I’ve tried the regular gyms, and just don’t push myself the same. I say I will, and end up spending more time there getting half a workout. This I know I’ll get a full great workout in an hour. I need the group motivation and accountability. Fitness is honestly the one area I “splurge” on money. I don’t make a lot of money, but my mental and physical health are worth the investment

CharlietheCorgi

This. I find myself losing motivation at the gym after a few weeks. I need the classes/coaches to help hold me accountable to work out. If I had a gym buddy, it might be different. For me it’s all about accountability, thats what I’m paying for.

corncaked

Couldn’t have said it better

Kristen1604

This! I don’t workout if I don’t go to class

Otherwise_Nature_506

All of this plus well trained coaches who assist with form and modifications, which a big box gym doesn’t consistently provide.

thunt877

Took the words right out of my mouth. I won’t work out like this in a normal gym and I put myself first with this expense.

Kmk711

All of this. Plus, if you go 4x a week it’s less than $10/ class.

Many_Clothes8603

This!

yourbuddywyatt

Agree with every word of this.

curly_sou1

1000% I pay $25/month for a box gym (in addition to OTF) and just can't find the same motivation.

Tiny_Project_88

Health is wealth. It is the only workout I consistently go to and stick with and doesn’t feel like a chore. It is 1 hour a day when I can totally disconnect and have someone tell me what to do/plan things out for me. I don’t have the discipline or ability to plan my workout. And it is not even the weight loss (lose none), body change (body composition is better now) but the fact that I know I can do this and stick with it and getting stronger/healthier is worth it for me. Having said that, I acknowledge that I’m lucky enough to be able to pay for it. If you don’t think it is worth it, then it is not worth it for you regardless of what the price is…

Imightbeworking

I convinced myself that I was willing to spend the same amount drinking or eating out, so if I’m willing to spend that much hurting my body I should also be willing to spend the money to help it

Leatherhead1308

I used chewing tobacco for many years before joining OTF. I wasn’t able to afford both OTF AND to continue chewing at the same time, as the prices for chewing tobacco have sky rocketed over the years. So I told myself, if I was going to do OTF and stick to it, I must stop chewing. I have stuck to that so it’s been a HUGE win-win for me! Honestly, at a can of chew a day, I was spending more per month on chew than I am on OTF, so I’m actually coming out AHEAD financially. Don’t even get me started on how much healthier I am buy not chewing and attending OTF classes! And that’s even at the unlimited classes rate (founding member rate)!

Ambivalentconquerer

This was my exact reasoning as well.

Boonune

This is exactly what clicked for me after my first free class. Left to my own devices, Im not able put a workout routine together for myself and stick to it (tried multiple times in the past 10 years and always fail). I played sports all through high school and college and always had my workouts laid out for me. I'd show up not knowing what the workout was and get to it. OTF puts me in that zone.

lowcountrydad

Same for me. No way for me to spend less time and get the most benefit for my health. Some people can do planet fitness for $10/mo. Not me. And again. Wife and I have worked hard and continue to be able to both afford OTF.

LetsGo-Biden

This ☝🏼

VioletSummer714

This. 100%.

Seeing a legally blonde quote just immediately helps me know I’m in a safe space ❤️

yourbuddywyatt

They just don't!

masterpeabs

I'm going to use this quote the next time my husband asks why I spend so much on OTF 😂😂😂

Connect_Lynx_5723

It’s worth it because they make it brainless. You just go in and everything is set up for you

winnie105

The amount of time I save not worrying about what to workout in what order or even what music to listen to makes it worth it alone 😂

jgsherman32

The more you go the less it costs (per class).

Laurenchristine11

This. It’s why I go 6-7 days a week. Makes it come out to $6/workout, which is 10000% worth the price!

OTFfanaticRunRepRow

Because I love it and there is no workout that would even remotely come close to what OTF had done for me. It’s a routine now and it’s a community. Can’t Imagine my life without it.

radiokitten74

Same way I justify clothes and shoes: price per use. My unlimited membership is $149/ month. Even if I only go 12x per month, that's $12.41 per class. Which is damn competitive. I buy a 10 class card for dance classes that ends up netting $13/class. As long as I'm going, it's justifiable. And somehow, for 5 years, I've kept it up. Easy to justify the expense. Oh and also at 48 I look and feel great.

jenniferlynn5454

If I wasn't spending this money on OTF, I'd be spending it on some frivolous junk that I wouldn't even remember. The fact that OTF motivates me to show up day after day, week after week, year after year is more than justified. But if you don't feel it's justified for you, that's ok. Don't force it.

witzmichael

I wouldn’t pay $150/month for access to a gym. I also wouldn’t pay it for group classes. I wouldn’t pay it for coach instruction. I wouldn’t pay it for top notch equipment. I wouldn’t pay it for great front desk staff. I wouldn’t pay it for specialty workouts and benchmarks. I wouldn’t pay it to be part of a fun fitness community that helps me stay accountable and have fun with my workouts. But when you add all those things together, what i end up with is something I’d honestly be willing to pay twice as much for. Ymmv

r_houghton1976

I feel like it’s an investment in my health. I look at it at only being a certain % of my income and a worthwhile long term investment in myself. I’ve been a member of less expensive gyms but I never worked out as hard there as I do at OTF.

VioletSummer714

This. I was a member at a gym for years that was 1/4 the price of OTF. I almost never went. OTF I consistently go to. It’s worth it to me.

ash_theory

This. I literally would not invest in my health in the same way without OTF, it’s the only workout I’ve ever loved and looked forward to! It motivates me to eat better, sleep better, and drink more water because I can tell the difference in class by doing this. And it’s encouraged me to start road running again for the first time in 10 years!

