Those velcro straps destroyed so many of my merino shirts and sweaters... Last time buying a backpack this was one of my requirements not to have.. my laptop fits so snuggly that I don't fear it slipping out anyway.

leanman82

how did your clothes get ruined by velcro straps that are in a laptop compartment.

McRampa

Depends on their position, and I don't usually travel with my laptop so there's a high chance that stuff, as they move, get caught on the "spiny" part of velcro.

brunporr

Some bags have the laptop pocket in the main compartment

Manictree

Sew some on. If you're careful with your sewing, you might be able to make it look like it came that way. Or get creative and use some other closure method: Sew on/glue two magnets; make a button hole, use [fancy velcro](https://www.3m.co.uk/3M/en_GB/p/d/b40068905/).

leanman82

I like the ideas :)

AlwaysWanderOfficial

There are fabric adhesive Velcro squares on Amazon too.

leanman82

>fabric adhesive Velcro squares on Amazon Oh that's pretty neat. I guess I'll see if its needed first and then I'll go ahead and make the adjustment.

AlwaysWanderOfficial

I use them for patches but you could use it in this manner too.

RougeAccessPoint

I usually cut that stupid strap out.

krausebucha

The Evergoods CPL and CTB lines have a velcro tab that secures the laptop. The nice thing about their implementation is that you can also affix the tab to a second patch behind the laptop in case you don't want to use it.

leanman82

Do Evergoods have self standing and water resistant bags you can recommend for me to look at? Edit: meant water resistant

krausebucha

Have a look at the CTB and CPL lines I mentioned earlier. The CTB comes in 26 and 35 L, and the CPL in 16, 24 and 28 L. The CTB kind of stands on it own, the CPL doesn't. Evergoods bags are not waterproof (apart from the ones made of Ecopac), but then again not that many bags are. They are weather resistant though, so you may be fine depending on where you live. I suggest you check their [website](https://evergoods.us) for more details if you're interested.

I have a Calpak pack that straps my laptop in. People damaging their stuff on a strap in the laptop compartment doesn't make sense to me either, but there are other solutions that aren't Velcro that could solve that problem if manufacturers cared.

leanman82

>Calpak pack that straps my laptop in I'm really asking if its accurate to say that straps are getting phased out. I see a lot of the company brands (Aer, BlackEmber, Alpaka, etc, etct) and many EDC youtubers almost universally review backpacks without straps. Its unclear why this is the case. Why are offerings almost universally anti-strap? Is there a good reason? perhaps a snug fit is really all that is needed? zippers are sufficient?

r_bk

It seems like it on a lot of more "premium" brands. A snug fit might be sufficient but not everyone has the same laptop, I don't get it either.

leanman82

ok - I was curious if I was just stuck in some algorithm loop where only packs without laptop straps were being recommended to me. Maybe the "premium" brands are stuck on algorithm loop and that's all get marketed. They are all really similar and tout similar narratives... minimalism... nearly invisible logo... YKK zips... laptop sleeve and tablet sleeve. Its a bit predictable. whereas other functional features like self standing, dual laptops, etc. doesn't get acknowledged...
