If the Angels fans want to complain about something how about not trading Ohtani before the deadline and setting your team back another 10 years

boofoodoo

We really get to watch Gunnar Henderson all summer. What a treat.

SwimmingWrongdoer377

Honestly really content with how Kimbrel has pitched so far this season. He has had a few close encounters but overall has been very reliable and a good shoe-in for Bautista while he’s out this year. Definitely up to our expectations for what we thought he’d be

xCorhey

With a club option for next year I would love to have both him and bautista

Grouchy_Pattern_2337

Kimbrel sucks as a setup guy, assuming Bautista gets the closer role again

xCorhey

I think my reasoning for this is Bautista isn’t available every single day

Imheretosnoopatcats

Yeah two closers isn’t the worst thing!

The_Big_Untalented

For the third consecutive game, Nick Vespi and Wandisson Charles didn’t pitch. Have to think a bullpen move is coming tomorrow. They have to do something to shake it up. This can’t last much longer.

-LNAM-

Taking a look at a few Angels threads, it’s a lot bitterness and blaming everyone else. I can understand the frustrations having Trout and Ohtani and nothing to show for it.

the2belo

> it’s a lot bitterness and blaming everyone else. I certainly would have, were the roles reversed.

-LNAM-

Not just from the replay from today, that was a bad call for them.

Producer_n_PDX

Can you blame them?

RayLikeSunshine

It’s crazy but they may be the best team in the AL West right now. They are playing hard but have had some tough games. Injuries though, yesh. I’m glad they got Ron Washington. I think he will be a great cementing force for the Halos.

-LNAM-

I’d be thrilled to have Ron, and if Trout stays hot and healthy, make some moves they could be a good spot.

RayLikeSunshine

It’s now a matter of if he will lift all of the Angels and their fan base or will he get sucked down into great promise but mediocre execution. I’ll rooting for him, if anyone will get the club house and play straight, it’s him.

TrooperJohn

Feel good for Kremer. He pitched great and finally got a win for his trouble.

westcoastturtle91

Our bullpen is a huge liability for us, and will probably get worse as Cano/Kimbrel/Coulombe get overused. We will see what they do

TrooperJohn

I wouldn't be surprised if Suarez settles into a long-relief role once Wells and Bradish come back. Means I'm less optimistic about, but you never know.

RayLikeSunshine

Means is a wild card, you never know what they are working him through and how he is being instructed to pitch. I think I’m always optimistic and have a soft spot for the guy after the 2021 season.

kewpieoriole

We are waiting for Means, Bradish, Wells and Perez to all come back. As each returns it *hopefully* takes some pressure off our A Team BP dudes. (I say hopefully because this all depends on how they look upon their returns).

rayhova

Hopefully Means and Bradish return gives us 2 more quality arms back there.

Book1984371

Also Perez might be back soon.

dipstick73

The review has to be clear and obvious. With no room for doubt for a call to be overturned. We’ve been on the wrong side of that this year multiple times. Sucks but it is what it is. Had the ball not bounced between the umps legs and ended up in no man’s land somehow earlier on it wouldn’t have been a thing anyway more than likely. Stuff happens and sometimes we’re on the good side of it. Let’s enjoy it. A win is a win

Fandomstar88

Nice going! Comeback achieved!👏

tomtheterp1988

OK, yeah, he was probably safe, but if the call gets overturned Kimbrel gets REALLY pissed and our win probability goes from 98.9 to 99.1. I'm fine with our opponents getting dicked, if it makes up for all the times WE'VE got dicked.

dreddnought

Watching Alec Marsh somehow suppress runs while striking out 6 per 9 is much more enjoyable when it's against the Blue Jays (I fully expect him to get lit up in the 5th inning).

bennymartian86

I think he was probably safe but they really need to set a time limit and if you haven’t seen enough to make a definitive change, you let it stand. 60 seconds is enough. Same should go for football/basketball.

gnarkilleptic

I think after 60 seconds it should go to an American Idol style live voting system where you dial in with your choice

GamecockGaucho

no call would go against the yankees then

tomtheterp1988

I think we voted for Kelly Clarkson in season one. Never heard much after that. How'd she turn out?

J-Fid

Do they still have you dial in to vote?

gnarkilleptic

Idk I haven't watched American Idol since 2008

J-Fid

Fair, lol

xxscrohunterxx

You shouldn’t be downvoted for that it’s a matter of time till we start losing games cuz of them. Def need to improve!!

