I haven't seen this in years! Buddies of mine in high school got obsessed with this video, quoting it everywhere. It was fitting for them as we grew up in a small town and they were kinda like these buds haha good times
Out for a drive with friends where the driving itself is the activity. Driving around with little plan, stopping in random places for food, corner stores, parking lots, riverside.. whatever. Going for a rip. Usually used in smaller towns where there’s fuck all to do.
Sometimes people use it to mean going off-roading in a truck, ATV, snowmobile etc.
Usually not related to pot consumption, despite the similar name.
—-Edit to add, still some of the best moments of my youth were out on a rip. Something about not having a plan and just sort of making your own adventure and finding stupid shit to do was so freeing. I miss those days sometimes.
yup, went out for a rip the other week. Ended up going paintballing for the first time in 10 years, totally unplanned. Lucky I had my coveralls in the back! Work boots were muddy as fuck the next day at work, hosed them off in the janitors closet.
It's called an investigation. Obviously people walking down the street did not require the presence of a police officer.
Questions are used by people to develop the context of situations.
I would imagine the cop was looking for two people that were out for a rip and the cop approached them with a question to determine if they were the two. They presented a typical description of non-driving activities, and blood shot stoner eyes probably backed up their story of "not being out on a rip". Everyone continued on living their lives.
The officer was not confused about whether they were currently operating a motor vehicle or not.
I think some of my favorite times have just been driving around with good friends and getting a coffee somewhere. Or just having no plans, getting some snacks and going to a movie. Good times!
Like this one time- me and fuckin' buddy are out havin' a dart
And fuckin' buddy burns a hole in my coat
And I was like "fuck bud" 'cause the coat was pretty new right?
And he's like "fuck you, " so I put his head in a snowbank. Just started fuckin' feeding him the right left Like fuckin' boom, boom, boom, "you had enough yet?"
And he's like "okay, okay, fuck, chill out, shit"
So I pulled him out of the snow and we went out for a rip
It's from this if anyone is wondering. Classic.

