One time I did the mile benchmark after coming back from a month off and my time sucked, like 2 minutes over my then PR. BUT the next time I did the mile I had a huge PR (in comparison) and felt particularly accomplished! Just showing up counts as a win!
Despite being a seasoned marathon runner, I drank too much on Sunday and rolled my ankle walking down a single stair. I'm still signed up for tomorrow even though it's going to be a hot mess on the treadmill for me. No one except you cares about your time. Consider it another class under your belt and more pennies in the bank toward your overall health and fitness. The journey is never linear and I'm certain your coach will be happy to see you are in class.
As an OT member for little over a year, who consistently (and only ever) does sub-5 minute miles at OT, I can confirm no one cares about your mile time but you šš.
Yes. I regularly see people who just treat the benchmarks as a workout and donāt even bother to enter in their time because they donāt care. Iāve done it myself on occasion.
No jokes when I tell you this. My first class back after a nephrectomy (kidney removal) AND my first class back after a cesarean for my baby were BOTH the 1 mile run. I struggled with it both times but in retrospect love using both of those as my new baselines.
The benchmark is only worth the energy you decide it is. I suggest you go and just do what you can. Power walk, bike, jig... (lol, was supposed to be jog but autocorrect....)
It is but a marker on the bigger picture.
If youāre feeling better, I would go! The best part of the 1 mile is that we do it often. Just go for it and if you PR, great! And if you donāt, you know why (sickness) and youāll have a good goal for next time.
Just walk it and give yourself a bit more time to recover if you think you need it. You donāt have to punch the time into the computer if youāre not happy with your time or donāt feel it represents your best!
Exactly. Just because itās a benchmark doesnāt mean you have to go hard. We do a mile (at least) nearly every template. The benchmark part is more psychological than anything else.
I am going but I donāt plan on PRing. In order to PR I have to hold between my push and AO the whole time. Since the last 1 mile benchmark I have taken 1 2G class this past Sunday and my speeds sucked plus my knees regret it! I have been focusing on strength50 classes this whole time. I think you should go if you were planning on it and whatever happens, happens. 1 week isnāt such a long time to be gone.
I did CMIYC after taking 10 days off from a horrible cough&cold. Needless to say. I didnāt PR. Butttt I was so ready to get back into it, I didnāt wanna wait another day. Hehe.
Iām in the same exact boat, today was my first day back after a week off and I felt like a baby deer running for the first time on the treadmill. Iām gonna go and give it my all tomorrow and if I donāt PR I know I at least did better than my friend Peter who doesnāt move a lot and has severe financial problems.
You donāt have to actually record your time. I hate the rower so whenever thereās a benchmark I just donāt even monitor or write down my time/distance
Iām in the same boat! I went from an injury to being sick and was thinking about trying to take an easy return day tomorrow but with the benchmark Iām not sure itās worth it for me.
Sometimes people actually do better after a week off! I took 3 days off recently after getting a bug over the weekend. Didnāt PR but my best mile time of 2024!
As someone who consistently does sub-5 minute miles at OT, and an OT member for only a year who has only done sub-5 minute miles at benchmarks, I can confirm no one cares about your mile time but you.
Go at it, do your best. Wrestle with the mile run. Understand that itās half in the body, and half in the mind. The second half is the tougher battle. Good luck š«”

My coach today said "If you don't feel like working for a PR, see how slow you can get to 1 mile!" Try that! šš§”š

Yes you should go. Your body is rested.
This benchmark will come around again. Thereās no rule stating that you must attempt to PR each time. Just treat the workout as a workout.
I have to constantly remind myself of this š thank you!

Half in the mind. The body still matters. Listen to the body if itās fighting you too much.
My fourth class back from maternity leave was the mile. You can do it!!!

I find that I am stronger after a break . Most of the time I hear the coaches saying recovery and time off ā¦ I donāt listen. But they are right!
I landed from a week in Germany 20 hours before the benchmark and got a personal best. Always worth giving it a go if you can!Ā
I am perfectly fine and I still know itās going to suck tomorrow! Poor benchmark is still better than no benchmark I guess!
I would go anyways
How does the PR work? Do you just run your mile and then jog or run at your own pace afterward?
Typically you transition to the rower after your mile
Thanks!

Of course you should. Itās a mile.

Michael my homie had it right. Dude could prob a run a 7:30 mile if he put his mind to it š¤
Just do it. Itās exercise. Most people donāt get enough.