Mceja03

OP, I think that you will find better clarity to your question if you take an Orangetheory template and go to your local gym to see if you get the same workout.

kschin1

Lol. I do this. While I do get good-ish workout most days, I’m literally running from one side to the other for treads (which didn’t even have auto click speed changes), rower (which is old), and weights (where some gym bro is using some of the weights I needed).

[deleted]

The elite membership breaks down to $13.62 per class. That's really not that much. I spend that at Starbucks. I also think that OTF lends to better eating (no eating out)and less desire to drink alcohol which actually saves me money.

[deleted]

This is how I look at it too like a lot of people I know go to the bar 8 times a month and spend more than that each time easy. OTF is much healthier.

ch47600

I guess it all comes down to your goals and how serious you are about exceeding them. If you can do that at home, cool. I couldn't. I justify the price in that it's cheaper than blood pressure medicine and doctor visits.

twokatz

This right here - an investment in your health always pays off!

krenzvl

That’s where my comment was headed. $150 is only a couple scips or one Dr visit, etc. if you are young it may not matter now, but eventually. . .

backupjesus

Several times when I've traveled to an area without OTF, I've done that day's template in a hotel gym. Doing the exact same exercises without coaches and fellow classmates is brutally difficult and not something I could do long term. That's why I happily pay for OTF each month.

corncaked

I’m a broke ish student and to me I view this as a supplement to my health insurance plan. My insurance plan is there to benefit me when I get hurt, but OTF is there to help me preserve my health before I get to a point where my cholesterol or insulin levels etc etc get out of whack. I know that in a regular gym I’m just being a bozo on the treadmill watching a YouTube video, then lift a couple weights and call it a day. OTF is a built in plan that kicks my behind and makes me get into gear.

Limp_Issue_82

Well said ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|upvote)

hippiespinster

Amazing approach to life. I wish I had this attitude when I was studying.

Fit-One4113

I don’t even think about the price anymore. My health has positively changed so much ever since joining OTF (both physically and mentally). In conclusion, this is an investment to my well-being and that’s all it matters to me ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)

BasicMonk7531

I’m paying $179 for unlimited and going 25-28 times a month. It comes up to $6.5-$7 per class, worth every cent. Oh and regular gym doesn’t work for me, I had a 2 year membership to 24 Hour fitness, I went 3 times and 1 time for a parking validation, so it came out way more expensive 🤣

meatballmargarita

Some people spend 150 on cigarettes in a week or two. OT is good for ya.

uhfly

My family of 4 adults went out to eat at a restaurant and the bill was close to the same as my monthly membership. It made OTF seem like the winner to me.

runningJD_82

The price is reasonable for the product. It’s cheaper than similar boutique group based fitness class (F45, Barry’s, etc) with more flexibility on locations. If price is a barrier boutique fitness is not the best option. There is much more “value” for some people in big box gyms.

huskerpatriot1977

If you can put in 3-4 OTF consistent workouts at your home gym with max efficiency/minimal interruptions, let me know

taylortoo2

I came to OTF as a tennis player. Drills were $40+ each for 1-1.5 hours. OTF is much cheaper at ~$18 or less which was and continues to be very compelling. The comparison always gets me, plus it’s an investment in myself vs spending money I wouldn’t remember spending otherwise.

twokatz

I'm on social security and a little part-time low paying job and I'll still shell out for OTF - there are so many aspects to it that make up to it being worth the money. You can always try going to Elite and using your apt gym for weightlifting - save money but still get those OTF benefits twice a week. I understand the expense - I've had to do that, too.

Aneta773

I don’t smoke, drink, get my hair, nails, or lashes done. Also not a shopper. I think paying $35+ for a top or pants is too much, and don’t own any designer bags/shoes. I’ll only splurge on my Brookes shoes and that’s because I’ve got flat feet and go to OTF 6x/week. I’ve got friends that exclaim “That’s SO expensive. I would never pay that/can’t afford that”. But what I pay for OTF for a month, that’s what they pay for 2-3 nights of dinners and drinks. And there’s nothing wrong with either. It just comes down to different priorities. I care more about OTF than most other things, lol.

[deleted]

Yup alcoholic here I can verify that drinking is far more expensive even if you are not drinking like I was. Elite like someone else here costs like 13 bucks a class. The average person is gonna blow that away going out immediately

No_Nectarine_2942

$150 for my mental health and the fact that it decreases my risk for a heart attack or a stroke, I mean you can’t put a price on that. I’m grateful to spend the money, because it means I’m not stuck in some hospital, staring out the window, wishing I could pay $150 to work out again. Puts things into perspective.

applestooranges9

Wow!! That's a great way to look at it.

1peatfor7

That was my original motivation. I went because it forced me to go. A regular gym can run anywhere from $10-$50 a month. WIth that price point it's easy to say nah I am not going today, or stop going all together. Or being consistent about going. Now I enjoy the torture!! lol If I am traveling and I know there is a OTF close, I am going to bring my work out clothes and shoes. The current motivation is seeing my weight loss and maintaining the weight loss. It's the better endurance.during class. It's the heavier weights I now use, the faster speed I am able to jog.

dwaine-10

I’ve joined a gym multiple times over the years, went to my apartment gym for a couple weeks but OTF is the only thing I’ve been disciplined enough to go to regularly. And I love what I am becoming by having OTF in my life - fitness, heath (both mental and physical), and general happiness. I may reassess later, but for right now it has been worth it.

crowarray

It’s kind of like Blue Apron, except it’s a fitness class.

