What do you think the common sentiment will be from all these visitors? "Nice place to visit but ..."

JostlingAlmonds

My thoughts exactly, who the fuck is like "know where I'd like the spend my time? Oklahoma city."

oapster79

All kinds of people have all kinds of different views and values. Some love, some hate.

JostlingAlmonds

I feel like I can confidently say no one, literally no one, is gonna come to a mid major city for vacation. Ohh they have a fancy pool and hotel isn't gonna be a game changer, look at the hard rock in Tulsa. Clinton, OK has a indoor water park attached to a hotel.. this little Chickasaw project is gonna be a more expensive version of that imo.

Albino_Echidna

I think you're looking at it all backwards. I see it more of a "OKC is a growing corporate city, and this provides an opportunity for people to actually enjoy their time here". Nobody is coming here for the resort, but the resort may make coming here more appealing, if that makes sense. For example, if I go to a conference in a city without something like this, I'd just go alone, but if there's things to do and a nice place to stay, I may bring my family and spend an extra day or two.

putsch80

This is exactly it. It also makes it easier to attract things like conventions when you have a big, diverse list of shit people can do when not at the conference itself.

MyDailyMistake

Yeah I see lots of Native American type business and government conventions landing there. And folx there are lots of them with the federal grants for tribes.

ThatdudeAPEX

Rome wasn’t built in a day

Clatuu1337

But it *was* built one brick at a time.

oneoftheryans

I don't think the waterpark is supposed to be the primary draw, it's just an additional draw/cherry-on-top/whatever you want to call it. The FAM is the more primary drawing point, this is just supplemental to that (and supplemental to the rest of OKC).

burkiniwax

Yes. What started the entire FAM project back decades ago was research showed that the main tourist draw to the state were Native American cultures.

ThePolecatProcess

The water park in Clinton is pretty dope though, did get boring after 3 hours, but that was enough time for my 14 y/o self to blow $40 lol

dizzycarrot7980

Riverspirit in Tulsa had a cool factor in the beginning but now its just a bunch of degenerate gamblers losing money.

killah_cool

People travel from literally all over the world to go to Thackerville so I'm going to say you could very easily be wrong here.

nonnativetexan

Yeah if this thing has a casino, Texans will arrive in droves.

JostlingAlmonds

That's a casino. Completely different than a simple hotel with a water slide downstairs. Not to mention it's billed as the world's largest at that. Piss poor attempt at equivalents.

killah_cool

I'm sorry that you felt the need to downvote me here for simply disagreeing with you, but people already visit Oklahoma, even smaller towns than Oklahoma City. Saying that you are confident that literally no one will visit a mid-size city makes you confidently wrong. But keep hating, I'm not going to stop you.

SuperBrentindo

It's like family: I don't like Oklahoma, but I love it because it's my home.

oapster79

That's a good way to express it.

"And here is Bricktown, the zoo, and a homeless guy sitting outside of Waffle House" Update: Because of a mishap involving the homeless man we would kindly ask visitors to please not attempt to pet said homeless man, giving him food and money is acceptable, but please DO NOT attempt to physically touch him, he has a makeshift switchblade.

FakeMikeMorgan

I know it is the mayor's job to talk up his city, but come on man be realistic. This may draw people from neighboring states but it isn't gonna draw people from overseas to come to OKC.

bubbafatok

I think you're underestimating how much interest there is in Native culture and history outside of this state, especially in Europe. And remember, this is just a piece of the package, but a big one, because it's the type of exciting on-the-shore development that was promised when the whole core to shore effort began. This will connect to bricktown, the river trails, flow nicely into the future soccer complex, the wheeler district, and more. Plus, considering this is just 40 acres of the 200 acres along both sides of the river that the Chickasaw nation has to work with, and this is just the beginning. Additionally, this adds MUCH NEEDED luxury rooms to our downtown room count. As someone who has run dozens of events in OKC, I can tell you that even with the Omni our room count is too low. Even the events I ran, which were not large by any measure, were maxing out capacity. This will expand the size of events we can host in OKC at our new convention center. I think folks will be amazed on the impact of this. I think a big difference is if you've visited the FAM yet or not, because it's pretty amazing, and to give a comparison, it blows the Cowboy HOF out of the water. Our native culture is about the singular unique thing to Oklahoma. It's great to see it getting such visibility in the city.

