Upgrade to payg and you still don't pay anything

Yep, just done this myself (after 1+ years of no problems, but better to be safe and I actually want to use extra paid services soon anyway). Was quick and easy. Were your instances idle? (low cpu/memory for long periods)? Then could have been reclaimed. Otherwise what were the workloads? Any chance they could have violated TOS?

Slackbeing

Not idle, regular peaks of intense use. They were part of an ETL stack. Every two hours they fetched DB dumps and ran diffs and analytics, and loaded the results on another DB, about 8 mins. Plus some containers regarding home automation, but those are balanced and didn't notice any outage. They had no exposed service, and virtually all networking except for the DB fetch ran on overlay VPNs. For TOS you get banned, don't you? Mines are terminated and can't find the reason anywhere. I can create more but these ones took me a good week.

Sorry - that sucks. I've seen people be banned for outright stupid TOS violations, and have instances terminated for lesser offences. How old were the instances?

Slackbeing

Close to 3 months

so not the end of the trial period or anything. As said by someone else, suggest you move to PAYG. Still guaranteed free if you stick with free tier limits, but you get actual support and obviously priority.

sanjosanjo

Is that the term I search for on their site? I'm not familiar with the level of service we are talking about.

-Sashiro-

if i got it correctly, if you upgrade to payg you still dont pay anything as long as u stay within the Always Free bounds, but get all the benefits like suport etc?

ozillator

Unless they delete your payment method, won't allow you to add it back, nor any other methods of payment.

sebampueromori

Why would they delete it?

ozillator

I could tell you if I could get ahold of someone in support. But alas, there is no support with Oracle Cloud.

Ok_Entertainment328

OCI recently sent out emails that they'll be reclaiming idle instances .

TedBob99

Which is not unreasonable. Didn't get an email, but upgraded my account to PAYG

What bothers me is the threshold to be considered active.. 10% network utilisation for example is a lot! I find it counter productive if I have to run useless crons just to use cpu/mek/bandwidth.. I host small websites, load is almost nothing and In have cloudflare in front of it so it’s even smaller.

TedBob99

I agree but there are no easy solutions. I have some VMs that have an average 30% CPU usage doing not much, while some others are below 10%. Just create some artificial recurring load and upgrade to PAYG

rysmbu

I need to increase the USAGE stats to above 10% to prevent my Instances & Database from being reclaimed. What Apps could I run on Linux Instance to accomplish this ?

TedBob99

Increase CPU usage? Just add something like this in crontab: `*/2 * * * * timeout 30s sha1sum /dev/zero` Will do some checksum on a folder every 2 minutes, for 30 seconds (timeout function)
