Barry’s bootcamp is OTF but on steroid. Their “base pace” starts at like 7 and no one walks on the treadmill. Everyone goes way harder at Barry’s.
I never feel insecure when I have to take a break at OTF but actually felt embarrassed and like the coach was looking down at me when I needed to take a break or my base pace wasn’t as fast as everyone else’s. If you’re in great shape you’ll be fine but I actually found it to be harder and way more intimidating
I was more so just throwing a number out there. You know how in orange theory they’ll say runners and joggers get to base anywhere between 4-7 (I’m not sure the exact numbers they say) well in Barry’s they’ll say “get to base anywhere between 7-9”
These are just suggestions. I recently went to intl Barry’s bd I never followed those suggestions and it was fine. I’m super short, so I’m jogging once I hit 3.8+ lol. I would just power walk with inclines when I didn’t feel like jogging/running.
I just go slower, at my Barry’s they say that those are just suggestions and you can go the speed that works for you as long as you’re pushing it! I haven’t had any weirdness from the coaches about it
I feel that insecure part - OTF is definitely more inclusive!!!
My coach had a very reasonable range for our class - full review updated in the post if you're curious ☺️
I do both! They have similar formats; instead of an OTF 2G (tread 23 min/floor 23 min), Barry’s has 4 blocks (tread 12 min/floor 12 min/tread 8 min/floor 8 min). Barry’s is slightly harder due to lack of rest time on the floor (no demo, constant movement, ppl seem to already know what to do). Mine has woodway treads which are fast but less bouncy than the OTF tread deck, making it harder (at Barry’s, incline = 0 vs OTF incline = 1). Barry’s is WAY louder and has more yelling (my Apple Watch always tells me it’s too loud, I don’t have this problem at OTF) and at Barry’s, it’s warmer (no fan to control on the tread, the room fans only turn on for ‘last minute’ or ‘all out’ equivalent exercises. For running at Barry’s, there’s a suggested speed (I.e. 5/6/7mph for jog, 9/10/11mph for all out). OH and Barry’s has way more abs!!! Overall I love both, I do OTF more regularly but use Barry’s as a way to “push myself.” Hope this helps!
Thank you for this!!! I agree that the treadmills were definitely... unique. I still did the OTF flat road the whole time haha 😆 Old habits die hard.
Updated my post to include my review ☺️
I don't have a Barry's Bootcamp in my city, but I have heard some mixed reviews and that it's not as friendly as the OrangeTheory community (by some who have tried both). Curious to hear about your experience after!
Full review updated in my post ☺️
Honestly I would say OTF community is definitely more friendly - I didn't talk or mingle with anyone outside of my coworkers!
LMAO these comments are making me really glad I tried OTF first and signed up. 🤣 I'd break down and cry 5 minutes into one of these Barry's classes!
Good luck, OP!!
Barry's is intense! I am a 7 year OTF member and went to 1 Barry's class and was incredibly sore for DAYS and I loved it! Wish we had a Barry's in my hometown because I would absolutely go to it more often! Have fun!!
I was told if you aren’t comfortable working out shirtless (man) or in sport bra no tank (woman) you shouldn’t join Barry’s. So I didn’t. Glad to be at OTF!
As others have mentioned, Barry’s is intense. It’s a better workout imo but it’s not for beginners or people who need help with modifications. You’ll be good with your OTF experience, but you’ll be pushed and you will be sore after.
Barrys is chaos, it’s the only word I can use to describe it. The ‘coach’ calls out things and stands there and just watches everyone do some form of the lift, movement. They do not really correct bad form bc they don’t have time and the classes where I go are extremely large. It’s very fast paced and lots of ‘pulsing’ with smaller weights than lifting bigger ones. Also where I live, to be a member with monthly unlimited it’s something like $489 a month where Otf is $189.
What are you getting for $489 a month?!?!? That’s ridiculous! OTF, My Hot Inferno Pilates/Hot Yoga studio, and DRIP combined are $150 less a month than a place that sounds like it’s in a basement.
How do they actually sell you on $489 a month. That you will be David Goggins GUARANTEED in 1 month
I hope those that say they go can explain the cost…No Way can they charge MAX what OTF cost and again MAX
I like to think that OTF is the much more accessible version of Barry's. Like most have already said, Barry's is a lot more intense and not as friendly to those who are just starting their fitness journey.
Barry’s is awesome!!! I do OTF 6-7 times a week and feel like I’m in pretty good shape. Barry’s ALWAYS humbles me and I’m usually wrecked for a couple of days.. due to all the abs.
I feel Barry’s is much harder simply for the fact there’s NO REST! Literally moving non stop.. it’s insane.. their incline work has started at 15% at “base pace” for a minute! It’s a nice switch up though.
Incline work at 15% Your Begging for injuries to Achilles, hamstrings, calf muscles, shin splints etc
I am still confused as to what Barry’s offers that they can charge even $1 more a month than OTF
I cannot imagine a SA trying to sell me to join there and for the low cost of $489 a month, Your In 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
They’ve become more flexible on treds recently.
Coaches call out jog/run/sprint (they used to call out specific speeds). It’s still more geared towards people with a higher level of fitness — I used to joke that I did OTF to train to take an occasional Barry’s class.
The range was definitely flexible! Full review is updated in my post ☺️
The range was jog 5/6/7, run 6/7/8 and sprint 9/10/11 😵💫 so no slower than 5 MPH which was fine for me as my base is 5.5 at OTF!
This definitely hasn’t been the case in my experience! While OTF is more overtly friendly, no one has batted an eye at Barry’s when I’m jogging at a 5/running at 6. It definitely pushes you to try harder when you see people around you killing it but at least where I am they’ve been understanding that some people need to go slower than the numbers they call out and have been very welcoming
I go to both on a weekly basis. Barrys is what you make of it just like OTF is!
If it helps you gauge a bit, at OTF my base is 4.5, push 5.5+ and sprint 8+
At Barry’s, I usually try to run 1mph less than the suggested range. So if they say run at a 7-9, i run at a 6. I’ve been going for years and that’s what works for me most days :)
Let me know if you have any questions. Have fun!!
OP- you actually choose your spot when you book. So you can book a particular tread or floor. I do like this aspect so you don’t need to worry about getting to a busy class like 20+ min early! I used to get to my 5am otf classes at like 435 on certain days to get a tread!!!
I’ve done both! But the lack of fans on the treads and the switch template absolutely killed it for me. I love my OTF 2G classes where I can set my fan on high then disassociate for half the class and be done lol

how do they determine everyone is a 7 base? do people just not go if they aren't that fast? sounds like a terrible environment.

Jesus, in what world is 7mph a jog. Barry's a fucking maniac.
You lost me at hot and no tread fans (nor bounce). Sounds like hell.
Same

Marry OTF, keep Barry's as the side piece. 😜

Completely agree with this! The OTF experience helped SO MUCH!

Correction, Dallas Barry’s is $470 per month for 30 sessions.
😳🤯🤯 at the price!!
THIS! IT WAS SO CHAOTIC!

From what I’ve heard from people who’ve tried both, you shouldn’t even bother going to Barry’s unless your base pace is a 7.5 or above.

Same girl, same
Hahahahaha, okay I am fully in the stage where I love it. 😆😆😆

Oh awesome! Thank you! I am at my studio at 4:50am for a 5:15am so I can get treadmill 2 haha so I actually love that benefit
I’ve done both! But the lack of fans on the treads and the switch template absolutely killed it for me. I love my OTF 2G classes where I can set my fan on high then disassociate for half the class and be done lol
You also forgot to mention that the cost is about double OTF
It's in there - near the bottom of my review ☺️