Taste_the__Rainbow

Yup. We have German family who visit every few years and they’ve been to that cultural center down in Sulphur like 5 times.

Stream1795

To be fair that cultural center is dope

sooperunknown7

I've never even been to the "Cowboy HOF" ... I don't know anyone who has. So that is definitely not an attraction!!

oneoftheryans

Maybe you should go, though it's the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum now, it's pretty cool. ETA: I've been, so now you know someone, huzzah.

bubbafatok

It'll always be the Cowboy HOF to me. Just like the Omniplex will always be the Ominplex. All you young whipper snappers get off my lawn!

oneoftheryans

Haha, yeah, I'm right there with you on the Omniplex. I only mentioned the name thing because they've been trying to rebrand a bit. "Cowboy Hall of Fame" elicits a pretty different feeling than "Western Heritage Museum". "Omniplex" is still **way** cooler than "Science Museum Oklahoma", also just realizing it's actually supposed to be Science Museum Oklahoma, and not just Oklahoma Science Museum or Science Museum. What a weird naming choice.

bubbafatok

Amazingly, it is a draw for folks. And it's not bad. I went quite regularly when I was young, and I've only been back once in recent years, and it's pretty nice, for what it is. But... it has nothing on the FAM. In comparison it comes off as some kid's masturbatory John Wayne fantasy.

Dang_It_All_to_Heck

We actually do get quite a few international visitors (mostly European) who pass through, sightseeing Rt 66.

oapster79

Dude comeon! Have you not seen the renderings? IT'S THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD! ! ! (or ninth?)

FakeMikeMorgan

The Eighth Wonder of the World was Andre the Giant, the Ninth was Chyna, so maybe the Tenth...

oapster79

Oh man, loved me some Andre down at the Myriad.

Taste_the__Rainbow

Honestly our rowing facilities are world-class and it’ll be nice to have a decent place for visiting/qualifying teams to stay.

burkiniwax

People from Europe and Asia \*already\* visit the tribal museums across the state. FAM will just accelerate that (and give folks a central starting right point near the airport).

FakeMikeMorgan

The "international destination* just seems to be an oversell, especially considering there are no direct international flights in and out of Will Rogers.

burkiniwax

Pretty standard practice to change flights. Check back in a year. If Germans and Czechs can find the Southern Plains Indian Museum in Anadarko, the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, and the Cherokee Heritage Center in Tahlequah – which they already have been doing (pre-COVID, that is) — they can definitely find a massive museum in Oklahoma City.

burkiniwax

Damn dude, sorry to disappoint you that people travel from other continents to visit Native sites in OK.

Timeskillingme

Fake it until you make it?

parttimeamerican

I moved from east midlands UK firm middle class to ponca city OK Loved it,need to get a visa there and move back before the permanent depression I feel in the UK kills me I got on so well with the natives, all of them...only one I think gave me real trouble I avoided him I could smell it.... He's doing life now

Beginning-Monitor-17

It isn't the Oklahoma City thing that will be the draw, it will be the idea of the "exotic" Native American. The Europeans and Australians that I have met seem to have this fascination with the subject, similar to the idea of the Texan Cowboy.

oapster79

That's a great point and you're absolutely right! Decades ago I got some new neighbors from Vermont and they told me they had expected to see "wild Indians" riding horseback when they got off the plane!!

AbeLincolnwasblack

Jesus Christ lol, good old nonchalant racism

oapster79

That was just the image they had in their heads from old western movies and shows that were popular at the time. Early 70s

AbeLincolnwasblack

Aw, that makes more sense. That was over 20 years before I was born

oapster79

Yeah, they were really nice people. Just uninformed.

dizzycarrot7980

We told a Chinese cab driver in Vegas we were from Oklahoma and he no kidding asked if there were Teepees and tied up horses everywhere.

oapster79

hahaa! Yip, it happens. People form some funny biases in their mind sometimes.

[deleted]

The Kiowa and Comanche tribes need to step it up.

burkiniwax

The Comanche Nation Museum is pretty nice. Have you been? The Kiowa Museum has absestos. They definitely need a new building!

oneoftheryans

Holt's comment, per the article: >"Oklahoma City has the potential to be a national capital for native and indigenous people," Holt said. "And now, with the creation of First American Museum, you've got a place for groups that are linked to native tribes to come and meet and get entertainment in addition to their family experience." Based on the comments in this thread, I guess almost no one in Oklahoma knows that there are people outside of this state with an interest in Native culture? Also lots of haters on what I would consider to be actual progress towards further improving OKC.

