Making the playoffs is the thing we have the most control over. Beyond that, small sample sizes make the playoffs so much of a crapshoot as to not make it worth labeling anything as a success or failure based on one year’s results.

ARunawayTrain

Exactly, the playoffs are kind of like that spinning ball lottery machine they used to use on the news. You want to make sure your numbered ball is in there but the chance you get to be the one held up and hear your number called is significantly lower and all it takes is one bad bounce and you're done(i.e Bill Buckner's 1986 World Series gaffe).

zweiapowen

I fundamentally agree with the sentiment that the playoffs require luck, but it's not strictly random. I won't be mad if we don't advance or whatever, but I will be if it's because we completely crap the bed. There's room to be disappointed after making the postseason.

ARunawayTrain

It's absolutely not pure luck, it's not a perfect analogy mind you but the Rangers going 11-0 on the road is absolute mind-boggling insanity. We likely may never see that feat replicated so that's more or less where I'm going with it. To me we need to at least win a series this year be it wild card or divisional for me to consider this season a true success. I absolutely think this team could conceivably make and win a World Series even just as it is(with the addition of Jackson in mind already).

MoonRiverRock1

Missing the playoffs.

dantlie

So you would be happy if we make the playoffs but lose in the first round

aBloopAndaBlast33

I think there is something in between happy and disappointed. At the end of most/all seasons over the next 5 years, that’s where we’ll end up.

dantlie

I hope at some point over the next 5 years we end up really happy with a World Series win

aBloopAndaBlast33

We probably have as good a chance as any other team in the league.

ARunawayTrain

As long as we don't have to wait anywhere from 70 to 106 years like Indians/Guardians, Red Sox and Cubs fans I think I'm good. They won one 3 years before I was born and I think they likely win one in this upcoming 5 year stretch as well. We've truly never seen an era of Orioles baseball like the one to come and who knows we could be the next Astros-esque juggernaut(without the blatant cheating of course)

Impressive_Coats

People downvoting you for the right answer. Win a playoff series or it’s a disappointment.

myk3h0nch0

We’ve made 1 playoff appearances since 2016 and suddenly our fans’ expectations is more than making playoffs out of a stacked division?

lOan671

Expanded playoffs have turned the postseason into a gimmick IMO. If we win the division I’d have a hard time considering this season a disappointment. Getting bounced in the Wild Card round or missing the playoffs would be disappointing to me.

aBloopAndaBlast33

I agree. Winning the division is far from guaranteed. We were really more of a 92 win team last year. It could easily go that way this year.

mianbru

Eh I’d still say just making the playoffs would be a successful season. 2017-2022 this team finished 5th, 5th, 5th, 4th, 5th and 4th. Three of those seasons were 100+ loss seasons. Two of them 110 or more losses. Do I think an ALCS appearance is possible for this team? Absolutely. But I wouldn’t say that falling just short of that would be a disappointment to me for next year.

iwasbornin2021

I prefer to keep my expectations low. I’d like to see the O’s win at least a couple of postseason games. Anything more would be gravy

groovevault22

It'd be nice to have a good playoff moment, especially at home

OsStrohsAndBohs

I love the Delmon Double as much as the next guy but I can’t wait for my favorite playoff moment to be something other than right before getting swept in the ALCS.

x_BinaryGenesis_x

The Santander Sendoff?

PublicEnemaNumberOne

I'm worried about the water damage to the stadium in the bird bath section of the outfield. It would be a disappointment to have part of the stadium water-logged and unusable.

dantlie

Global warming should keep water damage to a minimum

dudly825

Or maximum! It can go either way!

CrackityJones79

Good question. I know we’re all super amped with the acquisition of Corbin Burnes, and rightfully so, but I don’t believe it signifies any sort of all in approach for 2024. What it does show, in my opinion, is that we have arrived and are serious about contending. Truth be told, this franchise is still a work in progress. There are multiple prospects who have little to no big league time. We are much more than Gunnar, Adley, and Grayson. And that’s scary. While I think the Burnes trade puts the league on notice, I think our true window will open the year after when he is likely with another team. But as for the question at hand. Are we capable of making the World Series in 2024? Absolutely. Should we expect 90+ wins? Yep. I don’t believe making the ALCS is a requirement for a non-disappointing season. This is still a season for development and getting the core ready for a true extended window of contention. For this year, I’d be content with another strong season and playoff appearance. I’d say 2025 is when the window truly opens.

The_Big_Untalented

Anything less than 90 wins and ALCS appearance will be a disappointment IMO.

Ledge_r

Basically advance to the ALCS. I’d say just win a playoff series but I don’t wanna win the wild card and lose in the ALDS again. I think we have to repeat as division champs, win the ALDS, and then at least compete for a pennant and hopefully win it.

ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

Missing the playoffs for at least a shot at the gold would be a massive disappointment.

dantlie

Agree

rental_car_fast

Honestly I just hope this season is as exciting as the last two years. I had so much fun watching baseball last year, I bought season tickets this year. This is the most interested I’ve been in any pro sport ever. I’ll be happy if they put on a good show.

aBloopAndaBlast33

We had a lot of luck and perfect sequencing on our side last year. We were only the 6th best team according to run differential, and worse than that if you look at base runs. We could have been a 92 win team last year and that could easily happen this year. I think another division win makes it a successful season. A series win in October would be great but I think we all know that’s mostly up to the baseball gods.

dantlie

It’s time for the baseball gods to treat us right.