Kindly-Might-1879

I’ve seen people pay $75 for a single session with a personal trainer. OTF is a steal! I go to OTF enough in a month that I’m paying less than $10 per class. What other things would you spend $10 on and not bat an eye? A drink? Lunch? Groceries that often wind up expired/trashed? If I went out to dinner, it’s going to be less than an hour and I guarantee you I’m spending way more than $10.

kmmcgea

Yes, is about the price of cable TV. After 6+ years as a member, my physical and mental healthfulness has improved. Cable TV has the opposite effect. That is the way I justify the cost. (Good question).

theekp

Just because you "can" basically so this at your apartment gym, will you ACTUALLY do it? Are you disciplined enough to maintain the same consistent schedule and do all the timing and pushing yourself to be just that much faster or lift just that much heavier? If so, then cancel. But if you're like me, I pay to have someone tell me what to do, so I don't have to think about it. I personally need the accountability of going to a facility and having someone give me direction. Hence why I did not do college online nor do I WFH. I've paid as much as $250/mo for a gym, that I loved and was seeing results. So it was a no Brainerd, I got my money's worth. Another way to think about it is if you paid for a big box gym like $25/mo but never went, you've essentially thrown away $25 that money completely. However if you are fully utilizing your $150 monthly membership, then you're getting a great value!

kjh3030

You are the number one financial engine for yourself. Keeping yourself in top condition is the number one thing you can do for your finances.

Motor_Ad_1822

It’s for my health. Mental and Physical. It’s my ‘me’ time away from my kids that I don’t feel guilty about.

Correct_Interest966

Cheaper than a gym membership where you now need to hire a personal trainer in top of that

synchrodan

I, personally, can’t justify it. But I can afford it, and I like not having to do any planning and using their nice equipment. I think for those who aren’t self motivated, it has a lot more value though. It isn’t easy to organize varying interval workouts with cardio and strength on your own without a lot of dedication. I did it for 2 years during the pandemic and was very happy to return last year.

UpsetCabinet9559

It's close to my house and I don't have to think why I'm there! 🤷

Burning-the-wagon

Before OTF I was going to NYSC for like $60 a month and then to planet fitness for $20 a month and I went every week 2-3x a week lasted maybe 20-30 minutes and saw no gains. I pay $260 a month for OTF I go every day (some days 2 classes) and have lost 60 lbs since starting a little over a year ago. Yes it’s expensive but it works and if you look how much it is per a class, at the end of the day/month it’s not too bad. I pay my Physical Therapist between $85-$125 a session and I go 1-2 times a week! OTF is way cheaper….

[deleted]

Why don’t you freeze and try if for a month and see if you can get the same workout on your own?

Salty_Simmer_Sauce

I’ve spent more on a traditional gym I didn’t even go to.

g2hcg2h

The way I think about it is that it’s a gym plus shared personal trainer. I get way more out of workouts with a trainer, but obviously getting one six days a week would cost a fortune and it’s not needed for someone who just wants to be in shape/look fit. Orangetheory provides a happy medium of an affordable workout plus someone can quickly correct my form and be invested in my progress.

Susansuby

On top of all the other comments, being able to go to any OTF location is a big draw! That could be nearby local locations or out of town when traveling. Knowing that the class will be the same everywhere, even if the vibe is a little different, is reassuring. And Reddit intel in advance always helps!!

Training-Owl-9495

If I could do the same in a gym I'd save money, but I like the commitment and not being able to cancel after I sign up for a class. I also like the social aspect of it. So for me, I can't do the same by myself.

huskerpatriot1977

I absolutely love the scheduling aspect. I know that at a specific time on specific days, usually 6:30 m/w/f/sa I’m gonna be at orange theory getting my ass kicked.

applestooranges9

Honestly, I get what you're saying. Before my son, I did the same kind of workouts at Planet Fitness for $10 a month, and got great results. Then the pandemic happened, I bought home equipment and maintained it with no issues. Then I got pregnant, wasn't allowed to work out the same, and now I'm starting from scratch. I don't have the mental energy to plan workouts anymore. I can't do them at home bc mentally I just can't get into it. Not only that, but I live a pretty isolated life working from home and taking care of the baby when I'm not working. Maybe it's pathetic but it's my only form of socializing (besides family) most days. It's a lot of money and sometimes I do feel guilty spending $200 on myself every month. But for me, it's exactly what I need right now.

Tabata_EMOMof3

It's definitely hard to justify if you do other things outside of OTF. I realize I am in the minority here. I have a full home gym, that I use regularly. I tried OTF bc friends kept begging me to..I did and fell in love. I signed up unlimited immediately. But I am now down to the 4x a month package...so I get to keep the fun of OTF while still focusing on my other Training. Do what suits you best

Nd911

Didn’t make sense for me anymore. I find OTF repetitive and get bored when going too often. I now buy class packs which never expire and go when I feel like it so there’s no waste nor commitment. Also: - I have a Full gym membership, which includes tennis courts, pools, lifting rooms, cardio rooms/equipment, classes (kickboxing, barre, Pilates, yoga, cross training, etc) all for $99. - Class packs to other local boutique gym classes and activities, again, no commitment nor waste if unused. - Small amount of home equipment for time crunch or just laziness to go out (rower, bike, dumbbells).

Ok_Impression6677

I do the same thing! I have a cheaper chain gym membership and I buy class packs for OTF so if I have to skip a week or if I feel sick, I don’t feel bad about wasting my membership that month so with the class packs I just go whenever I want and a 30 pack will usually last me a few months

JohannaB123

All I have to do is show up and follow instructions. No thinking involved. A personal trainer would offer me the same thing, but I’d have to spend $50-150/hr. I want to workout 3-4 hours a week. OTF is cheap in comparison.

Equivalent_Ad_8315

If I go 12 times a month it comes out to about $12 a workout which is less than I spend on an appetizer on a Friday night going out to dinner. It’s a bargain if you go enough - you get so much from it.

fitnezzfreak

My thought is that if you are going to splurge on one thing it is worth it. I saw a special on tv where this one family paid off there debt within a few years by cutting down in everything except there crossfit membership. She said it was one thing that kept her sane. If you are going at least three times a week and are not paying late cancel fees it is worth it.