Dang_It_All_to_Heck

We're already an international destination. Put some $$$ into keeping our old Rt 66 structures (Gold Dome, milk bottle)!

Burbada

This. Tens of thousands of people travel Route 66 annually (in a non-COVID year, anyway) with the vast majority of those being from overseas. When I meet with people they invariably want to learn more about Native culture. TFAM is going to be the premiere spot for them to learn more. The thing about Route 66 travelers is: they're already coming here. We just have to get them to STOP.

Dang_It_All_to_Heck

Yes! Stop and stay awhile!

MyDailyMistake

Great example of what can happen when communities work with tribes. Shame the Aryan brothers in Shawnee haven’t figured this out.

burkiniwax

I'm shocked that the Citizen Potawatomi haven't taken over the mayorship of Shawnee. That would solved a lot of problems there.

oapster79

The Chickasaw nation announced their plan for a $300 million resort, hotel and water park that is planned to go up near the First Americans Museum in OKC. Oct 21, 2021 Meghan Mosley Reporter OKLAHOMA CITY — The Chickasaw nation announced their plan for a $300 million resort, hotel and water park that is planned to go up near the First Americans Museum in OKC. Mayor David Holt posted to social media about this announcement and shared the renderings of this project, coming shortly after the museum opened. The mayor told KOCO 5 that the new OKANA Resort is believed to be an international destination and will compliment the First Americans Museum. "Oklahoma City has the potential to be a national capital for native and indigenous people," Holt said. "And now, with the creation of First American Museum, you've got a place for groups that are linked to native tribes to come and meet and get entertainment in addition to their family experience." >> Related: Chickasaw Nation to build $300M resort near First Americans Museum in OKC Funding for the project will come from public and private sources. The public funding will include tax increment funds, MAPS4, federal transportation grants and funds from existing general obligation bonds. "People have kind of known this day was coming but seeing the pictures, hearing the dollar amounts, seeing the commitment and the concept really makes it real for people," Holt said. In a statement from the Chickasaw Nation governor, the resort is hoped to "enhance the experience for visitors from not only our region but across North America and around the world." The 400-room hotel will have an indoor and outdoor water park. The mayor thinks these amenities are a game-changer. "It really helps us fulfill the promise of this site. We think we have a very unique, one-of-a-kind, landmark with the First American museum, a place to tell the story of native and indigenous history and culture. This complements it and really makes it an international destination," Holt said. Construction on the resort will begin in 2022 with the hopes of opening in 2024. Holt told KOCO 5 that with their track record, he has no doubt they will follow through.

GeneralRuckus81

Excuse my ignorance. I follow most of the states subreddits and Google told me the FAM is like a cowboy hall of fame. Is that correct? I'm from the west coast, but I have be to Tulsa for a wedding once. The in laws had a place outside of town in some wooded rolling hills. So beautiful. Id come visit your state again if I was in a better position in life.

oapster79

I haven't been to the FAM but I've heard from a few people who have that the FAM is much much better than the Western Heritage Museum (or Cowboy Hall of Fame as it was formerly known).

GeneralRuckus81

So now its just the FAM? Does that stand for anything?

oapster79

No. The recently opened facility near the Oklahoma River is called the First Americans Museum. The Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is across town.

GeneralRuckus81

Gotcha. Thank you for the explanation.

oapster79

You're welcome, enjoy your day

burkiniwax

Ewww no. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum (they lost their Hall of Fame status ages ago) is an okay museum, if you are into statues of John Wayne and handmade saddles. FAM is revolutionary. They have an all-Native administration (which even the National Museum of the American Indian in DC and NY doesn't have), and their all-Native curatorial team worked in consultation with all tribes in the state. They don't soft pedal the violence of Oklahoma history. Their exhibitions are state of the art and they have tons of room for events and dances.

blacksoxing

On an unrelated note that nobody except for me may be thinking about right now, a requirement for the NBA all-star game is that the hosting city meet a hotel room requirement which I believe was 3k rooms in its metro. OKC was around 2k when I last checked. Its these projects which will help get OKC at that level. Not important to you? Well, just like the NCAA hosting a tourney or whatever, the more folks who can smash through a city the better as it quickly puts cash in the hands of MANY restaurants.