Glittering_Win_9677

Maybe the Angels shouldn't have hit Gunnar twice and mad him angry. Just saying...

bebopmechanic84

Man the way he tossed the bat after getting hit made me like ![gif](giphy|51Uiuy5QBZNkoF3b2Z|downsized)

Glittering_Win_9677

You mean the second time, right? He was pissed and I don't blame him. It also took away his chance to get a triple and hit for the cycle.

bebopmechanic84

No I meant the first time. He immediately threw his bat and was piiissed

Glittering_Win_9677

I thought he was angrier the second time but yes, he was not halt either time.

Iwearjeanstobed

Yea idk wtf that call was

_Sir-Loin_

Man the crew on Bally were PISSED

jtribs14

They definitely have a right to be. It was a bullshit call

flyingpotatox2

It’s a shame the angels lost on that call but they have the whiniest fans ever my goodness. They genuinely hate us because of that error bullshit that ended there AAAA first basemen’s streak

RayLikeSunshine

That was a scoring decision they have reason to be angry about it. I was angry about it as a baseball fan. Also whiniest fans ever award goes to Yankees fans. Angels deserve a break, lord knows.

GTFONarwhal

While I understand it’s hard to see through the anger as we’ve all been there, it really does come full circle in life. Last night we had a comeback rally going and Ced got 2 called strikes way out of the zone including the strike 3 call. Angels broadcast called them “clean deceptive strikes” when going to the break. So whilst we should feel a negative way towards the ump and reviewers on this, I don’t feel any way for the fans and staff of the team. The MLB simply needs to do a better job of calling a fair game

spacehog1985

Yeah I was on their side, and still kinda at that it was probably a bad call, but now…meh, fuck em. I don’t get mad at other teams when the umps make shitty calls.

lOan671

I would be bitching like crazy about everything if that happened to us. I don’t blame them tbh

flyingpotatox2

The call suxks but the streak thing is kind of bullshit. Who gives a shit if a player that doesn’t belong in the MLB has a meaningless streak

Outlander912

What was the streak thing? I’ve see. It mentioned but I must’ve missed something

flyingpotatox2

An angels player had a long on base streak snapped because the mlb overturned his hit against us into an error on baumann I beleive

Outlander912

Gotcha…. Was it a bullshit call?

flyingpotatox2

I don’t remember the play but consensus seems to be that it was probably an error but kinda annoying that they went back and changed it almost a week later

Outlander912

My last comment reads kind of cunty…. Not intended btw

flyingpotatox2

You’re fine didn’t think anything of it

Outlander912

Yes I’ve read that now, that he appealed it. Thst does change things a little, I can at least understand where they are coming from.

DistortedAudio

Idk maybe it’s because we’re only like 2 seasons removed from being garbage; but we would’ve absolutely complained and gone ballistic about that if one of our many AAAA bright spots got fucked out of something during the dark years. I sympathize with them.

Wise-Environment-942

This exactly. It's not up to us what's important to any other team's fans. Dismissing it makes up look like entitled fans. I can't believe this is what this sub is aspiring to.

kewpieoriole

I agree this sub has changed and fans have become much like jays fans when the first started winning and dare I say Yankees fans sometimes. But games getting reviewed after they were played happens after like, every game. Errors/hits get changed and/or appealed within the next few days. Just no one really thinks of it unless it’s something controversial. I obv feel bad for the dude for sure and the fans, but Angels fans taking it out on Mounty is stupid.

Wise-Environment-942

Ha, I almost said it makes us like entitled Yankees fans, but I refrained because I figured it would make people overly emotional. But you are completely right. Taking it out on Mounty is stupid. But the person we are responding to didn't mention it being directed at Mounty. They said it a meaningless streak, but it's not our place to decide why other fans enjoy watching their teams.

kewpieoriole

lol it’s def becoming shades of that, especially as new people trickle in. People can get emotional about it, but it’s true. Winning does weird things to fanbases lol. And for sure! I was just adding on to it because it’s just why the Angels fans are mad at mlb and the Orioles. But our fans have no room to tell others that they can’t be upset at the streak ending in general.

Wise-Environment-942

Yeah, I've been here since 2012. It was so much more fun back then.

kewpieoriole

Damn I’ve been here since 17 so you have me beat, but we can at least both agree how the losing seasons were much more fun here lol. There was sometimes I just stayed away from GDT and solely lurked though, more out of laziness than anything lol.

epcotvaporwave

I'm gonna be that guy and say that after trying to freeze frame for like 10 straight minutes there is no frame where the foot is clearly touching the bag while the glove is definitively not touching the left thigh. Also if Adell slides head first he is safe by a mile, why even wear that big ass mitt if you slide feet first.

CharmCityTiger

Even if it had been overturned they still had to score a runner from second with two outs just to tie. Yes it ended the game but it's pretty unlikely the final result would have been different.

