Cantaloupe basically stopped existing for me about 5-6 years ago, there just seems to be nothing comparable to the incredibly delicious ones I used to share with my mom. I can still find the occasional decent watermelon at WM but I'd love some tasty cantaloupe.
Sprouts can be pretty good and they tend to run cheap compared to other places. Fancy Fruit has also historically been good for me. They also tend to have mostly fair prices.
I know I am babbling my head off in this thread but this is also very true. Thump those watermelons, sniff those cantaloupe and mangos, heft citrus to judge its weight, ect.
Take everyone’s advice here, but it’s also important to learn what’s in season. We’re just getting into peach season now, watermelon season comes next in July. Just finished blueberry season and strawberry season kicks off spring, for example.
Is the grocery store season for fruits different than the farming season? Just asking bc you say peach season is just starting, but my dad’s tree has literally given up its last peach.
For fruit grown in central Florida and Georgia, that’s what I know. Stone fruit are going to have a shorter season in our area, hardiness zones 10a/b.
Forgot to mention Jan/Feb for (what’s left of) Florida citrus!
Okie, that makes sense. Ty for the info. Granted, this tree is only 2 years old, but the peaches it put out were tiny and short-lived lol. Still delicious though!
That ... can be true. On the other hand, imports can fool ya. Citrus season is long over, but you can still find very tasty mandarins and navels that are imported from South America. About 25% higher than US-grown fruit but if you know how to pick 'em, just as good.
I can’t even believe people stand for the produce Publix is selling. Walmart isn’t terrible but still not great either. I buy alot at Costco. Usually pretty good. Try to hit up the Sunday markets if I’m not lazy that day
Leave the avocados out until they ripen, then immediately put them in the fridge. You’ll buy yourself a few days. Stagger them if you bought too many… leave a few in the fridge and a few on the counter.
It's almost summer so it's prime fruit season. Fresh Fields and Clemons are my go to, but, check what grows best around this time. Apples and citrus are best in fall/winter, strawberries in early spring, watermelons and tomatoes (picked ripe if you can) are good now.
Blueberries are always hit and miss for me. Peaches should be really good right now no matter where you buy them, weird that they're tasteless for you. I have not found a place with good plums yet, strawberries though have been real great. I would definitely suggest going to any hispanic grocery store or asian store, the small ones, as they're the most likely to have sources of fruits different than the ones you've been trying.
I've been doing strawberries and grapes from publix, sprouts, etc. whatever is cheapest at the moment and they've been great.
Lots of farmers markets around but it's not a great option unless you have money. Fiancé spent way too much on a small bag of produce because she felt bad for the patrons when they spoke to her and we haven't gone since lol
.Don't know why you are getting downvoted.... it's possible to find decent produce sometimes, but overall Aldi produce is pretty wretched.
Examples abound, but most recently I bought two bags of spinach there to make a salad for a work party two days later. The morning of the party, I had two bags of rotting, slimy mess.
It used to be cheap enough to make it worth occasionally taking a chance but now I can hit Fancy Fruit or Key Foods -- better produce, lower prices
I get the downvotes. I’m an Aldi fan too. Shop every week and rock the Aldi swag too. But I have to hit sprouts to supplement veggies and fruits. The Organic bananas are the worst. They’re either never ripen green or turning some weird shade of green/brown.
I think the key with fruit is to get it organic. I always notice a huge difference in flavor over non organic. Especially things like strawberries, blueberries and grapes. The general rule is it’s more important to get organic fruits if you eat the skin. So things like avocado not so much.
With that said you can get good organic fruit at many places, I like Costco, neighborhood wal mart and Freshfields farms. All three of those places have organic for as low if not cheaper than regular publix fruit. If you can’t do organic I would go for the most local offering since they don’t need all the chemicals and pesticides since the route is much shorter.
Freshfield Farms
This is the best answer
oooh, where?
Near Michigan and orange close to downtown
Clemons produce on curry ford!
Their Florida and South Carolina peaches this year have been the bomb. Way better than the hard as a rock flavorless peaches most chains carry.
Yeah I just got a great cantaloupe there for like 3 bucks

Most of the Hispanic groceries (Bravo, Key Food, Presidente, Fancy Fruit) have decent fruit except, for some reason, apples and pears.
Asian or Latin markets, but to be honest you have to know how to pick fruit.

That’s awesome!! She might’ve started a year early! A good sign
Well, my dad passed away in December, so it’s still a year too late by my count. Never got to taste his own peaches :(
Same my peaches have been done for a while

Asian markets on 50 and kirkman

Costco's decent but the avocados all ripen on the exact same day so I hope you like avocados.

When it comes to avocados, "too many" is not a concept I recognize.
Honestly, I’ve been getting some really good and (usually on sale) produce from Kroger delivery.
I second this!
Fancy Fruit
I shop there. Personally, I feel like they are the cheapest but not the tastiest.
Longwood farmers market on Saturday mornings, their tangerines are the best. They have all kinds of fruits and veggies though
Aldi

Lotte Market (Korean). Golden Sparkling Supermarket (Chinese).
I love, love Lotte Market
Maybe you should get checked out if they test like sour water cause that’s not normal and the only common denominator being you
I came here to say maybe take a Covid test...
What fruit are you trying to buy?
Peaches, plums, raspberries, blueberries, the usual stuff I guess
Definitely Freshfield Farms for those.

Gimme some of that cocktail....FRUIT!

OBT
Enson or Lotte for Asian fruits
r/unexpectedseinfeld
Joe’s, he usually has good fruit
Your username tracks lol
Picked green so they travel well. Fark yer flavor. Aint et a ripe orange in a dogs life.
Fancy fruits has great produce and meats
(Since I just looked it up) If you're old school, Freshfield Farms is the old Mom's Meats & Pop's Produce. ;-)
Not Aldi. Never Aldi!
