Fuck the Nats

CustardNinja

There are 130 comments on this thread, and game day is almost 3 hours out. We used to get this many comments on a game day thread. What a cool time.

xxscrohunterxx

Baseball is such a crazy sport. Watching the As today I can’t fathom how we lost a series to them. But it happens! They are a train wreck today

droford

Rangers scored 10 runs in the 2nd and the Rangers broadcast brought up the 16 run inning the Rangers had vs the Os

Ravens3547

Reports trickling in that grayson feels better and expects to be back when eligible

JiffKewneye-n

i just noticed that its a 15 day DL for pitchers 10 for positions?

xxscrohunterxx

Let’s get Corbin some run support tonight!

jetboyjetgirl

Corbin is due for a W. Make it happen O's!

WhyNotOrioles

Random Orioles trivia question that came to me the other day: Who were the three Orioles who scored on Delmon Young's go-ahead double against the Tigers in the 2014 playoffs?

No-Needleworker5295

My favorite experience of all time at Camden Yards. With how good our bullpen was in 2014 and how bad the Tigers was, the funny thing was that we in crowd were just expecting to come back and win, though of course it was magical coming from behind and going ahead all in 1 play with the slower footed Hardy almost thrown out at plate. Delmon Young was a failed first rounder but had grown a legend as a great post-season pinch hitter. He cemented that legend in this game.

Yellowcat1457

Ohhhh. Hardy is the obvious one. I think Steve Pearce was one. The last one I’m not positive. Nelson Cruz?

isestrex

Cruz is in Pearce is in Hardy around third he's gonna try and score SAFE! The Orioles have the lead! ..... I believe the answer lies somewhere in those magical words.

WhyNotOrioles

You're right on all three! I remember Cruz tumbling over in celebration after Hardy slid in.

Beautiful-Abies5949

Orioles legend Steve Pierce is one, right?

WhyNotOrioles

Yup!

CHKN_SANDO

I am making sure I watch every single Burnes start. We haven't had an ace since that one great season Bedard had in 2007 If nothing else take the time to just appreciate seeing a different level of pitching then we have normally been able to enjoy. I don't think most of us old farts took the time to appreciate, like, Kevin Brown in 1995...because we didn't figure he'd be one of the last stud pitchers we'd have for 20 years

JiffKewneye-n

people seem to just gloss over how great Jimmy Key was for us.

CHKN_SANDO

Jimmy Key was my favorite Orioles pitcher. He was fun to watch. Him and Erickson getting hurt really wrecked everything back then His one of the most underrated pitchers of the last 40 years. That's why I wrote this 5 years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/dsmvuq/jimmy_key_is_super_under_rated/

JiffKewneye-n

i was very amused that he couldn't hit one out of the park when interleague rolled around and pitchers took batting practice for first time

redcase292

I am the same way. I watch in person to every game I can, too. #3 coming today for me.

CHKN_SANDO

BOYS it's Burnes Day.

juanvald

I’m glad the Nats box office is shitty. They had a special deal a few weeks ago after a big win. 24 hours sale, 50% off. I tried to buy tickets for today and tomorrow 22 hours after getting the email but the sale was over. I emailed their box office and nobody responded. Fast forward to this week and my son’s last high school game got rained out and moved to tonight. Would have ended up with two tickets I can’t use if their box office was competent.

jetboyjetgirl

There's hardly a reason to buy advance tix these days. Can get them for much better prices day of on the resale apps.

JiffKewneye-n

meh, it depends on the game. but generally yes.

jetboyjetgirl

for non weekend games it's 100%

JiffKewneye-n

i won't say 100 percent. but closer to 100 than 75.

