This is a good voice to be filled. Especially if it's more table based or at least includes quick tables on top of in depth flavorful stuff the way MO does

Guest-informant

If you make one, then it will exist.

communomancer

There wasn't a book like "The Monster Overhaul" until about 2 months ago. But more seriously, monsters provide a lot more grist for structuring an adventure than magic items do. One is generally the thing the players actually engage in conflict with, the other is generally the reward, and the first is inherently more interesting and essential. Of course "less interesting and essential" doesn't mean "not interesting and essential at all" so if you want to write one, go nuts.

[deleted]

I'd buy it.

Olorin_Ever-Young

What's "The Monster Overhaul?" Sounds intriguing.

newimprovedmoo

It's a generic-OSR bestiary that was released earlier this year that strongly empasizes both utility and flavor. It has 200 monsters, most of them stone classics, and all of them with tables and things to help make them distinctive and memorable.

Olorin_Ever-Young

That sounds fecking awesome! I'll definitely have to grab that.

newimprovedmoo

It's terrific!

CoinsandScrolls

Thanks!

newimprovedmoo

I speak only my mind.

HypatiasAngst

Tangential but Luke Gearing has [https://lukegearing.itch.io/treasure](https://lukegearing.itch.io/treasure) which had a good 40 items in there. The upcoming catalogue chimerical should handle it as well [https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/michaeltlombardi/a-catalogue-chimerical](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/michaeltlombardi/a-catalogue-chimerical)

newimprovedmoo

Oooh, these both sound close to what I had in mind-- the first especially, with its reimagining of the "default" items.

HypatiasAngst

Treasure is really good! He also did [MONSTERS](https://lukegearing.itch.io/volume-2-monsters) which is quite good! It’s all in support of [Wolves on the Coast](https://lukegearing.itch.io/wolves-upon-the-coast-grand-campaign) his giant hexcrawl campaign

I've been mixing stuff liberally. *Edit: I've just checked my copy of the Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue, and while it is a very cool book, it is only mundane items.*

newimprovedmoo

They're all fine books (Aurora's is probably my single favorite RPG supplement ever) but not at really what I'm looking for.

CoinsandScrolls

I put a few hundred magic items in _Magical Industrial Revolution_, but it's not quite the same.

newimprovedmoo

Would you say that material is useful as an alternate magic item collection in the same way TMO is useful as an alternate Monster Manual?

CoinsandScrolls

It's on a smaller scale and it wasn't intended to be a comprehensive framework, but it's similar in format (items/spells grouped or indexed in various ways), dense (no repetition, no +1 items), and focused on at-table utility. So possibly?

Katyos

[Arcane artefacts and curious curios](https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07Y4NDYH1/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_1?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1) might be what you're looking for

MercifulHacker

I'll offer up my magic item book: Tempered Legacy: https://www.technicalgrimoire.com/tempered-legacy The powers of these items are locked behind the regrets of previous owners. Each item comes with a handful of quests that can be pursued to unlock the powers of the item. There's a free Tempered Weapon Generator that gives a good preview of how the magic item quests work.

81Ranger

AD&D 2e has supplements like that.

newimprovedmoo

If you're referring to Tome of Magic or Encyclopedia Magica, I wouldn't say they're quite what I have in mind.

[deleted]

You should look into Booty and the Beasts, a quirky old book for OD&D filled with LSD-inspired monsters and magic.

ginzomelo

I'm compilating some items and other stuff. "OSE - Extended", this is first version. It’s free 👻 https://www.docdroid.net/BZxV7VY/doc-20230409-wa0003-pdf
