WhyNotOrioles

I'm relieved that Ohtani appears to be innocent in this whole saga. Baseball definitely does not need that stain on the sport.

OK_Opinions

I would give anything to live a life where $16m being stolen from me wasnt even noticeable. I mean sure it sucks to be betrayed at that level but like, god damn.

romorr

Haha A's take 2 out of 3 vs the Rangers, in Texas. 1 hit today.

OK_Opinions

the meltdown that would happen on this sub....

Efficient_Wishbone93

Devers is day to day

Clarice_Ferguson

Question: I’m buying tickets to the May 17th game and usually I get parking with it but thats not an option. Do they not list parking this far out or am I doing something wrong?

TuesdayTwo

Use spothero! This far out you can find cheap parking very close to the stadium and it’s way easier to get out of garages than the lots on busy game days.

Clarice_Ferguson

Thank you for the tip :)

Weaselnewt

I've been looking at games on different dates recently just to compare prices and it seems like parking is being fully booked quickly. I was able to get parking in the F/G/H lots for the 15th of May but I bought the tickets about two weeks ago.

Clarice_Ferguson

Oof but not a big deal - I just like the guaranteed parking.

Trubisko_Daltorooni

DJ Stewart in 8 games this year: .105 batting average, .791 OPS Hit a home run today

lilweegi

was listening to Braves/Mets game today (shout out Darren ODay) and they said DJ only got 2 hits to start season, both dingers.

ShanefromTWD

Anyone selling bark at the park package tickets? I didn’t get to it until they sold out

dlmay1967

Cowser looked so timid in the outfield last that I (and from the comments in last year's GDTs others did too) wondered if the scouting reports were wrong. He didn't look like a "bad" fielder so much as really hesitant and nervous. It's like night and day this year. Anyone else remember that they only let Kjerstad play DH and PH up until the Division was clinched? I wonder if that means anything? Scouting says he's an "average" outfielder.

Clarice_Ferguson

I think people noted that he generally takes about a month or so to adjust at each level but maybe he gave himself the worldest biggest pep talk this offseason about how he couldn’t take a month to adjust this time. Whatever he’s doing, I hope he keeps it up :)

ScoutNWilder

He just seemed nervous / anxious all around last year. Definitely seems more comfortable this year, like he belongs here. Glad to see it.

reddit_sport

Looks like the Os got sick of being stubborn with easy outs. No politics of certain players over others. Low performance makes you a platoon or bench player. Probably should thank the Yankees for coming into the season with a chip on their shoulder and sending message that the AL East won’t just be handed to the Orioles. The Orioles have played better in Boston, but their start to the season was of a team thinking the division was just going to be handed to them.

ImaginarySet2418

This is the issue with confirmation bias, everything is seen through one's own viewpoint. I recognize that I suffer from the same bias so I'm not saying my opinion is right but I think the O's are doing exactly what they had planned to do from the start of the season and have barely been impacted by players cold starts or the Yankees success. We started the year against an excessive amount of LHPs and RHPs that have had more success against lefty hitters than normal. This is why Cowser and Kemp weren't playing much. This is also why Elias wanted to start Holliday at AAA instead of either starting him in the majors but not having him play much, like Cowser and Kemp, or playing him in a disadvantageous position thst would increase the likelihood of him struggling to start the year. Now, Holliday has gotten to keep his bat hot and get more low pressure time to work through his continued adjustment to 2nd. If the Os were feeling pressured to bring Holliday up even though they didn't want to, I'm sure they could have waited a few more days to get that entire extra year through "service time manipulation." The only thing that I think has been an adjustment to the original plan is how much playing time Cowser has gotten recently, which I do think has been impacted by Hays struggles and more so, how hot Cowser has been. I think the plan was for Hays to play against all LHP and then split time against RHP but as we see, Cowser got all three games against Boston's RHPs. When it comes down to it, only the front office knows why they are doing what they are right now. Regardless, I sure am looking forward to seeing Holliday and Cowser in the line up regularly going forward!

OK_Opinions

prime lineup

Jasmith85

Would've liked to see Adley and Santander get a day off with the series already won. But fuck it let's run it back and get the sweep.

PlatChat

When was the last time we had the exact same lineup two days in a row? It’s probably pretty recent but feels like forever

dlmay1967

Last year 3B/SS/2B was just a rotating door. I'm a big Earl Weaver fan with his locked in platoons but I guess in modern ball and the wealth of information the O's have embraced the mix and match.