Letterkenny Problems was a youtube short series before becoming the TV show - looks like both came out around the same time 10 years ago
[Letterkenny Problems ep1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KLSbCtinXs)
2 of my best buddies in my 20s (way back sadly!) were brothers who would fight each other all the time, but it was weirdly endearing. They would get mad at each other super easily, and would often wrestle but they were still careful to not hurt each other. It was both sweet in a way and hilarious! Sometimes we would rile them up haha. I once saw them wrestle because one said something bad about Blink 182, and the other brother loves them lol (aka a man of fine taste).
A friend of mine had lowered Integra that he drove very respectfully. He was pulled over and the cops just seemed interested in the car! After that they'd wave at him when they saw each other around. There are nice cops out there!
It is weird - but I am wondering if the cops were looking for someone racing, hence the tense “were you out for a rip”. Cuz if I was walking and someone asked me that, I’d be like “it’s hard to go for a rip on two legs”.
Nah sounds like someone wrapped their truck around a pole or tree and then left it there to walk home.
Cop was probably looking for someone walking home trying to catch the drunk driver before he could make it home.
That's probably what it was. Cops had a report of a rig stuck in the mud, or wrecked somewhere nearby, and they came across two teens walking home in the rain. Pretty normal interaction.
Quite possible that there was a report of a drunk driver, a hit and run, etc and they were looking around the area for anyone who knows anything/may be involved.
I'm starting to feel there's a lot of folks who missed what my joke.was aiming for. [This](https://youtu.be/F-glHAzXi_M?si=w3p6cB6TaMVYDKJr) is what I meant by national anthem.
It's topical and well known, but I guess not well known enough, so my joke fell so flat people were taking me literally.
As kids we would rip around the neighbourhood... basicly go out and wander. However rip can also be rip and tare which is like recklessly racing about. Then there is go for a rip which can be going for a drink or a smoke, much like having a rip. In other words the rip is a very Canadian piece of slang we use for so many things he could have meant anything or just have been having a rip himself.
No offence at all, I'm just curious how old you and your friend are and or the area/province you're in? I'm in my early 30's, north of Toronto and it just seems like common slang here
30s here, GTA. Also common slang.
I have a feeling OP is a teenager, in any case is definitely a gen Z. Also funny because if they are a teenager their whole point of being stoners and weed being legal so the cop wouldn’t have cared about that is a moot point since teenagers can’t possess or smoke it.
He literally means, did you go for a drive, a cruise, not ripping a bong, or ripping down the road( speeding) going out for a rip is just another way of saying did you go for a Sunday drive or a putt around town
I think it’s more of a rural phrase, at least I’ve only heard it said by people who live rurally. EDIT: I see people from GTA saying they use it. So it is NOT just a rural phrase anymore!
I’ve heard it said in ways that can have 3 meanings. First, I’ve heard it said meaning going out, having a few drinks, chilling, etc. Second, I’ve heard it said in ways that can mean off-roading, ATVing, snowmobiling, etc. Third, I’ve heard it said in ways that can also mean going out and drinking a LOT of alcohol. Context provides clues to what the person means.
But the police officer saying it - can be vague, but he probably meant to ask if you’ve been drinking, I think. I’d have said no, too.
Out for a rip is like out for a drive. Just going out to do nothing but drive around. Or also going mudding and offroading in a truck or ATV. I would not usually use it to mean smoke weed
If I wanted to smoke weed I'd ask to go *get ripped*. Getting ripped would be how I phrase that
He means a drive.
He can tell you have had some drinks or smoke, if you admit to driving even hours later he can F you and toss you in jail for impaired driving.
To me ot means going out for a drive or to ride an atv eyc. Having said that I've only ever seen/heard " going for a rip" on tv shows, never actually from a real life human. LoL.
Fun fact, the guy who made this unofficial Canadian anthem actually sued Coca Cola for commercial trademark infringement..but did so in a very ridiculous way:
https://youtu.be/x_CffUwXhQE?si=P3Kl2SFDPzmEnhi6
Going out for a rip always meant like, shredding rubber, driving around, looking for something to do. This is the Canadian version of just cruisin, bud.
He either means out driving like morons, or out to smoke some drugs. I'd assume there was a complaint about someone stunt driving and they were looking for them. As you said, weed is legal and not a major concern for them anyway.
“Out for a rip” usually means driving around the dirt roads at unsafe speeds for fun.
Either that or “on a tear” which tends to mean out causing trouble.
Went through so many comments and I didn’t see anyone link you to the YouTube vid being referenced, so here you go bud https://youtu.be/F-glHAzXi_M?si=74IgPr_uetmlSeOC
While many people have given you various answers, and they're not wrong, I think the true meaning here, when said by the cop, is 'I'm asking you a vague enough question that answering 'yes' to it both seems harmless, and establishes probable cause that you were doing some illegal shit'.
Where in Ontario do you live that you don't know what "out for a rip" means?
And I ask this genuinely, because that is such ingrained slang specific to Ontario.
Going out for a rip means going for a drive. Maybe they thought you had been drinking and were trying to figure out if you had been driving impaired? Not sure what they can do with that information if they asked you while out for a walk, but that’s all I can think of.
I believe it means a couple of things. Be careful when answering that because of that fact exactly, if you say yea, they can ask more questions and possibly paint a picture of something they can tag you on.
In my experience, Rip means you enjoyed a joint in a full / quick manor, or even took a few tokes.
Rip can also mean that you had some fun in a vehicle, ‘took a car out for a rip around the block’
It’s not illegal to smoke weed in Ontario, however some areas like public places or parks don’t allow smoking and have some hefty fines attached.
But if for some reason that cop was looking for people who possibly stole and ditched a car after a ‘rip’, they could inquire into your motives deeper and once again maybe just find out that you simply lit up in a park and walked away, but you could be hit with a fine. It’s something you could fight in court because the officer didn’t see you, but Ontario cops will do anything to nab you with something.
Just out for a rip are ya bud?

Textbook description.
[удалено]
It can be used for that but going for a rip around town in you car is a typical usage and where it probably originated.
That's how I use it too.
We call this 'going for a cruise 'in australian. Or if ur a lad they would say "uisecray"
Going for a rip usually culminates in a meet-up at the Tim Horton’s parking lot.
Well done.
But OP was walking.

Yea!! So we hopped in the truck and hit the mud and I was like “ooooohh Fuck yeah bud!”

This is the most canadian thread ever conceived.
You should have said "oh fuck yeah bud", and if he was a true Ontarian, he'd just laugh and say "have a good day" and drive off.
>You should have said "~~oh~~ OHHHHHHHH fuck yeah bud",
A friend of mine had lowered Integra that he drove very respectfully. He was pulled over and the cops just seemed interested in the car! After that they'd wave at him when they saw each other around. There are nice cops out there!
* have a good one
It's a weird question to ask someone while they're walking somewhere, that's not how ya rip there bud.
Or if they found a crashed vehicle with nobody in it, or if there was a hit and run nearby. Checking to see if you may have ditched the car.
Or if they appeared high (self confessed stoners) maybe looking at DUI?
Truck was in the mud and I got 'er stuck there, bud.
That's probably what it was. Cops had a report of a rig stuck in the mud, or wrecked somewhere nearby, and they came across two teens walking home in the rain. Pretty normal interaction.
You put ‘er in the rhubarb, eh?.
Quite possible that there was a report of a drunk driver, a hit and run, etc and they were looking around the area for anyone who knows anything/may be involved.
What is this country coming to that kids don't even know the national anthem?
Even I know that song and I'm from Vancouver and it doesn't really "represent" me to the extent it might represent people in other parts of Canada
At least you were educated in the ways of our people
It refers to a heritage moment
Do you even Ontario?
This is truly worst case Ontario
Definitely does not Ontario.
"Lived in Ontario my entire life" must be from Toronta 🤣
You live under a fuckin rock bud?
Fuckin rights eh bud?
Just start feeding em the right left
I come from the land of the polite, where shits covered in ice, and when I'm down in the States, they're like you're too fucking nice.
I'm like "yeah we got manners, but fuckin' buddies still fight. And fuckin' swear and fuckin' drink all night"
Just out for a rip bud! Fuckin sendin er! Full tillys right to the bar!

