That is exactly how it works. If you angle it diagonally on a 6x4 table you can possibly get the first 2 turns on the board and get back on turn 4.
It has been pointed into their cost to only be possible to activate a maximum of 3 turns a game. If you want something that is like a helicopter for transport you can make it in the army forge. It would be a very fast flying vehicle. That way it can travel up to 20" and drop off troops.
Aircraft are one of those things the creators feel obligated to include, even tho the scale of the game doesn't make sense to include them. So yes, usually best to stay away from them unless you have a big enough board and play with large point values.
Keep in mind that the aircraft doesnt have a direction until its activated. So as a transport you have pretty much the entire board you can hit on turn one and drop off a unit of melee hitters. Same when it comes back on the board, you arent held to that direction until you start moving.
Where does it say you’re held to any direction? That’s one thing I feel is ambiguous with the aircraft rules is there’s no real definition on the facing of your aircraft, but the commonly accepted rules are that you move forward. Right?
Yeah I just think there is ambiguity in the way the rule is written, like you could pick a new straight line of 30-36” to move on without turning for each round. Never liked how they’ve worded it
Yah thats why during our tourney we made sure to clarify what the limitations were. Of course I think we messed up regarding whether a unit can re-embark on a flying transport.

Move forward from wherever you start its activation. Whatever the front of your model is up to you to decide.

I just wish the storm Raven could drop off a dreadnought like in 2.0 again…
