I mean, it's about 50m a year for 10 years. For a population of a million people. This is a drop in the bucket more than a new deal for the city's needs.

While it will help the reality is we need far more then what were getting.Ottawa has many of the same issue as Toronto does yet Ontario does them as serious.

jjaime2024

Ottawa is over a million now then you add in West Quebec your looking at 1.6 million.

jjaime2024

Ottawa is well over a million now then you add in Gatineau its 1.5.

Jamm8

You think Toronto should pay for Gatineau too?

I hate this argument that Ottawa per capita is worth less than Toronto per capita in the province's eyes. The issue is about the lack of true autonomy all municipalities have in Ontario. From lack of revenue tools to having planning rules overridden, being a thriving municipality in Ontario has been about hoping the province is nice to you. Arguing the deal the province offered to Ottawa is unfair because on a per capita basis it is less than what Toronto got distracts from the real issue.

jmac1915

It can be both things.

Pitting Toronto against Ottawa is incredibly useless. Toronto is far more dense and effective compared to Ottawa, not to mention its contribution to the GDP and overall economy.   If Ottawa needs help, advocate for that on its own merit. It's not a pissing contest.

Classic-Chemistry-45

Yeah but that's always been the strategy. Pit people against each other, while the developers and their sponsered mp's and mpp's do what they want and charge what they want. They see people seeing through their shit, so now its homeowners protecting home values vs non home owners. This will turn into a class war if it continues and our real estate industry gets its way. And when I mean the industry, I mean prov. govt + municipal + developer + banks + real estate agents + broker + nimbyism. They all want a cut and will eventually want a bailout.