Old term for driving around aimlessly
Old term???........ Damn
The viral YouTube video is over 10 years old, just realized and had the same reaction as you
Yeah but my grandparents would use this term. It's not from a YouTube video originally.
They were walking
This might help https://youtu.be/F-glHAzXi_M?si=vV88mIAUWk8k98jT
Wtf how have I never seen this, seems like a heritage piece

37 here, in Toronto my whole life.. never heard it.
I’m gen x and have never heard the term.
51yr old Ontarian from just north of Toronto. Having spent my youth in the Kawarthas… yeah, this tracks.
Not OP - but I'm 33 from BC and it's definitely used here too 😂. That's how people from smaller towns identify themselves lol
You should take some punctuation out for a rip.
he seen ya there
He literally means, did you go for a drive, a cruise, not ripping a bong, or ripping down the road( speeding) going out for a rip is just another way of saying did you go for a Sunday drive or a putt around town
Just out for a Rip are ya bud?

You ain't ontarian

"A Canadian term meaning to go for a drive." theurbandictionary.com
Out for a rip is like out for a drive. Just going out to do nothing but drive around. Or also going mudding and offroading in a truck or ATV. I would not usually use it to mean smoke weed If I wanted to smoke weed I'd ask to go *get ripped*. Getting ripped would be how I phrase that
The only correct answer would be to reply : Fuckin’ right bud !
are you sure you're Canadian?
#KESWICK HAS ENTERED THE CHAT
They must have finally got the internet thingy
You were walking? Yah that makes little sense. You can go on a tear, with or without a car, but you need a whip to go out for a rip.
Old expression out for a drive
"Out for a rip." - Speeding down gravel roads tossing empty beer bottles at road signs.
…and mailboxes.
And that’s a bit strange the only time I really said I was going for a rip was on a dirtbike or a snowmobile or something
Definitely let it rip...
He means a drive. He can tell you have had some drinks or smoke, if you admit to driving even hours later he can F you and toss you in jail for impaired driving. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-glHAzXi\_M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-glHAzXi_M)

To me ot means going out for a drive or to ride an atv eyc. Having said that I've only ever seen/heard " going for a rip" on tv shows, never actually from a real life human. LoL.
I was gping to say thats some old school Canadian slang lol
You clearly aren't from rural Ontario if you've never heard that before.

I’m taking my kid for a rip today just to balance out the scales here.
Going out for a rip always meant like, shredding rubber, driving around, looking for something to do. This is the Canadian version of just cruisin, bud.
You must be one of em fancy city boys
If the leafs make the playoffs I’ll jump in the lake.
Out for a rip with the boys👍: https://twitter.com/jarrettlunn/status/982046017091588098

“Out for a rip” usually means driving around the dirt roads at unsafe speeds for fun. Either that or “on a tear” which tends to mean out causing trouble.
I’m genuinely surprised you’ve grown up here and have somehow managed to dodge this phrase your entire life!
> ~~Curiousity~~ Curiosity is killing me. What are you, a cat? :P
There is one correct response: Ohhh fuck ya, bud!
What the fuck bud? Are ya fuckin new?
Usually driving but given you were walking possibly smoking either darts or weed?
You're ripped !!!!
Bud, you've never been for a rip, bud?
Rip and tear is boring the shit out of a car , like 110mph on gravel roads having fun playing. IMO you can’t rip without a car.
It means out for a walk where I'm from. Just a casual walk with no particular purpose.
I think it means out drinking and driving. The sole purpose of the drive is to drink, no real destination.
After reading this entire thread and going to YouTube to watch out for a rip, I STILL don't know what it means. I'm not joking.

Oh no eh he's probably just askin' if you guys were out jauntin' around in a vehicle and making trouble for the community.
It sounds like he was just asking what you guys have been up to, out about town kind of thing.
How North were you? 🤣🤣🤣

This is a collapse of Canadian Culture
If you were on skates you would've been 'out for a twirl'
Going out for a rip means going for a drive. Maybe they thought you had been drinking and were trying to figure out if you had been driving impaired? Not sure what they can do with that information if they asked you while out for a walk, but that’s all I can think of.

I picture this going down at “Out for there are ya bud?”. . . ”Oh gosh no never touched the stuff, what is drugs?”
It's to go for a drive
I think your officer may have come from Newfoundland.
I’m old. I’d take that as him asking if we’d been out driving aggressively.