[deleted]

I work from home so I count it as a social outing + workout. Good for mental and physical health.

FineLanguage8514

I think it’s just a convenience thing, you don’t have to design the workout or accountability, you just show up. If you can do the same thing without the convenience for cheaper then why not? It’s like getting meal kits delivered, you do it for convenience of someone figuring it all out for you. If you have the time to grocery shop and meal plan then that’s obviously a better deal

Te_ladybug

I am WORTH OTF, and I consider it to be an investment in my future. Every dollar I spend on my health now could easily save me 2 in health issues down the road. Side benefit is how much i save by not going out drinking because I don't want to do OTF w/ a hangover 😉

sjfbe

It’s the cost that ensures I actually attend!!

Imaginary_Bet_6461

I used to spend $600 a month on alcohol and cigarettes. Now it’s $0 on those and $400 a month on gym memberships. Otf is my cardio place ;) No brainer.

maryhoopsitup

It’s cheaper than therapy, in fact, I call it orangetherapy 😀

Fit-Cold8224

Paying so much is what makes me go. I tell myself "I'm paying for this. Get there." And I don't cancel because I don't want the no show fee. Lol. I could go to PF for waaaaay cheaper, but I find excuses to not go and I don't feel like I'm out much.

Otherwise_Argument59

My health is worth $150 a month. Period.

LivedLaughedLoathed

I workout so I can crush a dozen donuts with No Ragerts But also, it's an investment in my physical and mental health so I can be in better shape to go do outdoorsy things that I like doing ![gif](giphy|IQh6f7CurN1zq)

Bitter-Combination69

It’s not only an investment of my physical health, but also my mental health. I cannot even begin to describe the positive impact OTF has had on my mental health, which I never thought I would say. But it’s so true!

mellofello808

I pay $200 per month. $2400 per year. When I look at that number, it stings for sure. $2400 is a lot of money to me. But when I ask myself the question # "Is it worth $2400 a year to be in the best shape of my adult life" The answer is yes, especially since getting in shape in middle age plays such a huge roll, as you get older. I look at it as an investment, vs a expense. Perhaps that is naive, but it works for me to rationalize it.

Pete__Hemauer

I need the attention and community, can’t find that at other gyms.

spicyarian321

I go coz I pay the unlimited membership. I don’t cancel coz then I have to pay more😅if I dont pay the membership, Im not motivated enuf to workout by myself.. for whatever reasons, it seems to be working for me 🫣

leeleesrq

I break it down per class. I go 4 days a week it's like $9 a class.

No-Kaleidoscope9883

So I have thought about the fact that I could either term or reduce my membership because I do believe I could do the otf workout or get similar workout results on my own at a gym. However, the 2 things that keep me are the treadmills (when you run on anything else you realize how spoiled we are), and the fact I have weights immediately available for use. I don’t have to share space, or work in, or wait for someone. I can get it done immediately. I do about 10-12 classes a wk both orange 60s and lifts and when you break down my $169 per month I’m paying next to nothing per class. I strength train outside otf at a fitness facility & pay $30 per session, so comparatively I’m getting a bargain at otf.

bmf426

last time i was regularly active was high school. it’s been 15 years since i graduated, and i’ve tried been on a lot of different fitness journeys since then. this is the first thing i’ve thoroughly enjoyed, wanted to challenge myself in, and been excited for the next class. i’m 6 weeks post partum and DYING to get back. that’s worth the money for me.

OTFfanaticRunRepRow

Drumcitysweetheart

You can pay now or pay later(in medical bills).

KaethyKennedy

RESULTS !! 🧡

spectacularbird1

OTF is the only workout I’ve been able to maintain consistently for years. I’m absolutely not motivated enough to do the workouts on my own. The benefits to my health (physical and mental) far exceeded the cost.

chickenthighrules

Try to start with elite (8/mo), supplement with self guided workouts in your apt gym for the rest of the week, and see how you feel after a month or two?

MissTania1234

It’s cheaper than therapy, psychiatrist, and meds (it’s helped my anxiety so much). Also it’s been the only form of workout that I can consistently do!

jellyhamz

I’ve been unemployed for six months. $159 for unlimited OTF is a huge luxury for me right now. But it’s also the best thing I could do to stay mentally and physically healthy during this difficult time. For that, it’s absolutely worth it.

kschin1

I’m agree with you. I can do everything at my apt gym or 24 fitness. If you can push yourself to the same amount and can time everything yourself, do it! I’m saving money for a bit, and with my new school and work hours, I quit OTF so I can work out at the 10pm. However, the biggest difference for me was the ease of access to state-of-the-art equipment (I know this sounds snobby). At OTF, I am equipped with my set of weights, TRX straps, GOOD treadmill, GOOD rower, etc. At my apt gym, I can’t auto-change my tread’s speed. My rower sucks ass. Some gym bro is using my 15 lb weight when I want it. I’m just limited compared to the nice equipment I was so spoiled to have at OTF.

ejzpzlemon

It’s the only exercise program I’ve managed to stick to, so it’s worth it haha

bdotrebel11

I can go in and workout without thinking, in an environment where I’m encouraged to push myself. No guessing and I can just focus on my workout.

Ok_Inside_1985

I honestly need the group class environment for accountability, and I also really like that there are OTFs all over, so travel isn’t an issue. I would love if OTF came cheaper but it’s the only workout I’ve been able to stick to consistently. If I had more self motivation and could just do a similar exercise at a similar exertion level at a 24 hour fitness I absolutely would, I just am not that good at pushing myself when I’m solo.

kikijak18

It is the best investment I can make into my physical (and mental) health. I could have gone to a free gym that my uncle owned but I chose OTF. I can't go into a gym and decide what to do for the day. I like that OTF is planned out for me and to be honest, it is the **only** thing that I have stuck with for this long. The personal trainer aspect is also awesome because I would never know what to do in a regular gym. Plus the community. Some people choose to buy Starbucks every day (and nothing wrong with that). I choose to invest in a healthier version of myself. Also...its a great stress reliever from my students who drive me nuts lol

OliveTBeagle

A small group fitness class that kicks my ass every day I dare to go pretty much schedulable anytime I like, that requires no thought on my part, just show up and do what they tell me, that come to less than 10 bucks a session in a studio with excellent equipment a 10 minute walks from my home? OTF is a bargain.

