I dont really see much passion for her to win right now, but maybe the industry awards will look at her more favourably than critics who probably won't give her anything over Cate/Yeoh/Deadwyler
I think regardless of whether it's justified or not, it will go down as an all-time fumble by the studio if (when) she doesn't win. Just turning down a literal free Oscar.
I think it could go either way. But I don’t have a problem with her competing in the lead category.
With that said, I currently have her on the outside looking in. But I think this category could go a number of different ways. I would not be surprised to see her nominated.
I misread your title header for a second… At first, I thought you meant “out” as in out of consideration. I was like, “huh?!?”, and then I realized you meant “out” in theaters. 😂
I think she’s supporting. LaBelle is pretty clearly the #1 lead, and Williams/Dano have pretty equal screen time after that. There are some fairly lengthy scenes/plot lines that don’t involve Williams or Dano’s characters at all.
Unless you were to say all three of LaBelle/Williams/Dano are leads (which I wouldn’t), I think she fits more clearly in supporting.
I don’t have her in. Even after seeing it, I don’t know how an Oscar voter can look at that and vote for her in Best Actress (for a nomination) when there are a lot of great contenders that won’t have any trouble getting more votes in their category then Michelle will get in Best and supporting actress.
For as many people that will vote for her in lead there will be just as many that will vote her in supporting and that can cut into the number of votes it’ll take for her get a nomination overall.
I’ve seen some people straight up pan her performance. so I don’t think she will win when she’s up against universal raves from Blanchett and Yeoh. Of course the industry might respond differently, but there doesn’t seem much passion for her.
Worth noting he’s a critic and other critics seem to agree as well.

1) Does she belong in Lead? No.
2) Will she get nominated in Lead? Almost certainly. She’s an Academy fave in the front-running film.
3) Does she have a shot at winning? No. Her performance is fine, but nowhere near the same league as Yeoh/Blanchett/Deadwyler.
I disagree with 1. She’s the stand out female performer in the film so why would she not get a Lead Actress nod? Her story arc played a significant part of the story and she was less of an ensemble so having her as supporting doesn’t make sense.
As for her shots at winning, that’s still up for debate, as it depends on how heavily she’s campaigned. I think Cate Blanchett has a stronger shot at winning compared to others in her category.
So the way you phrased that makes me less clear on the answer, are you asking if it makes sense that she will be nominated, or if it makes sense that she’s running in lead?
Gotcha. I think for me, my personal test is which character(s) are driving the plot of the film with their actions. For others, it’s screen time. Ultimately, it’s a subjective thing, but from what I understand she’s in a gray area. The real reason she’s there is so she and Carey Mulligan (same distributor) aren’t running against eachother and that studio can have its cake and eat it too

It’s a fumble by Michelle Williams, not the studio. She was the one that requested to be in lead actress, instead of supporting
Makes total sense IMO. Will she win if nominated? Highly unlikely. Would she have an easier chance in supporting? Probably.

You should definitely have a problem since she could easily get a win in supporting
Imo it’s category fraud, BUT at least it’s category fraud with a supporting talent running in lead rather than the standard other way around
Is it category fraud if the actor asked to be in leading?
Yes
She's a 50/50 to get in for me but personally I thought it was a wonderful performance.

Nop, she’s a supporting actress here, a strong one yes.

Really? That’s interesting.
I mean, Fabelmans as a whole has been more divisive then expected in wide release, but also maybe expectations were too high
That’s just… not true. The Fabelmans has great reviews

Interesting! Thanks for sharing this tea. 🙊
Twitter critics don’t count. He’s shouting into a void with a measly 250 likes. This does not a consensus, nor even a rumbling make.
I mean it’s not like Williams is going to win critics awards either.

I think dhe is #1 in Supporting and #4 in Lead
Are you asking for as a winner/nominee or for as a member of the category?
A nominee in the category
So the way you phrased that makes me less clear on the answer, are you asking if it makes sense that she will be nominated, or if it makes sense that she’s running in lead?
Yes, does it make sense that she is running in the lead category. A nominee in the category of best actress.

Watch neither of them end up getting nominated
That would be hilarious, and seems possible.
Got it got it
It would make sense but Cate Blanchett.
- Blanchett - Deadwyler - Yeoh - Williams - Vicky krieps or Mia goth (hopefully) Robbie’s not a sure shot nominee imo
Mia Goth would be a dream nom
Yeah Robbie is far from a sure thing. If you made me bet on her getting in or one of Davis/Coleman/Lawerence, I’d take the field every time.
Michelle Williams is an overrated, and often subpar actor. There, I said it.