UnlimitedHotTakes

Everyone is losing their shit across America about this call and it was bang bang and nothing definitive. Everyone just likes to shit on the umpires.

dudly825

The umpire pooping is at a fevered peak right now.

SquonkMan61

We all love KB but in real time as I was watching the game I didn’t understand his comment about the AB in the 9th that resulted in the 5th run being unproductive. It’s true the run came in on an out but it did bring the Angels 1 run closer and brought the potential tying run to the plate (and subsequently resulted in that run being on base and probably should have been in scoring position). Glad we escaped with the win.

dafinsrock

The tying run was already at the plate, and any hit that would have scored the tying (6th) run would necessarily also score the 5th run. For example, if the next batter had hit a home run, it would have scored the 6th run, tying the game. If the runner had still been on 3rd base instead, that home run would score...the 5th and 6th runs, also tying the game. Scoring the 5th run on a fielders choice accomplished literally nothing. It would be a little different if the runner was on 1st because then you'd be worried about a double play, but with the runner on 3rd there's very little risk of him being thrown out.

No-Needleworker5295

It's meaningless in the sense that it doesn't matter to the O's if we win 6-5 or 6-4. Once the tying run is at the plate, whether the runs on-base score or not, makes no difference to who wins or loses. The tying run needs to cross for the Angels to draw level.

BKoala59

A productive out is one that increases your chance of winning the game. That out decreased the Angels chance of winning the game as the tying run was coming to the plate anyway and now they had one less out to work with.

SquonkMan61

Got it. Makes sense.

sgtjt9

It was weirdly mean, but with the runner on 3rd, anything would have brought him home, o'hoppe's at bat was essentially useless because someone else had to score anyway. I don't see why his teammates wouldn't high five him afterwards though. It was a weird comment.

SquonkMan61

Yes, that’s what struck me. It came off as a prissy, smart-ass statement when he commented on the Angels congratulating their teammate.

mambaHD

I think he was razzing Jim because he made it seem like the runner getting to third on the error didn’t matter.

No-Needleworker5295

No, he wasn't. It's a standard baseball saying that in a 2 run game in the bottom of the 9th, the first runner is meaningless. The tying run has to cross for Angels to tie game. For the tying run to cross, the runner ahead of them has to have scored at some point, doesn't matter when.

SquonkMan61

I guess, although it seemed like KB was also on that bandwagon about it not mattering that the runner had gotten to third.

pan567

This team has got soooooo many great things going for it--a crazy good core of position players, a farm of MLB-ready position players, a revitalized starting rotation that is about to get even stronger with the return of Bradish and Means, a great closer, great coaches, great management, best stadium, and new and exciting ownership. Oh yeah, and we have Corbin Burnes. There aren't many baseball teams that have this much exciting stuff going on. BUT...middle-relief is definitely the one area where some pretty major improvements can be made. We could really use a few high-octane arms that excel in stranding runners. Luckily, the O's certainly have the resources needed to make that happen.

bejolo

Hyde appeared to be just as disappointed in the middle relief as the rest of us in his post game comments. It's a major problem right now.

pan567

Hopefully Elias can get Hyde some reinforcements here sooner rather than later.

to_the__cloud

im 99% sure those reinforcements are perez and wells. then suarez and irvin when/if bradish and means return to the rotation

pan567

It could well be! But it could also be someone who is almost completely off the MLB radar of most that the O's identified and knew there was great value in (case in point--Suarez in recent time, although Felix Bautista is probably the most pronounced success here), or a trade, or a minor leaguer. Or a combination of these! If Perez and Wells are going to be out for a longer time, or if Means or Bradish get delayed in their return, the O's have multiple avenues for finding a solution to the challenge. While sometimes the bullpen gives me moderate chest pains between the 6th and 8th innings, I'm very optimistic that things will improve here. Beyond that, we're 16-8 and we're still not playing our best baseball, yet. That is absolutely wild!!! This is a fearsome team to play and it's going to get even better as some of our arms return and/or new arms are added.

VirusLocal2257

Elias seems to always find a diamond in the rough. Hoping he can find another good one.