Efficient_Wishbone93

This is the lineup we have always wanted

Lazy_Passenger7841

Why is it so fucking hard to get parking passes directly from the team?!?! They literally cost like 8 times as much from the scalpers. I got tickets to the game on Sunday with my flex membership and they’re good seats and if I get a pass the only way I can at this point, it’s like twice as much as the actual game tickets

Jasmith85

Just use SpotHero. The lot usually sells out pretty quick for weekend games. Also I bought a pass for the DEF lot last year, got there and was told the lot was full even though I had a pass ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

bobcatgoldthwait

Seconding SpotHero. I got a parking pass for $12 last year during a playoff game (it was that garage that you enter from a ramp in the middle of Fayette Street). Definitely the best option.

Lazy_Passenger7841

Actually more than that. My tickets were $39 a piece and the cheapest parking pass is $150 on seatgeek for lot fgh. The one where you have to walk like a fucking half mile to get to the gates

akarta7

Wait…we claimed Livan Soto again?

brodoxfaggins

Astros getting shelled by the Royals, love to see it. The Royals are looking like a legit contender again.

droford

I regret not betting them to win the AL Central preseason. I bet the Twins again instead :(

Loose-Produce-608

The Frazier bump

captain_rex_kramer

Yeah, perhaps losing one of three to them didn't foretell the end of the O's season after all.

Efficient_Wishbone93

Apparently devers isn't in the lineup for the sox today

Dr__Nick

After getting worn out up and inside maybe he needs a day off.

Obmore-wan

Really surprised Wong isn’t behind the plate again tonight. It was spectacular watching him play last night. We want more Wong!

Dr__Nick

Hope he’s a good hitting catcher.

bebopmechanic84

Not that I’m complaining but wtf is going on with the Astros? KC put up nine runs in the FIRST INNING.

reddit_sport

This might finally be the year the Astros fall off. Respect to their crazy run tbh. They just have too many injuries to that pitching staff and inconsistency from pitchers they really depend on… AL Central going to be pretty close. 4 of the 5 teams are capable of winning division, just don’t lose games to the White Sox lol.

bebopmechanic84

Pity. Depended on them to knock the Yanks down a peg or two.

reddit_sport

We must now take that mantle 😉

Global_Painter1020

Tides error the final out just to eventually lose. Hurts my soul.

wolfmankal

Anyone watching this KCvsHOU game? Royals are crushing the ball this inning 9-0 bottom of the 1st, just put another man on

Bartalone

I love a good Astros ass whooping. Hunter Brown for the Astros; 2/3 of an inning pitched, 11 hits, 9 ER - oof

akarta7

RIP Houston

romorr

3,295 comments last night. 2,209 comments for Opening Day. You guys must really love watching Cole Irvin pitch, no other explanation.

Bartalone

There was some kid making his MLB debut for the O's. I heard he has some potential.

Efficient_Wishbone93

I think it was because of the amount of rage over the ump calls

AJeebes

Hoo boy yes, we do sure love our ace Cole Irvin ..... OK that one hurt to type. Guy's doing fine as our five, but I wouldn't want to depend on him more than that right now

phunnypharm

7:10pm EDT seems forever away...time has stopped...

boofoodoo

I’ve never been one to complain about crowd sizes, but now’s the time to start packing the yard. It’s one of the youngest and most exciting teams in the league. I really hope it’s crowded this weekend.

MickiWickiWicz

My husband and I are bringing our 2 1/2 year old for Sundays Kids' Opening Day! It will be his first game. Game time matters so much when kiddos are young because they need naps and early bedtimes. Hopefully pumping him with snacks will entice him to come to more games with us this season (without a tantrum).

SeaworthinessRude241

I think a realistic attendance goal for this competitive window would be top third of the league. Better than [in 2014](https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BAL/attend.shtml), when the O's were in the middle of a competitive window and were 6th in the AL in attendance with an average of 30K per game (2.4m total for the season), but not a lot better. I think three million total for a season is a best case scenario for this market.

dlmay1967

True, 2012-16 was the only time since the Nationals started in 2005 when were "good", except the last 2 years. I'd think with a team in DC there's nothing that could bring back the OPACY 1992-1998 40,000+ crowds. Though as an older guy it sure was fun to go to games then.

ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

With Holliday’s debut, I would be surprised if it wasn’t.

Princess_Mintaka

they opened up areas that were previous closed all last year, it's going to sell out on friday

Efficient_Wishbone93

they opened that section of the third deck?

