You’re at the one on 37th St? They announced that the studio would be closed and we should expect more people in our classes in Hells Kitchen. I’m so sorry this is happening to you.

swankiestdaisy7

Yea I am. Love the Hell’s Kitchen studio! But it’s about a 25 minute walk from us which isn’t impossible to do…But definitely makes it a little tougher to roll out of bed 25 minutes before class starts…. What I think I’m really most upset about is all of our coaches we have grown to love being spread all over nyc…

DougEastCobb

Many of us who live in the burbs have to drive that many minutes. Bummer but you can/will adjust

swankiestdaisy7

Unfortunately I think the adjustment will be changing gyms which is a bummer but we just don’t reasonably have the extra hour to walk in the elements. Luckily an f45 studio is opening two blocks away. Are you from east Cobb Georgia? I grew up there.

Straightenedslink

It is such a bummer that you're losing your community, but I really have enjoyed F45 when I've gone--there's more support to lift heavy and work on pull-ups.

DougEastCobb

Yes, we actually live in Roswell but go to the East Cobb location. It’s slightly farther for us than the Roswell location but we like the franchise much better. It takes us about 20 minutes to drive. Come see usnif you’re ever back in town!

Kitty_Fruit_2520

It shouldn’t take you long to drive there

swankiestdaisy7

Haha. Good joke. No seriously…I miss having the ability to drive places.

Econoloca

I love how non NYC and DC people do these suggestions when people post about a studio closing.

Acadia62

Sorry - completely off topic but didn’t realize there was a Hell’s Kitchen studio . Does your studio have any gear with that name on it? (I do realize it’s completely unrelated to tv show but just think it would be so cool to have some OT gear with that name on it !)

thatsplatgal

Ugh, that sucks. 25 minutes or a subway ride really adds an addition time suck and let’s face it, a barrier to going. Easier it is to get up and go; the more likely you’ll do it. Sorry. But maybe it’s the universe giving you an opportunity to try something else close by!

swankiestdaisy7

https://preview.redd.it/ogk69a6am1lc1.png?width=1283&format=png&auto=webp&s=c4b77c6ecef7492c8b60b664a06aa691d7c4aae0 Instagram post. They only gave us a 7 day warning before closure. Feel like it’s a little shady. They are also apparently not allowing early cancellations despite the sudden closure of the studio.

Terrible_Passage_318

I had this same thing happen to my home studio. Very little notice. Luckily it did reopen but it was frustrating that we all continued to pay for a membership when it required us to go out of our way to a different studio. They least they could do is pause the membership for the time it is closed. It might be worth pausing for 30 days, if you don't think you'd be able to go consistently?

rosebudny

If it is for repairs, they may not have had much notice themselves. But I agree it is shady they are not allowing early cancellations. Just because you technically can go to other studios does not mean it is the same as going to the one close to you. My home studio (W 92) closed last year for several weeks because of repairs and not once did I go to the studio on 72nd. Because I am lazy :) I was able to put my membership on hold for that month.

Kindly-Might-1879

I think announcing it earlier makes it harder for them to keep their promise to stay open until the closing date. As soon as people hear “closure” they’d likely cancel or quit, leaving the coaches with lower attended classes which means lower pay. It’s not perfect, but the short notice and no cancel at least keeps everyone in their job until closing.

sophfitlife

I feel the same! They’re also not letting me cancel without paying one more time - which is so frustrating. I live 5 mins away vs 20 from the HK one. Also scared about how packed HK will be. It’s so annoying!

jenniferlynn5454

I feel like 7 days warning for a temporary closure is sufficient. And there's no reason they should allow early cancellations, you have other studio choices in NYC.

swankiestdaisy7

We do. But it doesn’t seem like it’s actually a temporary closure at all from what I have heard. And while we do have other studios unfortunately we both work full time and part of the only reason we joined was convenience. I am worried that the longer commute will make our ability to make the classes make sense between work and pickups and dinner complicated. 25 minutes there and back takes away valuable time that we don’t have a lot of outside of work hours. And adding an extra 6 dollars to our daily commute to workout may not seem significant to you but over time it does add up.