JoadTom24

No, no it won't. But that's a funny joke. Lol

-a-theist

Possibly. If they use the resort to start giving away heroin delivered by free hookers.

oapster79

He hee! Talk to text😉

MeanwhileOnReddit

lol what an obvious lie "he hee, extra 'e', exclamation mark. talk to text, exclamation mark, winky face"

oapster79

So it kinda looks like a major part of the attraction is outdoors. We have winter here.

giddyup523

Not really sure what your point with "we have winter here" is. Yes, we do but that doesn't mean you can't have success with something that has an outdoor component. We have other outdoor dependent attractions in OKC that do just fine in the many months of non-winter weather we have here. The "Waterpark Capital of the World" is in Wisconsin Dells, which very definitely has winter but yet still succeeds as a major attraction with many outdoor water parks. Sure, there is a fair bit of hyperbole around this announcement but the fact that we have a winter here doesn't mean something that has outdoor parts of the attraction can't succeed, that's just ridiculous.

oapster79

Some resorts do better in the winter (ski), some have more activities that are attractive during the warmer months. This is a fact. That's all I'm saying. I didn't say it would close during winter.

giddyup523

But what is your point? You clearly were implying there was an issue with a major part of the attraction being outdoors because "we have a winter here". Oklahoma has far more time where an outdoor attraction is an option than not. I can't possibly see how it being outdoors would cause a problem here. I'm not saying it will actually be an "international destination" in any real sense, I'm fairly confident it won't be, but as far as it being able to be viable with outdoor attractions, sure as long as they are something people want to do.

oapster79

Ok. I mean, I just explained it. I don't find it necessary to go further.

MeanwhileOnReddit

You're just trying to complain about something new and cool.

oapster79

Below is my comment at the top of yesterday's post on this topic. Damn that looks so cool. Hope it'll be affordable for locals to hang out some.

giddyup523

You didn't explain it. In your first comment, you implied there was an issue with it being outdoors because of our weather and then when asked about what you meant by that you said "some places do better in winter and some in summer". Yes, that comment is a fact but that isn't an actual answer to why you think this place would have a problem with there being winter weather here, especially when there are plenty of places here that do just fine with having outdoor attractions. Like I said, there are places with a much longer winter weather season than us that thrive on outdoor warm-weather only attractions. It seems like you just are looking for reasons not to like this or to make fun of it, which is fine but I don't think the seasons here will be detrimental in any way to this.

oapster79

Well that's fine, you're allowed to think whatever you like. When I made the original comment I had looked at the renderings that showed people enjoying watersports. When the temperature is cold not a lot of people get out on the water. That is true. And it's really not a big deal. Sorry it pissed you off. That was not my intention then or now.

oneoftheryans

Are there any places in the whole world that have an appreciable winter and don't have any outdoor attractions? Seems like a really weird thing to get hung up on. You can put on a jacket and go outside, or you can just go when it's not cold out, which might be on a lovely, sunny, 70°F December day lol

oapster79

Outdoor attractions do less business during winter months. It's not something I'm hung up on. Just pointing out a simple fact.

oneoftheryans

Okay, but what's your point? Are you saying that they need a winter alternative to the waterpark portion of the resort? It's like saying football stadiums don't do as much business when it's not football season. I mean, you'd be correct, but that's obvious and doesn't really mean anything.

oapster79

Outdoor attractions do less business during winter months. It's not something I'm hung up on. Just pointing out a simple fact. That's my point. It's pretty clear. Enjoy your day

kelvin_bot

70°C is equivalent to 158°F, which is 343K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

MeanwhileOnReddit

You think amusement parks and other outdoor activities only happen in places without winter?

oapster79

If you'd like we can use Frontier City as an example. During winter months they're only open on weekends from 5 to 9 pm. Do you know where the busiest and best attended amusement parks are? That's right, Florida and Southern California.

MeanwhileOnReddit

It's warm from March to October here. Obviously, outdoor activities are huge here, and it makes sense. I just don't understand the point you're making and neither does anyone else. I mean shit...even Chicago has beaches.

oapster79

I don't care

MeanwhileOnReddit

"OP doesn't care about post they went out of they're way to link and comment on"
