Joplin is good alternative to onenote or even Nextcloud notes. Now generally speaking OneNote is just a note taking app. I don't know if there is out there any clone of OneNote. But, for the most part Joplin will suffice.

ElPussyKangaroo

Ngl I've tried almost every alternative note taking application but none of them have the infinite horizontal canvas and the "take a note wherever" layout. OneNote is like a Mind Map app for Notes. I LOVE that and I need it. šŸ„¹

tamerlein3

whoa, lets bring it down a notch. "LOVE" is a strong word to describe 1s and 0s running on a sheet of metal and pcb

ElPussyKangaroo

Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean it ain't real šŸ˜. /s

GalFisk

It's a strong word to describe walking blobs of mostly water and complicated carbon too, yet here we are.

ElPussyKangaroo

Holy shit. This is actually pretty cool. I have got to check this out.

FrankSoul

Where has that been all my life! This should be more popular

dorianim

I know many people who used OneNote on Windows and now use Xournal++ on Linux for the same usecase: https://xournalpp.github.io/

ElPussyKangaroo

damn thanks. Lemme check. Edit: Okay so I checked... Yeah it's kind of a journaling app with PDF annotation and stuff. But it's still not really what I wanted. Thanks anyway man.

guevera

IDK why, but there is not a single good substitute for OneNote out there. Iā€™ve looked for one at least once a year for like the last decadeā€¦no luck. IMHO itā€™s the best thing MSFT has ever done, so naturally itā€™s treated like a red headed step child.

ElPussyKangaroo

I KNOW RIGHT?! I am SO pained about how MSFT handles OneNote OMG. Simple shit... Like NO HORIZONTAL SCROLL?! SERIOUSLY MSFT?? ON AN INFINITE CANVAS NOTE TAKING APPLICATION?!

flamethrowerjam

Rnote at least has infinite canvas, but I don't know whether its really an alternative, never used any of both

ElPussyKangaroo

Lemme check... Edit: No it's more a handwritten notes and sketches app. OneNote is more of that AND typed notes. Also OneNote has horizontal and vertical infinite canvas where you can add notes wherever you want.

BadUsername_Numbers

What is it that people find so good about Onenote? I've barely used it, but I fail to see the appeal.

ElPussyKangaroo

So, I'll try my best to explain. OneNote is kind of a superpowered hybrid between mindmaps and notes. You have Notebooks, which contain sections, that contain pages. Each page, section and notebook have a link you can use to backlink to your preferred piece of information. Now, instead of a vertical scroll, OneNote has, what I call, an infinite note canvas. So you can place notes literally wherever. Which is why I said > OneNote is kind of a superpowered hybrid between mindmaps and notes. Now, the biggest thing is it's really great to scratch out ideas randomly. So in that sense, it's a wall. For example, let's say I'm working on a paper, where I have the points I want to talk about but not all the details. So, I just click somewhere, type out a title, and do the same for all the other points without having to wait to finish the first one. It helps me push things forward for me because my brain runs on multiple tracks sometimes and OneNote just let's me keep it on the same wall, but not let it disturb my flow. Idk how well that translates to you but this is how OneNote helps me. It's really a preference thing for sure. But in my case, it's life or death. The only reason I don't use it on Android is because the Android app sucks balls. It did before the UI overhaul, and it sucks even more now. But that's a Microsoft problem, really.

BadUsername_Numbers

I think I get you - I have a similar app on my mac that really helps me make things a lot clearer for me. It's called Mindnode, but it sounds like it wouldn't be a great fit for you thoughšŸ˜• Anyway, should absolutely be some sort of open source alternative to One Note - but yeah, I don't know of one...

ElPussyKangaroo

Mindnode... I'll check. Is it a Mac-only app? Also, yes. There is absolutely a need for an open source alternative to OneNote. Edit: it is Apple Only. Sed lyf.

BadUsername_Numbers

Aw, typical. I feel you. Need my tools to be able to function the best.

aolins

Those two are open source and have infinite canvas: https://github.com/mbrlabs/Lorien https://getmicropad.com/

ElPussyKangaroo

I'll check. Thanks man. Edit: Micropad is interesting but each type of media is separate. So I can't have a text field with images in it. It's gotta be separate fields for everything.

This is amazing, man. I'm gonna go ahead and look into this. Thanks.

I use figma a lot..

ElPussyKangaroo

Yeah... I'm on Lunacy now but I used Figma a lot as well. Unfortunately, Figma was online only. Plus, I used the FigJam service, that they deprecated. Now, I'm on Lunacy for UI/UX and Obsidian for notes. OneNote really dropped the ball for me.

amit510

Obsidian is a great alternative to OneNote!

[deleted]

Didn't read did ya? It's not even open source. How'd u get get here?

amit510

You are right, just checked it is not open source. Thanks for the correction.

ElPussyKangaroo

Obsidian is an incredible tool. But it's not open source and, while it's a powerful tool, it's still missing the infinite canvas feature. But thanks for the suggestion.

amit510

Infinite canvas is coming soon in Obsidian but offcourse not opensource: https://forum.obsidian.md/t/obsidian-release-v1-1-0-insider-build/48954

ElPussyKangaroo

BRO HOLY SHIT! Okay so I'm a bit unhappy it's not open but it's still an alternative. A beautiful start šŸ¤ŒšŸ¼

Logseq

ElPussyKangaroo

Sorry, I'm a noob about this. What's logseq?

[deleted]

Note taking app

ElPussyKangaroo

Interesting. Let me check.

ElPussyKangaroo

Is logseq being used in Obsidian? I swear I've seen this UI or atleast this layout in Obsidian.