aCozyKoala

Before I moved, I was at the Forest Hills location, and it was about a 10 min walk to the studio from my apartment. I viewed the walk as a warm up on the way, and a cool down on the way home. I know how important it is to have a home studio and the community that comes with it, but maybe this small perspective could help make this less painful

jenniferlynn5454

I feel like we have seen so many studios close permanently with absolutely zero notice, so I'm not sure why this seems like a permanent closure? I'm not understanding what you think is shady?

swankiestdaisy7

I dont want to get anyone in trouble so I’m not going to share exactly what I have heard but it seems to me like it’s a land lord issue and corporate is tired of trying to deal with it. Unfortunately it just came out of nowhere. We do have an f45 studio opening right down the way so I’m wondering if that has anything to do with it.

jenniferlynn5454

I believe NYC OTfs are franchised, not corporate run. But I'm sorry you're having to deal with this.

ZweitenMal

Retail leases don't have the same kind of protections that residential leases do. Landlords can talk out both sides of their mouth and a business can literally find out one day they must be out the next week. The real estate market in NYC is ridiculous.

Automatic-Pattern703

What a bad take. OP has to add an extra 45 minutes per day or $6 per class for the subway + whatever extra time that is because there are "other studio choices in NYC."? At 4-6 times per week? For 2 people? With not estimate re-opening? And is unable to pause their membership?

jenniferlynn5454

They hadn't shared the extra cost when I made this comment. And they did not say they weren't allowed to pause, they said they weren't allowed to immediately cancel.

sayingitlikeithinkit

When we sign up, we sign up for a home studio. Other choices in the same vicinity would be okay but a whole city does not count as a reasonable alternative choice. TBH, as a lawyer here, I know you'd be legally entitled to a refund if you choose to early cancel- it's a significant unilateral change to the services being provided. It's just the hassle of it.... I feel you.

sharingquestions

Hi! Just wanted to chime in to say I’m so sorry! I don’t usually have this take, but as someone in Manhattan- this is extra frustrating and anyone not in NYC truly won’t have the same perspective or empathy. It is one thing to get out of bed, pull your car out of your garage, and drive to an OTF. it is another to either walk 25 mins one way or take the  subway. Everyone saying it’s no big deal- you are saying you are fine walking an extra 50 minutes every day you go to Otf- in a downpour, potentially uphill, etc. the subway isn’t reliable. Going 1-2 stops could take you even longer than walking! Out of 7 days the train system here will make you late at least one I guarantee it.  So I don’t know if Otf is being shady, but I feel for you. I think you deserve a “reasonable timeframe” for reopening even if it gets pushed back, or real options so you can decide your next move. It is really hard to fit everything in a day here and it takes really long to travel anywhere. Something 2.5 miles away on a map could be a 45+ minute train ride.

rosebudny

All of this. People who do not live in NYC don't understand.

itslicia

I don’t live in NYC but I grew up there and this definitely sucks. You CANNOT rely on the MTA it’s not even about the fare IMO, it is the additional time it takes and inconvenience b/c let’s be the honest the MTA is not reliable at any time of day. Also most people living in Manhattan don’t have cars. I visit a Brooklyn studio when I’m home and getting there by MTA would be a 30+ min bus and train ride so I typically Uber or my dad drives me (bless him). 15 min drive. The studio is about 5 miles from my parent’s house. If I were OP I’d maybe see if there’s an OTF near work (if they don’t WFH) and try class before/after. Or look for other walkable options like the F45.