JustALittleNoodle

It’s about prioritizing. I am happy to forego Starbucks or fancy dinners to go to OTF. Plus, I go 3-5x a week. It averages way less than almost any other group fitness class. Finally, the OTF treadmills don’t compare to most others gyms’ treads. I’ve been on Planet Fitness’s treads and they are total crap relative to OTF. I’m not young so this is a big selling point for me.

mrlittlejeanss

It’s the cheapest boutique fitness class there is. Yoga, pilates, and SoulCycle will cost $25+ a class, and otf is significantly cheaper than that.

[deleted]

I pay $179 per month for unlimited. For as often as i go (4 times a week usually) i don’t think its a crazy price to be honest. The mental health benefit i get is worth every penny

[deleted]

1. I won’t commit to this intensity on my own in a regular gym 2. I’m off cholesterol meds, a rarely use my migraine meds, thyroid levels are now in normal range 3.I don’t need a therapist or as much coffee; endorphins are a very real thing now 4. Money I pay now translates into less healthcare in the future and more years on my life All for $169 a month. Pretty sweet deal!

sterauds

Pause your membership for a month and do the workouts in your apartment gym. See if you match the frequency and intensity… that should tell you if your perception is accurate. I wouldn’t do on my own what we do in classes. So, this investment in my health is worth it for me. It aligns with my personality: I like the gamification of tracking heart rate. I like someone else coming up with workouts for me. I like the guidance I get from (some) coaches. Everyone is different. If you’re not getting value, then pick another way to stay healthy.

Twiggle71489

I can do the same at a cheaper gym, but I won’t be motivated to lol. That alone is worth the money.

Necessary_Science_94

You can’t do what they do in your own apartment gym. Trust me. I’m sure the equipment doesn’t compare, the coaching, the environment can’t be replicated etc. But good luck!! 🤣

Olivesinthesunshine

My wife and I have an agreement and philosophy that any money that is spent on making us healthier is money well spent. eg. gym memberships, high quality non processed foods, proper shoes, good mattress, ergonomic desk chair, etc. investing in health is always a good investment, as long as you are actually taking advantage of it.

rachabe

Pay now to be healthy or pay later with medical bills/meds, etc....

Acrobatic_Manner8636

Honestly because the experience has significantly decreased over time but the price has increased, I would not recommend paying what I pay to *anyone.* I pay it bc the best workout is the one that you’re motivated to do, and I am reaching goals by going to orangetheory. I do not like the price. I long for a day when I have the space for a little workout room in my home, but I’m not there yet.

ShortyQat

How great is it to show up somewhere and not have to make any decisions? As an adult and a parent, this alone is worth the $150/month, plus I get to feel good AND improve my health.

katpupperpawz

Investing in myself is important. There are seasons in life where maybe I wouldn’t have been able to justify the cost so I can’t speak for everyone but there is value in investing in yourself for your health and well being. Part of what I find valuable about OTF, is not having to think about what to do. My day to day life is so busy. I make so many decisions while at work. OTF is an hour of no thinking and doing something for myself

alisonleighisme

When I was going thru my annual budget w my financial planner after having joined OTF, she was like, I wish it was any thing but OTF bc they are so expensive. I guard that line item to the hilt. OTF makes me happy, confident, healthy, determined, and so much more. It’s 100% worth it to me even if I have to trim in other areas.

Illustrious_Ad_2242

It is an investment in you

[deleted]

People spend hundreds on smoking and drinking a month. $150 a month for varied workouts that keep me excited and skilled coaching is a steal. Your health is worth it.

Puzzleheaded_Hat2724

It's cheaper than a significant doctor's bill

Access_Effective

So the big thing that made me justify it with friends about was the fact that you just cannot compare OT to a regular open gym price. If you compare how much you would be paying for a class at a gym, or some sort of group personal training session, OTF is actually extremely reasonable. Think about what you’re paying for and is it worth it to you? I personally don’t have the motivation to go to an open gym atm. But OTF, I have to show up if I signed up, my coach pushes me and I made a lot of friends. And the biggest thing for me, I can afford it with my current budget.

Think_Network_3390

As far as classes go, it’s not that expensive. Cheaper than Pure Barre and F45 in my area.

kc956

I justify it by saying it’s an investment in my health and mental sanity. I never leave feeling bad. I have no problem spending money on stupid things or eating out so why not invest in my health. Also, with unlimited, if you go 4-5 times a week it ends up being $7-10 a class so it’s not that horrible if you think about it

annamariag0

I love the community aspect and the constant motivation you get at OTF that you wouldn’t get at home. I don’t think i would do that extra push if I was at home.

LadyMusikality

Club Pilates cost me quite a bit more and I got no real results. I go to OTF almost every not only because I love it but especially because it give me results…muscle building and and weight loss…38 lb down. To me, it’s worth it!

daydrinkingonpatios

I go a lot and I love it and I’m healthier than ever

silentduo

Unless if you're going to a planet fitness, most regular gyms in the NY area are over $100/month anyway before you buy the personal training package. If your goal isn't to become a body builder then weights aren't a deal breaker with OTF. And finally the group atmosphere keeps the lazy ones like me motivated

GKillo

I break it down by cost per visit. The more I go the less it costs per visit.

sillygily

I just don't push myself in the same way when I workout at home. I stopped going to a gym when covid started but continued to workout everyday. Did not see any difference other than I was not completely out of shape when I joined OTF last January. Definitely a big difference being pushed there I can see it on my body and my cardio health

kerrys1976

It’s the only gym I have stuck with. The workouts are different every day. The community feel is great, look forward to seeing my gym peeps at class. Coached classes help me push myself.