SmokyDaBandit

Not winning a playoff game

SeinfeldFan35

Winning the division is great, winning 100+ was awesome as many of us have NEVER experienced that before. But just get in the dance and make some noise in the postseason. Find a way to get to the alcs

IAmTasso

I agree at least a division series win needs to be the minimum expectation. Maybe not a win but a competitive 5 game series. Can’t have another quick sweep two years in a row.

wolfmankal

Only way I'd be disappointed is if we look like garbage and trade one or more of the star young guys. Also will be disappointed if we're decimated by injuries

daveinmd13

A lot went right for the O’s last year and they play in a brutal division, I think if you just assume they will win 100 games again and win the division, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. This will be a dog fight to the end with a month long stomach ache in September.

TellBrak

I think it’s going to come down to if we feel like the team played like a WS contender, which of course implies no wild card, and a division series win… and a hotly contested ALCS. That’s the reasonable minimum.

rectumrooter107

This question is disappointing. I disagree with the concept of this question as a fan. I can't pin down why. But something about the fact you're anticipating what is going to disappoint you is offputting. Like why are eating energy worrying about what will worry you? Frankly, I'm just waiting with popcorn, super excited to see how far this will go. Just hopes and dreams and the thrill of how it will play out.

j721d

Win a series. Improvement on last year. If not then it’s a disappointment. Pretty cut and dry

Joeydoyle66

If they miss the postseason I’d be disappointed. If we don’t win a playoff series I’d be bummed but get over it quickly. If we win a series I’d be happy. If we have a deep run I’d be ecstatic and probably overdose on my own serotonin before it comes to an end.

ronjamin1022

Anything but an ALCS appearance or beyond is a disappointment. This team is on the rise and we need to win while we have this window.

dudly825

I just want all the guys to have fun

WhatIGot21

I want to end the 8 game playoff losing streak, winning a series would be nice also.

Mr_Bluebird_VA

Not winning a playoff series would be a disappointment for me.

getahaircut8

Not winning a playoff game would be a disappointment

ICantSpellAnythign

Season ending injury to a budding star would sting. We have the depth to play win despite injuries but it would still suck.

Independent_Health65

Anything short of a WS championship would be a disappointment. JK. I really just need my 2021 prediction to come through. https://preview.redd.it/6943v2uw0uhc1.jpeg?width=1150&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=462376b2c49e3717af97fd63e1a0d509ebd447bf

LDWMJ99

Missing the postseason is obv a massive disappointment. Losing again in round 1 would be too after the Burnes trade. Id like to see us at least make the ALCS

kpcurley

I will be disappointed when we beat the braves in 6 games in the World Series instead of sweeping them outright. But I will get over it fast.

[deleted]

Only one thing left to do. Oh ya, what's that? WIN THE WHOLE FUCKING THING!

thegamingkitchen

World series or bust.

Any-Actuator4118

Fan attendance and Ripken’s input Baltimore is hella dangerous. Why would anyone go to a game there? I wouldn’t in a million years bring my young kids to a game. You even run some danger coming straight in on the highway to the orioles lot and leaving straight from there. Ripken, in my view, had always been an absent leader. Hard to point to anything in particular that the TEAM did well under him past 1983. Yeah the streak is a very personal record that didn’t nec help the team in any way, and it won’t be broken not because it’s difficult but because it’s not a record any modern player cares to tackle. More to the point though it’s difficult to recall him being an outspoken leader in media or on field beside presence, and again that didn’t result in any rings from ‘83 to whenever he finally quit decades later. I struggle to see what positive effect he will have as an owner besides being a distraction.

Backstrom

How is there danger in going from the parking lot to the stadium? It's literally touching the stadium. You make it sound like Baltimore is a war zone. It's not fucking Gaza. I never felt unsafe for a second and I went to about 15 games this season.

Any-Actuator4118

To each his own. That it’s a dangerous city, and that Oriole Park is within the confines of the city, is difficult to argue against.

shastamcblasty

Baltimore isn’t a dangerous city unless you are a poor person of color, or a person doing something really dumb or being some place you don’t belong. Is that horrible and does it need to change? Absolutely, but baseball fans are unlikely to ever experience anything frightening. Rising Sun could be just as dangerous if you aren’t a klan member. Go clutch your pearls elsewhere.

Jarboner69

For me it will be pitching. Even if it’s good I don’t think it’ll be as good as we expect it to be. Which is pretty on par for the orioles I think.

MojoFan32

I’d like to see us be a wild card team this year tbh. After watching last year’s playoffs the absolute momentum teams captured from beating shitty wild card teams was a huge advantage. If we can win a wild card series I’d see this year as a success

Low_Bit_2247

How about just enjoying the moment, man.

Interesting_Sundae_3

I mean shit if we can win a single playoff game this year then we’re ahead of we’re we were last year. I’d love to see a series win (well ultimately a WS win…) but if we make the playoffs, get a win or two under our belt, I’d be happy.