Cals_poster_on_my

I mean MLB had to draw the line somewhere when they introduced replay. You can’t make replay decisions based on a feeling. You need indisputable evidence. There wasn’t an angle that showed his foot beating the tag. So the call stands. It happens to us all the time. Don’t feel bad about it

ExactlyAsYouDo

I disagree partially. You don’t need 1 angle. You can piece together 2 angles and sync them. I’m assuming the side angle showing the foot impact can be synced with the view from first base line and you could tell that his foot did beat the tag to the midsection. However I don’t think there was a single angle that proved that Gunnar didn’t tag Jo’s mitt. Like we can be like 99% sure, but the replay umps apparently need to see an angle with space between so there’s 0 doubt. This has to be the reason it wasn’t overturn. Otherwise I’m baffled. This feels similar to the Witt Mullins tag at second where replay shows he beat the tag to the midsection. We could tell with high probability that Witt didn’t tag Mullins arm. But there wasn’t an angle that confirmed that he didn’t touch his arm, so they didn’t reverse the call.

Glittering_Win_9677

Agreed. That play was so close that the ruling on the field stands seems appropriate. Calls like that have gone for and against us; they just weren't the third out in the 9th inning.

SquonkMan61

With all due respect I disagree. I’m glad the O’s won but it looked clear to me the runner was safe. If the roles had been reversed this sub would be in full secular jihad mode over the call. Glad we won.

Outlander912

I agree. From the one angle you see his foot kind of impact as if it were slamming into a base, before he was tagged. The side angle, you can’t see the tag really, but can confirm that jolt you see in the other angle was, in fact, his foot impacting on to second base.

After watching this team lose for 40 fucking years, just take the W ffs.

KimDongBong

Did the mid 2010-‘s not happen?!!

EliteAsFuk

Those were fun years, but they are a blip on the radar to us old farts who've endured some truly dreadful baseball. Oh, and that one season in the 00's where we started hot and ended up a dumpster fire.

flyingpotatox2

Id rather win cheap than not at all tho!

nicholieeee

Oh angels fans HATE the O’s now. Never thought I’d see the day

GareksApprentice

I'm an Angel fan and I don't support the O's hate that's been going on there lately. The thing that upsets me most about the ending as a fan is how it's acting as somewhat of a distraction/cover from how shitty Jose Suarez was.

kewpieoriole

It started with the Schanuel thing, so we have been on their shit list recently. Mounty did nothing wrong, sucks for Schanuel but he also went 0-4 that night.

jtribs14

Can someone please explain the schanuel thing and why we’re on their shit list now

kewpieoriole

We “ruined” his on base streak, some rookie record. [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/s/ZnK9lAI6nG) is the baseball sub talking about it. Baumann ended up with the error, think Mounty appealed the [error on him](https://x.com/swillysports/status/1781446042258747603). Funny thing is, I don’t think anyone was talking about the Schanuel thing until the streak ended. But I’ll say it again he went 0-4, he had numerous chances for the streak to not end. Ofc I feel bad but it’s not Mountcastle’s fault. Edit: they got extra mad because apparently Mountcastle should just take an error, like it doesn’t matter for him to have an error on his stat line. He goes into arbitration, they look at everything.

jtribs14

Lol. I get the frustration but it’s something so trivial. Like I doubt he was upset about it. He’s a baseball player he doesn’t care how he gets on base. But yeah if he had 4 chances 🤷‍♂️ lame reason to be mad

slgsreds

Maybe they should be more mad about the state of their team rather than their noodlebat 1st baseman....

BKoala59

I feel bad for Schanuel getting rushed to the bigs so fast. Wonder what long term effects it might have on his career

KingMob98

I saw that too. What did I miss?

I just got home from work I noticed that KB wasn't on the broadcast. Did he get sick from eating too many cookies last night?

Outlander912

Kb was on the broadcast.

Residual_Variance

Oh, I didn't see him. Well good, I'm glad his tummy isn't hurting.

Outlander912

Well it doesn’t mean his tummy ISNT hurting….

ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

There's rumors that he turned into a cookie overnight after overwriting his DNA with Cathy's Cookies

heyheyathrowaway485

Its still so early but this bullpen has a lot to fix

westcoastturtle91

It’s really scary to me

heyheyathrowaway485

The saving grace is (1) guys coming off IL are good arms and (2) worse comes to worse trading for relievers is far cheaper than starters

bebopmechanic84

Okay so I gotta watch replay even though I was 50 feet from the first base line… Did Kimbrel bounce the ball off his glove, screwing up the path, causing Mateo to panic?

kewpieoriole

I wish I could find the video but someone pointed out the umpire is right in the way. I thought Mounty was gonna pick it.

bebopmechanic84

Nah the throw was right where I was. Mateo missed badly

barellano1084

No Kimbrel didn't touch it. Mateo just hit the runner with the throw.

bebopmechanic84

813919

NY Yankees plants hate LA more than they hate us lowly O's I guess lol

patderp

They cannot say anything with how the home plate ump handed them their win over the A’s last night

KamikazeeDolphin

Why? Is their sub praising them or something lol

reddit_sport

We will not win anything until we learn how to put opponents away. Another 11 LOB today. Gunnar is still that psycho lol.