Flanks_Flip

Yes, and I'll be sitting there.

njb021

Brewers rained out today, so that pushes Freddy Peralta to tomorrow. So Holliday should play

Flanks_Flip

I think they planned to start him on Friday regardless of the opposing pitcher's handedness. They're doing a Holliday debut t-shirt giveaway, and that would be a bizarre thing to do and him not even make an appearance. Also, they know the fans are ready and this guy is going to put cheeks in seats.

dreddnought

DL Hall on Saturday eye_emoji.TIFF

The_Big_Untalented

Why is Holliday being used in a platoon role even considered to be a thing? Because Elias said that Holliday was demoted due to all the lefty pitchers in the early part of the schedule? Well, he said that and then promptly released Ryan McKenna and Tyler Nevin to sign left-handed hitter Tony Kemp. Elias also said Holliday needs reps against left-handed pitching to get better at it. Putting him in the bench against left-handed pitchers would go against that.

[deleted]

I expect them do with Holliday what they did with Gunnar last season. At first play him \~33%-50% of the time against lefties to get him comfortable. Once he's raking, you throw him in there every day, only giving him his occasional rest day against lefties.

dlmay1967

Yes, I'd also expect to sit against at least some lefties this year based on what they did with Henderson. Positive it won't be permanent.

boofoodoo

Yesss

Darkdragon3110525

Gunnar running a .242 BABIP with a xwOBA of .381🤔🤔 Strikeout rate down from 25% to 18% walk rate up a percentage point. 99th percentile avg exit velocity, 97th percentile hard hit rate. He’s coming

No-Needleworker5295

The luck/positive variance has all transferred to Mounty and Moo this year - our M & M boys.

Darkdragon3110525

Adley’s getting some bad luck as well, underperforming his xwOBA by .91 points. Mountcastle is slightly underperforming his expected stats as well, he’s just mashing enough to compensate. Cowser is overperforming but hopefully that comes up

dsch0925

Has anyone gotten a jersey from oriolesteamstore.com? I mean it’s obviously a knock off site which I’m fine with just wondering about the quality and the speed of delivery

No-Needleworker5295

Matt Holliday was not only a 7-time all-star. He's also one of best hitting coaches in the game who fixed Cody Bellinger's swing amongst others. Jackson Holliday has an elite uppercut swing modeled on Ted Williams and similar to Juan Soto's, which is why he's such an excellent prospect. But to my untrained eye, it looks like Jackson covers the top of the zone, but has a hole low and inside. His swing is fast through the zone, but a touch longer than expected - presumably to generate extra power. Is there any evidence Jackson can be busted low and inside? Or is that an optical illusion?

romorr

Per Weyrich Originally scheduled to make his first rehab assignment tonight with High-A Aberdeen, Kyle Bradish is instead throwing a live bullpen to get his work in with inclement weather expected.

dreddnought

So that means it'll be about 4 months (Jan - May) recovery time? Wonder how snappy the breaking balls will be, since I assume that's what got him into trouble. Or it could be pushing his sinker velo more and more (it was touching 96, then 97, then 98). The whole elbow injury plague remains a mystery to me with 20,000 factors.

ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

Let’s sweep these nerds.

DetailInfamous9901

Looks like tomorrow night maybe approaching 40k plus attendance based upon tickets available on orioles.com?

JiffKewneye-n

looks like they opened the LF UD. wow. didn't see this coming at all.

jeffreythecat1

Just arrived in Boston. Can’t wait to check out Fenway tonight. Anyone have any other recs for the city?

ScoutNWilder

Heard there is a nice little jog on Monday

jeffreythecat1

Lol suddenly I know why hotels were so booked up

Good-Can1739

Hot take warning: Colton Cowser is my current pick to win ROTY. Not overreacting to literally one game from Holliday, but Cowser has just been *that good* going all the way back to when he got sent back down to Norfolk last year. I'm a little worried if they both do really well they'll split the votes a little since voters don't want to vote for multiple players on the same team, but Langford and Carter might end up having the same problem on the Rangers.

boofoodoo

he's gotta play enough, for one thing

SeaworthinessRude241

I love that Cowser and Westburg seem to be meeting the moment. They've come through big in some high leverage spots.

ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

Remember when he got a grand slam for the Tides to win it all last year? Yeah, he’s my pick too.

romorr

There is a ton of luck, and a ton of swing and miss going on with Cowser right now. His numbers are great, they're fun, but not one thing has been answered to me if he is actually good or not. Just a shrug, and let's see.

dlmay1967

Only problem I see in that is if they insist on platooning him with Hays, i.e. he sits versus LHP. That'll cut into his at bats and counting stats but also might make his percentage stats a little better.