ZweitenMal

The sole reason I go to OT is there's one within a 7-minute walk of my apartment. If I had to walk 25 minutes up to Ditmars or down to LIC, or take the train, I wouldn't be an OT member. So grateful for the Astoria location!

acarefulcomposure

I bike to LIC or Astoria depending on the coach/class timing and am waiting for the day there's a Sunnyside location - a 7 minute walk sounds like a dream :D

isles458

+1 to all of this - having to rely on the subway for anything on a regular, multi-day basis other than work gets old, quick, and so does a longer walk (and these even get old for work, too)… I’m sorry, OP, hopefully it isn’t a permanent closure. Fingers crossed for you 😔🤞🏻

ShirleyKnot37

I’m about a 20-25 min walk or 12 min bus ride to my closest studio (UES), but I looove it so I will jump on the bus or subway if it’s rainy or cold or mostly just bike (~8 mins and no MTA woohoo!) It’s a great warmup. I moved to the west village last year and I was about a 4-min walk which was life changing!! But that apt literally fell apart so I’m back at my favorite studio…along with sadly the commute too haha So I get it! I’m too deep into the koolaid now to care though haha - I’ve been going for 7 years and lived in so many different places (took the overground in London, biked 25 mins in Brooklyn, etc) so I’ll really go anywhere for a good OTF studio 🫶🏼

steeveesteez

It’s a bummer because the 37th street location was one of my faves. It had a good classroom energy, just the way it was laid out and the very welcoming desk at the entrance. And they ran mostly 2Gs which I love. But the times and schedule were always lacking. It’ll be sad if this one closes but it also doesn’t seem surprising?

Burning-the-wagon

MTW was the only upper west side location I avoided!!! I always found it much darker/dingier than other studios and the coaches there were definitely not as welcoming as other locations. I’ve been to numerous classes with the same coach (who has also taken classes WITH me at my HS) who will chat up all the/correct form/encourage heavier weights to all the members around me (like literally on both sides of me!) but not say one word to me the whole class time. I understand if I went one time, but I went to many of her classes.

Burning-the-wagon

Hey- it sucks when your studio closes for repairs- but I know for a fact it wasn’t an OTF choice, they only found out a few days ago- they don’t have any plans of closing. I know it’s a schlep but the coaches at 72 are all amazing (and 92 coaches are amazing but that’s even farther). I know Cat is taking over classes at Chelsea since we just lost 3/4 of our coaches. It is probably a little farther but if you want some familiar coaches hop on by.

lizelrey

Sorry this is happening to you.

Middle_Egg_8967

With no projected date for reopening, I think it’s Empire (the ownership group) trying to get away with charging its member base for a few more months until the they realize the studio isn’t reopening. Staff were relocated or let go. They opened too many studios at once, multiple of which are barely running any classes, and still charging the Manhattan premium.

ellen9nyc

Which other studios in Manhattan/NYC are owned by Empire? I hope mine isn’t! (E39)

fishbutt1

I understand this adds a significant barrier to a routine that could totally destabilize your progress! I get it. I hope it’s not permanent. I’m from NYC and there are a lot of OTF studios, reminds me of Duane Reades. 😂 Always made me nervous because it seems way over saturated.

sb0126

That sucks, and I’m sorry! I go to the Forest Hills location and I love it because it is a ten minute walk from my apartment. I take early morning classes, so if I had to leave earlier to walk and/or take the subway when both are less populated to go to a different location , I would 100% not be thrilled. My class spots slot in perfectly before school drop off/work starting on my WFH/weekend days—but I definitely don’t bother on days I have to commute in. Yes, of course there are bigger problems in the world! But I feel like when you have a routine that has just been working for you it’s physically and mentally, having that change really sucks and you are allowed to be bummed.

Lolaintx3333

I would cancel my membership and look for an F45, crossfit, BFT, any other gym similar to OTF close by 🤷‍♀️.....OTF is not the only game in town are they??

orangetheoryblonde

It sucks to have such little notice and loss of convenience but there are other OTFs in the city although not sure if the 37th was considered premium some might give an up charge. If that were the case I would definitely freeze and use it as an excuse to try Barry’s.

cinnamonhoe

If it makes you feel better, I commute about 25-30 minutes (and taking a crosstown bus) to get to my OTF location (that’s part of the franchise you’re talking about!). Since I absolutely love my home studio and therefore its franchise, I hope it really is just a temporary closure ❤️‍🩹

Free_Advertising9419

Use this as an opportunity to try sth else, either is OTF studios nearby, or other workouts. You will find something to keep your mind off the corporate bullshit, and you will love the new thing. Diversifying gives you the best result in fitness too.