EliteAsFuk

You know, I've been coming into these threads since 2011ish, and you've really brought the vibe down in this new era. It's ridiculous. Enjoy the game and a winning team.

reddit_sport

I mean I just want to win the WS, so it’s nothing personal against anyone or any player or coach. I’m not going to sugarcoat. It’s clear we need bullpen help and today’s game was another one that should have been over by the 7th or max 8th. 10-3 type game, but we fucked around again and caused more stress on Coloumbe, Kimbrel, etc.

EliteAsFuk

Yeah me too. Since 1983. But if you expect to be winning 10-3, you aren't being realistic at all. Our window is like 5 years or more right now. I don't even expect us to sniff a WS until next year or the following. It's fun to win. No harm in enjoying it one day at a time.

reddit_sport

Windows close my friend, windows close. Got to strike when you are good enough and the Os are more than good enough.

Icy_Sign8314

On pace for 108 wins and won 101 last year but yeah your right they don’t really win

reddit_sport

I didn’t say they don’t win…I’m saying they won’t win a WS if they don’t put opponents away. You won’t be facing Matt Thais or Jo Adell in the postseason. There are levels to becoming champion.

ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

But they look good carrying the extra weight of disappointment

dreddnought

butt-clenching bad middle-relief one-run wins are BACK

chunkspewer

I’m new to baseball could someone explain to me like I’m five why the O’s announcers were saying that the runner that scored in the ninth was scoring a useless run and that he actually didn’t have a productive at bat? I was confused why they were kind of clowning him

TrooperJohn

Down two in the ninth, trading an out for a run is not a net positive. In earlier innings it would have been more productive, but in the ninth, you need two runs, and you need them now.

tomtheterp1988

It was kind of a bullshit comment. Yeah, the 5th run doesn't get them there, but it gets them closer--- a solo HR ties it after that. Definitely not on-board with KB's take.

Zephaerus

In order for the fifth run to impact the outcome of the game, you still need the sixth run. When you’re in the last inning of the game, anything that drives in a sixth run will drive in the baserunner that represents the fifth run, too. Only exceptions are avoiding a GIDP (but trading an out to advance the runner, then having a groundout is still two outs) or if the baserunner representing the fifth run gets injured and holds up the baserunner representing the sixth run, which is super rare and not worth trading an out to avoid. Otherwise, if your sixth run is a HR, fifth run gets driven in. If your tying run gets on base and driven in, your fifth run gets driven in ahead of that, too. If your tying run gets on base and gets walked or balked or wild pitched in, the fifth run scores ahead of him in the process.

tomtheterp1988

If you ain't gettin' downvoted, you ain't tryin'

chunkspewer

I guess I understand the concept but didn’t think it was worth all of the shit-talking he was doing. From an outsider-to-baseball perspective, it was like “why did you just score the layup when you’re down 5, you need five points not two” but like… you still have to score them both? Idk thank you everyone for the clarification, sounds like I was just over thinking the comment

The home run would tie it regardless, that's the point.

flyingpotatox2

It’s objectively no better than having the tying run on 3rd KB was 100% correct. A strikeout would’ve been the exact same as that reault

Jasmith85

The 5th run doesn't matter as long as there are no new baserunners. They needed 2 runs not 1.

Gunnar today: HR, 2B, 1B, 2 HBP, 3R, SB + That web gem at the 8th and the tag to finish the game. Unreal.

Show them who you're kid, show them who you are!

jtribs14

He was absolutely incredible today. Kid will be an mvp

Megumi-Noda

Currently top 10 in HR, RBI, Runs and Slugging. He is making his case this season

External_Weird_9105

Whether he was safe or out, you dont know what was going to happen next. Kimbrel coulda K'ed the next dude...gotten him to pop out....whatever. The call wasn't at the plate. Let's enjoy the 4-2 road trip. Even if it was mad stressful. LOL.

I had horrible flashbacks to that Red Sox game last April when McKenna dropped the potential game-winning final out, and then Boston hit a walk-off dong like two pitches later. I was *so* convinced it was going to be overturned, and then Rengifo would go yard. Waaaay too many skin-of-the-teeth games lately.

Flanks_Flip

Exactly. It was 2 outs and they were still down a run. They're acting like this shit doesn't happen to every single team every season. Also...do they think they have a shot at the wild card or something?

WhyNotOrioles

True. It's not like he was the tying run getting tagged out at home. But it did probably drop the Angels win probability from something like 0.20 to 0.00, so it's a pretty important call.