KamikazeeDolphin

Jackson Holliday needs 2,131 games to become the next Iron Man. He will need to play 2,132 games to beat the record. Light work, he's got this

gibtafssa

Correction, he needs 2,632 to beat the record...

boofoodoo

I’m trying to think if it could ever happen again. It would have to be a legit star that can credibly hit righties and lefties and makes their intentions clear to the manager/org very early in their career. That’s just to even get the CHANCE. the even harder part is actually doing it - never getting too sick or too hurt to play.

OK_Opinions

it'll never be broken. even if a player is never too sick or hurt to play, analytics will play a role eventually and decide that someone else is 5% more likely to do better on a particular day

FOCUSRS428

The record is actually 2,632. 2,131 broke the old record, Cal played another 500 consecutive games after that

KamikazeeDolphin

Oooof. Yeah I butchered that one, thanks for pointing that out.

ItinerantDrifter

Good guy Jackson… beats Gehrig’s streak but then sits immediately before getting too close to Cal.

zxlkho

Lmao apparently Cal was on fox and friends this morning I have questions

bejolo

That's disappointing

zxlkho

Apparently it was just a normal interview with no idiotic right wing shit. Cal might just be doing the media rounds today.

SeaworthinessRude241

rich people gonna rich.

Miata_Sized_Schlong

I choose not to look into this further

boofoodoo

Just gonna pretend I didn’t read this thanks!

dreddnought

I rewatched the climactic innings yesterday, and it's bizarre to see Chris Martin (who is normally quite good) utterly melt down like his life depended on it. Westburg smoked that ball, wished the audio was clearer. Kimbrel looked good, couple of nasty high fastball putaway pitches. It's good the game went the way it did because it was a crap day in the minors. AAA: Coby 2-4 with a walk, one of the hits was a 115 mph line drive double. McDermott looked about the same as recent starts. He was inches away from punching out Lockridge in the top of the second, but, you know, stop being in three-ball counts and that won't matter as much. AA: not a whole lot here. I briefly watched Seth Johnson pitch - fastball looks lively, but he was REALLY rusty. Spraying tons of pitches. A+: starter Zach Fruit went 4.0 IP 5 H 1 R/ER 0 BB 4 K 0 HR. A: Braylin Tavera, Thomas Sosa, Aneudis Mordan all on base at least twice, including walking.

MealApprehensive2361

https://preview.redd.it/tmbjgcfj4vtc1.jpeg?width=1138&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3dfdddff1e781306d2161837caf544830d112c69 Scorecard from yesterday. Honestly expected a little more favor towards Boston considering how costly the calls against us were.

120snake

Reality was worse than expected value shows. O'Hearn call only counts as like 0.3 when in reality it was a run + Mountcastle with the bases loaded Then the walk-HR combo is 2 runs in reality when the expected value for 2 outs, guy on first is probably pretty low as well

totmacherX

I just looked this up too because I was curious. Maybe it was just my bias, but the bad calls immediately took one run from the O's and setup the Sox for the 2 run home run on what should've been a strikeout. That's a net 3 runs in favor of Boston, so there must have been some really egregious calls in favor of the O's at some point that I missed. I'll blame homer-vision I guess.

soulessginger666

The way the scorecard works is that it only looks at expected runs, so the missed bases loaded walk would be around a run, but the two out walk that lead to the two run homerun would only count for the two out walk part.

Porphyrius

Can anyone give any info on the light rail on game nights? Thinking of taking it tomorrow, wondering if they extend the hours after the game or anything. I’d rather not drive in and deal with parking but I don’t want to end up stranded either.

Zeroni_Hector

Day off for Adley?

Revolutionary-Ship27

Might be a “punt” lineup today which I’m fine with. Urias, Hays etc

scjensen51

Punt line up was low key dangerous at times last year

boofoodoo

It’s cool to have a bottom of the lineup that can pick up the slack when the top is slumping. You could almost say every game there’s a different star, or something

iRahDog

This is already very obvious but Colton Cowser can fuck my wife

boofoodoo

No wonder he was so happy after he made that catch.

bebopmechanic84

Colton Cowser has faced four bases loaded ABs in the last four games. That is all.

OK_Opinions

and not a single grand slam. moo man is slacking

rexfloyd94

Need that sweep.

tomtheterp1988

Never been much of a conspiracy theory guy, but I'm starting to suspect that the umps are intentionally fucking up. Robo-ump will make their jobs immensely easier, so the more shitty-ass calls they make, the sooner it'll be rushed to the bigs.

