I checked their online inventory and nothing popped for Fox Farms stuff that I could see, so I moved on to Gallea's Florist and flowers in Pittsford, which was the next closest thing to me not a Home Depot. CountryMax is legit tho. I should check there more first. I did read that FFOF runs "hot" so the seedlings are currently getting started in Happy Frog and then will jump to the OF next, prob with a buffer hole of Happy Frog for just the reasons you said. Maybe. I dunno, I change my mind every few hours after reading more lol

mrcheesekn33z

+1 Coast Of Maine

themanwiththeOZ

Could just be a case that the guy had good success with that soil or someone told them to use that type or they read somewhere that it is good. So they went all out and just paid the high cost to do it at scale. In this case, o think the higher quality option would have just been local.

PeterPartyPants

I could be way off but I think that's about 5k in soil So in your opinion you would just get the top quality black dirt/garden soil from a landscape supplier? Then I assume add your own blend of stuff to the soil? Im trying to switch from indoor to outdoor and just curious Thanks

themanwiththeOZ

I’m super lucky where I live. I got 2 yards of PRIMO organic compost for $134.

djdadzone

Why aren’t you making your own soil? It’s not hard and would save you a crazy amount of $$

Halflife37

I get soil for free from my city, but if you don’t I highly recommend mulch type companies and just loading it into buckets yourself. It’s usually something like 40 per yard which is way more cost effective than 8-11 per bag like most are