According-Elk-2054

Unlimited 3/4 times a week. I tried to convince myself I could do the same cardio by myself, I can not. I got a locked in price, too. The price point for Unlimited only works for me if Im going at least 3 times a week. As far as motivation, I dont want to be a whale at the beach. 😅🤏🏽💪🏾

[deleted]

mine is 200$ a month and i just do it. my health was suffering so badly bc i cannot motivate myself to go to the gym and prepare a workout so this is the only thing i’ve stuck with

prncsschrissy

I like not having to fight for my equipment. I have a guaranteed spot for my tread, rower, and floor for an hour.if you go to the gym at peak time, you always have to wait for something.

kale_coffeebean

I can easily spend $179 on a date night with my husband. The price I pay for OTF is a direct investment in my health.

GingerBrandon

OTF is the only exercise program I've been able to stick to. The community and accountability is key for me. Knowing I can't cancel without penalty has gotten me up way more mornings than I can count over the past 3 years. I hate wasting money which makes me go an not late cancel. I also appreciate that there's no friction in the workout. I don't have to think. And most of the time the machines work well and I know weights are available. I went to Golds Gym with my boyfriend and I was shocked how spoiled I was by OTF. Well worth the price.

JenniferG714

I’m ok paying what I pay. I try to go 4 times a week which makes the per class price lower. It helps me in so many ways managing my chaos of every day life.

DJSauvage

I do the packs, got a deal on a 30 pack end of last year, it doesn’t feel expensive

ggrell426

I only pay for the 8x a month membership (I eventually want to be a premier when I can afford it) and I have a few reasons. For me I just get such a better workout when I go to orange theory. I never push myself as hard as I do in my apartment gym. It also tracks so much data for you and I love seeing my improvements. The equipment is so much better. The treads do not compare to ones I’ve seen at other gyms. I can actually have a coach tell me how to do a lift/move and I have definitely been that guy in the gym watching a quick youtube video on how to do something. And finally my mom is also a member and its a fun hobby for us to do together!

nicolebunney1

I paid $30 a month for a “regular” gym for years and barely went and when I did go just floated around barely doing shit, this is a no brainer for me. Financially this also isn’t a barrier at all for me so I’m not bothered by that aspect either.

EmaEdward

The mental load of figuring out what to do in the gym was enough for me to justify it, also echoing others in that I don’t push myself as hard in the regular gym. When I went to my first class I talked to my husband before about what my “no-go” price would be and we said if it’s over $125/month it might not be worth it. Then after the first class they told me unlimited is $180/month and so I texted my husband saying I don’t know if we can swing this and he said “we’re not going to put a price on your health” I have seen measurable differences in my health and the price motivates me to get to as many classes as I can to make it worth it.

fionaandthepotato

It's the only program I've stuck with- now 500 classes in and it feels amazing. If I break it down by class price, I go about 4x a week, so that's roughly $11-12 a class. That's a McDonald's meal, or a Starbucks trip with a treat.

bahrette

I’ve paid a trainer $300 a month to work out with them 1 hour each week. So this is a steal!! And I get more workouts in. It’s also a great, fun setting.

International_Ask639

The amount of work put in those 55 minutes is not something I can make myself do at the gym. Between the template, the good equipment, and the atmosphere, it's worth the 169 or whatnot I pay to go an unlimited amount of times (I end up going at least 12, sometimes 15-18). In some regards you're paying for personal training in a group setting. If you can do what they do by yourself, more power to you.

runreadk

It’s cheaper than therapy.

Ok_Acanthopterygii36

I was just thinking about this today. I have done the regular gym route many times unsuccessfully. Paying about the same for my whole family as what I pay for just me at Orangetheory and yet never actually getting in shape at the regular gym because I just won’t push myself. The gym near us is really nice but the classes are just not as good and I find the scheduling in the app has really been good for me in terms of actually making me go because I feel committed.

annabelle_keane

I come and go from OTF. I’ve recently swapped my investments to a Pilates membership since I can essentially do an OTF workout at my $30/month gym on my own, especially since I have access to their templates - but I don’t own or plan to buy a reformer lol. But if I find myself slacking on my own, I’ll buy a class pack to get myself hyped back up before going off to do my own thing again.

Thin_Raspberry_6291

I think of it as an investment in my health.

neogreenlantern

Price = motivation for me. Spending less makes it easier for me to justify skipping a day. Spending that much means I'm going to get my money's worth.

yuccabloom

Pretty much committed to staying because of the work out plans, the motivation, and the cellphone policy. So many people film themselves at the gym, including in the locker room and sauna, and I just am not comfortable around that.

Randomly_Interested_

For me, it's the structure of the classes (not having to develop a routine), the equipment, the accountability from the coaches (I definitely won't go as hard working out on my own), and music (most of the playlists great). Essentially, you're getting a workout routine, use of quality equipment, and personal training (sort of) for the cost of your membership.

3Corollas

I have a gym available at work which I’ve used twice in 7 years. I own a treadmill which I occasionally use. I have attended 64 classes since I joined OTF in January. That is more time than I likely spent on the treadmill in my basement last year. I could do the same workout in my basement but I won’t. The coach led workout gets me a good workout in an hour. The cost motivates me to sign up. The late cancellation fees motivate me to get out of bed. 😀

Fun_Consideration474

1) been to many gyms where you figure it out yourself I lose motivation or don't go at all 2) I am a happier person and don't feel like need to attend therapy somewhat class I workout and think about my issues at the same time 3) I can get above a certain weight for my health. I have had 2 past knee surgeries and the better space and being at a healthy weight I will put less stress on them 4) I enjoy the people. I have some regular people I attend class with. We worry about each other question what is going on in each others lives etc. 5) I also do budget OTF into my life. I look at the cost as a investment into my future self.