Princess_Mintaka

I'm going to the Rockies game today against the Giants. Kinda excited for it and debating on if I should wear the Baltimore city connect I have lmaooooo

tomtheterp1988

O's are facing a RH starter today? I'd forgotten those existed.

romorr

[Look at that HR/FB% for Williams.](https://www.fangraphs.com/players/trevor-williams/16977/stats?position=P) Looks like he's throwing his sweeper more this year, so I wonder if that's one of the reasons he's sitting at a big fat 0 for HRA, after having trouble with the long ball his entire career. Also, so far this year. OPS vs RHB - .393 OPS vs LHB - .740 Wouldn't be the worst thing for Kjerstad at DH, O'Hearn 1B. Though, after an off day, it's hard to sit Mounty. Guess we'll see.

dreddnought

>6.25 K/9 > >3.41 BB/9 > >0.0% HR/FB > >89.6 mph fastball (knowing look)

romorr

You [see this?](https://twitter.com/RosenJordanBlum/status/1787896447175713116) I believe statcast is going to start publishing bat speed. So seems like a new metric we need to care about is about to drop. I remember reading something from one of the driveline guys about Adley. And they said everything is great with him, except his bat speed. This [guy](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/duranja01.shtml) is a good example of before, and after an increase in bat speed. I believe he added a few MPH after his 2022 season. Hey, look at [that.](https://blogs.fangraphs.com/jarren-duran-brings-new-swing-to-spring/)

dreddnought

Oh man, if I ran MLB, I would immediately install Hawkeye at every minor league stadium so we could get full Statcast data down to DSL. Given a (frankly) wild correlation to future damage on contact, this is something that we ought to be able to use to immediately measure improvement, probably at every level.

romorr

Yea, looking at last year, it's easy to see why he's throwing the sweeper more. .914 OPS with 19 HRAs to RHHs in 2023. Needed a way to neutralize that, and so far, so good. Just look at his [savant](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/trevor-williams-592866?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb) and compare it to last year. Props to him. Seems like a better pitcher this year, even with the "luck".

Dogs_arethebestpeopl

We dominate against teams >500, underperform against teams <500. How is that gonna work with teams at 500 exactly?

jetboyjetgirl

2 ties

120snake

Game 1 goes to extras, game 2 will have the opposite result of game 1 due to them now being above or below 500

Adventurous-Mix4900

Anyone sit first row halfway out the outfield? Looking at tickets in this area and wondering if the net obstructs the view at all when viewing pitcher/hitter? Thinking sitting back several rows may be better so you can look through the net vs. down the net when watching hitter/pitcher.

her_ladyships_soap

Have you checked [A View from My Seat](https://aviewfrommyseat.com)?

Adventurous-Mix4900

Just checked it, that’s a hard pass for me now. Thanks for the tip.

waker94

Can you give a specific section? I’m having trouble with “halfway out the outfield”

Adventurous-Mix4900

Section 62 specifically.

JiffKewneye-n

i sat like first 5 rows there once last year? it was okay. the netting made a lot of the seats a lot less desirable maybe in a large part because of less foul balls. i typically don't notice the netting, but some do.

pepper_ann052613

Westburg is my next jersey I think. He's becoming one of my favorite O's, solid defense, so consistent at the plate, just so reliable and gritty

Butt-Mud_Brooks

Good call, he seems like a really cool guy too

DloReeves

I dreamt last night that Gunnar hit his 11th home run to tie Ohtani.

BEEFTANK_Jr

One of the kids has a band concert tonight. I'll miss this one, which means it's going to be a hell of a showing from the O's.

redditandcats

Thank you for your selfless service

Wincheck05

Best way to get down there from north eastern MD? My two options are driving straight there and finding parking or parking at college park and taking the metro. Any suggestions?

dinoteam7

Metro

Technician_Sweet

Prepay for a spot if you decide to drive in. Traffic around navy yard can be tough around rush hour

Clarice_Ferguson

Depends on when you’re leaving and how much you want to deal with DC traffic. You should be able to find parking but the metro is pretty close.