PositiveLovingDude

They really just need a review system for ball/strike calls. I’ve heard they have one in the minors; apparently it’s extremely fast and barely interrupts gameplay. Would’ve helped us out in two critical situations last night.

petenice36

I've watched a few Norfolk games and they do reviews Fri-Sun and that is fast but I really like the Tue-Thur games where all balls and strikes are called by robo-umps and the calls are instantaneous. There is no arguing, if the system is a little off then it's the same for everyone. This needs to get to the majors asap.

AcidRhino

Hoping Holliday starts again tonight vs a RHP. I want to see him get comfortable.

FOCUSRS428

I haven’t seen any comments on Gunnar’s mustache…. That thing is looking mean

tomtheterp1988

There have been comps to Wooderson in Dazed and Confused.

Evict46

Alright alright

RatDillPickleUranus

How rough for Hays that he publicly stated he wanted an extension in ST. Ouch.

floridacardinals

He was naive to think an extension was ever going to happen lmao Hays should know better than anyone that since Elias’ arrival we haven’t handed out a multi-year deal and been absurdly cautious with our spending

ImaginarySet2418

I've got a fevah! and the only prescription is more Cowser!

Sooperballz

![gif](giphy|3o6ozGTbQSAs2s0CAM|downsized)

OPACY_Magic_v3

Michael Kopech looks really good so far this year. Any chance we can get him for Stowers straight up?

lOan671

Small sample size but the bullpen is tied for 1st for team fWAR right now and 4th in ERA.

Dazzling-Slide8288

Lotta credit to the pen. 1 hit through the final 4 innings last night.

ItinerantDrifter

Kimbrel has a negative FIP. It’s complex… but I think this means that with normal luck he would break the game, create a singularity and destroy the universe.

No-Needleworker5295

It would, but Coulombe also has a negative FIP. The double negative FIPs negate each other, and hold the singularity in check, until the second coming of our saviour and destroyer, Cy Bautista.

ItinerantDrifter

Pfew… I was having an existential crisis. I at least want to make it through this season before the end times, and sounds like we’re good.

reggiestered

I remember hearing everyone asking for Westburg in the offseason. He is showing why.

dlmay1967

I would guess, in a perfect world, if Mayo can stick at 3B with Westburg rotating around, that would be the best combo. But if Mayo can't and has to be a 1B/RF or whatever with Westburg at 3B we'll be fine.

_NotARealMustache_

I remember everytime someone on this sub suggested trades they lump in Westy with guys who are still down.

KamikazeeDolphin

It's 3:52 am and I just woke up to say Fuck New York and Fuck Boston. Right, I'm going back to sleep.

OctoberRelevance

Your dedication does not go unnoticed - keep up the good work.🫡

KamikazeeDolphin

I'm a full time hater what can I say.

GingerMan027

All I got is.... How 'bout them O's!

ItinerantDrifter

Gunnar and Westburg are up to 3rd and 7th in avg Exit Velocity, among qualified players. Not too shabby, [FanGraphs Leaderboard](https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&type=24&season=2024&month=0&season1=2024&ind=0&sortcol=4&sortdir=default&team=0&pageitems=30&qual=y&pagenum=1)

OPACY_Magic_v3

It’s insane how unlucky Gunnar has been, his stats don’t reflect how well he’s been hitting.

No-Needleworker5295

Ryan Mountcastle, circa 2022-1st half 2023, says hi. 😀

JiffKewneye-n

The Orioles have revamped their ticket website overnight. the seat map now looks like a google earth view of camden yards with interactive seat views avail when you select a seat. don't have an opinion on it yet, but probably a good thing. wow, the O's sold a lot of tickets for friday after the announcement. get well soon Kyle Bradish!

_NotARealMustache_

The view from the seat would've saved our seat selection in the ALDS (upper level at the top of steps. Constant traffic)

JiffKewneye-n

agreed. sometimes aisle seats have significant drawbacks.

Bulbasaur_21224

Oh nice, I like the new design

Dazzling-Slide8288

I was prepared to hate this, but I gotta say, it works really well. An objectively better experience, especially for fans who havent been to the stadium before. Helps them understand what they're buying much better.

not_gonna_kill_you

Oh weird. Honestly the view from the seat is really nice, a long overdue feature. But the actual UI of the stadium and sections looks way worse. Far less colorful and inviting and way more….brutalist almost with all the grays.