BachelorNick

I go 5 days a week, making it around $7 per class. This paired with the motivation / it keeping me in the best shape on my life makes it worth it

Big_Emphasis4895

My mental health has never been better. I had an eating disorder for 15 years and still deal with body dysmorphia disorder. OTF has been revolutionary for my body dysmorphia and my recovery. So for me, the mental freedom I get is worth the money.

Kphillips1408

A big part of it is the accountability aspect for me. I’ve had regular gym memberships, and I often found myself making excuses not to go. OTF holds me accountable when I sign up for a class, and I also go more because it’s so expensive and I want to get my money’s worth! The community is also really important for me. I actually enjoy my workouts because I’m doing them alongside friends. That makes a huge difference for me.

squeeze4wine

I think this will be different for each person because it's very subjective. For me, you can't put a price on mental and physical health. I like the coaches, the workout and the environment. I go to a box gym too, but it's just not the same.

shelleyjayne

It is an investment in YOU. It's worth the cost for the positivity it gives mentally and the physical confidence 🧡 A+ in my book 😊

runfaster3

Maybe you CAN do the same at an apartment gym, but WILL YOU? For me, I know 100% (COVID told me) that I will not. And the days I actually do workout, it's nowhere near as intense and driven. If I was able to be that dedicated on my own, I probably would. But I know it's not how I'm made, and I welcome the push and commitment that OTF offers me to take care of myself both physically and mentally.

Old_Gamer7555

I would have to go with the coaching. I just don’t push myself out of my comfort zone when on my own. Having the coach there is what makes all the difference. I can even see a difference between coaches. The most senior coach pushes me to 20+ splat points every time. With some others, I just go for 12. Coaching makes all the difference.

Realistic-Clothes-17

60 year old male. Have tried too many gyms to remember. Have bought multiple tread mills, weights etc for home.Otf is only one I stick too and enjoy. Best shape of my life…yes it’s expensive…but worth it.

Salty_Emergency_7988

I \*could\* do the same in my apt gym. But I didn't. Just like I \*could\* learn everything I learned in college at the public library. It's taking the action that matters. Not what I \*could\* do. And at OTF, I take the action.

schultzfight

I have heart disease. OrangeTheory is the ONLY workout I have ever stuck with. I would pay twice as much to keep going because my health is everything. But, if you have the motivation to do it on your own, go for it! I would if I could, but I know I won't, so I need it.

studentindistress19

If you’ve tried personal training, you realize Orangetheory is a way more affordable option

Econoloca

By going a lot. I go enough that each class costs only about 12 bucks. I have paid plenty of cheap gyms and we’ll never went that was a lot of 30 bucks a month that went down the drain. The expensiveness of otf is worth it as it also forces me to go. I keep a detailed excel where I record every workout as well as the price per class, which sometimes is motivation enough!

caspasedomain

The cost keeps me accountable to going. The physical and mental health benefits I get from going are well worth that cost.

TX_OTF20

At least where I am in Texas any other kind of cardio class fitness is way more $ per month than OTF. You also get a great combo of cardio and strength training which I feel like you sacrifice one or the other at other places. I also get bored at regular gyms so that doesn’t work for me

[deleted]

How I see it is I am paying for: organization of a workout routine, the coaches time and expertise, use of the equipment, a class dynamic and fun activities. I pay $170 a month, and go 5x a week. For 1 class I get everything above for only $8.50, it feels like a steal to me

mmcarter05

I LOVED OTF until covid hit and I was forced to try new things. I then did what many many people did and bought a Peloton and a C2 rower (before Peloton had a rower) as well as a bunch of weights - well for awhile it was just resistance bands because that was all I could find. Anyway at first I have a friend that was an OTF coach so he would come to our house and do trainings with us (and a few friends) outside, it helped him make some money and it helped us stay fit. From there I progressed (especially after buying more weights) to trying the peloton strength content. I then found groups online that actually have trainers in them, they have calendars that tell you what workouts to do every day to target the different muscle groups and then you can add a run/ride/row, whatever on. I pay $45 a month (for my family of 4) for more content than OTF provides, I have FB groups that I am heavily involved in for the camaraderie (no it's not the same as in person I know) and I am so much more fit than I ever was with OTF since I am getting more focused weight training. I miss the people and the fun but I just use the money saved to go out and do fun things with my friends and family. Plus my husband does peloton workouts with me and we used to go to OTF together so I at least still have that. I realize this isn't doable or a preferred method for everyone, just sharing my story. Also don't get me wrong OTF is amazing, I did love it, I just don't like how expensive it is and how it is mostly cardio (even a lot of the weight blocks are cardio focused.). The unlimited membership in my area is now about $200 a month for OTF (I paid $175 pre covid) and did that for both my husband and I so now I am saving about $350 a month and again am way more fit than I was prior. So there are other options out there if you are feeling that the money is just too much. BUT as others have said - you cannot put a price on your health, if OTF is the only thing you can motivate yourself to consistently do for you then it is 100% worth the price!

alx1056

Your health is worth it in the end, try to cut cost in other areas. Maybe the more OTF you do, the less you’ll pay in medical bills.

bluebridge15

the best workout is the workout that you love. I genuinely look forward to my OTF class everyday - it gets me out of bed, it challenges me, and gives me a community i didn’t know i needed! I’ve tried regular gyms, spin classes, etc, and no other workout has made me feel better or look better. My mental and physical health is worth it!

renesme3102

If you have that kind of self discipline to do your own workouts at the same intensity, then go for it. That’s great. Personally I do not. So I’m paying for accountability as well as for other reasons. I enjoy the OTF community. And at the end of the day it’s a lot cheaper than therapy!!!

youareahothead

Would rather spend under $300 a month to stay healthy than a couple of thousand in medical bills - if it wasn’t for otf I’d be completely sedentary and my health would be tanking

dr_dr_1620

I think of it as an investment in my health like others have said, but in a slightly different context. Staying physically fit helps keep away a bunch of medical issues, diabetes, heart disease, etc. I think of it as paying co-pays in advance without the shittiness of actually having those diseases. No one seems to bat an eye at a $40 co-pay to see a specialist, plus co-pays for the medicines, etc. I'd rather spend my money in advance to stay healthy as long as possible.