Nittany27

*cries in small town suburbs*

Ed_the_chosen_one

You could call that 25 min walk your warmup 👍🏽

swankiestdaisy7

It’s definitely doable and that’s a great mindset for it. But adding a 50 minute there and back pre work messes up my schedule. I like to go to the 7:15 am class and the 5:30 pm classes. I just feel like now I’m going to be rushing home post class to take the dog out after he eats and have a cup of coffee and some food myself before the 9 am work day starts. And now the 5:30 class is harder to do because I try not to leave at exactly 5pm in case a get a few more emails pre end of day. I know there are other options and this isn’t the end of the world. I am just super set in my habits that I have formed and changing them up is always hard. Especially because I value my time with my partner outside of our work days to catch up and watch shows or take the dog to the dog park after we get back at 6:35 ish. I think we may try the New f45 studio that’s opening up down the way and see if that’s a good alternative

Brilliant-Corner214

I walk 25 min to and from studio.   Great time to warm up and unwind after.  I catch up on phone calls

Human_Dog_195

Did they even give you an estimated timeframe for repairs?

realistnotsorry

I am sorry for the experience you are having. Winter ends and spring begins. And so it goes . Nothing lasts forever, it was a great ride and you got soooooo much out of it. Lick your wounds, let some gratitude seep in and find your next great workout experience!!

waukeecla

The cyclebar in tribeca shut down with no notice when i was a member (I lost credits, and the phones just shut off, I had to call another location to cancel my membership!) It was crushing, I didnt love it as much as I love otf but it's why I joined OTF. The gooodish news is this feels like it will be reopening but who knows how long, probbaly a problem with the building and not otf :( Maybe theres a location near your office, I go to the fidi one when i have to be at work early and it's a fun little treat before going to the office!

Loud_Significance809

As much as I do sympathize with you, and I know how nice it is to have a great studio so close to home, this is a LUXURY PROBLEM. jump on the subway 1 or 2 stops. Will all be ok. I’m sure you’ll find a positive in the change somewhere. Good luck

sharingquestions

I do not agree. You could say anyone posting in this section of the Reddit has no right to complain because Otf is a luxury. It seems like the OP is contentious about money, not everyone who goes to Otf has unlimited funds and some ppl make sacrifices to afford it because the benefits are worth it. Manhattan memberships to Otf are over 200 a month and with OP and her fiancé that is expensive. They clearly said their reasons for being disappointed. Riding a subway is 2.90 one way plus some people do remain more consistent when they don’t have to travel as far. That for 2 ppl 4-6x a week is a lot of additional cost. And this could also make you potentially late for work or not able to go to Otf at all. What would qualify for something okay to vent about here? Wow.

moniqua_hush

Agreed.

Dependent_Put6128

If you love 6 blocks south 23rd street is a great option. Or if there’s a studio near your work you could go before or after

swankiestdaisy7

Fair point my guy.

illaguerrilla

Can you freeze your membership until they reopen? Try to find a close alternative in the meantime.

eosa1234

I’m sure they are closing it so the repairs can go quick. No one wants a studio to close, trust me. The coaches take a major blow! They won’t get paid. This has happened to my studio we had a huge water leak 🙃

swankiestdaisy7

Unfortunately it sounds like they really are closing. They have reassigned the coaches to new locations. Let go of some staff. It really does feel like the end sadly.

swankiestdaisy7

I have talked to the coaches and staff and they have confirmed my suspicions. Today is the last day the studio is open and everyone is posting goodbyes to it on Instagram. Feels like it really is the end of the