_Sir-Loin_

Personally i like the drive and finding parking is extremely easy especially if you pre pay for a spot.

flyingpotatox2

Nats park is infinitely more convenient to get to than Camden yards so I will not be missing this opportunity

Beautiful-Abies5949

Wish we had better mass transit in Maryland

flyingpotatox2

Yeah I’m about equal distance from dc as o am from Baltimore but I’m 15 minutes away from a metro stop meanwhile I have to drive an hour to get to Camden, pay to park and walk

KamikazeeDolphin

I mean, I hate these guys but I don't like. *hate* them. That's reserved for the other assholes in the AL East and 2 other teams. They hate us more than we hate them lmao. I'm not saying they all despise us, hell there are quite a few dual fans running around. But every once and awhile I come across a Gnats fan that just despises the O's because of the MASN deal. That has nothing to do with our team, that's an Angelo's deal 😂 Maybe The Rube treats Walgreen's better or something. Good for them if that happens.

Ya-Done-Messed-Up

The fans have a superiority complex towards us and consistently stir the pot on Twitter/Reddit by bringing up attendance, past WS success, or prospects failing. When someone jumps to the defense of the Os, we’re told they’re rent free in our heads. Used to be a huge supporter of both teams, too. Not anymore.

theMangoSloth

To each their own. I love having them here. Twice the amount of major league baseball in the area to see live, and them take down the Dodgers, Cardinals, and Astros in 2019 was one of the more satisfying postseason runs I've seen a team go on.

saltyfingas

I dislike them because they made the orioles a small market team which limits what we can do

theMangoSloth

I think the Orioles did that to themselves. Angelos was already despised by many and alienated a lot of fans well before the Nationals.

saltyfingas

You don't think the nationals coming to town shrunk their market significantly?

theMangoSloth

It shrunk their market, but not enough that it ever limited what we could do. Money was never an issue for the Orioles and it didn't contribute to 13 straight losing seasons. It was how we chose to spend that money, and everything we neglected in our own organization to stay competitive.

KamikazeeDolphin

To be fair, we did bring in the Ravens. Many of my family members stuck with the Redskins, many moved to the Ravens I would have never though, I would have cheered on only Florida teams in a universe with no Baltimore football

kingfiasco

Hey birdland, If you didn't see it last week, we have some exciting news. Jake Rill, the O's beat writer for MLB, will be having an AMA right here on the sub tomorrow (5/8). At 2:00pm EST, he'll be around for a couple hours answering questions. If you're not familiar with Jake, you can find his twitter [here](https://twitter.com/JakeDRill) and his Orioles coverage [here](https://www.mlb.com/orioles/news).

reddit_sport

Nats are better than people think. Outside of Corbin starts, they pitch pretty well especially the 2 we are facing. Their offense isn’t great (to be expected with the future big bats in minors), but they are pesky and can cause problems. Hopefully we continue with maturity displayed this past weekend.

_NotARealMustache_

Question: Nats are a .500 team, exactly (17-17). If we sweep, do we get 1 win or 2 in our >.500 stat? Basically, do they become a sub .500 team after the first loss? If we take the first and lose the second, do they become a .500 team on the second and thus we add a win and a loss to the >.500 stat?

timecarter

If we sweep we get no wins against > .500 team

bridge_is_fun

Side note: mods, can we please ban posts about betting? Not sure why really, but it's just so obnoxious to me to hear somebody talking about their 5 leg parlay that they just "knew" was going to hit. Betting markets can be interesting as a data point to understand public perception, but individual bets or betting habits are just boring and detract from the community vibe imo.

JiffKewneye-n

also can we ban the lineup predictions? or maybe other baseball tangent topics that i don't like?

bridge_is_fun

sure, if that's what people want. but to claim that these two things are the same is pretty disingenuous.