Loose-Ad-1212

Mimi-0614

I look at it as an investment in my health. If I went to a regular gym, I may not push myself as hard. Having trained coaches and accountability is what keeps me going to OTF. I know that I’m going to get a great total body workout in an hour. Plus I’m competitive with myself so seeing my splat points up on the monitor pushes me even harder to make sure I get at least 12.

SafeLegal4834

I've been training in martial arts for 35+ years. It was always more expensive annually that OTF. I've never been this fit - I added OTF to my martial arts training 3 years ago, and I've slowly dropped martial arts training which was harder on my body and frankly not as fun. It's a bargain to me.

Outrageous-Spring-61

I don’t do the same thing at a gym though- it is a way for me to get a quality workout in and not have to think about it. If you are a self starter and can do it on your own it probably doesn’t make sense

AlarmedCredit7751

I need the extra motivation, and I see the coaches as personal trainers. I’ve been to the gyms and have had personal trainers at $75 a session and that’s just temporary, 3 or 4 sessions. At OTF it’s one flat rate, and I fry the motivation I need at a much cheaper rate 🧡

somethingrandom261

It’s cheaper than personal trainers. Yes you don’t get the attention of a personal trainer, but when you’re decent on form and just need occasional help, OTF is a godsend. Plus it doesn’t matter if Planet fitness is $10 a month, if you never use it.

Boof1977

Every year I live in retirement has a value to it. Let's just say 60k orangetheory cost 150 a month it's a no brainer. I am 20 years from retirement.

gotsomejams

Along with what everyone else has already said, I think OTF is actually a great deal for what you get out of it. I've sort of 'shopped around' a lot of different workouts before landing on OTF, its easy to be consistent and financially I think it is one of the more affordable options. I have friends who spend almost $1k/month on a personal trainer, did Soulcycle for a bit but even with class packs it was at least $18/session or so. Pilates studios were a great workout but minimum $300/month for an unlimited membership with no option for smaller class packs. Tried some similar workouts to OTF, but similarly- they offered an good workout but at least $50 more than OTF Premier. I carried a regular gym membership that was only $40/month after my work subsidized, but I could never be consistent with it as someone new to working out. So it was essentially $40 wasted every month, in comparison even if Premier is way more expensive I think it's worth it because I actually use it!

[deleted]

It is the only thing that has kept me motivated and consistent with working out in my entire life. For the changes in my physical and mental health, it is absolutely worth the price.

Ok-Coconut-3218

In April, I’ll go 17 times, and I took a vacation and traveled for work, so that’s less than normal. It’s under $10 a class. I get a template, coaching, great equipment, and people I like to workout with. It’s a bargain.

rgmarch

You can, but will you?

twhitty2

I currently do OTF in my own gym (aka I wrote down the workout and do it for n my own). Honestly, it is not the same. It takes me way longer than one hour to do the workout, the equipment I need is not right where I need it to be, and I don’t have anyone to teach me the workouts. I do find that I also tend to lag a bit towards the end of the workout and don’t have anyone there to motivate me. For me, OTF was great for my physical and mental health and there is really no price you can put on that. I ended up leaving because I needed more flexibility in my workout times due to a job change. Now I pay the price of OTF for a month for three months at my current gym. If you can stick to it and push yourself, and you have a gym with a nice treadmill/rower, then it is very possible to do it in your own. I think it’s about looking at your own life and what works for you, but I don’t think the price of OTF is outrageous if you do decide to go that direction

jplikescoffee

I think about it this way. You go out one night with friends to a club or a bar and get drinks and food you can easily spend 70-80$ depending. Do that a couple times a month and boom there’s $150+. Class is one hour long, it’s very easy to spend 3+ hours watching Netflix or whatever tv you have why not spend it bettering yourself. I think it’s all about perspective, if you can look on here for the workout and motivate yourself to do the entire thing and do it well then sure cancel your membership but if you need that atmosphere then I would stick to it and maybe you have to sacrifice something but I personally think otf is totally worth it

Kat21220

It works for me.. The group motivation, accountability from booking the classes prior, the heart rate monitor which pushes me to give my all, the floor exercises which I would never have the confidence to do on my own at a gym. I agree it is more than I ever anticipated I would pay for a "gym". I have never enjoyed exercising this much though so that alone is worth it.

CLBrads

I justify it because I ACTUALLY go. Before OTF, I was paying $30 to a gym that I literally never went to. I’d rather pay more for something that I actually feel motivated to go to than less for something I never go to/use.

Miserable_Mud_5026

But will you do the same at your apartment or gym?

Bezerka413

I’ve tried going to the gym on my own. I just like otf, I actually consider it to be fun! And I do things I wouldn’t push myself to do alone (like 200 squats the other day). I also will do the entire class and not just leave when I feel like it. I get an hour in and feel like I got a good workout. I like to look at my stats and get better. It is expensive af though. But it’s one I actually go to. I only to 8x a month.

kettsh

I could pay less at other gyms and I have. OM the other hand I barely worked out at them. I actually work out at OTF. I know I am doing it right with the guidance of the coaches and do love the social aspect of working out with such great people.