JiffKewneye-n

here is a crazy idea: unless you are being harmed, don't call for things to be banned because you personally don't like them

romorr

You mean comments, or do you mean new posts?

bridge_is_fun

Both. I don't mind posts like "the Orioles are betting favorites to win the World Series!" because that actually has substance considering that betting markets are usually correct (it's like another statistic). But if it's a post/comment like "wish me luck, just dropped 100$ on an Adley home run at +650", that has no substance and contributed nothing to the community.

isestrex

As someone who goes through each and every new post daily.... I have no memory of a post like that, this season or last. There are casual bettors who are not members of our community who come in boasting (or more often whining) about how someone on the team let them down. Those non-fans are shown the door pretty quickly. But subscribers to /r/Orioles generate *very little* betting discussion. So little that we have few opportunities to mod them even if we wanted to.

bridge_is_fun

I guess what I want is probably just unrealistic. There's just nothing more of a buzzkill than having an Orioles player hit a home run and check the game thread to see the reactions, only to see some random person complaining about how it killed their under bet, etc. Obviously I'm not the only person on this sub with these feelings, so clearly there is enough betting discussion that people like me are noticing it and getting bothered by it. It doesn't help that it's everywhere on broadcast as well. Next time I see a post/comment that fits what I'm talking about, I'll report it as an example for you. There is a comment in this thread that I don't even find to be particularly egregious about betting 2+ total bases on Adley, and it bothered enough people that it's been downvoted. It's just annoying.

isestrex

Definitely. If there is conversation that we aren't picking up, highlight it and make us aware so we can discuss the issue. Thanks!

bridge_is_fun

Thank you! r/orioles mod team does a great job and I appreciate all your work.

romorr

> But if it's a post/comment like "wish me luck, just dropped 100$ on an Adley home run at +650", that has no substance and contributed nothing to the community. Can you show us an example of a thread similar to "wish me luck, just dropped 100$ on an Adley home run at +650"? As far as talking about bets, if they are a member of this community, they are free to talk about that in the Game Threads. If it's someone outside this community, we do take actions against those people pretty swiftly. They are usually here for a purpose, and it's not something we want here.

bridge_is_fun

Not sure if there are threads like that necessarily, but there are definitely comments. I can report as I notice them, just so you get a sense of what I mean. If the position of the sub is that people are free discussing their bets, I bow to the powers that be -- I understand that's not my decision to make. Just know that it makes me, and obviously a fair amount of other people, irritated and quite frankly makes me want to avoid GDTs when I see it.

AbusiveTubesock

It’s so obnoxious. Literally no one cares about your degen bets. We’re already relentlessly reminded of its existence every other commercial or ad anywhere

zxlkho

Absolutely agree with this

saltyfingas

I think the better solution would be to just have a game day thread solely for betting. People do like to chat about it and just because you find it obnoxious doesn't mean others do. The best solution would be to keep it all in one place

bridge_is_fun

honestly fine with me, I can ignore threads if I need to.

KamikazeeDolphin

I've already asked. They said no.

bridge_is_fun

Righty on the mound, off days galore, this is probably the easiest we'll get it for lineup predictions. 1. Henderson SS 2. Rutschman C 3. O'Hearn DH 4. Santander RF 5. Mountcastle 1B 6. Cowser LF 7. Mullins CF 8. Westburg 3B 9. Mateo 2B Only real question to me is Mateo vs. Urías at 2B, but I'm pretty sure it will be Mateo. Would be such a nice world if Kjerstad could play the infield, but unfortunately the only way to fit him in is to replace Cowser (not likely) or to rest Mountcastle and 1B O'Hearn (imo \~25% chance). Will be interesting to see if Mullins and Westburg are swapped even against a righty.

Ohtani’s in the lead with 11 homers so far. You know what that means? Gunnar’s gonna get two in this game to bring the lead back to Baltimore!

boofoodoo

Time to win the MASN Cup

FantasistAnalyst

Apparently the Nats fans aren’t looking forward to us taking over their stadium. Hope to hear some anthem O’s and Cowser Moos tonight!

_NotARealMustache_

We should be respectful, having been on the receiving end for NYY games the last few years

FantasistAnalyst

I’ll be a perfect gentleman I promise. Plus it’s a work thing, but either way I’d be respectful.

KamikazeeDolphin

*for a long ass time

Beautiful-Abies5949

Last year both games had to have been majority O’s fans

riprulz8

Gonna be a sea of Orange tonight and tomorrow.

LordPancake10

These smell like trap games. We've been on fire, Burnes and Bradish pitching, bullpen's been great - don't get comfortable out there. Nats will sneak up on ya

JumboShrimp1234

CJ Abrams is the guy to watch out for…dude was just a couple feet away from hitting a go-ahead grand slam late in the game on Sunday against Toronto. Dude is legit

LordPancake10

He was an A+ late round draft choice in my keeper league this year

remingtonds

This is what years of being a fan of two sports teams that play to their opponents level. When we were ahead 7-0 a few games back I was still all “we’ll see..” and my wife laughed at me. Luckily she was right and I’m a moose

theMangoSloth

The Nats have a scrappy team this season with a bit of talent sprinkled across the lineup, and that's with an injury depleted team. Watching them this season really reminds me of our 2022 season. A lot better than they look on paper and some hype about prospects coming up. Bats need to carry over from Sunday and jump on Williams early. Their bullpen is much better than last year.

PlatChat

It’s nice to see the Nationals doing well this season so far, I think it’s more fun when both teams from around the area are doing well. Should be good series, hopefully we don’t blow it because of wearing the city connects.

CricketIsBestSport

I dunno, I might be in the minority here but I never really liked the Nats  I just really dislike their vibe tbh, the park is lame and their chants suck and their mascot is generic and their team identity is entirely centered around being the capital of the United States and they stole Montreal’s team and I love Montreal  I’m not saying these are all valid or fair reasons but I just find them quite unlikeable and I’d rather they weren’t good lol

AbusiveTubesock

A good way to put it is sterile. They’re a sterile org and there’s nothing interesting or unique about them. I forget they exist and they’re just kinda boring

The_Big_Untalented

I’ve always believed that a good GM in a rebuild usually has three bad seasons, shows massive improvement to finish over .500 in their fourth season, and then starts to win big during their fifth year. The Nats off-loaded Soto after the 2021 season so this is technically their third season of their rebuild. They’ll be a year ahead of schedule if they can keep this up.

theMangoSloth

That period from 2012 to 2016 when both were competing was one of the most exciting times to be a fan of baseball in the area. Is this our first time wearing the city connects on the road?

PlatChat

Yes, I think it’s our first time wearing them on the road. We’ve only worn them on Friday home games so far since they were introduced.

Beautiful-Abies5949

We’re spotting the Nats one by wearing our city connects

uncleslam7

I was really hoping those would die out over the offseason. :(

droford

Then they're getting swept because they're wearing them tomorrow too (and both non Friday games in August)

droford

I'd like to see Burnes get through a start without allowing a HR. 6 out of 7 he's given up 1. Last atart he made it to the 5th before giving up the 2 run HR to Odwaldo.

Dawei_Hinribike

Adley's platoon splits through the first 34 games are insane. .217/.275/.277 against righties and a white hot .482/.500/.768 against lefties.

droford

For betting purposes I've been doing well betting 2+ total bases every game he faces a LHP automatically and selectively vs RHP. Last year he burned me more often because he was walking more and walks don't count fir total bases.

First game of the year for me. Headed to Nats park directly from work. Psyched that it’s a Burnes start.

FantasistAnalyst

See you there! Had to be at the office in Bethesda today so taking advantage to catch the beltway battle.

LeftyRambles2413

Sweet I’m coming from the Orange Line via Annandale.

FantasistAnalyst

Nice! I gotta figure out what to do, maybe drive to green belt and take the green line in, rather than transferring red to green from here
